The societies that practice female genital mutilation believe that this practice is necessary for a girl to be considered a complete woman, and the practice marks the divergence of the sexes in terms of their future roles in life and marriage. These people believe that the clitoris and the labia are the male parts of the female body, and the removal of these body parts make the female body more feminine and attractive to the opposite sex. Females are considered girls and cannot be viewed as women until the mutilation occurs. Finally, another reason that this happens in certain cultures is the control over the females sex drive. Women are not supposed to enjoy sex. It is only necessary for procreation. Therefore, if they eliminate the desire for sex, they are eliminating the chance of extra-marital sex. However, research has proven that most men in these cultures prefer to have sexual relationships with women who have not been mutilated.


Approximately 10 million women in the world have had some type of genital mutilation performed on them. Sadly, every year, approximately two million girls stand the chance of being put through this torture. The most common place that this occurs is in Africa, however, places in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, the Pacific, North America and Latin America also practice these horrible rituals on innocent girls and young women. There are women in the United Kingdom that have had genital mutilations performed on them, but they are part of minority ethnic populations. In 185, the United Kingdom instituted the Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act, making it illegal for anyone to perform or assist in any type of female genital mutilation. Most of the mutilations that occur in the United Kingdom are done by physicians, usually of the same ethnic background as those seeking the mutilation. This practice is illegal and the physicians can be fined or imprisoned for performing these operations. If these people cannot find physicians who are willing to perform these operations, they usually send the females to other countries to have the mutilation performed on them. It has been researched that there are no medical, hygiene or health reasons to support female genital mutilation in any of its forms.

However, research shows that approximately 0% of women who had infibulation performed on them could reach orgasm. Whereas, women who underwent clitoridectomies most likely do not reach orgasm because of the removal of the clitoris.


In conclusion, female genital mutilation is a horrific crime against women. Being that it is such a societal custom, and mostly determined by men in these societies, it will probably never go away and women will have to endure this torture for the rest of time.

hmm well today was actually a pretty good day. nothing went wrong, yet. hmm yea. im running out of stuff to say in this journal and its starting to upset me. if you havnt noticed, all ive really been posting is quizzes and stuff like that. sorry to the fans. recently nothing bads happened to me so i have nothing to write about. hah yea. well everythings going well with dylan in case you cared. you should. oh yeah ryan and nicole broke up. i guess they just needed some time off. but ryan has some idea that she doesnt like him although she still does, so i duno its kinda twisted i dont even understand it and she tried explaining but i guess all that matters is she knows what shes talking about. i just hope shes ok with what she did, yea.


well i have nothing to write. i really want the almost famous soundtrack and i went to the mall with sam on sunday to get it. and i looked for a while then i finally asked some guy who worked there and he said i guess we dont have it. how could they not have it? that movie has like the best music, its a movie ABOUT music and they dont have the cd? i guess im going to have to go to best buy or cd world or something but i must get it somewhere.

In lines 14 and 15, "Yet knowing how way leads on to way/I doubted if I should ever go back," gives the reader the feeling that the speaker knows what his choice will ultimately be and his decision may not exactly be the best. In lines 16 and 17, "I shall be telling this with a sigh/Somewhere ages and ages hence," shows that the speaker will look back on his decision and have doubts. The word "sigh" indicates that the speaker is regretful.


In the second half of the poem, Frost uses a tone of acceptance. In lines six and seven, "Then took the other, just as fair/And having perhaps the better claim," is talking about why the speaker will choose the "road not taken." The speaker is trying to justify his decision. At this point in the poem the speaker has accepted his choice. "Hence along with difference represents when he is thinking about being years into the future and that he will be happy regardless and would not change anything. even more beautiful. I enjoy nature paintings, especially with water, such as ponds, and


streams. I believe that in this particular painting time period would not matter as much,


nature relatively stays the same.


Monets palette tended warm and cool colors . The painting Water Lilies had


more pastel light colors, such as greens, pinks, grays, blues, and violet. Monet has a very


distinctive brush stroke his style of painting is not formed of lines but more of light


strokes, and blurred images. The emphasis was on the importance of light as the


describer of the objects and light as the real subject of the picture. The painting gives


a certain calmness, and relaxation to them. The painting were done outside on the


site at all times of the day, so all the effects of light could be studied and translated


into paint on the canvas.


At the end of the water lily pond Monet built a wooden bridge in the Japanese


style. Between 18 and 100 he used this bridge as the subject of his first series of


water lily painting, Placing it symmetrically across the middle of the canvas. Putting the


bridge behind him Monet had started to focus his painting on the surface of the water,


painting little but the flowers and leaves in the water.

As I hung up the phone with my friend Emily I could barely contain my excitement. Reluctantly my mother had agreed that she could come over for a few hours. bench in our hallway as my mother walked toward the door. Before she had even gotten there, being a bit more perceptive than my 11 year-old preoccupied mind was at the time, she could tell something was wrong. He said that while he was out working in his garden just now he could hear some sirens just over the hill where my aunt Nancy lived, and that we might want to go over and see if there was a problem. My aunt Nancy was my father's sister. She had lived just over the hill behind our house on the next street all of my life. She had three daughters who were already grown and married, her husband had been gone since I was years old, he died of cancer. She was 5 years old and had had asthma along with terrible breathing problems since she was a small girl. My mother ran out the door and into our yard. I quickly peeled the damp neon green spandex of my bathing suit from the hallway bench, and I followed her very closely. We began to walk around the back of our house and all of a sudden we could hear them. We could hear the sirens of an ambulance just over the hill. Then it was like we were in a race to get there, but in slow motion. We were both running as hard as we could. As we got closer to the hill, we could hear someone screaming. It was a woman's voice, but it wasn't Aunt Nancy. We could barely hear it. It seemed like we had been running for days by the time we finally reached the point that we could just barely see over the hill. There it was. The ambulance was in front of Aunt Nancy's house. My mother, not sure of what was happening, told me to stay right where I was and not to go into the yard. Despite the fact that I wanted so desperately to know if Aunt Nancy was hurt, I was relieved. As I slowly approached my father he could tell that something was wrong. He didn't say a word. Then from out of nowhere, I began sobbing uncontrollably. We all experience things as a child that gradually contribute to the loss of our innocence, but I didn't feel like it happened this way for me. By loosing my aunt I lost a part of myself, but I guess this loss of innocence and a simplistic point of view toward the world was inevitable. I went to the emergency room and it was so packed I waited for hours before seeing a doctor who gave me tylenol and sent me home with the name of a ENT doctor. My wife brought me to the ENT the next day and he put me in the hospital with a diagnosis of an abscess. The head of infectious deseases and the ENT worked on me with steriods and antibiotics and it worked somewhat as the lump went down the pain was better. The ENT operated on my neck and tried to drain the area, but he said he didnt really see anything. After a week they sent me home for Easter and it got worse again over the weekend. I went in to the ENT again on Monday and he scheduled another surgery for the following day. I was given assurances through out this ordeal that it wasnt cancer, but my gut was telling me this didnt make sense. The surgery was performed on that Tuesday and when I woke up in recovery my wife was there and told me they had found lymphoma. Believe it or not I was almost relieved to know the truth and was ready to fight it. I was more worried about how my wife and kids would deal with it. My wife, it turned out, was much stronger than I ever realized and was my biggest support. The outpouring of prayers and messages was also very heartwarming, but my odyssey had just begun. I started treatment with an oncologist that my ENT recommended in April. He told me that it was stage one and a fast growing cancer that they had a good success rate for cure (5%). I went throught sessions of chemotherapy, which made me somewhat sick and rundown and 5 treatments of radiation to my neck. I continued working throughout most of this time and thought everything was going great when I started having some lower back pain. This got to the point that I was having trouble staying at work all day and even sleeping was difficult. My radiation oncologist ordered a CAT scan for my back and they told me I had a slipped disk. I was given pain medication for this and I continued with my treatment. My wife however noticed that I was not myself, I was irritable and argumentative. When I missed my last treatment and didnt even know I had one is when she insisted I go to the doctor again. My parents were here throughout this episode as well because it was around my daughters th birthday. I actually dont have any memory of this time because of what I was battling, but people close to me knew there was something wrong as my weight had ballooned up to my heaviest and then I lost 0 pounds in a week. It turned out after many scans and tests that my cancer had moved into my brain and I had a tumor that was 5cm by 4cm. After so many stumbles my wife and family made the decision to move me to the local cancer center where we had meet a doctor previously on a nd opinion. She was/is a great person who I believe saved my life. The cancer center was full so it took several days to get me in and moving toward a treatment plan. This time my doctors confirmed my diagnosis with Sloane-Kettering and the Mayo clinic and a plan was put in motion. I had surgery on my head to put in a resevoir to deliver medicine to my tumor (the tumor was not operable). The only alternative was radiation, but was not preferred. I was told later that I was only the 10th case in the nation where this had happened (based on my age and stage of cancer). This was a really strange period in my life as I dont have any real memories. My whole existence was out-of-body, like I was watching someone else going through tests and procedures, but it wasnt me. It was like a dream that I couldnt wake up from. The day I remember finally coming out of the haze was when my doctor came to me and said, I have great news for you...your brain tumor has shrunk 50 percent after just one treatment! I looked at her and then my wife and family and said, I have a brain tumor? You might think that it would have been shocking to me, but it wasnt for some reason. I think that since I have no memory of the negative diagnosis that it has helped me because by the time I knew what was going on I was already getting better. I had a total of 5 chemotherapy treatments, including my brain and all over body and after the rd treatment my tumor had shrunk by 0 percent. I was told by my doctor that I will always have some residue of the tumor showing up on MRIs, but that this is common and they believe the tumor is gone. I finished this round of treatments in the October timeframe and was told I need to have a bone-marrow transplant for my best odds at preventing a re-occurance. I was lucky in that my bone-marrow was clean of cancer so I was able to use my own stem cells for transplant. It took days to collect enough stem cells for the transplant and I went in the beginning of December 0. I was determined to fight through all the side effects the doctors predicted for me (weight loss, sickness, mouth sores), but they were correct about everything and I spent Christmas in the hospital after receiving full body radiation and heavy chemotherapy. I actually lost another 0 pounds to make a total loss of 70-75 pounds throughout the process. Everyone now tells me how great I look and I always tell them that while the regimen I went through is effective for weight loss I wouldnt recommend it. I finally came home after a month in the hospital and was now on long term disability from work (not having worked for 6 months). I was told I had anywhere from 6 months to a year before I could go back. I was extremely lucky that my company thought enough of me to hold my job until I could come back. They didnt have to do that and I will always appreciate it. After the transplant I had several months of sickness to deal with to re-build my strength (blood transfusions, growth factor shots for my immune system, etc...). I had an additional full body scan months after the transplant and I was still clean. I did have some anxiety attacks as every time I went to see my doctor I would have back pain and wonder if my problems were returning. My doctor prescribed Paxil to help with this and it has actually worked wonders. She also challenged me after months to start doing something with my time and it worked on me as I started increasing my work load around the house. I started feeling better everyday and my strength is gradually coming back. I have recently gone back to work after being off for a year and it has really been great for me to see all the people again. In fact they had a very nice reception for me that more people than I expected came to. My wife and parents both became emotional as I told them about the celebration. It means alot to them because they have seen everything I have gone through. I have now been clean for about 8 months and I believe that I have beaten the cancer. I have changed much from the experience and believe I am a better person for it. I now try to enjoy everyday as much as possible and cherish my time with my family. I now know that when they say, Life is too short!, it really is true.

In conclusion, the visit from Clifford Wells gave me hope for technical education because it proved that a system with concern for students' learning as an outcome still exists in Kentucky. Levin (00) argues that community colleges continue to be responsive, adaptable institutions that meet community needs. However, the community is now re-defined as part of a managerial economy, and largely economic, proliferated by global capital, by large corporations, and supported by governments at the federal, provincial, and state levels. Moreover, Levin asserts that business and industry profit by the community colleges responsiveness and that economic development is fostered through the training of a workforce and the re-training of workers. This suggests that community colleges want to take on the role that the technical colleges have fulfilled in the past. As the 00 football season began, we knew that we had one of the better teams in our conference. Our team just entered the Jack Pine Conference and was ready to go to war with any team. We knew that we had a shot at earning the Jack Pine championship, but also knew it would take endless amount of practice to get there. With everyday becoming a closer one to our first real game, our team set goals that we needed to accomplish. We wanted to win conference and we wanted to make the playoff; something that is very tough to do, as we knew every team was gunning to beat the new comers. Finally the day had come; the day where it wasn't our teammates lined up on the other side of the ball, it was new faces, new colors and new names. I knew as the Quarterback and as the captain, I had to lead my troops into victory.


Being Quarterback is a very stressful and difficult job, as everyone may not think. I had to have the greatest head, had to be smart and had to be able to take whatever was thrown at me. When the team loses, the team gets the loss, but the QB also gets it. I know that there is no "I" in team, but no one else is pulled out of the bunch and receives a loss, except the QB. I was willing to take the responsibility and make sure we were an unstoppable force. As game time neared, the butterflies entered and I knew that the time was almost there. It was my senior year and my last year to ever play football and wanted to start off with a big bang. As we received, we wanted to make a statement and score right away. The play came in and it was my favorite one. All I can remember is my coach yelling the play, "Oklahoma right, 5--1-," and I knew that it was a touchdown. My favorite receiver was a guy named Tyler Foor, also my roommate, and he had the 5 pattern, a post-where the receiver runs out 10 yards and then breaks towards to goal post. I seen him break open and I reared back and let her fly with all I had. The first play-a 60 yard touchdown pass. I knew that this was just the start of an unbelievable ending.


We went on to win that game, but then we hit some kind of brick wall. We did every single possible mistake, in the next two games, a team could do. We would go out and fumble, slack on defense and just not play to our potential. It was like our dreams we had as a team, was slowly coming to an end. To make playoffs, the team had to win at least six games and we had already lost two; one non-conference and one conference. The season looked like it couldn't get any better, but then luck turned onto our side. We fixed out mistakes and capitalized on our opponents. We dominated in every aspect on the game. We went on to win the next two and stood all alone in second place; one game out of first as the biggest game coming up was for first place. This game was not only our homecoming game, but the game that I will never forget.


Throughout the day, I carried a football everywhere I went, to every class, through the hallways, it didn't matter. The only problem with the day was that rain was in the forecast for the night. The team never practiced much with the ball wet, so we knew that we wanted it to be dry and warm. As school progressed until the end, I worried about nothing the whole day except football and the big game. No one wants to go to the homecoming dance with a loss. The school day ended with a pep assembly and then a parade through downtown Gladwin. My team rode on a big farm wagon, while I rode in a nice 00 convertible Mustang, as I received honors to be the Homecoming King. This all seemed like I have been there before in a dream at night. It was as if I was the king of the jungle that all creatures looked up to. I was about to play the biggest game of my life, I was named king, and most of all, I was liked by everyone.

Everything started to slowly dry, as we had hours until game time. Why all of a sudden this happened? No one knows, but in my books, it was only the start to heavenly intervention.

I would always be the one to jump up on the pile, say a few words and then in tradition of the Gladwin High School football team, say, "Break down," and then all my teammates would follow with a response of "Hit," and that cadence would occur three different times. The team would line up like a tunnel, being as wide as the goal post, going out towards midfield. The announcers would then call off the names that were starting, and then the guys would hit them as they ran out.


I would always be the last one called out, seeing how it was my team and I was in command. After I started to run out, the rest of the team that wasn't on the starting squad would follow behind me and we would all gather at the 50 yard line. We would all huddle in a circle and then start jumping around. Finally, after about a minute, we would stop and I would say, "Who do we hate?" and the team would reply, "The Mustangs!" Like the other saying, we would do this three times and then run to the side lines and get ready for kickoff.


Walking out to the field, the captains, one being a spokesperson, and the refs from each side would meet at midfield. Usually it was me, but sometimes we switched it up. Since it was our combat zone and our place, we got to call it. We won the toss and chose to play defense, to see what they really had. Coming into the game, we knew we had to stop their running back, who led the conference in rushing yards. As the game got under way, I was patiently waiting for the finally sound to see the ending score and what the outcome was going to be.
