A Raisin in the Sun

In the fifties, many young couples sought to fulfill the American Dream. While many families were able to save money easily and successfully fulfill their dreams, others were not so fortunate. The play "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry chronicles the story of an African American family as they seek their dreams and the trials they face in doing so. Lena, Walter, Ruth, and Beneatha Younger all live under the same roof, but their dreams are all different. Different family beliefs and goals among the group do not always benefit and are sometimes a source of dissension amongst the members because the larger group goals are sometime lost because of the incessant race for individual goals.

As the play begins, Walter and his wife Ruth are seen having a fight over Walter's dream to become a 'mover and shaker' in the business world by using an insurance check as a down payment on a business venture. Walter tells his wife that, "I'm trying to talk to you 'bout myself and all you can say is eat them eggs and go to work" (Hansberry ). This is the first sign of Walter's recurring feelings that if someone in the family would just listen to him and put forth their trust his dreams would come to fruition. Following this argument Walter goes off to his job as a chauffeur for his employer, Mr. Arnold, which is the job he so longs to be done away with because he would rather "be Mr. Arnold than be his chauffeur. ( ) This episode illustrates a major conflict throughout the story. As Walter dreams expand, he seems to leave the smaller things such as family behind. This movement away from family is against the furtherance of the values and morals of the family. While his father would have been happy simply working and caring for his family, Walter is more concerned with becoming a 'mover and shaker' without thinking about the resulting consequences for his family.

Later in the morning, Beneatha, the younger sister of Walter, initiates a conflict by speaking in an unacceptable manner about God. She is seemingly rejecting values that have been taught to her since childhood. This event shows yet another time in which a family member threatens to ruin the inherent stability of the family structure by trying to build in a manner which is completely incompatible with the rest of the structure. Beneatha, although believing to be bettering herself is leaving an important part of herself and her heritage behind. Beneatha's speech about God is her attempt to show her independence in the world, but when she asserts herself in an area that is extremely sensitive to the family heritage, she threatens to wean herself from the only guaranteed support group in life. However, Beneatha realizes later in the story that it is the furtherance of long-standing family values and morals, which give the foundation upon which to build a wonderful life.

In contrast, the story's ending presents a view of how standing by long term family goals, values and beliefs provides a sense of unity that can surmount any obstacle and keep the pride of the family alive. Once the insurance money is received my Mama, Lena Younger, she believes that the best thing to do with it is buy a new house for her family and help to pay for the cost of Beneatha's schooling. At first she is very adamant against giving any of the insurance money to Walter because she believes that his uses for the money will not benefit the family. But, as time progresses Lena shows how downtrodden her son is because none of the family members will back his dream, so she gives him the money left over after buying the house to spend on his dream. However, Walter's deal falls through and he is faced with a pride deflating task of talking with the head of the white

Pride in the Crucible

Pride, what is it about pride? Wars have been fought over it, whole cities have been burned to the ground, vast empire have been wiped off the face of the earth; all because a few people had too much pride to step aside. Pride, though usually strong, in some cases does come in extremes. This is where one can be caught between a rock and a hard place by their own excessive pride. A good example of excessive pride is in the play "The Crucible". This play is about a group of girls that, instead of being caught dancing, blame others for their actions. This causes the town of Salem to go crazy looking for the work of witches. A lot of good people are accused of being witches and those who have too much pride to confess, because of this lie, are killed because of it. Pride is evident in three of the main characters; Reverend Hale, Elizabeth Proctor, and most distinct in the character of John Proctor.

The first character that I will discuss is the good reverend Hale. He originally arrived at Salem with no doubt about the existence of witches or any unfairness of the court. An example of his pride that he holds for the court system is evident on page 861 where he says "our greatest judges sit in Salem now". This struggle between what he thinks is right and what the court thinks is right entangle him in a web of feelings, feelings of betray of the nobility of the system and the honest goodness of these people. As the play progress Hale is found on the other side arguing against the court on page 881 when he yells at the judges "It is a lie! They are innocent!" As a result of his pride the same people that he helps convict are now the people he is trying to save.

The next specimen of pride is the wife and mother Elizabeth Proctor. On page 874 her husband John has just confessed to adultery and she is brought in to find out for herself if this is the truth, which it is. Elizabeth, not knowing that John had already confessed and having pride in her good husband says "My husband is a goodly man, sir," implying he is above adultery. Just after those words left her mouth, John yells at her to tell the truth for he has. At this she replies "Oh, God" realizing she has just made him a liar. At the end of the play, as John is about to die, she apologies her pride but John will not allow her to admit it. He says that his sins are his own, not hers.

Order custom research paper on Pride in the Crucible

The character that shows the most pride is John Proctor. This is a man that would not let the judges nail his confession to the church door because it would ruin his good name. On page 886 when asked why he would not let them nail it to the door he said "Because it is my name! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!" With pride in is heart he tears the confession. As he does Judge Danforth says "Hang them high over the town! Who weeps for them weeps for corruption!" And so, John dies, and he dies with his good name. Now, whether this is the right thing to do or not, I can not judge because I have never been in a situation where my life depended on my pride.

In comparison the other characters show very little pride when compared with John Proctor. While the others just live with their guilt, he dies for his pride. At the being I state that pride is always strong, but in some cases people take it to extremes and this is one of those cases of excessive pride. That he would give his life to keep his name seems extreme. The title of this play is The Crucible which is a severe test or trial. I think this play test the limits of how much pride people hold in even the smallest things

An Abortion for My Fourteen-Year-Old?

Jacquelyn Garrod

Argument

Abortion should be illegal for any women to obtain, even a fourteen year old. Abortion is murder; it is the killing of an unborn baby. In today's society, regular people are not allowed to go out and just murder someone for no reason, so why should doctors be allowed to murder unborn babies? The term abortion actually refers to any premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether naturally spontaneous, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced, as in a surgical or chemical abortion. In 17, the Supreme Court handed down its Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions legalizing abortion in all 50 states during all nine months of pregnancy, for any reason, medical, social, or otherwise. (www.nrlc.org). The vast majority of all abortions performed today are done for social, not medical reasons.

Though there is evidence of doctors and midwives performing abortions in the United States as far back as the 1850s, it wasn't until 17 that As efforts to liberalize abortion laws began to emerge all over the country, individuals concerned about the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in all fifty states. By May 17, thirty state groups had elected representatives to serve on a board of directors, and the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) was formally incorporated on May 14, 17. The first NRLC

Garrod

convention was held in June of 17 and NRLC opened its national office in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 17 with six full time employees.

A baby whether born to my fourteen year old daughter or an adult is a creation from God. Life begins as soon as conception takes place. The Holy Bible states, "Lo, children are a heritage of the Lord and the fruit of the womb is his reward" (Psalm 17). Abortion is cruel and inhumane. Abortion is an easy way out of a problem that has been created from being foolish but only for a moment. An abortion can be seen as putting the unborn child out of misery while he doesn't have the ability to reason or fear.

"According to teenpregnancy.org, teenagers who have abortions fear that having a baby would dramatically change their lives in a way they are not prepared to accept." Today's teenager is a busy one. In many cases, the teenager feels she will have little time to themselves if they have the baby. If only they had taken time to think before having unprotected sex or waited until they were married to have sex.

An unwanted pregnancy for my fourteen-year-old daughter would result in many hardships for both our daughter and us. These are hardships that we would all have to learn to bare and accept. I could only hope that in the years to come when my daughter matured she would appreciate that we did not allow her to have an abortion and to bring a beautiful baby that we would all love into the world.

Abortion is a very cruel and nasty method of easing a person's burden. The effects to the person having the abortion is serious, but what about the people that love them? God created these babies, how does anyone have the right to make the decision to terminate a life for Him. Just because a newborn baby cannot speak does not make it right or fair. Just because you cannot see the baby does not mean it is not alive. The

Garrod

freedom to choose has been taken from the child before it even knows it should have the freedom to do so. We all know that God forgives us all our sins, but can we forgive ourselves if we let this happen?

Tom Reilly published an article entitled, "Youth Crime has Changed and so Must the Juvenile Justice System," which appeared in the Boston Globe. In stark contrast to Reilly's article for change, Abbe Smith and Lael E. H. Chester published an article entitled "Cruel Punishment for Juveniles." Reilly uses explosive language to persuade his audience that the Juvenile Justice System is outdated. Smith and Chester, on the other hand, plead for rehabilitation for juveniles. Reilly, Smith and Chester use different types of style and evidence to support or defend their position.

In Reilly's article, support for his argument comes from various opinionated ideas and few statistical details. However, Reilly makes for his lack of convincing examples with his use of descriptive language and strong diction. A district attorney in Massachusetts, Reilly believes that the juvenile justice system is outdated, and is unable to handle the increasing crime rate. "Until fairly recently, the juvenile justice system served our country and our children reasonably well. Beginning in the 170s, however, the reality of juvenile crime began to change. Juvenile crime grew more violent and more common, and the system was unprepared." Reilly makes good use of his word choice by appealing to the need for public protection. He believes the current system is outdated, designed only to address infractions such as truancy and petty theft. In addition, Reilly argues that, "These were serious problems a century ago, but they bear no resemblance to the "routine" infractions of the present day everything from rap[e] to crimes involving guns to cold-blooded murder." Again, Reilly uses the argument that public protection must be the number one priority. In order to reform the justice system, Reilly advocates the elimination of "trial de novo." "Under de novo, a juvenile has a right to tried before a judge. If found guilty (or delinquent), the juvenile can simply demand a new trial before a jury…" Here, Reilly uses a unknown fact to persuade readers to his side.

On the contrary, Smith and Chester oppose the cruel punishment advocated by Tom Reilly. Smith is deputy direct of the Criminal Justice Institute at Harvard Law School, and Chester is a fellow at that institute, so they know what they're talking about. Smith and Chester argue that it is cruel and unusual punishment to send young offenders to adult prisons. Smith and Chester use an anecdote, along with several statistics to provide a very convincing argument. "Frankie has spent the night in jail, an adult jail. In Massachusetts, 17 is the age of adulthood for purposes of criminal prosecution. He had been arrested for breaking into the basement of the house from which his best friend's family had just been evicted. His friend wanted to retrieve his punching bag." Smith and Chester use this anecdote to appeal to the readers' reasoning and logic. It is obvious that something such as petty theft should not be punishable by a day in prison. "Given the number of prisoners with HIV (the Journal of American Medical Association reports the rate of AIDS among incarcerated adults is six times that of the general population), sending children into adult prisons might as well be a death sentence." This additional evidence provides the reader with factual support to base their opinion on. They no longer have to make decisions blindly according to what some egotistical politician has to say.

This politician, would be Tom Reilly. His argument is backed up with opinions, opinions, opinions, but people want the facts! Reilly fails to persuade the audience due to his lack of support. Smith and Chester's article is more convincing because it has everything that Reilly's article is missing. Smith and Chester appeals to the audience's emotions, and their conscien

Elizabeth Bishop's poem "The Fish" is a work in which a fisherman takes a detailed observation of a fish. With a closer look at the poem, it becomes apparent that the fisherman develops a connection with the fish on three different levels. The fisherman connects with the fish physically, in age, and mentally.

The fisherman and the fish are connected by the physical similarities between the two. The fisherman talks about the fish's "coarse white flesh," like the flesh of the fisherman (7). The author talks about the small and large bones in the fish, which is similar to a human's small and large bones in his or her body. The author then goes on to compare her eyes with the eyes of the fish. The author says, "I looked into his eyes / which were far larger than mine / but shallower, and yellowed," showing the similarities and differences between the two (4-6). The author then begins to talk about the similarities between the two mouths. The author uses the word lip giving the fish human-like characteristics, putting the fish on the same level as the author. The fish and the fisherman are connected on more levels than just the physical.

Throughout the poem, the author notes the fish's experience. Bishop starts by noticing the fish's outside appearance. She writes, "… Here and there / his brown skin hung in strips / like ancient wallpaper," showing how the fish's skin has changed with its age (-11). Bishop then says that "He was speckled with barnacles," which indicates that the fish has been in the water a very long time (16). The author goes on to talk about the appearance of the fish's eyes by saying,

"the irises backed and packed

of old scratched isinglass." (7-40)

This quotation further emphasizes the fish's age. Bishop moves her focus to the fish's mouth, where she notices "… five old pieces of fish-line," (51). She describes the hooks as, "a five-haired beard of wisdom" (6). This goes on to show the fish's age and experience. The reason that the fisherman focuses so much on the age of the fish is because it causes the fisherman to meditate on her own life and experience, which allows her to connect with the fish on that level.

Lastly, the fisherman tries to connect with the fish on a mental level. The fisherman begins her quest to connect with the fish on a mental level when she looks into its eyes. Eyes are seen as a passageway into one's mind. The fish does not seem to have the same interest in the fisherman. This is shown when the author writes, "They [the fish's eyes] shifted a little, but not / to return my stare." (41-4). The fisherman is unable to connect with the fish until oil from her boat creates a rainbow in the water. A rainbow is a symbol of good after the bad. The fisherman lets the fish go, which gives the fish another chance at life. The fisherman does this because she hopes that one day her act of goodwill will come back to her in her favor when she is in a tough spot. This rainbow in the water allows the fisherman to finally connect with the fish on a mental level.

By the end of the poem, the fisherman connects with her catch on three different levels. First, she connects with the fish physically. Then, she connects with the fish in age and experience. Lastly, with the notice of the rainbow, the fisherman connects with the fish in thought. This allows the fisherman to further understand her catch and come to the decision to let it go.

PICHWAI PAINTINGS OF NATHDWARA

Location

Nathdwara, a sleepy ,dusty ,small town set on a hill some 50kms(0 miles) from Udaipur,is the scene of most lush and vibrant visual art forms in India , Pichwai paintings.

History

In the 17th century ,when Aurangzeb prohibited the worship of images, Hindu devotees in Mathura , home of Lord Krishna ,became fearful that their sacred statues might be smashed & decided to take them to safer locations.

The images of Sri Nathji were loaded on a chariot and sent on its way to Mewar. At Sikar, a wheel of the chariot sank deep into the sand and it couldn't be removed despite reapeated efforts. This was interpreted as a sign that the image wanted to dwell at that place and the priests decided that it should stay.

A temple was built for the idol and the village came to be known as Nathdwara , "home of Sri Nathji" or Lord Krishna.

Pichwai paintings

Pichwai literally means that which hangs behind. They are the backdrops setting the mood and religious significance of each ritualized scene. They are basically 4 iconographic renderings of the Krishna legend traditionally portrayed in the Nathdwara Pichwais. Each image is linked with a particular festival or holy day.

For eg

Gokulashtami, will have Krishna playing the flute to the assembled gopas, gopis & cows.

Dana Ekadashi, the taking of the toll or dana from the gopis & the breaking of the pots.

The paintings not only form a devotional backdrop for the temple, but also serve the purpose of outlining the religious stories to a largely illiterate population. They delight the eyes with the richness of colour and delicacy of execution.

Style of Pichwais

Pichwais , were traditionally done in a variety of media brocaded, blockprinted, embroidered, or worked in gold. In Nathdwara, however, a rich tradition of painted Pichwais grew. They are done on handspun cloth, sized with starch & painted in pigments derived from natural vegetables and mineral colours. They are also mixed with starch ,giving the Pichwais its charactersic strong smell. They have a stylized, rather static format with frozen figures set in idyllic landscape of brilliant green trees , midnight blue skies which sun, moon, stars, forked lightning, all shine together amidst fluffy white clouds; peacocks, parrots & monkeys in flowering fields and swans & storks, fish and turtles swim in Lotus-strewn silver waters.

This is the Indian conception of paradise known as Braj, unlike the bleak, beige Rajasthani landscape. These depict Krishna, the blue boy-God; Radha & gopis play; dance & make love; a pictorial allegory of the soul's yearning for union with the divine.

Present Scenario

The Pichwai tradition is carried on and its not only devotees of Srinathji who buy the cloth scrolls painted by today's descendants of Raja RajSingh's original court painters. The Pichwai has also become a tourist souvenir. They tend to now be painted with chemical fabric paints that have taken the palce of Indigo, Cochineal, Lapiz & Orpiment. Like many other forms of craft, Pichwai paintings are also slowly changing their form, influenced by the fast pace of today's life. They are gradually travelling out from temples to adrn the walls of homes of those who consider themselves to be the patron of art and craft.

Smaller sizes are constantly being made to satisfy the demand. They are done on lengths of silk, ornaments etc and are painted in rich dark hues.

Rates

Available on silk and synthetic silk, prices range from 00/- to 0,000/-. These paintings have very strong religious traditions. And the artist who works on them considers himself to be the servant of the Lord and puts in SHRADDHA or devotion on each Pichwai that he paints, though its now done for commercial use too.

Both Canada and the USA have governments that seem to work quite well, amidst their differences. While the USA is a republic, Canada is a constitutional monarchy, and both are based on the ideas of democracy. However, they are different in many ways, and each government has it's share of better methods than the other. For example, the USA has a definite term of office set for the president, 4 years, so that the president will know when he is done, and elections do not come as a surprise to the citizens. In Canada, the Prime Minister may sit for up to 5 years, calling an election any time he/she wants, from his/her first day in office, until the day before their last day in office. This can come as a surprise to the public, leaving them unprepared for an election. This is one of the ways that makes the USA system seem better than the Canadian. However, with the exact date known well in advance, campaigns in the USA start over a year ahead of the election, which can be quite annoying to many people. Canadian campaigns last for only 50 days.

The Canadian system does have it's strong points, as well. In the USA, presidents may only be in office for a maximum of 10 years with the rare possibility that their predecessor is no longer able to run the country, during a term. In most cases, the maximum is 8 years per president, in terms. This is not a very good system, if a president that is liked by all and makes decisions well is kept in office for 8 years, he is no longer allowed to be the president, no matter how much he's liked. In Canada, there is no limit on how much a leader may be Prime Minister. If the Prime Minister proves himself to be a very good leader, he will be kept in office for as long as needed. If the Prime minister proves to be a bad leader, they will not be re-elected. The parties keep or replace leaders as they see fit, and the voters have the final word.

The Americans have the better model for choosing government representatives, however. In an American election, the voters will vote on both the president and vice president, to ensure that they are who the people want. In Canada, we only indirectly vote for our prime minister, who then chooses his own staff all by himself, most likely all will be members of his own party.

Canadians also have a better separation system between the highest levels of government, as well. When the voters in America elect a head of government, they are also electing the head of state. This one person is the president, who occupies both titles. In Canada, the head of state is the Queen and the Governor General, who are above the differences between the parties. They are there just to be the monarch, not to get involved with all the different ideologies of the political parties. In the USA, the president will be either republican or democratic, which does not bode well for the patriotic symbol of head of state.

Order custom research paper on Canada Vs. USA

If there's blame to be had, the American's don't know who did what, there are different parties in the different branches, and each branch blames the other. In Canada, it will always be the government party, so that the voters know for certain who did it.

I can't say for certain which government system I believe is better. Each country has different strengths and weaknesses, which balance each other out quite nicely. Canadian voters are more involved in government decisions, but lack the involvement in who is running the government, the Prime Minister appoints his staff. America lets their voters get more involved in choosing their leaders, but they cannot determine who to blame when something goes wrong. If I had to choose between them for sure, I believe I would choose Canada as the better government. Canada has a few poor qualities, such as the prime minister having immense power, but they can be made up for simply, such as choosing a prime minister that everyone can trust.

A lack of authoritative evidence of adverse health effects in humans, yet abundant suggestive evidence associating these chemicals with problems in animals, has provided for a volatile debate. The mounting of scientific evidence on hormone mimics spurred the government to pass legislation requiring that all pesticides be screened for estrogenic hormones according to Goldfarb. Detection of estrogenic hormones are also being implemented in drinking water. The World Resources Institute reports that at least 45 chemical compounds have been proposed to be endocrine disruptors. Many are long-lived organic compounds that can persist in the environment for decades and bioaccumulate in body tissue. The list, as stated by the WRI, includes certain herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides (e.g., atrazine and chlordane); industrial chemicals and byproducts such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxin; and a number of compounds found in plastics, such as phthalates and styrenes, that are used to package foods and beverages.

Hormone mimics are "…such persistent chemicals concentrate in the tissue and accumulate exponentially as they move from animal to animal up the food chain. Through this process of magnification, the concentration of a persistent chemical that resists breakdown and accumulates in body fat can be 5 million times greater in the top predator such as a herring gull than in the surrounding water," according to Colborn et. al. Hormone mimics, even in small doses, may prove a threat to humans with the process of magnification. The mimics also pose a threat to persons who are potentially overweight. Recent studies are trying to link the hormone mimics that are stored in body fat to a cause for cancer. Derailed development has been exhibited with the gulls exhibiting strange behavior such as same sex nests and still other species exhibit visual birth defects.

Endocrine disruptors possibly disrupt the proper development of the human fetus. Quite possibly, say researchers at the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They reported last November that hypospadias, a birth defect in males in which the urinary opening is mislocated--on the underside of the penis or even on the scrotum--doubled between 168 and 1, and now afflicts nearly 1 of 100 newborn boys nationwide. That makes it the most common specific type of birth defect among males, says lead researcher Len Paulozzi.

The defect is thought to result from an inadequate surge of the male hormone testosterone between and 1 weeks after conception. As you block the fetuss own testosterone, the fetus cannot masculinize itself, Paulozzi explains, and you wind up getting these various states of feminization of the fetus, of which hypospadias is a mild form. Suspected causes include a fungicide and DDE, a breakdown product of DDT. Also possible, Paulozzi says, is that doctors have simply become better trained at recognizing and reporting less severe forms of the defect. Hormone levels that are typically found in the environment are hurting the vital hormone communication. Hormone messengers are critical aspects of development from sexual differentiation of an organism to brain organization. The relatively low levels of hormones found in an individual organism can be harmless, but if any offspring to that individual is affected by the hormone mimics.

Changes I saw in Bombay within the last 15 years

I visited my parent's hometown Bombay after a gap of at least 1 years. Wherever I went there were surprises stored for me. I would look around rubbing my eyes in amazement, I was debating to myself if it was the same place I visited 1 years ago. I had come from America and it did seem like it was going be just like it.

I remember my dad showing me his old school where he had studied. I was still there, but they made a bigger building out of it with a lush green park to its front and back. There were more hospitals and post-offices for people's convenience. Poor localities now had electricity. Roads were brighter than ever with more street lighting. More parks were constructed for civilians. More public schools were started, the government had primary education was made compulsory for all children despite of their social status. However there is still a lot of people from the below average income who have illegally employed their children. This is no good because the kids are underpaid and treated badly. In order, to provide all children with primary education the government should provide the lower class with some sort of a financial support. This will force all parents to send their children to school and improve the literacy rate. It was nice to see the population under strict control. People have started to have smaller families now. Bombay has now started to have malls just like America. People seem to be crazy about famous American brand names like Tommy Hillfiger, guess, Kenneth Cole etc. men and women are now treated equally. Almost ten years ago a son's education was more important than a daughter. Girls were not sent to school. A good example of the situation follows. An old neighbor of my dads had a financial problem and had to pick between his 8 year old daughter and 14 year old son going to school. Of course, he picked his sons education. Other than the financial problem he said his daughter would get married and have to take care of the house. It was no point "wasting" money on her. Now she is married and a mother of two kids. She has joined a local adult school to complete her education. Now, men and women, husband and wife, daughter and son are walking shoulder to shoulder in every field of live. The living standards are higher then ever. There is a lot of upscale restaurants, night clubs, hotels, fast food places like McDonalds, burger king etc. some young entrepreneurs are also trying to introduce true American concepts like starbucks and jamba juice.

It was nice to see the city progress. But I was somehow seeing the Indian culture diminishing in the youth. India thought its children to respect their parents, take care of them when they are old, and women dressed in proper attire. However, I saw all sorts of children out of which most don't respect their parents, young girls in improper attire. They seem to dress more like hooch's around town. I also revisited the famous juhu beach. I was very disappointed to see no changes were being made to its betterment. It was overcrowded as before. Once again, I saw a little boy who got lost and was crying. It reminds me of Sabrina. There was no sort of security which would patrol around watching for lost children or parents to ask anybody if their kids were missing. The crime rate had increased. There are still a lot of people who are living in filthy conditions. This is a human disease in Bombay. People are just not contented with what they already have. I think the key cause of our happiness in America is that we are satisfied with what we have. Our stable government plays a very important role in this. There was fewer tress. They were replaced with buildings or shopping malls. Bombay has changed which is good, but life seems to be like someone has press fast forward.Help with essay on changes i saw in a town

Vietnam and the limits of Power

The main objective behind the United States involvement in Vietnam was to contain the spread of communism in Southeast Asia. It was in the 150s when the United States began to send troops to Vietnam, during the following 5-year period, the ensuing war would create some of the strongest tensions in US history. Almost million US men and women were sent thousands of miles to fight for what was a questionable cause.

The Vietnam War created great controversy in the United States. The burning of draft cards, protests, and riots were all effects of Vietnam. In 167 General William C. Westmoreland addressed the public attempting to gain support for the war along with ensuring Americans that it would soon be over. He described the war by breaking it up into phases. Optimistically he explained phases one and two were over and the final phase was just around the corner. The General felt vast progress had already been made. He viewed the enemy as a weakening opponent that would soon be able to be overcome. Though Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara had his own view on the war in Vietnam. A year after the General addressed the public Robert McNamara drafted a secret memorandum for President Lyndon B. Johnson about the current status of the war. McNamara gradually became skeptical about whether the war could be won by deploying more troops to South Vietnam and intensifying the bombing of North Vietnam. Overall he saw no short-term possibility of winning or even ending this war. Robert McNamara description of the war and where it was going was so different from General Westmoreland because McNamara memorandum was meant just for the president so he was able to be brutally honest. The General, due to the desire of policymakers, had to convince the American public of close and victorious win.

The moral of American troops in Vietnam and the Enemy was an influential and ongoing problem all throughout the Vietnam War. Colonel Robert D. Heinl described the morale of United States Armed forces being the lowest it has ever been. He was among the soldiers in the field and encountered and witnessed the fragging, combat refusals, and dug abuse that occurred.

Buy vietnam term paper

He felt the situation was potentially disastrous and credited it in part to lack of public confidence in the war. He experienced first hand how discouraging it was to fight for such a controversial cause. Along with American morale, enemy morale was also a problem. The problem was that to many it was unable to be broken. Robert S. McNamara thought the enemy has adopted a strategy of waiting out American troops, which made there morale unbreakable.

Arthur E. Woodley served as a Special Forces ranger in Vietnam in 168 and 16. In the time that Woodley served he faced an ample amount of killing and brutality. He recalls how many fingers and toes he collected and how many Vietn'ese he pushed out of a helicopter. This is what is memorable to Arthur Woodley. Yet, he fought in Vietnam around the same time that, according to General William C. Westmoreland, Phase four should have been taking place. It seems that the experiences of Woodley are not consistent with what policymakers felt would be occurring in phase four. Westmoreland talked about the Vietnamese being modernized, infiltration slowing down, and the communist infrastructure near collapsing. This was inconsistent with the memories of Arthur Woodley and many other American in combat in Vietnam.

The types of experiences that Woodley was confronted with were the groundwork and what led to Heinl's observations. Arthur felt he became "an animal" in Vietnam. This was due to the killing and inhumanity that he witnessed everyday. These types of encounters have an influential pull on a persons emotions and morale. War life is extremely hard and demoralizing on a person. Yet, it is made even worse when the cause of your fight is uncertain and when there is an ongoing collapse of confidence from your fellow Americans at home.

The Bradley Method

The Bradley Method is a technique used to teach women how to have a natural childbirth. It is the Bradley belief that most women with the proper education, preparation, and the help of a coach can be taught to give birth naturally. There are many reasons why the Bradley Method is unique and a superior way to having a healthy and happy delivery.

The Bradley Method is a simple method that teaches self-awareness. It teaches women how to deal with the stress and pain of delivery by tuning in to her body. The Bradley Method is unique because it teaches couples ways to keep their pregnancy and delivery low risk. It teaches that relaxation is crucial to a good delivery.

Relaxation is the safest and most efficient method to reduce pain and to handle the pain women will experience. Most other methods seek to control the ambiance of labor, while The Bradley Method encourages women to relax and to trust their bodies. Labor is a natural thing and The Bradley Method encompasses this belief.

Write my Essay on The Bradley Method for me

A natural childbirth is important. Pregnancy, labor, and birth can have long term affects on children. No drug has ever been proven to be safe to a baby (Bradleybirth.com). The Bradley Method helps to give babies the best possible start in life that they can have. Marcia decided to try The Bradley Method after unsuccessfully using Lamaze with her first child. "Hee-hee hooing really didn't do the trick for me, and after fifteen hours of labor, I gave in and asked for pain medication. Had I felt better prepared and more confident, I think I could have made it." Diane Walbeck unfortunately learned the hard way that no medication is proven safe for an unborn child during labor. "I know this for a fact because my daughter had a severe reaction to the epidural I received during labor. Doctors do not tell you the risks mothers can develop seizures, the baby can have a fatal overdose, the baby will have seizures for life, brain damage, be at risk for SIDS, and reduced sucking reflex. Some studies suggest a link between medication used during labor and drug use later on in life. All doctors tell their pregnant patients to avoid cocaine and other such substances, but then offer the same family of drugs to them when they are in labor." Every mother wants the best for her child, and during delivery the best option is to use a no-drug policy.

Bradley Method classes are twelve weeks long; and they teach the mother and coach how to have the best pregnancy and delivery possible. The goals of The Bradley Method are to have natural childbirth, if circumstances allow, to have active participation by the husband as a coach, to teach the mother how to have excellent nutrition while pregnant and nursing, to teach the avoidance of all drugs, to teach relaxation and breathing, to teach "tuning-in" to a woman's own body, to teach immediate and continuous contact with the new baby, to teach the mother how to breastfeed beginning at birth, and to teach parents that they are responsible for the safety of the birth place, procedures, attendants, and emergency back-up. Leesa Brotherton had an excellent experience with The Bradley Method while delivering her first son. She had no drugs, tears, or episiotomies. She birthed a delightful baby boy; and commented that the pushing "felt great!" She thoroughly enjoyed using The Bradley Method, "What do you have to lose by having more information?"

In general, women do not know enough about the labor process, especially with her first child. The Bradley Method not only teaches women about child birth, but it also helps her to prepare her mind, body, and soul for child birth. It teaches her that child birth is a natural thing, and her body if given the chance, can do an excellent job of taking over and handling the pain.

Cricketer Shane Warne should be fined and banned from playing cricket. On the of January Shane Warne took a prescribed drug given to him by his mother. He took the drug without checking with his physio or doctor, which has been a policy for the cricketers for many months. One of the more common uses for this pill is drastic weight loss. Even when Warne has been asked to lose weight, there is no reason for taking this drug when there are side affects, which a cricketer would not want. Warne took the drug the day he announced that he was retiring from one-day cricket after the world cup.

When taking a drug, the policy for everyone in the cricket squad is that they cant take anything without the consent of their physio or doctor. Shane Warne took a prescription drug from his mother knowing that it could have been illegal. If you take a drug, then you must know what is in it, and by being a cricketer Shane

Warne should be more concerned about his body health than anyone. Because he didn't check with his physio or doctor if he was allowed to take the pill, it is clear that he has something to hide. If there is a strong policy about not taking drugs then you wouldn't neglect that unless there is something strange happening. Shane Warne knows all about drug testing so he has ignored the warning signs and should pay for what he has done.

Order custom research paper on shane warns should be banned from playing cricket

The drug Shane Warne took is known as Moduretic, which can be used to mask performance-enhancing drugs, which are illegal. Even though this pill reduces weight, it is very ineffective for long-term weight loss because the body only sheds fluid not fat. It can leave you dehydrated that is why it would be unwise to use it as a weight loss pill. Even though he has a shoulder injury, Dr Peter Lewis said that there are much better drugs available for reducing swelling which are perfectly legal. If this drug is not the best way to either reduce weight or reduce swelling, and the drug is illegal, then Shane Warne would want to use the best drug available. Shane took the drug to cover up his use of steroids there for he should be banned from playing cricket. Did Shane Warne take this drug out of stupidity even when he knows that he shouldn't take it or did Shane Warne take it because he was covering up his use of steroids?

Shane Warne is educated about the use of drugs and he should have known better. Out of plain stupidity Shane Warne took the drug and now has to face consequences. As a professional sportsman he is well informed about drugs in sport and is always being drug tested. Even Shane didn't know if the drug was illegal, he should have checked with the physio or doctor and because of his stupidity he has been caught. Shane Warne knew that he could be drug tested at any time but he chose to ignore the facts. If you ignore the rules and don't play fair then you should expect a penalty because it is not fair on the other players. Shane Warne wasn't thinking about the consequences when he took the drug and for that he must be banned from playing cricket until he learns that taking drugs is the wrong thing to do.

Shane Warne has been Stupid taking the drug. He has caused a lot of trouble for himself because he didn't checked with his physio or doctor before hand if it was a legal drug. He took the pill to lose weight quickly but the reasons why he took that particular drug to lose just isn't convincing. Shane Warne has not done the right thing by himself or his teammates and because of his careless, stupid actions he should be banned for years from playing cricket.

Based on the film we watched in class, "Racial Tracking," the theories applied to it in chapter 1 are manifest and latent functions of education under the functionalist perspective, class reproduction, hidden curriculum, unequal funding, and segregated and resegregated schools under the conflict perspectives, and education and the self-fulfilling prophecy, and education and labeling under the interactionist perspectives. The film took place in 15 in Calhoun County, Georgia. It dealt with how the school system worked and how black students were not treated fairly because the were not given equal opportunities to be placed in advanced placement classes as the white students were. There were examples of school activities that took place that were segregated and very unfair.

Manifest functions of education are the open, stated, and intended goals or consequences of activities within an organization or institution. Latent functions are the hidden, unstated, and sometimes unintended consequences of activities within an organization. Class reproduction relates to access to quality education being related to social class. The hidden curriculum is the transmission of cultural values and attitudes through implied demands found in rules, routines, and regulations of schools. Unequal funding is a source of inequality in education. Segregated and resegregated schools have serious negative implications for students. Education and the self-fulfilling prophecy say that stereotypes based on IQ and race make some students less capable of learning. Education and labeling result in certain students not being able to receive equal treatment because of the unabilitiy to understand a test.

The book I have read is called Missing pieces, written by Norma Fox Mazer. The most interesting part of this book is that when the 14-year-old girl, Jessie, after years of anxiety, starts to track down her father who walked out of the family when she was a baby. In addition, her conflicts with her mother would touch many people's hearts, as her emotions are very realistic and would echo with our emotions.

The most important character in the book is Jessie Wells, a 14-year-old girl whose father walked out of her family when she was a baby. Her family's incompleteness made her to seem more mature and heavy hearted than normal 14-year-old, she collects ¡§D words¡¨ because they ¡§dominant in doom and gloom¡¨(Mazer 4). She is unique and wants to be identified, as she claimed that ¡§don't call me a teenager, I'm a person¡¨ (Mazer117). She follows her will and sometimes can be describes as stubborn too, even though her mother forbids her from finding her father, she still do it secretly.

Maribeth Wells, Jessie's mother, could be described as the antagonist in the story. She, as a single mother, has to work hard in order to feed her family, but she never complained it. This demonstrates her characteristics as hard-working, responsible, dutiful, and soft hearted. Jessie often described her as ¡§a charity bureau¡¨ since she is always willing to help others (Mazer 6). She is a loving mother who cares her daughter more than anyone else; however, she failed to understand her daughter's emotions and loneliness of not having a father. She strongly discourages Jessie to find anything about her father, James Wells.

The primary conflict of the story is that Maribeth refuses to let Jessie know anything about James Wells, except the little romantic story that she told her. Nevertheless, Jessie decides that she is going to try everything she can to find out more about her father. Jessie's actions angered her mother, as Maribeth took Jessie's actions as breaking their promise and the friendly, loving relationship between a mother and a child. Disappointed Maribeth even cried ¡§I don't know you anymore, you're breaking my heart¡¨ when she found out what was Jessie doing behind her back (Mazer 104). Jessie was infuriated; she accused Maribeth that she ¡§throws out everything of James Wells's¡¨ (Mazer 117). Ever since the conflicts between them, there seemed to be tension and stiffness in the atmosphere of Wells' home.

Custom Essays on Missing Pieces

The resolution of the conflict approached when Maribeth finally realized that Jessie is no longer a little girl who knows and understands nothing. So as Jessie's birthday draw near, she decides to tell Jessie everything about her father. In addition, when James Wells happens to stay in the town for a few days ¡§working for his computer company as a roving troubleshot¡¨ and Maribeth informs Jessie that she saw her father ¡§came into the diner for dinner¡¨ one night (Mazer 10). She made up her mind that Jessie should be the one to decide if she wants to meet her father or not.

Jessie Wells changed gradually throughout the story, the desire to know more about James Wells turns her from a girl who thinks a lot, but hardly expresses her true feelings, to a girl who is willing to speak out what she feels and thinks. As she turned 15 in the story, she thinks and acts more like a young adult and became more independent, whereas in the beginning of the story, she somehow relied on her mother and never think of doing something alone.

The setting of this story is in a town somewhere in United States, which is not closely connected to the story. Basically a story about a father deserting his daughter and wife can be found in any town, city, or country. As long as a society exists, Jessie's story is everywhere, disregarding race, religion, and place. This is why I like this book, it seems real, it may happens around us, which makes me think more and share Jessie's emotions and thoughts while reading it.

My Mother's Name

One of the Holland's best-known novelists, Hannes Meinkema published her first collection of short stories, The Moon eater, in 174. The following short story, My Mother's Name, first appeared in this collection which portrays women's lives through the eyes of women writers from nine different countries. The situation that she has highlighted in the story reflects her personal life, the divorce of her parents and the arrival of an outsider. This situation offers identical possibilities of despair or contentment.

This story highlights the conflict between a daughter and her mother (Lisbeth). It visualizes the various scenarios, which the daughter and the mother face after the divorce. This divorce completely shattered Lisbeth's personality and left her daughter hopeless. Lisbeth always knew the way everything was ought to be done but after divorce she became entirely unsure about herself. This incident hit her so badly that she got comprehended from doing anything. She stopped taking her daily meals properly and in result she started to loose her weight drastically. On the other hand, her daughter was in no different situation than hers; she was going through the same trauma as her mother. She forgot how to enjoy her life and this resulted in loss of concentration in her studies.

Four years passed by in the same manner. The daughter loved her mother more than anything in the world. Her real life was at home, where she and her mother did all the work together. Both were trying to make their life better. Everything started to go wrong when Lisbeth acquired a new friend, Gerrit. Her daughter was fourteen then. Gerrit completely changed Lisbeth's life and her bond with her daughter. Slowly and gradually, Lisbeth stopped sharing her feelings with her daughter. In result, Lisbeth and her daughter started to draw away from each other. Her daughter got jealous upon hearing the news that Gerrit is coming to live with them. She started to hate her mother. She hated her mother because she was the one who brought Gerrit in to the house. She thought that by bringing him into the house, Lisbeth betrayed her. After some time, she realized that she would not achieve anything but sorrow by being jealous. This situation was not easy to co-op with but she still tried her best to change herself.

One day, she and Gerrit were home alone while Lisbeth was at a meeting. She decided to do her homework downstairs. Also, she wanted to have some contact between her and Gerrit. While she was studying, Gerrit started talking to her. After a while, he asked her to join him in having a drink. Gerrit gave her three glass of whisky and started asking her personal questions about her relationships. Gerrit took 'full advantage' of the situation while she was drunk. She came to realize what had happened to her in the morning but it was too late. She didn't know how to tell her mother that her boyfriend (Gerrit) had sex with her.

After some time, she managed to gather some courage and told her mom about what had happened. Upon hearing this news, Lisbeth became quite upset. She relieved some of Lisbeth's tension by letting her know that they have used the preventative. Later, the daughter heard Gerrit and Lisbeth arguing. This reminded her of the old days, when Lisbeth used to have arguments with her father. Eventually, Gerrit left the house. After Gerrit's exit from their lives, things were not the same. Lisbeth quit talking to her daughter. Her daughter blamed herself for ruining her mother's life. So, she decided to talk to her mother about all this mess. She started to cry as she asked her mother the reason of being mad. Lisbeth apologized to her and everything became the same as it used to be.

Hannes Meinkema story effectively develops the theme of misery and degraded state of a child after the separation of the parents. Also, she tells the readers how an outsider can create havoc on a relationship.

Review of Minority Report Reviewed

Minority Report is a great depiction of what can happen to the world if our current law system "innocent until proven guilty" fails. In Minority Report people were tried for something they didn't even do which is against all values and standards that we have today. The whole "precrime system" dealt with catching criminals who were going to commit the crime before they did it, so how are they criminals I ask? They aren't. Everybody has free will and they have a choice to make, even the criminal could have thought to himself at the last second that he didn't really want to do what he was about to do. That's mainly with what I disagree in the movie, the concept of predestination, I believe there is no such thing and that everybody has a choice to do what they want.

I completely agree with James Beradinelli when he said that Minority Report is a movie all about free will or predestination because he was right. The movie deals with that idea the whole time and it asks the same question all the way to the end. When the precogs see their visions they are infallible visions, supposedly, but that's not true because sometimes the precogs don't all agree on one vision. For example Agatha saw her own mother being drowned but the other precogs did not agree on that vision, this was because it wasn't her mother that was being drowned, but the same exact looking crime being committed at the same time and the other two precogs thought that it was the same crime, thus the system didn't always work. Also when Beradinelli said "The prediction drives the act a self fulfilling prophesy" he was right. If somebody is accused of murder that will most likely lead them to run until they have no other resort but to kill somebody to keep on running, that is what happened to Anderton in the movie. He ran until he was basically chased into the place of the murder he was "supposed to commit" but he doesn't commit that murder, he said no, which shows that there is free will and predestination doesn't exist.

The articles made some good points also, mainly about the precogs being enslaved for the good of the population. I don't think this is ethical at all because every single person has the same god given rights. The precogs had no rights whatsoever; they were enslaved so that the population will feel safer and better about their community, but the population paid no point to the three people who had to be sacrificed for that good. The people in the population are basically giving up part of their freedom just to be safe from murderers, and come on, we all know you don't just get killed for nothing; there must be something you did wrong to someone for them to kill you, just like the cheating wife in the beginning of the movie. If she stayed devoted to her husband none of that would have happened and they would be happily living as I speak! But back to the point the precogs are getting the dirty side of the deal and they don't even know it.

The last point I am going to make is the biggest, you simply can't put innocent people away for doing nothing. The people in the movie didn't even get a fair trial, they were just caught and put to sleep. If the precrime cops caught the people and then held them till after the murder, they would have never done it, and probably never will do it as long as they know they are going to get caught the next time, so they ARE innocent people. The whole idea doesn't even make sense, what if you just think of killing somebody, is that a good enough reason? Is that premeditated murder too? I think the precrime idea is filled with flaws and would never work as long as people have a free will, and can choose to do anything.

Compensation and benefits is something each and every employee is concerned with. When going into an interview with a prospective company almost all people have the question of salary in their mind. So has this changed in society today? Not really and should it?

There is a lot of cynicism surrounding performance appraisals and most of it seems well deserved. Older executives seem to take these appraisals a lot more serious then younger employees. How can this be changed so that all employees are on the same page when it comes to appraisal time? Cleaver writes "it's no wonder, then, that mangers don't give the appraisals-or the employees being scored-the care they deserve a thought to consider, the next time you pen flits down that tidy column of boxes, bouncing randomly between "very good" and "excellent."

Compensation and benefits is something each and every employee is concerned with. When going into an interview with a prospective company almost all people have the question of salary in their mind. So has this changed in society today? Not really and should it?

According to an article by Chris Howard, of the Canadian Business Magazine, "No one likes performance appraisals. But if you can't avoid them, there are ways to get by." By appraisal values he is speaking about what happens when employees are hired and then go through the appraisal for a chance of a rise.

Most companies do not even have annual evaluations, about 45% of workers. If employees are not appraised for their achievements then they will begin to resent the company in which they work. This type of act is being called the "vanishing performance appraisal" which states that either an appraisal gets done, or it does not get done properly.

Companies are also instilling a new type of appraisal which is done not solely from the past like appraisals usually are. This appraisal would be done together and the employee would set goals for the future with their supervisor. This appraisal would also assess observable behavior rather than abstracts.

With the economy in a recession more and more companies are less likely to give their employees any form of appraisal so they will be able to maintain a positive budget. A new way to the appraisal is by having the self-appraisal concept. This concept would make the supervisor's job much easier. Staff would check with other coworkers to determine how their performance is being ranked. When time for appraisals comes around then the employee want be as shocked if there is something nasty to be said.

A lot of companies do not seem to take appraisals very seriously and base their rewards on other merit factors. Within the organization of Oakton performance appraisals are taken somewhat seriously, but it all depends on who is your supervisor. If you have a manager who is aware of the budget and the incoming amounts then the appraisal and compensation the employee gets may be a little more difficult. Employees usually get compensated nicely for their actions throughout the year. However most supervisors do not know or remember what happened throughout the year leading up to the review.

The way that a character portrays him or herself in a short story, contributes greatly to the sucess of that piece of literature. In The Story of an Hour, written by Kate Chopin, there are only a few characters but the main one is Mrs. Mallard, a soft-spoken lady with heart trouble. In this story she seems to be the victim of an overbearing but sometimes loving husband. Even though Mrs. Mallard is unhappy in her marriage, she is still too afraid to say anything to her husband. Many people say that Mrs. Mallard is a cold-hearted woman who rejoices at her husbands death, yet others say that her husband is the one to blam for her reaction. I, on the other hand, agree with both sides because they both contributed to Mrs. Mallards actions. Everyone has their own opinion, but who can say which one is right.

I belive that there are thousands of women all over the world who live in a place where their every move is made by their spouse. In The Story of an Hour, Mrs. Mallard lives and breathes every word that her husband speaks. Even though she did what her husband told her to do that didnt make her a weak person. Holding all of her emotions back just to satisfy Mr. Mallard made her a stronger character. She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength, this is how the text described her, which supports my opinion of her overwhelming strength.

Mrs. Mallard appeared to be very unhappy with her marriage. She was so unhappy that she rejoiced at the news of her husbands death. In a way she felt trapped by her husbands ability to make choices for her. She said it over and over under her breath free, free, free! These were the words of Mrs. Mallard after pondering the idea of her husbands tragedy. She had never been able to do things for herself or live life to the fullest and she made that clear when she said that There would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would live for herself. Mrs. Mallard was glad that she would finally be able to live life for herself instead of her husband, so she was in a sense free. Even though Mr. Mallard made her unhappy at times, she was still too afraid to say anything to him. She might not have even realized her unhappiness until the opportunity arose for her to consider her options. She cared more for her husbands happiness and that showed a great deal of sacrifice.

Theres a lot of controversy about Mrs. Mallards character in this story. Some people say that she is a shameful excuse of a wife who didnt care about her husband. They thought that she was a cold-hearted woman who rejoiced over her husbands death without even knowing for sure that he was dead. There are also people who thought that she was a sacrificial wife who was trapped in a marriage by an overbearing husband who didnt even love her. I personally agreed with some parts of both opinions. I dont think that Mrs. Mallard should have kept completely silent about her feelings towards her husband, but Mr. Mallard was too pushy. Overall, Mrs. Mallards ability to bite her tongue was a main reason as to why she was so unhappy. If she had been honest from the beginning of their marriage then she might not have ended up in her husbands so-called tragedy of death.

There are many different ways to analyse the charateristics of Mrs. Mallard in The Story of an Hour. Some might say that she was a polite young woman who minded her husband, while others would say that she was a cruel person that didnt have any feelings. Either way, Mrs. Mallards character will be a topic that no one will be able to agree on!
