Junk Mail

On an average, people receive about 4 pounds of junk mail a year (Headden 41). The companies that sent this mail pay an annual fee of $80,000 to learn where people on their clients' lists have moved (Headden 4). However, out of 100 consumers at least 1 will answer these ads (Headden 4). I have received a piece of junk mail from Bank One. Although junk mail can be a hindrance, it may also be both attractive and persuasive.

The colors and font sizes are used as virtual tools that attract the consumers attention. Most of the front is covered with blue. Where the open window is there is a burst that goes from white to solid blue. The way the color is tinted draws your focus to the person to whom it was sent. The words that are written there are intended to catch your eye. There is a yellow stripe across the bottom of the back of the envelope. On it are letters written in black and in size eighteen font with about four words and the telephone number in bold. On the pictures are words written in bold and normal type with twenty-four font in white.

The use of pictures and icons in adverting serve to persuade the consumer to open that particular piece of junk mail. There are two pictures on the back of the envelope. On the left, there is a mother and her two young children, a boy and a girl, in a car. The mother has a smile on her face and looks as if she is thinking about something. The children are playing in the back. On the right side, the picture shows the same family on Dumbo at Disneyland. They are laughing and you can tell that they are having a good time. On the other side of the envelope, there is the Disney emblem, the outline of Mickey Mouse's face and ears. There is also a picture of the credit card that Bank One is trying to promote. This shows that if you get the card then you would be able to go to Disneyland as well. Help with essay on Junk Mail

Another important strategy that advertisers use is their use of written language. On the envelope of this piece of junk mail there are different persuasive words such as "Disney Dream Reward Dollars," "You're Pre-Approved," "You have a practical side………… You have a Disney side," "Free," and Receive Charter Cardmember." "The overworked word 'free' is still the most powerful word in the junk mail lexicon" says Susan Headden in "The Junk Mail Deluge" (Headden 4). All of these words are being used to draw in the consumer and to make their product appeal to people. On the inside, on a paper that is colored there are the words "You'll love both sides of this story." This continues from the front of the envelope to continually entice the reader to continue reading on.

One advertisement strategy that McClintock mentions, Plain Folk, is found in the piece of junk mail that I have found. In this strategy, we see people just like you and me doing thinks that we do. Ann McClintock, author of "Propaganda Techniques in Today's Advertising," states, "We see people making long-distance calls for just the reasons that we do-to put the baby on the phone to Grandma or tell Mom we love her" (McClintock 05). The pictures that are on the back of the envelope shows an ordinary family, maybe even a single parent, driving the kids. Then they are at Disneyland. So, why could other people just like this family not do the same thing? This question is put into the consumers mind and works its way to make sense.

Visual Aspects, Persuasive Language, as well as the McClintock Strategy all contribute to the allure of junk mail to the consumer. It has become clear to me that even by just giving a piece of mail a glance you open the door to be enticed to open it up and consider the offer.

I. Abstract

The vapor pressure of a liquid is the measure of the ability of molecules to escape from the surface of a solid or liquid. The intermolecular forces holding the molecule together are broken when the temperature is raised, due to the kinetic energy of the molecules. As more molecules build up in the space above the solid or liquid, more of them collide with the surface and some may adhere. At a fixed temperature the system will reach a state of dynamic equilibrium. At this point the pressure exerted by the molecules in the space above the solid or liquid, by definition, is the vapor pressure of the solid or liquid. When external pressure is exerted on the liquid, the vapor pressure also increases because the molecules are compressed, which also increases their energy.

II. Introduction

To determine the heat of vaporization we used a common method. Various external applied pressures are applied to the liquid while heating and the point at which the liquid boils is recorded.

The formula for the equilibrium between a pure liquid and its vapor is equation #1

X(l) X(g) (P, T) (eq. 1)

There is a definite relationship that exists between the pressure and the temperature at equilibrium. This relationship is equation #

dPdT = (eq. )

In equation # dP and dT are referring to an infinite number of changes for both pressure and temperature in a system at equilibrium with pure substances and both phases always present. ÄS and ÄV are referring to the entropy change and the volume when a phase transforms into another at both constant pressure and temperature. Since ÄG is 0 for a change in state the ÄS term in the equation can be replaced using and the resulting equation will produce equation #

dPdT = (eq. )

The Claperon equation is an exact expression that can be applied to many different phase equilibria. Equations and are known as the Claperon equation. When a Vaporization occurs there is a change in volume that is standard. ÄVvap (which is also Vg-V1) is about Vg. If Vg is substituted for ÄV equation #4 is the result

dpdT = (eq. 4)

Calculus says that dlnp = and that , after algebra and manipulation equation #4 can be turned magically into equation #5

= - (eq. 5)

If the compressibility factor of the gas is introduced as Z produces equation #6

Z = (eq. 6)

When equation #5 is multiplied by R/R most of the variable can be substituted with Z. When this happens a new convenient form of the Claperon equation is the result equation #7

= - (eq. 7)

Equation #7 can be rearranged to produce equation #8 and then it can be integrated to produce the Clausius Claperon equation, equation #

(eq. 8)

(eq. )

III. Experimental Methods

Equipment Needed (Typical Boiling Point Apparatus)

5 Liter Ballast Bulb Thermometer Adapter

Closed Tube Manometer Reflux Condenser

Double Neck Distillation Flask Bent Glass Tube with Adapter

Thermometers Electric Heating Mantle

Variac Long Pieces of Rubber Tubing

Rubber Pressure Tubing Long Pieces of Heavy Wall

Utility Clamps or Clamp Holders

Iron Ring Boiling Chips

The apparatus should be assembled to resemble Figure #1. Be sure to support all glass ware with clams at critical points. The double neck flask should be about one-third full of distilled de-ionized water. Add one or two boiling chips to the water. Stopcock X and stopcock S are not to be opened at the same time. Heat the water until vapor begins to condense on a drip from the thermometer bulb. Open the stopcock X and watch the manometer until both the mercury levels in the manometer and the thermometer are steady. Record the two readings. Record the ambient air temperature at the manometer every time you record both the boiling point and the vapor pressure. To take another reading close stopcock X and lower the heating mantle. Allow the flask to cool enough to stop the boiling and introduce new air into the system by opening stopcock S. Close stopcock S. Repeat the procedure until you have readings for the following pressures Decending 560, 450, 40, 40, 160, 10, and 0 Torr. Ascending 110, 10, 140, 180, 60, 60, 470, and 580 Torr. Record all data and proceed to calculations.

What is politics? I think the best shorthand definition of politics that anybody's ever proposed is Aristotle's. And Aristotle said politics is free persons deliberating the question how ought we to order our life together. Free persons deliberating the question how ought we to order our life together. Every political question of consequence is a moral question. What is fair? What is just? What serves the common good? Fairness, justice, good these are all moral terms. "Dulce et Decorum Est"

Looking back now, we can all recognise that The Great War was nothing but an "ecstasy of fumbling", from the drawing board to the battlefield, but nearly a century on has anything changed? Is asymmetric warfare as sanitised as we may be lead to believe, or is it all a cover up for a more sinister truth, like that which is depicted in Wilfred Owen's poem "Dulce Et Decorum Est"?

With every line Owen puts me further into the role of the foot soldier on the battlefield, describing his very own experiences, to potent effect. He depicts the horror when a platoon is gassed, in a surprise attack.

The structure of the poem goes a long way to create this realism, which is responsible for incurring such vivid images. The poem is set into four verses, each structured to encapsulate an image of the exact moment in your mind. From the first verse, it's slow pace, as the soldiers "limp on ..with fatigue." To the sudden change of pace as, in "an ecstasy of fumbling" the "outstripped five-nines" drop down on the unsuspecting soldiers, in verse two. However, the third verse is perhaps the most important as in just two lines we hear a young soldier "guttering, choking, drowning", dying on the page in front of us. In the fourth verse we see the final scene, after they have flung the young soldier into the "wagon", Owen turns to the reader, in second person, and laments his final thought to the reader, cursing anyone who ever dared to say "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori".

Custom writing service can write essays on "Dulce Et Decorum Est"

With every word Owen draws me further into the belief, that I am there; watching my friends die, for something they know nothing about; for their country. The poet's imagery is astounding, you feel "every jolt", you are there "bent double.. and knock-kneed, lame.. deaf". I try to fit the clumsy equipment when your leader screams "Gas!Gas! Quick, boys" and "through the dim misty panes and thick green light". I see my friend "before my helpless eyes.. like a man on fire or lime.. Watch the white eyes writhing in his face and hear his froth corrupted lungs", it is I, the reader, that hears all of this, as Owen did. It is this mortifying imagery that the poet uses to make me feel like his "friend", and that is why after reading the poem, you too can't help but wonder why any human has ever underwent such vile conditions, to die for such a cause.

The meaning, however may well have been lost had it not been for this chaotic and shocking scene, portrayed with such fine use of rhythm and rhyme. Owen uses his particular literary techniques, to make the rhythm and rhyme go hand in hand. Owen calls upon the use of assonance and half rhyme to depict the pathetic rhythm of the men's march. As the men "curse through sludge...began to trudge...limp, on bloodshod", the sound of every heavy footstep, the panting, the slosh of the mud almost sounds out of the page. The rhythm remains; like the battle; long, slow and dull. Even in the "ecstasy of fumbling...yelling out and stumbling", and Owen's dramatic speech at the end of the poem, still the fatigue sets the dark, depressing rhythm. Making the soldier and reader think alike, and wonder why.

Wilfred Owen's poem is suffused with the horror of battle, and yet finely structured and innovative. Owens use of half-rhyme gives his poetry a dissonant, disturbing quality that amplifies his themes.

As we sip our tea and watch the evening news on the "box", we could be forgiven for forgetting that there is a war on. All we see are blip's in computer crosshairs, as a multi-billion pound coalition force "neutralises the threat". In places where the macabre realities of trench warfare are seemingly forgotten, the worst crime is that the guerrillas and generals alike will forever still spout out the old lie "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori."

Introduction

Cloning is not very popular subject throughout the world. Most people don’t like the idea of cloning because it is playing god. On the hand cloning is a great idea if it is used correctly in giving the ability to infertile parents to finally have a child, it’s fine. But that is not all it is used for, and what does the law think about the idea, what does society think of it, and most of all what is it.

Statement of Findings

What Is Cloning?

Cheap Custom Essays on Cloning Under Australain Law

Cloning is the production of a group of generally identical cells or organisms, all descended from a single individual. The member of a clone have precisely the same Characteristics, except where mutilation and environmentally caused development variation has occurred. There are three different types of cloning. Embryo Cloning is a medical technique, which produces identical twins or triplets. It edits the process that nature uses to produce twins or triplets. One or more cells are removed from a fertilized embryo and encouraged to develop into one or more duplicate embryos. Twins or triplets are thus formed, with identical DNA. Reproductive Cloning uses the technique, which is intended to produce a duplicate of an existing animal. It has been used to clone a sheep and other mammals. The DNA from an ovum is removed and replaced with the DNA from a cell removed from an adult animal. Then, the fertilized ovum now called a pre-embryo, is implanted in a womb and allowed to develop into a new animal and finally

Biomedical cloning is a procedure whose initial stages are identical to adult DNA cloning. However, the stem cells are removed from the pre-embryo with the intent of producing tissue or a whole organ for transplant back into the person who supplied the DNA. The pre-embryo dies in the process. The goal of therapeutic cloning is to produce a healthy copy of a sick persons tissue or organ for transplant.

There is plenty of controversy with cloning as with other aspects of genetic engineering that involves human beings, great concern has been voiced over the potential for human cloning. The possibility that the technology required for human cloning will be perfected in the foreseeable future is quite possible, Although there are protective restrictions on all government-sponsored research in this field. Some of the reasons why people think cloning is a bad idea are that the clone would not be a real human, but a clone would have exactly the same status that an identical twin already does. Both are derived from a single fertilized ovum. Some say cloning is playing God”. But cloning creates life from life, and is just an extension of routine in vitro fertilization procedures. These are just some of the reasons why most people disagree with cloning.

Why Clone Humans?

There are plenty of reasons for cloning, some of the more main reasons include. A cure for infertility where cloning has the potential to change the world for infertile couples almost overnight. It would put a hold on bad parents because human gives you the opportunity to participate in choosing the parents for your clone. You could become a better parent as human cloning can improve the parent-child relationship. Raising the child would be like having a child with an instruction manual, which means you would have a head start on your child’s talents. Human cloning technology is expected to result in several miraculous medical breakthroughs. We would be able to cure cancer is cloning leads to a better understanding of cell differentiation. Theories exist about how cloning may lead to a cure for heart attacks, a revolution in cosmetic surgery, organ or organs transplants. All of these breakthroughs in cloning technology will save thousands of lives.

Why Clone Nature?

Endangered Species would be saved as in the research leading up to human cloning. Scientists will perfect the technology to clone animals and thus the world would forever preserve endangered species, including humans. Animals and plants could be cloned for medical purposes.

What Does the Law Say?

The law covers scientists practicing cloning quite well in the ‘ Human Cloning And Other Prohibited Practices Act 00 ’ where it is illegal to collect viable human embryo from the body of a woman. As well as using precursor cells from a human embryo or a human fetus to create a human embryo, or developing such an embryo, along with. Developing a human embryo outside the body of a woman for more than 14 days and creating or developing a human embryo containing genetic material provided by more than persons. And that’s not all. Most of these offences ensure a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment. A case study could not be found.

A Survey was constructed on the subject of cloning. And 0 members of the public were asked a variety of six questions. The questions were

1. Do you like the idea of cloning?

. Do you think cloning animals to prevent animal extinction should be allowed?

. Are you aware of the laws which cover cloning?

4. Do you think human organs should be cloned, for use in organ transplants?

5. Do you agree with the idea of having an instruction manual for your child?

6. Do you think infertile couples should have access to this type of technology?

7. If you had the chance would you clone yourself?

In response to Question 1 â€" Over 0% of people sad that they did not agree with cloning, some of the reasons were ‘playing god‘, ‘not natural’.

In response to Question â€" About 60% of people agreed that cloning animals to prevent extinction should be practiced. The main reasons were ‘to prevent extinction’.

In response to Question â€" Almost All (around 8%) of people were not sure on the laws associated with cloning mainly because it wasn’t important.

In response to Question 4 â€" Around 60% said that they shouldn’t be as in the end it will result in cloning of humans.

In response to Question 5 â€" All of the 5 peopled asked replied with a quick, ‘No’ and claimed that it was a stupid idea.

In response to Question 6 â€" A large percentage (around 80%) said that this sort of procedure should be accessible to those sorts of couples.

In response to Question 7 â€" About 0% of people said that they wouldn’t clone themselves and the other 0% had a joke and said that the clone could work for them.

Conclusion

Although millions of people through the world, disagree with cloning and any sort of genetic engineering. The time will come in the future when scientists will experiment more and more to create fake life in the world. They start with small animals, then bigger animals then our closest relative the monkey. Then the rumors of a cloned baby won’t be rumors anymore, but your neighbor’s kid.

In her book "No Logo", Klein poses the question 'If brands are not products but ideas, attitudes, values and experiences, why can't they be culture too?' and it seems that Nike shares this query. Rather, it seemed Nike shared this query about two decades ago and has since proceeded to transcend the emblazoning of shoes and tracksuits with swooshes as their key form of marketing to seeing the world as a blank Nike canvas, ready for painting. As it turns out, Nike is quite the artist as it has effectively branded cityscapes, clothing, sports, celebrities and youth culture all over the globe. No longer is Nike's raison d'être the product itself, instead, as Klein suggests, the brand has expanded to become the image of Nike, the attitude of Nike the essence of Nike.

It seems as though Nike will stop at nothing along what appears to be its path to world domination and the degree and effect of their global brainwashing leaves little room for any opposition from organisations like Nikewatch.

Unfortunately, it seems as though Nikewatch is fighting an uphill battle, as its attempts to reclaim space in order to critique Nike don't appear to be too effective. This point notwithstanding, one cannot overlook the fact that Nikewatch is a much newer organisation than Nike and by no means has the same amount money to fund its cause. This, I feel, is the crux of the matter as money is the key to creating awareness as it would allow Nikewatch to reach people on a large scale and thus increase the chances of reclaiming or at least impinging on Nike's space.

In order for Nikewatch to be a true threat, they need to follow a process of expansion similar to Nike's so as to reach the same audience and 'co-branding' is the most likely to be effective as it mirrors one of Nike's tactics and the use of high-profile celebrities attracts people to a cause and makes it more memorable. As Klein states, '…the big brands know that profits from logowear do not flow from the purchase of the garment but also from people seeing your logo on "the right people".'

Nature's design has always provided a state of social inequality for all life. While some humans enter into the world with pre-determined advantages, including, but not limited to, gifted intelligence, inherited wealth, beautiful physical features, healthy physical conditions, and quality upbringing; others are not subject to such fortunate endowments. To those who are endowed with life's decided advantages, these features help secure a future life of quality and comfort that may not be available to those without such advantages. In contrast, those who escape nature's goodwill are often trapped within a lifetime of negative discrimination and social oppression. As human knowledge grows with civilization advancements, philosophers and social scientists begin to question whether a person's quality of life should be arbitrarily based upon Darwinian selection. Because human intelligence has led to civilization advancements that allow mankind to challenge nature's whims and laws, many philosophers believe that social structure can be designed to balance against nature's injustices. One justification for creating a system of social equality is the diversification of resources- people, ideas, and cultures, to name a few. The diversification principle allows the exploration of a wider range of ideas, since people from diverse backgrounds often have very different interpretation and opinion on various subjects; whereas unanimity is harmful to human's creative spirit and drowns out debate. Under this consideration, social equality is mutually beneficial to both disadvantaged individuals and to the entire society.

According to John Stuart Mill, human civilization has often ignored contrarian challenges to popular ideas. In On Liberty, Mill suggests that ideas should be subject to verification by evaluating the possibility for other considerations

However unwillingly a person who has a strong opinion may admit the possibility that his opinion

may be false, he ought to be moved by the consideration that, however true it may be, if it is not fully,

frequently, and fearlessly discussed, it will be held as a dead dogma, not a living truth. (p.4, On Liberty)

Mill's language urges "frequent and fearless discussions" to test the quality of truth for a popular idea to avoid the adoption of a false theory that may provide an improper assumption for the construction of future ideas. In a culture of diverse ideas, equal weight given to different opinions diminishes such possibility, and new theories that improve an old idea frequently originate from minority groups. Minority groups in the population use their unique life experiences to test and challenge popular ideas that may be blind to the social majority. Without the laws establishing social equality for minorities, the majority population misses an opportunity to gain new knowledge that benefits the entire populace.

In addition to the loss of innovation from minorities in the absence of their social equality, the society loses continuous examination and debate on its universally accepted beliefs. Mill explains "truth…is so much a question of the reconciling and combining of opposites" that without sufficient analysis of its antagonistic views, it lacks the test of competing logics that determines its superiority over them. (p.46, On Liberty) He describes educated men whose "conclusion(s) may be true, but (they) might be false for anything they know." (p. 6, On Liberty) For theories that have long been recognized for their truths, subjection to new tests verifies their strengths to future generations. Instituting social equality allows minorities to express new perspectives that question the universality and quality of pre-existing information. The process of cross-examination either strengthens the supporting arguments for a particular belief, reveals new concepts that adds to the existing idea, or rejects its acceptance for a new era when its values are no longer embraced.

#- Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.

Once you meet me your going to be curious as to how I got to be such a great person. You are going to be thinking how did she get so smart, funny, caring, strong, motivated, and determined. I'm going to let you in on a secret I wasn't always this great. it took time and help from one of the most important person in my life, my dad.

Bob is his name and he's helped me in so many ways he will never know.

I guess you could say I am a big daddy's girl. I looked up to the guy. He is my mentor. I always thought to myself if I could be if the guy he is, then wow, Ill be something great. Becoming the person that I am was hard but through his support, love and advice I feel that I have achieved it.Help with essay on college essay

My dad used to say to me "education is the key to life. The more you try to learn, the better off in life you will be." He used to tell me its not about what other people think or how much you spend on the education its about how much YOU put in to it. "Always try your hardest at everything you do and if an education opportunity comes along go for," he said. I guess that's why I always have. From as far back as I can remember I always tried to get involved. I joined everything from Girl Scouts to soccer to Junior Achievement, Leo club. I took many different classes in high school to allow me to learn a wide variety of different things. I took land, air, and transportation engineering, entrepreneurship, astronomy, finance, law, and cooking. I want to take his advice and try as much as I possibly could.

Always laugh at life and take it one step at a time. My dad taught be that a sense of humor will go over well in the world he said making yourself laugh and making others laugh with you opens up the door to meeting new people allowing you to learn about what they have to offer. I like to try to joke around with many of my peers and teachers I think it breaks the ice for more information about life and the world around me. I feel that everyone is more comfortable when in laughter and in a happy mood. I feel if no one had told me the importance of a sense of humor I would continue to be quiet and following everyone else's lead. I would have never wanted to come out of my comfort zone and be a leader. It would have hindered me from being a treasure and a president of Leo club which I love and enjoy doing.

Being caring and understanding is another characteristic I am proud of inheriting from my father. Having the ability to sit next to a person and listen to them and being able to offer them advice in the best way I know how. Being able to grow up and allow myself to care for everyone I meet and want to be a friend to so many despite their diversity, their status, and their physical features. Through my ability to care for others I was able to meet so many loving people at Cedar Brook Nursing Home, where I volunteered for three summers. It allowed me to join Leo Club and be a help to my community by serving them. It's helped me through life to develop friendships that have lasted through ten years. It has helped me be a good sister to both my two older brothers by being there for them through there hard times and experiences.

My characteristics that I value the most though are my strength, motivation, and determination. These three characteristics have helped me achieve so much, when people told me it couldn't me done these three have pushed me to my limits. To lead my peers in helping there community, to work hard and purchase my own car, clothes and entertainment while saving for my future education. My dad showed me the way to these by insuring me that whatever I put my mind too I will achieve it.

My influences through my father were more useful to me then anyone will ever know I am very thankful to have had his support and love. I will always remember everything he taught me and apply it to everything I do in life. There for I know that I will achieve what I desire and will be successful to my full potential.

Catch me if you can

'Catch me if you can' is a true story of a real fake. It has been told in a movie as well as in a novel. The novel was written by Frank W. Abagnale with the assistance of Stan Redding. The novel was published by Broadway books in 00. 'Catch me if you can' is an autobiography of Frank Abagnale and is set throughout America and Europe during the early 170's.

Catch me if you can is about one of the most cunning impostors, conmen, forgers, and escape artists in history. From the beginning to the end Frank's criminal adventures are descriptively and enlighteningly told through this thrilling autobiography. Frank was a runaway teenager from home. His intelligence and his need for survival collided when he realised he could become a conman and getaway with it. The novel begins as a struggle for survival but then becomes a miraculous chase between a dozen governments and Frank W. Abagnale. During his brief but infamous career he was a co-pilot for Pan American airlines, practiced law without a licence, cunningly became a sociology lecturer and fraudulently obtained a supervising role at a hospital. Throughout his career as a criminal he discovers his personal identity. 'Catch me if you can' describes the transformation of an innocent teenager to a young, intellectual criminal mastermind. Frank Williams, Robert Monjo, Frank Adams and Robert Conrad were all an alias of Frank Abagnale.

The story begins in Frank's teenage years when his father, mother and Frank were all living together. One day Frank arrived home to be informed that his parents were getting a divorce. This scared Frank, and resulted in him leaving home and surviving lacking a job and without support from his parents. He became a conman and a cunning and gifted one at that. His goal was to forge cheques in order to support himself. To enable him to forge checks he needed to look respectable so he co-piloted in Pan Am and flew around America in a pilot's uniform exchanging his false checks around at hundreds of naive banks. After a year the federal government were on to him and were then chasing him around the country. From city to city, country to country he was never a safe man again. This resulted in Frank moving from place to place to avoid the police. In the many pleasant places he lived he met people and these people offered him many different positions. He became a hospital supervisor, a lawyer without a license and a sociology professor by forging certificates and documents he was given these positions.

Frank later made a choice to retire from his criminal career and live in France under the alias of Robert Monjo but was later caught by the French police and sentenced to imprisonment. He was then required to serve time in a dozen other countries. Frank was finally extradited back to the U.S after coming to an agreement with a Swedish judge. Frank served time in the U.S but later came to an agreement with the government to work with the FBI in fraud cases and identifying false checks. In my opinion the moral message is that pursuing a career like his you would always be on the run and would never be safe. You would eventually be caught and would always be required to change your identity to avoid the police.

Frank constantly was required to change his personal identity through means of forging documents, having numerous aliases, changing his occupation and residence. Frank experienced an identity crisis when he questioned what he was doing and wanted to cease his career but was (at the time) forced to change his identity to avoid dozens of federal governments.

The divorce of Frank's parents resulted in Frank questioning his identity in terms of why things happened and what was going to happen to him. Franks dad played a role in assisting and supporting Frank in everything he did even whilst a criminal. Age determined his identity because he was youthful, inexperienced and miserable at the stage when he ran away from home. In chapter six Frank mentions that he was so deeply immersed in assumed identities that he forgot he was Frank W. Abagnale. Frank was so confident and smooth that he escaped from prison and fooled so many people even Sean O'riley who was with the FBI and who was solely dedicated to catching Frank. Frank was so self assured he was a cocky and happy conman that could persuade anyone. His principle of sustaining his role as a con artist was the presentation, exuding an air of confidence and authority, charm, courtesy, being seemingly sincere and affecting the cool arrogance of a tycoon.

An important challenge for Frank was to play a game of cat and mouse with thousands of cats always right behind him. The most significant challenge was the inhumane, outrageous, disgusting and immoral six months he served in a French dungeon. The prison challenged his identity, because it was a battle to maintain sanity. Frank hallucinated about roles to maintain his sanity. For example he would pretend he was operating on the president or having a wild date with a beautiful young woman. His challenge in the French prison was simply survival physically and mentally.

Frank applies real life encounters, imagery and relevant information to develop his ideas about identity. In my opinion imagery is the most effective style of developing a thorough understanding of the novel.

Frank uses imagery to portray his challenge in the French prison. When an American consulate asked Frank how he was coping Frank replied "How am I doing?" "I'll tell you how I'm doing, I'm sick, I'm sore, I'm naked, I'm hungry, I'm covered with lice. I don't have a bed, I don't have a toilet, I don't have a wash basin. I'm sleeping in my own shit. I have no light, no razor, no toothbrush, no nothing. I don't know what month it is. I don't even know what year it is, for Christ's sake….I'm being treated like a mad dog. I'll probably go mad if I stay here much longer. I'm dying in here. That's how I'm doing!" This is a total contrast to when he was travelling the world, stealing millions of dollars and having affairs with gorgeous young women. His many cars, his $000 pinstripe suit, his luxurious apartments in several cities are all pleasant imageries of his success as a con artist.

Frank relates his point of view to the novel frequently. He looks back on what he did and comments plenty of times. He shares his views with the reader on what he believes about things and the way activities should be performed.

'Catch me if you can' was a highly enjoyable novel. Not only because it was so exciting but because it was true. I disliked the way Frank went into detail about how to forge a check. I found it quite boring when he explained how he forged the checks because it isn't really something that I want to know about or am interested in. I recommend this novel to anyone over the age of fifteen because it is aimed at adults due to the complicated language used. By reading this novel I have learnt that his personality changed to suit every theme. For example when he was a pilot he would have to act confident and smooth. He was constantly changing his personal identity to suit each theme. I give the novel 4 ½ out of 5.

Change is an ongoing part of life, everything and everyone changes. In David Williamson's play Money and Friends we see change in the main character of Peter. Peter's change can be seen in his decision to be honest and later vindictive as well as his change of thoughts about his friends and friendships. These changes also have some important and positive effects on the other characters in the play, such as Penny, Alex, Vicki, Margaret and Conrad.

One technique that Williamson uses in his play to show Peter's change is through the narrator. He uses the character Margaret as the narrator in the play. She introduces the play and the other characters and also ends it. Margaret has discussions with the audience, which keeps the play moving and keeps everyone up to date with what is happening both on and off the stage. At the beginning of the play Margaret describes her friends, and for Peter she says that he is considerate, peacemaker, gentle, and a listener to all of his friends problems. He agrees with what everyone says even if he doesn't.

As the play continued, Peter's personality can been seen differently as he makes his decision to be honest with his friends and tells them what he really thinks, not what he used to do in the past. By the end of the play, it is learnt that Peter now likes to have his say, and doesn't worry as much about the consequences of his actions. He tells people his honest thoughts when they ask for his opinion. Peter has gained strength from his change.

Another technique that Williamson uses in the play is dramatic irony. Williamson uses a number of instances of dramatic irony throughout the play. These include Peter being able to help other people but not being able to help himself from severe money troubles. Also the married couples are not friends but the non-married people are, such as Peter, Penny, and Margaret. But later in the play, Peter is strong and his friends help him with his money troubles (however only to make themselves look good) and he wins in the end.

Write your Everything and everyone changes research paper

Dramatic irony also brings change to Peter. Honesty brought change to Peter's and his friend's lives. Peter had his money troubles but didn't want to go to his friends for help, like his friends go to him for help. Margaret ends up telling their friends and they give the money to him, only because Peter made them guilty by confronting them about their wealth and greed.

Williamson also uses the technique of music throughout his play to set the scene and create the mood. It also reinforces the main idea of the scene. An example of this is the use of Chicago's It's hard to say Im sorry when Alex and Vicki are apologising to Peter. This technique helps the reader to understand the scene and how the character would be feeling. It also helps Williamson to strengthen his message about friendships.

Peter's change also brought change to his friends. An example of this is Conrad and his attitude towards Justin. At first Conrad had nothing to do with Justin, then established a relationship and friendship with him and paid for his university. This happened because Peter told Conrad how he really felt about his relationship with his son. Another example is Alex and Vicki. Peter being honest to them ended up helping their marriage, even though they were upset and angry with him first. They were more honest with each other, and also changed their ideas about themselves as parents. This happened because Peter told each of them how he felt about their relationship. All of these examples show how Peter's change brought change to his friends.

In conclusion, Peter's change in personality because of his decision to be honest has changed himself as a person and has also changed his friend's lives. David Williamson used many techniques in his play to show this change through, the narrator, dramatic irony, and music. Peter was then able to be more open with his thoughts and confident with his actions. His friends changed because of his honesty.

A Product of Society?

It is hard to determine whether or not Shakespearean comedy is clearly a product

of Elizabethan courtly society. It can be said that the answer to that question is both yes

and no. It is apparent in The Merchant of Venice that Shakespeare's writing was strongly influenced by the society surrounding him, while A Midsummer Nights Dream is much less realistic and so original that one might think Shakespeare came from another time period all together.

In The Merchant of Venice there are countless examples of how Shakespeare's works were a product of society. One of the main similarities is religion. The official established state religion in Shakespeare's time was the Church of England, lucidly Protestant. Everyone was required to attend an Anglican Service once a month. The Anglican service is also called Prayer Service, Prayer Book Service, Common Prayer, or the Lord's Supper. Although it was not expressly illegal to be of a different religion, it was not exactly legal to practice the faith of ones choice. There were even fines for not conforming to the sanctioned religion; that is, for not going to Protestant services. Jewish people were quite rare in England during the Elizabethan time period and they seemed to be looked down upon the most (although it was not considered a lot better to be a Catholic). Shakespeare probably never knew a Jewish person directly, but during his time the Queen's Jewish doctor was executed for being 'a spy'. Also, during that time it would have been considered quite normal to force someone to convert to Christianity. Shakespeare's Venice had the same mentality about Jewish people. Anti-Semitism was overwhelmingly abundant. Although Shylock was surely a respectable businessman, it did not seem out of the ordinary for Antonio to spit on him and call him a dog whenever it took his fancy. Shylock seems to be the only one who realizes the hypocrisy of the 'good Christians' and makes mention of it in his famed speech in Act III

SHYLOCK… Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions; fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge? (III.i.4-57)

Even after this long and hauntingly true speech, Shylock was given no mercy by the other characters in the play. It seems that the people of Shakespeare's time would have appreciated having an occasional Jewish person around since Jewish people were the only ones able to lend out money for profit. Even in their hatred of him, Antonio and Bassanio seem to have no problem with the idea of borrowing a huge sum of money from Shylock. Although non-Jewish people considered lending money for profit a sin, these same people readily took advantage of their 'sin' when they were in a pinch for money.

Another similarity between The Merchant of Venice and the society Shakespeare was a part of was the way life was for women. It is well known that Queen Elizabeth never wed simply in order to maintain her power. A woman could rule a country on her own, but if she were married all power would go directly into the hands of the husband as if somehow a ring on her finger made her less capable of managing things. In The Merchant of Venice Portia has all the power in Belmont and knows well that as soon as she be wed it will be given to whomever the correct-casket-picking man be. Portia does like to do things on her own, as we see from her great joy in pretending to be a lawyer in Act IV scene i. She also seems to know that she is marrying a man who needs to be taught how to be a husband and does so without his realizing. She willingly gives up her freedom (by helping Bassanio to choose the correct casket) and the rule she has over Belmont, simply because she is attracted to Bassanio. One may devise that Portia might have done this only to get rid of the bother caused by the many suitors she has to turn away on a daily basis.

Portia's suitors, in fact, are another aspect of The Merchant of Venice that shows society's influence on Shakespeare's writing. The English of the time were 'professionally paranoid' of anything foreign. The word insular might have been coined to describe them. Portia herself may well be a racist. One of the first things that the Prince of Morocco says to her is 'Mislike me not for my complexion' (II.i.1) as though he realizes that in Belmont his dark skin is not entirely, if at all approved of. Although she does not make comments about the Prince of Aragon, one can be sure that Portia does not want a Spanish husband either. She is decidedly set on Bassanio who is, of course, the same nationality, faith, and race as her.

A Midsummer Nights Dream, as the name suggests, is quite dreamy and fairy tale like. Unlike The Merchant of Venice, one is not able to find so many connections with it and Elizabethan society. Throughout the play Shakespeare seems to be reminding the reader that what is taking place is not real. Magic, the supernatural or unexplained, serves as an aid in A Midsummer Nights Dream. For example, Oberon uses a supernatural flower, he describes it's magical function to Puck, saying that the juice of it on sleeping eyelids will make them love the next creature they see. With the flower in Titania's eyes she falls for a literal ass and when she realizes what she has done, Oberon inadvertently wins her favor. Even though Oberon himself is one of the many magical characters in the play, he believes he needs what one could call 'Cupid's flower' to aid him. Titania's 'good turn' would not have happened at all if not for the love-stained flower and one can be quite sure Shakespeare never witnessed that in his society. Oberon's interference with whom Titania falls in love with at first sight is humorous because Oberon chooses a mortal, but transforms his features to make her 'first sight' a comical, but intended error. Titania's mixing with a mere mortal in the form of an ass is something that can be compared to a mixed racial relationship that would not have taken place in Elizabethan society.

Oberon's prying does not stop with Titania; his concern for Helena and Demetrius is worsened by a mistake made by Puck. Puck puts the juice on the wrong people. Originally Demetrius and Lysander love Hermia, but since Puck puts the flower juice on Demetrius and Lysander, Helena is the one favored by both men. Oberon's meddling seems to cause more problems than solutions, but with Puck's help, they correct it. Thanks to the fairy intervention, all in Shakespeare's play are happy and finally content with their partner. Overall, one might say without magic's existence in the play, A Midsummer Nights Dream might have been a nightmare.

As can be seen from The Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Nights Dream, William Shakespeare was both a man of his Elizabethan society and an incredibly talented playwright. One thing is certain; he will never just be seen as a product of his time or society, there is much more to his writing than that. He, in a way, defines his time.

Remember man from dust you come and to dust you shall return. This is a central idea of Bruce Dawe's work; no matter mow many materialistic items we acquire and consume, we all end up in the same place. Dawe's poems are a recollection on the world and issues around him. His aim was to depict the social problems concerning the common Australian suburban resident. This is evident through his mocking approach to these issues.

Bruce Dawe's work, Enter without so much as knocking and Americanized are poems that are critical of consumerism in the modern world. Enter without so much as knocking is a story of one man's life from birth until after death, and is a highly satirical look at modern society and its materialism. Similarly, Americanized is written in a predominantly bitter and ironic tone.

However it is not only found in poetry and the eyes of an antagonistic old man, that, we notice consumerism in our own society. If we take a look at advertisements and television what better way to get into the public's mind that right in their own homes, when they are their most vulnerable?

While questioning television lets take a look at music, for instance we drive along every day singing happily to our favourite tunes, but what really is the message being sent by such inconspicuous mediums?

Do my essay on Bruce Dawe, mentos, incubus; how is consumerism affecting our world? CHEAP !

Dawe sarcastically attacks the way in which people have been manipulated by the appeal of consumerism. He tries to warn us of the fact that we have abandoned our ethics and values in search of a more fulfilled and enriched life, which is manifested by an obsession with consumer products.

But once more he considers the influence of consumerism on our ideas of what are acceptable attitudes.

These attitudes are imposed by the constant bombardment of "things can be better, u must strive harder, use this and you will feel swell" take a look at the Mentos add for example, "….with Mentos, fresh and full of life" id like to ask you how long will it be till we start to make up acronyms for phrases like "fresh and full of life"

I can see it now, as I'm sure Dawe can, "Mentos, FAFOL" or once more" I'm feeling FAFOL now Ive had my Mentos, how about u?" but we cant forget the smug look in the actors faces it wouldn't be the same without that cheesy grin we all know so well.

What Dawe is afraid of is that one day, at this rate, maybe those cheesy faces wont seem so cheesy anymore,

maybe one day, people really will feel fresh and full of life, just from sucking on a bit of sugar and mint. Maybe one-day people will rely on this to feel fresh and full of life, instead of the feeling when we are totally breathtaken on a beautiful day. One of those days where u walk out side and think for a moment you're in heaven. Maybe one-day people will not even recognise this as being lively.

Dawe's warning is clearly presented by his depiction of characters whom have been corrupted by money and the items and gratification that it brings us, in a society that thrives on money and uses it, as a very important and powerful weapon in the struggle for survival.

In Americanized, Dawe uses a parody of Renee Descartes quote " I think therefor I am." Instead Dawe says "I think young, think big, therefor I am." This is supposed to be the philosophy off consumerism. This is that producers of consumer items encourage people to be "big spenders" on things they really do not need.

Its no surprise that Dawe is alarmed about the present situation, it is all around us. Even in such inconspicuous mediums like music. A popular band named Incubus is also concerned with consumerism. Take a look at their song Miss Bliss, it includes lines such as

Ive seen a place not far away.

Where people are individuals.

And every car has a phone.

Or

Ive got a new Rolls so why cant I take you home?

Your dubbed insane when you try to speak your mind, in your own way.

And the one that really got me

I suggest we learn to love our selves before it's made illegal.

What lengths will we go to for this manifestation of a perfect world?

So perhaps if more music with lyrics that say something instead of "but what's a girl to do When shes stopped thinking of you?" wow poor me. Blah blah blah. I'm sure you'd agree with me that these days a lot of the chart topping music is coming from pre pubescent, money hungry, self absorbed, hedonists that cant see a day past tomorrow when they will buy their new Yves Saint Laurent nail polish.

Perhaps if we discard these superficial icons we will not need to study poetry like that of Bruce Dawe's work. Because it will be obsolete

Bruce Dawe's, Americanized paints two different descriptions of society, the first, on a superficial level, and the second, on a metaphorical level. The first discussing the debatabley unloving relationship between a mother and her son and her power over him and his outlooks on life at such a young age.

The second, on a metaphorical level, Dawe expresses his fear of the situation between America, acting as a superpower and/or mother, and Australia as a vulnerable minority and only child in the eyes of it's patron saint.

Enter without so much as knocking jumps straight into the metaphorical society, which Dawe is afraid our own is turning into. A society where families are described by using marketing slogans; " one economy sized mum, one Anthony Squires Coolstream Summerweight dad, along with two other kids straight off the junior department rack."

Every aspect of the family is described in a sexist, impersonal, monotonous manner. With this in mind we realise that it is this mundane attitude that Dawe is afraid our society is turning into. It is this that he is trying to communicate to the youth of our society before its too late.

Before we are over ridden with greed and mass-conformity showing us how we can become selfish and materialistic and how we can become so involved in something that we no longer recognise the beauties of life and nature.

It deals with issues such as the cycle of life, mass production and lack of uniqueness. It shows how consumerism has a negative influence on society. His purpose for writing this poem was to challenge the cycle he observed and to show us through only a few moments in a person's life, the extreme of this problem.

Dawe's poetry is not for entertainment but to inform and educate us on the growing problem, where we are told the limits of the human body become indistinct blurred by cosmetic, narcotics, disease, and brutality, not to mention of lines like "things can be better, u must strive harder, use this and you will feel swell" constantly in our faces.

He wants to open the public's' eyes to the mishaps of society. Dawe sarcastically attacks the way in which people have been manipulated by the appeal of consumerism. He tries to warn us of the fact that we have abandoned our ethics and values in search of a more fulfilled and enriched life, which is manifested by an obsession with consumer products.

Describe an important idea dealt with in the text. Why is this idea important?

FATE

An important idea dealt with in Baz Luhrmann's production of 'Romeo and Juliet' is that of fate. Fate is what is destined to happen and no one can change these predetermined events. Fate is a very important idea dealt with in 'Romeo and Juliet' because the film begins with the viewers being told of events that are to happen and this recurs often throughout the film. The tragedy of 'Romeo and Juliet' is that the viewers watch fate unfold, yet the viewers and the characters are powerless to change these predetermined events.

Cheap Custom Essays on An important idea dealt with in Baz Luhrmann's production of 'Romeo and Juliet' is that of fate

Fate is introduced in the very beginning of the film. Viewers are told in the very beginning of the film what is going to happen at the very end,

"From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life".

Even though the ending is known, we do not know how all the events lead to it. Throughout the film, it seems that fate can be changed, and turn a different way, away from the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. An example of this is when Romeo tries to make peace with Tybalt,

"And so, good Capulet which name I tender as dearly as mine own be satisfied."

Romeo shows his good will by extending his hand. Tybalt could go either way and shake Romeo's hand, and make peace. However, as Romeo and Juliet are 'star-crossed lovers', fate intervenes and Tybalt denies Romeo's request. This type of choice is also evident before Romeo meets Juliet.

As we already know what is going to happen in the film, the events are predetermined and cannot be changed, although they appear that they can be at times. Fate seems to be working against Romeo and Juliet. Romeo appears to know that something bad will begin the night that he goes to the party at the Capulet mansion.

"I fear too early. For my mind misgives some consequence, yet hanging in the stars, shall bitterly begin his fearful date…by some vile forfeit of untimely death."

However, Romeo believes that he has no control over the events,

"But he that hath the steerage of my course, direct my sail!"

This idea also recurs in the film when the priest helps Juliet to appear dead. The priest intends to send a letter to Romeo to inform him that Juliet is not really dead. However, the letter fails to reach Romeo and his friend, who has seen Juliet 'dead', informs Romeo that she is 'dead'. This shows, that it is fate that Romeo was not meant to receive the letter.

It seems that only because of Romeo and Juliet's suicide that the Montague and Capulet family feud comes to an end. It is only because Romeo is not properly informed of Juliet's plan that he goes to see Juliet in the cathedral, and takes poison by her side, just as she wakes up. It seems that some higher power always intended that Romeo and Juliet should die, so that the family feud would end.

"See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love!"

Fate is perhaps one of the most important ideas dealt with in Baz Lurhmann's production of 'Romeo and Juliet' as it recurs often throughout the film. This idea is important as it ads tension to the film for the viewers, as you know what will happen but not how it will happen. It was fate that the family feud could only end with the deaths of a member of each family, who were so in love, they felt they could not live without one another.

For anyone who watched television during the Super Bowl know that it is the most watched program, all year, in the country. People also know that to put a commercial on television costs a lot of money. I think that there should be a few exceptions to those commercials that are not always on to advertise products. Some of the commercials promote things that people are sometimes scared to talk about and being the most watched program in the country this is where your discretion comes in.

Being the executives of the National Football League, there is a program that I think should be aired for the public's safety. The program that I think should be paid for by the National Football League is an anti-abuse commercial. We all know that this is a major problem in our country today. This is the time that men, but more importantly women and children watch and do not take their eyes off the screen. The women and children being the ones that are abused the most need some motivation or incentive to come forward and stop this horrible act and those who incur it.

Now, I have been to a few women's shelter around my town. I have seen what people can do to them and more importantly the children that come with them. If you

Easton

walked in there and saw the bruises and the scars on these people I think that you would want to put a stop to it. I also know that there are many people out there that have not come forward. The reasons that they do come forward are that they feel that it is their fault that they got hit or because they are to scared. This commercial should put something in their mind to come forward.

In conclusion, we all know that this is a problem that is facing the world and needs to be stopped. I know as well as you do that the National Football League is not low on money and it could help people to air this thirty-second commercial. As a plus for airing it could also be a tax write off when that great time comes around. So please help the cause and those who need it by putting this ad on television during this year's Super Bowl.
