William Butler Yeats and Thomas Stearns Eliot both have written very powerful poetry that has changed the face of literature for future generations. Yeats' "The Second Coming" and Eliot's "The Hollow Men" are permeated with the feeling of despair. This despair reflects the feelings of the age in which the poets lived. In these poems, there is a pervasive sense of futility, a sense that mankind will never recover. Through the use of tone, visual imagery, and religious images, W.B. Yeats and T.S. Eliot paint a verbal portrait of life that is both desolate and apocalyptic.

Both poets use apocalyptic images to express tone. The first stanza of Yeats' "The Second Coming" is a statement about the state of the world. The tone is set in the following lines "Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; / Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world" (Yeats, lines -4). This tone reflects the seriousness of the situation. The "widening gyre" (Yeats 1) image shows society moving away from the centre of civilization, just as the planets would scatter into the universe if it were not for the sun's gravity. In response to the loss of "the centre" (Yeats ) mankind is thrown into confusion. The state of mind of the people is recounted as "The best lack all conviction, while the worst / Are full of passionate intensity." (Yeats 7-8). These lines express the reaction to chaos, in particular, the reaction to the times in which the poems were written. Similarly, Eliot uses images of emptiness in "The Hollow Men". The line that opens the poem, "Mistah Kurtz--he dead. / A penny for the Old Guy" is an epigraph Eliot employs to set the tone and mood. The lines refer to people who are considered evil and to dark moments of humanity. In lines one and two, Eliot presents the reader with a metaphorical image of the speaker. "We are the hollow men / We are the stuffed men" characterizes the speaker as a scarecrow, someone who is hollow and empty.

One of the most prevalent, visual images common to both the poem by Eliot and the poem by Yeats is the desert. The desert in both of these poems is not just an arid, barren, wasteland; it is a visual way to understand the bleakness of life; "…somewhere in sands of the desert / A shape with lion body and the head of a man, /A gaze as blank and pitiless as the sun" (Yeats 1-15). Eliot imparts the same visual idea "This is the dead land /This is the cactus land" (-40). The desert images in both poems reflect an aridity of the soul that results in a loss of faith and hope. In the previous passages, both Eliot and Yeats refer to pagan images when describing the desert. Eliot writes "Here the stone images / Are raised, here they receive / The supplication of a dead man's hand" (41-4) and in "The Second Coming" Yeats writes about "[a] shape with lion body and the head of man" (1-14). The speakers in the poems are expressing the idea that their lives are so terrible, that faith and hope are being offered to stone idols. The worship of false images is considered sacrilegious.

In "The Second Coming", there is a sense of despondency. The speaker feels that the situation is irreversible and out of humankind's control as evidenced in the line "The blood-dimmed tide is loosed…" (Yeats 5). The speaker also expresses a belief that whatever may come next, cannot be any better then what they have now "And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, / Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?" (Yeats 1-). These lines describe the loss of faith in humanity and the belief that Christianity has disappeared. .

In "The Hollow Men", there is also evidence of a dying faith in Christianity. "In this valley of dying stars / In this hollow valley" (Eliot 54-55), the speakers no longer feel the love of God. The stars, to which the hollow men looked to for spiritual guidance, are fading. God has abandoned the hollow men and they cannot hear his word "This broken jaw of our lost kingdom" (Eliot 56). The "broken jaw" (Eliot 56) represents the lack of communication between God and the speaker. This idea is also revealed in the lines, "The supplication of a dead man's hand / Under the twinkle of a fading star." (Eliot 4-44) This pleading, this supplication is to a God no longer believed in. It is "The hope only / Of empty men." (Eliot 66-67)

In "the Hollow Men", it is as if the subjects understand their situation, but wish it were not so. As they cling together, silent, in their despair, there is an understanding of the hell that they are in

Between the idea

And the reality

Between the motion

And the act

Falls the shadow (Eliot, lines 7-76)

These lines are also suggestive of the contemplation of suicide. The feeling that maybe it would be better to be dead than to suffer any longer. The wavering between believing in God and the despair that they are feeling is evident. The lines "For Thine is the Kingdom" (Eliot 77) and "Life is very long" (Eliot 81), verbalize the internal struggle the hollow men are going through. The speaker's struggle is that in spite of the terror he feels about living a long life without hope, he still wants to believe that God exists. The short lines, "For Thine is / Life is / For Thine is" (Eliot -4), indicate the unwillingness of the hollow men to put their fears into words. The poem ends much the same as their lives "Not with a bang but a whimper." (Eliot 6). This line indicates that in spite of the hope, everything is futile. Life goes on whether you want it to or not; and sometimes so does death.

Yeats and Eliot, through their clever use of words, both have presented the reader with a realistic picture of how people felt after the turn of the century. Sufficient evidence is present in the poetry to support the idea, that the images brought to mind when reading "The Second Coming" and "The Hollow Men", are ones of despair and the loss of faith that people were feeling.

Mount St Helens, a Dormant Volcano in south western Washington erupted on the morning of May 18th, 180 and volcanologists have predicted that it may continue to be active for sometime yet.

There have been 1 casualties reported so far and the Washington State Department of Game estimated nearly 7,000 big game animals (deer, elk, and bear) died as well as all birds and nearly all small mammals. Many burrowing rodents, frogs, salamanders, and crawfish, managed to survive because they were below ground level or water surface when the tragedy struck. SO far 1 billion board feet of timber (enough to build about 80,000 two-bedroom homes) has been destroyed by the lava and ash flowing down the mountain.

Volcanologists reported that the eruption has triggered a magnitude 5.1 earthquake about 1 mile beneath the volcano and even though there have been hundreds of earthquakes at the mountain since march 0th, the unstable north face could not sustain another and the largest landslide in history has removed more than 1,00 feet from the summit and swept away almost the entire north side of the mountain.

This is the first volcanic eruption in the conterminous United States since 114 and the height of the volcano has been reduced from ,677 feet to 8,6 feet, but it is still one of the tallest mountains in the Cascade Range.

Mt. St. Helens is on an ocean-continent seduction boundary (the Juan de Fuci plate is sub ducting under the N. American plate). Mt. St. Helens is an active strata volcano. The easiest answer to what caused the eruption is that a body of magma moved into the shallow part of the volcano between the first earthquakes and minor eruptions in March, and by May 18th had become so pressurized that the north face of the mountain failed and this magma was able to erupt.

A lack of authoritative evidence of adverse health effects in humans, yet abundant suggestive evidence associating these chemicals with problems in animals, has provided for a volatile debate. The mounting of scientific evidence on hormone mimics spurred the government to pass legislation requiring that all pesticides be screened for estrogenic hormones according to Goldfarb. Detection of estrogenic hormones are also being implemented in drinking water. The World Resources Institute reports that at least 45 chemical compounds have been proposed to be endocrine disruptors. Many are long-lived organic compounds that can persist in the environment for decades and bioaccumulate in body tissue. The list, as stated by the WRI, includes certain herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides (e.g., atrazine and chlordane); industrial chemicals and byproducts such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxin; and a number of compounds found in plastics, such as phthalates and styrenes, that are used to package foods and beverages.

Hormone mimics are "…such persistent chemicals concentrate in the tissue and accumulate exponentially as they move from animal to animal up the food chain. Through this process of magnification, the concentration of a persistent chemical that resists breakdown and accumulates in body fat can be 5 million times greater in the top predator such as a herring gull than in the surrounding water," according to Colborn et. al. Hormone mimics, even in small doses, may prove a threat to humans with the process of magnification. The mimics also pose a threat to persons who are potentially overweight. Recent studies are trying to link the hormone mimics that are stored in body fat to a cause for cancer. Derailed development has been exhibited with the gulls exhibiting strange behavior such as same sex nests and still other species exhibit visual birth defects.

Custom Essays on do environmental hormone mimics pose a potentially serious health threat?

Endocrine disruptors possibly disrupt the proper development of the human fetus. Quite possibly, say researchers at the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They reported last November that hypospadias, a birth defect in males in which the urinary opening is mislocated--on the underside of the penis or even on the scrotum--doubled between 168 and 1, and now afflicts nearly 1 of 100 newborn boys nationwide. That makes it the most common specific type of birth defect among males, says lead researcher Len Paulozzi.

The defect is thought to result from an inadequate surge of the male hormone testosterone between and 1 weeks after conception. As you block the fetuss own testosterone, the fetus cannot masculinize itself, Paulozzi explains, and you wind up getting these various states of feminization of the fetus, of which hypospadias is a mild form. Suspected causes include a fungicide and DDE, a breakdown product of DDT. Also possible, Paulozzi says, is that doctors have simply become better trained at recognizing and reporting less severe forms of the defect. Hormone levels that are typically found in the environment are hurting the vital hormone communication. Hormone messengers are critical aspects of development from sexual differentiation of an organism to brain organization. The relatively low levels of hormones found in an individual organism can be harmless, but if any offspring to that individual is affected by the hormone mimics.

Duumvir, Citizen, Defendant, Priest and Philosopher are a few names that Apuleius Madaurensis wears during his lifetime. Apuleius encounters both ends of the wealth during Roman times. His experience of the broad spectrum of Roman life did not stop with only wealth but Apuleius also travels to and from provinces of Rome, Rome itself, Egypt, Carthage, and even Greece. These ordeals established Apuleius as a distinguished rhetorician, remarkable scholar, great novelist, spiritual figure, and above all a man that fit the Roman virtues and other Roman practices to an almost perfect point. Apuleius Madaurensis fits very well into his Roman society due to his wealthy upbringing, his extensive travels, and his defense speech that he delivered in his Apologia.

In the early part of the second century CE in Roman North Africa Apuleius first learned learned how to become a proper Roman citizen during his youth.  He was a native of Madaura, an inland town, though he thought of himself as half Numidian and half Getulian because Madaura lay on the borders of those two kingdoms. His father is thought to have been called Theseus and his mother named Salvia.  Additionally his mother was from the Thessalian family which descended from the famous Plutarch. Madaura, originally a form of the kingdom of Syphax, was given to the Romans by their friends, Masinissa. Madaura then became one of Romes North African colonies and rose to prominence under Roman control.

Apuleius learned the Roman virtues from his father who held the office of duumvir, the highest magisterial position in Madaura. However, after his father's death, Apuleius rose to duumvir himself, and inherited part of the sum of nearly two million sesterces his father

bequeathed to his two sons. After receiving his inheritance he also managed to spend so much of

his vast inheritance that he had to sell his clothes in order to defray the costs of his initiation into the mystery cults of Isis and Osiris. After joining these two cults Apuleius utilizing his Roman ideals, began his trek towards a Roman education and his fame (http//www.cog.jhu.edu/~slade/apuleius.html).

Next Apuleius initiated his education at Carthage a well known school of the arts, that had adopted a Platonic system of philosophy. Apuleius subsequently thereafter perfected his studies in the arts in Athens and then journeyed throughout Italy, Asia, and Greece. After a travel to the Olympic Games he was believed to of run short on money and was compelled to use his wits for his own survival. Thereafter, he returned to Africa and then set forth towards the great libraries of Alexandria (http//ccat.sas.upenn.edu/jod/apuleius/).

Apuleius's affluent upbringing and his journeys throughout the known world shaped him into the man that wrote over 0 works of which only six have survived. He was beginning to be considered a great Platonic philosopher and a great member of Roman society. None of the doctrines that Apuleius followed placed his actions outside the realm of the accepted Roman norms at the time of his life in the early part of the second century CE.

Finally, the greatest reason that Apuleius fit into Roman culture was his successful defense while on trial for black magic. Apuleius was put on trial originally because he became sick on his way to Alexandria while at the seaport Oa. Sicinius Pontianus, who was a young friend of Apuleius from the college in Athens, invited Apuleius to become the guest of his rich widowed mother. Pudentilla was burdened with a chronic malady, that the doctors proscribed marriage as a proper treatment. Pontianus then decided that he should be the one to choose who is a suitable man to marry his mother. Apuleius was the man whom Pontianus cajoled to wed Padentilla. Eventually Apuleius agreed to marry this very wealthy woman because he had lost

most of his inheritance during his travels, schooling or through gifts to his teachers and friends. He is believed to of grown some fondness for her however.

After his marriage to Pudentilla, the virtuous Roman Apuleius was placed under arrest. The actual charge Apuleius was arrested under was not immediately clear. Apuleius then forced his accusers to bring about a charge and name the person accusing him of doing this action. They formally brought a charge of magic under the name of Apuleius newly formed stepson Sicinius Pudens.

The original argument between Apuleius and his foes, however seems to have been solely centered around the problems of Apuleius's money and social status, rather than him actually performing magic. There was obviously no written law against the marriage to a strange older woman thus the prosecution unavoidably had to envision some formal charge on which a legal case against Apuleius could be made. Unfortunately, things developed in quite a different fashion than the accusers envisioned, Apuleius was an extremely qualified, talented speaker, who was well acquainted with Roman law. This enabled him to deny these allegations and switch their indecisiveness to his own prerogative. Apuleiusused this event to raise his reputation as an amazing orator and a tremendous philosopher.

Throughout the case Apuleius calls upon countless forms of his culture, and uses them to gain his acquittal. His trial is an example of the fact that Apuleius was a great member of Roman society. Apuleius' own friend and stepson couldn't find anything wrong with his conduct that could be used as evidence to persecute him. Therefore he had to fabricate a story. Upon completion of Apuleius' reprieve, he secured his very own place as a leader in the example of how a Roman citizen should carry out his everyday life .

In conclusion Apuleius Madaurensis tailors very well into Roman society because of his

opulent childhood, his expansive travels, and defense speech from his very own trial. In both his

childhood and in his later years, Apuleius remains true to the Roman way of life and shows values of Roman and modern day culture. Recent events also suggest that these parallels still exist as unjustly accused people are criticized for living their lives according to their culture. When unjustly accused people are prosecuted, Apuleius should come to mind to show the world that if one man can escape unfair accusations.

Changes I saw in Bombay within the last 15 years

I visited my parent's hometown Bombay after a gap of at least 1 years. Wherever I went there were surprises stored for me. I would look around rubbing my eyes in amazement, I was debating to myself if it was the same place I visited 1 years ago. I had come from America and it did seem like it was going be just like it.

I remember my dad showing me his old school where he had studied. I was still there, but they made a bigger building out of it with a lush green park to its front and back. There were more hospitals and post-offices for people's convenience. Poor localities now had electricity. Roads were brighter than ever with more street lighting. More parks were constructed for civilians. More public schools were started, the government had primary education was made compulsory for all children despite of their social status. However there is still a lot of people from the below average income who have illegally employed their children. This is no good because the kids are underpaid and treated badly. In order, to provide all children with primary education the government should provide the lower class with some sort of a financial support. This will force all parents to send their children to school and improve the literacy rate. It was nice to see the population under strict control. People have started to have smaller families now. Bombay has now started to have malls just like America. People seem to be crazy about famous American brand names like Tommy Hillfiger, guess, Kenneth Cole etc. men and women are now treated equally. Almost ten years ago a son's education was more important than a daughter. Girls were not sent to school. A good example of the situation follows. An old neighbor of my dads had a financial problem and had to pick between his 8 year old daughter and 14 year old son going to school. Of course, he picked his sons education. Other than the financial problem he said his daughter would get married and have to take care of the house. It was no point "wasting" money on her. Now she is married and a mother of two kids. She has joined a local adult school to complete her education. Now, men and women, husband and wife, daughter and son are walking shoulder to shoulder in every field of live. The living standards are higher then ever. There is a lot of upscale restaurants, night clubs, hotels, fast food places like McDonalds, burger king etc. some young entrepreneurs are also trying to introduce true American concepts like starbucks and jamba juice.

It was nice to see the city progress. But I was somehow seeing the Indian culture diminishing in the youth. India thought its children to respect their parents, take care of them when they are old, and women dressed in proper attire. However, I saw all sorts of children out of which most don't respect their parents, young girls in improper attire. They seem to dress more like hooch's around town. I also revisited the famous juhu beach. I was very disappointed to see no changes were being made to its betterment. It was overcrowded as before. Once again, I saw a little boy who got lost and was crying. It reminds me of Sabrina. There was no sort of security which would patrol around watching for lost children or parents to ask anybody if their kids were missing. The crime rate had increased. There are still a lot of people who are living in filthy conditions. This is a human disease in Bombay. People are just not contented with what they already have. I think the key cause of our happiness in America is that we are satisfied with what we have. Our stable government plays a very important role in this. There was fewer tress. They were replaced with buildings or shopping malls. Bombay has changed which is good, but life seems to be like someone has press fast forward.Help with essay on changes i saw in a town

Tom Stoppard has transformed Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, (here on in, written as RAGAD) from Hamlet written by Shakespeare. Both Stoppard and Shakespeare have created and presented values and themes related to their times and have been influenced by the social, cultural and historical contexts. The change of perspectives on the themes of death, fate and destiny, appearances versus reality and the use of tragedy and comedy is every present within the transformation of the two plays. Stoppard has transformed his entire play from Hamlet, by altering the focus from the Prince of Denmark to the destiny of two ordinary people.

A major transformation within Stoppard's RAGAD is the concept of death. In Hamlet, death was portrayed in a very dramatic theatrical style, involving violence, blood, poisoning and duels. Hamlet also contemplates suicides and human mortality in a very deep and complex manner. Yet Stoppard has transformed death, to be almost amusing and casual in a number of ways as he imagines himself alive in a box, which is a contradiction in itself, creating humour. Ros then concludes, "Life in a box is better than caught alive in a box, becomes a metaphor for Ros and Guildenstern's (here on in, written as Guil) life, as they are trapped on the stage and have no control. But Guil has a very different and blatant perception of death; "it's not gasps and blood and falling about…it's just a man failing to reappear, that's all- now you see him, now you don't." Stoppard has transformed the concept of death from Hamlet, as something dramatic and sensational, to everyday and causal. This transformation is due to change in context. During Elizabethan times, death within a tragedy was expected and very dramatic, yet during the 160's death was accept and was no longer acknowledged in the same light. Society had already gone through two worlds wars and experienced a major loss of life and has become somewhat desensitised

When a person looks into a mirror, what do they see? Do they see themselves as they really are, or do they see themselves in ways, which are distorted through their eyes, whether good or bad? When you look at yourself, in a mirror, in a photo, or maybe even video footage, you will not see yourself the way that the next person does, but it is a sad fact that a majority of people, see themselves in a negative light. Scrutinising every curve, every freckle, every small bump of cellulite upon their bodies. The way that people view themselves can depend on many factors. Their everyday environment, their current attitude, the people they associate with, the beliefs they have grown up with, and also the media. This report aims to look at the different types of media that effect womens body image, the effects that these types of media have and also what is being done about the situation.

In today's society, we are surrounded by the media. From the suggestive slogans on our soft drink labels in our refrigerators, to the billboards situated on our main roadways, the media is everywhere. Television, movies, magazines, fashion, music, they are all a part of the media force, which drives our world today. It's no wonder that the media is so influential to the people who live in this world.

One figure which is constant in every form of media, is the woman. Not just any woman, but a woman who possesses a "perfect" body. She has a tiny waist, slender legs, flawless skin, perfectly sized and placed eyes, lips and nose, and dressed in the latest fashion, or next to nothing at all. Her hair is soft, shiny, and she smells like roses. She eats McDonalds, KFC, Hungry Jacks, whole tubs of ice cream, and does not gain a kilo. Does anybody really know this woman?

The level of perfection, which the media portrays "normal" women to possess, is not humanly possible. At least not without 5 make up artists on side, a computer expert to touch up the "bad bits", and a metabolism that works overtime. Yet, this is how the media portrays real women to be.

Buy custom The Negative Effect of Media on Women's Body Image term paper

One product, which is very hypocritical about womens body image, is magazines. Magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, Cleo, even Girlfriend and Dolly, claim to be aimed at real women, but how can this be true when size 4 to 6 models are parading through their fashion spreads? When in actual fact, the average Australian woman is a size 1. A fact that a recent national survey discovered. The percentage of Australian women a Size 1 and over is 75%, whereas women Size 10 and under were only 1%. This statistic shows that 75% of Australias women are not properly represented in the media. It does not help the female reader's mind, when the magazine scrutinises Christina Aguilera's recent weight gain, and how she has "packed on the pounds."

One magazine, which has begun to tackle this issue in the last few years, is Cosmopolitan. With women's body image in the media having had the spotlight on it recently, Cosmopolitan has addressed this issue, both in it's own magazine and also on the Channel Nine program, Today. In both the magazine and television program, Cosmo's editor Mia Freedman, explained that Cosmopolitan does it's best to include women of all shapes and sizes, but that it's impossible to include every body shape in every issue of the magazine. She also makes a point that Cosmopolitan's philosophy is "Sexy comes in all shapes and sizes," [Cosmopolitan, April Issue, 00], but points out that Cosmopolitan promotes healthy bodies and healthy relationships with our bodies.

Indeed, Cosmopolitan is doing a great job in the eyes of Australian women, with Cosmo being one of the highest selling women's magazines in Australia. One of their most featured models, who also happens to be a "plus-size" model is Natalie Wakeling, who has graced the pages of Cosmopolitan a numerous amount of times with her beauty and her normal body. She too also struggled with her own body image in her teenage years, retelling that It was killing me to maintain even a size 10 weight, but it seems she has dealt with her body image in a positive. Cosmo also includes a lot of articles to do with loving your body for what it is, not what it could, should or would be, it has also featured role models such as Kelly Osbourne and Sara-Marie [from Big Brother] on the front cover of it's magazine, which is a huge step from the Sarah Michelle Gellar types, who usually grace the covers at the magazine stands.

Not only are women scrutinised for being overweight, but underweight also. Some women are just not born to carry much weight on their bodies. Being any body shape can contribute to a whole range of factors, such a genes, metabolism, lifestyle, etc. For a woman to have to explain herself when someone calls her anorexic should not be tolerated. This is what model Jodie Kidd experienced in her teenage years. By her mid teens, she was gracing the runways in Italy, and though she had the model body, which was expected of her, the media called her An anorexic giraffe. The media, who normally embrace models, turned on one of their own products, and criticised her for being too skinny. The pressure became so intense and so horrible for Jodie that she quit modelling. The type of women usually associated with having bodies so small, are celebrities and models, and everybody has heard the horror stories of anorexia and bulimia associated with both.

The media does have a negative effect on womens body image. If the very force which created this problem [the media] is turning on itself, that shows how bad the issue has become, and now the media themselves are beginning to open their eyes. Todays generation, as the most media driven of all generations so far, are pumped with media left, right and centre. It is our world. In national surveys and general public opinion, many women agree that the media contributes greatly to women of all sizes harming their bodies.

Unlike the trends and celebrities, which come and go, the media and the way that it works will not be so easy to change in the future. They will continue to try and sell everything to the best of their ability, whether the ways are appropriate or not. However, Cosmopolitan has really started the ball rolling, as I included in my research, by including models who represent real women in their magazines, excluding diets from their magazines, and publishing articles to encourage women to love their bodies for what they are. If more magazines start to follow this trend, in future, media may be more representative of real women and their bodies.

Please note that this sample paper on The Negative Effect of Media on Women's Body Image is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. There are rich coloured epithets, metaphoras, repetitions, Repetition gives a sense of increasing emotional atmosphere.

Somerset Maugham also uses some kinds of irony, describing the sufferings of a woman, who is really healthy, but trying to seem poor and weak. We also can find some similes (a type of comparison). Maugham`s prose is full of different stylistic devices. He is a real genius of literature (i mean english literature). I liked his story very much and i can advise everyone to read it. English literature has a lot of great writers and most of them are really talented and famous. Jo course, nowdays literature is not so amazing as the literature of past. But there will be many new talented writers, i suppose. Literature helps us to develop critical attitude to life, to develop thinking and describing the reality we live in. We should read different literature to become more clever and intelligent. We should get our children used to reading and thinking. More you read more you know and reflect. This is my own opinion. And also we must be able to analyse what we read because reading without thinking has no use. It doesn`t really matter what you read. Novels or scientific literature - you must think about it. Reading is very useful for your general education and increasing your educational level. I`m already tired of this terrible typing and wasting my time and money for this web site. I just wanted to get needful information from this web site and now i have to type, to type, to type, to type, to type, to type, to type. typing seems to me already an endless word. I begin to hate it. But i still type, type, type, type, type, type... What a terrible fate! What for? I don`t deserve such a cruel fate. But what am i saying? I just still write, type, type, type. I write this word again and again in hope of the end to be soon. May be now? I`ll try to register...

Vietnam and the limits of Power

The main objective behind the United States involvement in Vietnam was to contain the spread of communism in Southeast Asia. It was in the 150s when the United States began to send troops to Vietnam, during the following 5-year period, the ensuing war would create some of the strongest tensions in US history. Almost million US men and women were sent thousands of miles to fight for what was a questionable cause.

The Vietnam War created great controversy in the United States. The burning of draft cards, protests, and riots were all effects of Vietnam. In 167 General William C. Westmoreland addressed the public attempting to gain support for the war along with ensuring Americans that it would soon be over. He described the war by breaking it up into phases. Optimistically he explained phases one and two were over and the final phase was just around the corner. The General felt vast progress had already been made. He viewed the enemy as a weakening opponent that would soon be able to be overcome. Though Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara had his own view on the war in Vietnam. A year after the General addressed the public Robert McNamara drafted a secret memorandum for President Lyndon B. Johnson about the current status of the war. McNamara gradually became skeptical about whether the war could be won by deploying more troops to South Vietnam and intensifying the bombing of North Vietnam. Overall he saw no short-term possibility of winning or even ending this war. Robert McNamara description of the war and where it was going was so different from General Westmoreland because McNamara memorandum was meant just for the president so he was able to be brutally honest. The General, due to the desire of policymakers, had to convince the American public of close and victorious win.

The moral of American troops in Vietnam and the Enemy was an influential and ongoing problem all throughout the Vietnam War. Colonel Robert D. Heinl described the morale of United States Armed forces being the lowest it has ever been. He was among the soldiers in the field and encountered and witnessed the fragging, combat refusals, and dug abuse that occurred.

Buy vietnam term paper

He felt the situation was potentially disastrous and credited it in part to lack of public confidence in the war. He experienced first hand how discouraging it was to fight for such a controversial cause. Along with American morale, enemy morale was also a problem. The problem was that to many it was unable to be broken. Robert S. McNamara thought the enemy has adopted a strategy of waiting out American troops, which made there morale unbreakable.

Arthur E. Woodley served as a Special Forces ranger in Vietnam in 168 and 16. In the time that Woodley served he faced an ample amount of killing and brutality. He recalls how many fingers and toes he collected and how many Vietn'ese he pushed out of a helicopter. This is what is memorable to Arthur Woodley. Yet, he fought in Vietnam around the same time that, according to General William C. Westmoreland, Phase four should have been taking place. It seems that the experiences of Woodley are not consistent with what policymakers felt would be occurring in phase four. Westmoreland talked about the Vietnamese being modernized, infiltration slowing down, and the communist infrastructure near collapsing. This was inconsistent with the memories of Arthur Woodley and many other American in combat in Vietnam.

The types of experiences that Woodley was confronted with were the groundwork and what led to Heinl's observations. Arthur felt he became "an animal" in Vietnam. This was due to the killing and inhumanity that he witnessed everyday. These types of encounters have an influential pull on a persons emotions and morale. War life is extremely hard and demoralizing on a person. Yet, it is made even worse when the cause of your fight is uncertain and when there is an ongoing collapse of confidence from your fellow Americans at home.

Teen pregnancy is a social problem that affects the entire community. It is important to examine the root causes of this problem, and the effects this problem has on our society, the individual, and the community. Then we will be able analyze possible ways of combating this problem. The causes of teenage pregnancy is not only the fault of the individual. There are a myriad of influences and circmstances that give rise to teenage pregnancy that are found in families, the community, and social dysfunctions. The negative consequences of teenage pregnancy affects the teenagers involved, the mother, and the tax payer. Every step should be taken to battle this problem. There is no single solution to this problem. It is up to the individual, the family, and the community to take necessary measures to prevent teen pregnancy. There are many causes of teenage pregnancy on the individuals part. For one, the need to participate in high-risk behaviors such as smoking, drinking and drugs influences this social problem. Teenagers sometimes choose the wrong crowds that pressure them into engaging in sexual activity. Poor school performance or lack of future goals sometimes create an atmosphere that opens the door to sexual activity. This is because teenagers sometimes feel a sense of hopelessness and an isolation to towards the world around them. The overall poor decision-making skills, and self esteem of a teenager sometimes leads to teenage pregnancy. The family on a whole has a major influence on teenage pregnancy. Some homes lack fathers or other responsible male role models. This can affect the teenager because they might seek this kind of role model from another teen which leads to teenage pregnancy. Mothers who were themselves teen mothers may influence their children. There is often ineffective modeling and reinforcement of family values in the home. Some parents struggle with appropriate parenting skills, this leads to poor communication between them and their children. Parents are faced with the situation of not being able to talk to their children about sex or ways of preventing sex because of this. Poverty puts increasing financial pressures on families that result in more emphasis on work, thus less time is spent together as a family. Some of the community and social problems that exist can be diagnosed as the cause of teenage pregnancy. For example, single-support families without support systems open the door to teenage pregnancy. The medias influence and advertising has corrupted the minds of teenagers. There is an increase in poverty that contribute to teenage pregnancy due to low income families. There is also an inability to address sex and its related issues. Overall there is an inability to collectively agree on viable solutions to address teenage pregnancy. The effects of teen pregnancy are far-reaching. Approximately $6 billion in state and federal money is spent each year on public services for families started by teen parents. Also, teen mothers are less likely than other women to receive adequate prenatal care, which leads to low birth weight and premature births. Females cite pregnancy and parenting as a major reason for dropping out of school. (Hinckley, 18). Teen pregnancy is a controversial issue because it effects society as a whole. Teenage mothers often raise children who never learn how to live productive lifestyles. Negative elements like drug addiction and crime seem to be the only outlets that are available to lonely, confused children who live in poverty-stricken cities. For many of these children there are only the options of dead-end jobs, jail or early death. Many of these children end up having their own children at an early age; therefore perpetuating the vicious cycle of poverty, poor education, joblessness, and lack of hope for the future. Teenage girls that get pregnant become overwhelmed with the pressures of supporting their children financially while trying to instill morals and ethics in their lives. It is practically impossible for a single parent to raise kids, work a job, and pay all of the bills and utilities. The build up of all of these pressures causes enormous physical and mental stress on both the mother and child. Most teen mothers have to rely on government aid like Welfare, W.I.C, Focus Hope, project housing, and Medicaid as relief. The family, individual, and the community play a vital role in preventing teenage pregnancy and providing comprehensive solutions to the problem. Individuals must take steps to ensure that they do not become a statistic . This means dedication to good school performance, youth involvement in community and or employment, and working towards developing interpersonal skills. There are a lot of things that a family can do to ensure that their child do not become a victim of teenage pregnancy. There is an important need for responsible and positive adult role models in the home. Parents should participate in youths education, and apply appropriate and consistent discipline to their children. Parents should also talk to teens openly (girls and boys) about love, relationships, and sexuality. Parents can ask kids about their interests and what they want to accomplish, and help them see how early pregnancy could hinder those dreams. . If kids see the potential outcomes of their decisions, its more likely that they will make good decisions now. Parents can supervise their teens activities without forgetting that they are no longer kids, but rather young adults who need a certain amount of independence. Children need parents to share their values and expectations. This will give teens foundation to sustain them against the negative influences of peers and popular culture, and to place them firmly on a path to future success. The community can also work towards preventing occurences of teenage pregnacy. Communities can build the social aspect of teens by setting up parent and teen support groups. Teenagers should be taught sexual education and life skills relavent to todays world. Their is a need for school-based health centers that provide easy access to contraceptive services. The needs of impoverished families need to be addressed. It is important that there is employment and volunteer opportunities available for youth, so that they will occupy their time. Finally, businesses, churches, and other community organiations need to make a commitment to support schools and other agencies efforts in teen pregnancy prevention. Teen pregnancy has implications that reach everyone. Although there are many causes and negative consequences that result from teenage pregnancy, all is not lost. Unwanted teen pregnancies can be avoided. Like an unwanted houseguest, unwanted teen pregnancies breed resentment, ill will, and a lifetime of hurt in many cases between both the parent(s) and the children. Strong ethics, education, and communication will help stem the tide of unwanted teen pregnancies.

Aspirations

I have many hopes and dreams, one of those hopes has always been to attend college and to get a bachelors degree. I have always excelled at school and actually enjoy learning and expanding my mind. Although at this point, I do not know what direction I wish to go professionally I hope that through my college education I can develop and discover new interests that will lead me into a career that I enjoy. While it would be nice to make a lot of money, I think that it is much more important to enjoy what I do and be able to do it passionately. As for my personal life, I hopeas many girls doto find a husband that is honest, loyal and respectful. Also I have always dreamed of having a little girl or a little boy to care for. No matter how my life turns out, I plan to put my heart into all that I do and to always have a good and cheerful attitude.

Impact

Of all the people in my life, my best friend Candice has had the biggest impact on me. She has always demonstrated the qualities that I admire most. She is honest and has good integrity. She is respectful to all people and is considerate and caring. She is always willing to put others before herself and to lend a hand to those in need. She has always been there for me when I need words of encouragement or a shoulder to cry on. She has taught me the importance of friendship and has offered me an endless supply of good advice. We have gone through so much together these past few years that I cannot see any way that she could have avoided impacting my life.

It is the Bradley belief that most women with the proper education, preparation, and the help of a coach can be taught to give birth naturally. There are many reasons why the Bradley Method is unique and a superior way to having a healthy and happy delivery.

The Bradley Method is a simple method that teaches self-awareness. It teaches women how to deal with the stress and pain of delivery by tuning in to her body. The Bradley Method is unique because it teaches couples ways to keep their pregnancy and delivery low risk. It teaches that relaxation is crucial to a good delivery.

Relaxation is the safest and most efficient method to reduce pain and to handle the pain women will experience. Most other methods seek to control the ambiance of labor, while The Bradley Method encourages women to relax and to trust their bodies. Labor is a natural thing and The Bradley Method encompasses this belief.

A natural childbirth is important. Pregnancy, labor, and birth can have long term affects on children. No drug has ever been proven to be safe to a baby (Bradleybirth.com). The Bradley Method helps to give babies the best possible start in life that they can have. Marcia decided to try The Bradley Method after unsuccessfully using Lamaze with her first child. "Hee-hee hooing really didn't do the trick for me, and after fifteen hours of labor, I gave in and asked for pain medication. Had I felt better prepared and more confident, I think I could have made it." Diane Walbeck unfortunately learned the hard way that no medication is proven safe for an unborn child during labor. "I know this for a fact because my daughter had a severe reaction to the epidural I received during labor. Doctors do not tell you the risks mothers can develop seizures, the baby can have a fatal overdose, the baby will have seizures for life, brain damage, be at risk for SIDS, and reduced sucking reflex. Some studies suggest a link between medication used during labor and drug use later on in life. All doctors tell their pregnant patients to avoid cocaine and other such substances, but then offer the same family of drugs to them when they are in labor." Every mother wants the best for her child, and during delivery the best option is to use a no-drug policy.

Bradley Method classes are twelve weeks long; and they teach the mother and coach how to have the best pregnancy and delivery possible. The goals of The Bradley Method are to have natural childbirth, if circumstances allow, to have active participation by the husband as a coach, to teach the mother how to have excellent nutrition while pregnant and nursing, to teach the avoidance of all drugs, to teach relaxation and breathing, to teach "tuning-in" to a woman's own body, to teach immediate and continuous contact with the new baby, to teach the mother how to breastfeed beginning at birth, and to teach parents that they are responsible for the safety of the birth place, procedures, attendants, and emergency back-up. Leesa Brotherton had an excellent experience with The Bradley Method while delivering her first son. She had no drugs, tears, or episiotomies. She birthed a delightful baby boy; and commented that the pushing "felt great!" She thoroughly enjoyed using The Bradley Method, "What do you have to lose by having more information?"

In general, women do not know enough about the labor process, especially with her first child. The Bradley Method not only teaches women about child birth, but it also helps her to prepare her mind, body, and soul for child birth. It teaches her that child birth is a natural thing, and her body if given the chance, can do an excellent job of taking over and handling the pain.

Eliot's pessimistic view of life permeates his poetry to such an extent that the modern reader finds little to enjoy in his poetry.

It is unquestionable that Eliot's negative view on life is a defining quality of his poetry it is this negative attitude that infuses him with the bravura ability to create unique works, and so it is that Pessimism does not inundate the poem but rather gives it a distinctive superiority which contradicts the expectations set up by romanticism, hence providing a varied sense of pleasure.

In spite of this brilliant aspect there are many other areas from which the modern reader may derive enjoyment. These include the assorted poetic techniques such as wit, imagery, words choice, free verse, unusual metaphors and so forth; the diverse personal skills and empathy that Eliot interweaves in his poems; the adoption of an objective correlative advance allowing the reader to formulate his/her own reaction; and the range of perspectives from which one is able to criticise and relate his work.

Eliot's pessimistic view of life enhances his ability to capture the very essence of negative human behaviour and circumstances. It lends him the aptitude to conjure forcefully detailed images, thrusting the reader into an intensely disorientating situation that spares no aspect of the harsh, unforgiving conditions of the early 100s. Eliot's realism and divergence from the typical idealism of previous poetry compels the educated reader to take gratification at having had the opportunity to see the truth, the unfairness in the world.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on T.S Eliot

Eliot's ability to conjure such realistic experiences, for instance in Preludes allows the reader to fully understand the complicated, inequitable structure of human society and appreciate not having to physically live through the hardships of early 0th century. It allows the reader to contrast the 'dingy shades' to their own Venetian blinds and be thankful.

With the other masquerades

That time resumes,

One thinks of all the hands

That are raising dingy shades

In a thousand furnished rooms.

In addition to Eliot's pessimism, his ability to skilfully apply and even generate his own distinctive poetic techniques such as wit, imagery, words choice, free verse and unlikely comparisons (including metaphors) provides the modern reader with much enjoyment.

In The love song of J. Alfred Prufrock Eliot has artistically applied wit to the very title itself. Initially upon reading the words 'love song' the reader is set with expectations of a classically sentimental ballad however after more in depth scrutiny, the surname 'Prufrock' is found to conceal a hidden hint as to the subject matter. The name itself holds connotations of a 'prude' in a 'frock' presenting the reader with a much clearer indication of the character, it reveals the persona's effeminacy and through it one of the sources behind the dilemma presented within the poem. The Poet's ability to apply wit subtly and intelligently generates excitement for the modern reader who nowadays finds little of the metaphysical imaginative capacity about.

Eliot's particular potency with imagery and word choice is unparalleled. His ability to provoke one's imagination and simultaneously appeal to a number of senses leaves the reader with a memorable imprint that despite the pessimism in the poems will have been a source of entertainment in itself.

This is clearly demonstrated in first stanza of part II in Portrait of a lady

Now, that lilacs are in bloom

She has a bowl of lilacs in her room

And twists one in her fingers while she talks.

'Ah my friend, you do not know, you do not know

What life is, you who hold it in your hands';

(Slowly twisting the lilac stalks)

You let it flow from you, you let if flow,

And youth is cruel , and has no more remorse

And smiles at situations which it cannot see.'

I smile, of course

And go on drinking tea

In this single stanza alone Eliot has appealed to all five senses. One could see the delicate lilacs, hear the incessant voice of the lady, feel the flower that she slowly twists and strangles, smell the perfume of the flora and taste the bitter tea.

Eliot's pessimistic outlook on life led to his refusal to conform to the optimistic approach of romanticism, this in turn led to his pioneering application of poetic techniques like the Imagist stylization of free verse and the use of perplexing comparisons. These relatively fresh techniques in particular free verse, is extremely effective and enjoyable because it doesn't not restrain the poet from complete expression. Poems that take on this form can also be pleasurable to the modern reader who finds the repetitive structure of Petrarchan and Shakespearean poetry a bore.

Another facet the modern reader may find enjoyable is Eliot's vast experiences and skills which impart his poems with wondrous associations as well as lattices of allusions. His proficiency in both Western and Eastern philosophy, religions, languages, cultures and beliefs which included Christianity, Hinduism, Italian, English, Latin, French and Sanskrit, provided him with a wide source of knowledge to draw upon. His thorough education in European literature also served as a whirlpool of scholarship that he was able to utilise in producing his works of genius.

An example of Eliot's use of his learnedness is featured in the epigraph to The love song of J .Alfred Prufrock (an allusion to Dante's Inferno).

These skills in conjunction with his background and observances of the working class allowed him to have a heightened empathy of those around him. Having suffered through his life from various occurrences for example his disagreement with his family which led to his moving to England, his disastrous marriage to Vivian Haywood, The two world wars and the endurance of two break downs gave his works a genuine feel of sorrow with which the modern reader may sympathise

Eliot's adoption of an objective correlative approach, the use if items and events to express his feelings rather than statements, allows the reader to formulate an individual reaction and opinions while being aware of the poet's concerns, unlike man other poems that attempt to impose a certain view on the reader, this freedom gives the reader a keenness to view the information presented in the poem as they do .

; the diverse personal skills and empathy that Eliot interweaves in his poems; the adoption of an objective correlative advance allowing the reader to formulate his/her own reaction; and the range of perspectives from which one is able to criticise and relate his work.

Eliot's pessimistic view of life permeates his poetry to such an extent that the modern reader finds little to enjoy in his poetry.

Cricketer Shane Warne should be fined and banned from playing cricket. On the of January Shane Warne took a prescribed drug given to him by his mother. He took the drug without checking with his physio or doctor, which has been a policy for the cricketers for many months. One of the more common uses for this pill is drastic weight loss. Even when Warne has been asked to lose weight, there is no reason for taking this drug when there are side affects, which a cricketer would not want. Warne took the drug the day he announced that he was retiring from one-day cricket after the world cup.

When taking a drug, the policy for everyone in the cricket squad is that they cant take anything without the consent of their physio or doctor. Shane Warne took a prescription drug from his mother knowing that it could have been illegal. If you take a drug, then you must know what is in it, and by being a cricketer Shane

Warne should be more concerned about his body health than anyone. Because he didn't check with his physio or doctor if he was allowed to take the pill, it is clear that he has something to hide. If there is a strong policy about not taking drugs then you wouldn't neglect that unless there is something strange happening. Shane Warne knows all about drug testing so he has ignored the warning signs and should pay for what he has done.

Order custom research paper on shane warns should be banned from playing cricket

The drug Shane Warne took is known as Moduretic, which can be used to mask performance-enhancing drugs, which are illegal. Even though this pill reduces weight, it is very ineffective for long-term weight loss because the body only sheds fluid not fat. It can leave you dehydrated that is why it would be unwise to use it as a weight loss pill. Even though he has a shoulder injury, Dr Peter Lewis said that there are much better drugs available for reducing swelling which are perfectly legal. If this drug is not the best way to either reduce weight or reduce swelling, and the drug is illegal, then Shane Warne would want to use the best drug available. Shane took the drug to cover up his use of steroids there for he should be banned from playing cricket. Did Shane Warne take this drug out of stupidity even when he knows that he shouldn't take it or did Shane Warne take it because he was covering up his use of steroids?

Shane Warne is educated about the use of drugs and he should have known better. Out of plain stupidity Shane Warne took the drug and now has to face consequences. As a professional sportsman he is well informed about drugs in sport and is always being drug tested. Even Shane didn't know if the drug was illegal, he should have checked with the physio or doctor and because of his stupidity he has been caught. Shane Warne knew that he could be drug tested at any time but he chose to ignore the facts. If you ignore the rules and don't play fair then you should expect a penalty because it is not fair on the other players. Shane Warne wasn't thinking about the consequences when he took the drug and for that he must be banned from playing cricket until he learns that taking drugs is the wrong thing to do.

Shane Warne has been Stupid taking the drug. He has caused a lot of trouble for himself because he didn't checked with his physio or doctor before hand if it was a legal drug. He took the pill to lose weight quickly but the reasons why he took that particular drug to lose just isn't convincing. Shane Warne has not done the right thing by himself or his teammates and because of his careless, stupid actions he should be banned for years from playing cricket.

Mahatma Gandhi whose real name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was born in 186 at Porbandar in the state of Gujarat in India. His father's name was Karamchand Gandhi and his mother's name was Putlibai. He was the youngest in the family of one sister and three brothers. Both his parents were deeply religious and frequently visited temples and took their meals only after daily prayers. In school Gandhi was a mediocre student who was quite an introvert. He was even afraid to talk to any student in the class as he thought that they would poke fun at him. However, he always upheld his honesty and truthfulness. He believed in respecting his elders and was always 'blind to the faults of the elders'. Gandhi was married in 188 at the age of thirteen to a girl named Kasturbai. He passed his matriculation exams in 1887 and then soon returned to Porbander as he found the studies of his college very tough. Then later on he went on to the University of London in England to pursue the study of law after a lot of opposition from his mother and some other people .He vowed not to touch woman, wine and meat. He passed the London matriculation exam in the second attempt. At last he sailed back to India in June, 181.later on, he went to Bombay to study Indian Laws. In spite of getting a case, he went to South Africa in April 18. Gandhi sailed for South Africa in April 18 and reached Natal at the close of May. It was in South Africa that Gandhi had a lot of experience in laws, handling cases and many other fields. He observed the pitiful conditions of the Indians and other colored people and also experienced it when on his way to Pretoria from Natal, he was thrown out of a train because he was the only colored person in the first class compartment. During this time Gandhi became deeply interested in religion. In spite of his Christian friends' tries of converting him to Christianity, he kept his faith. He helped the Indentured Indian laborers and fought for their rights. After three years in South Africa, Gandhi returned to India in 186. Gandhi had a lot of shortcomings in his personal life. He was a very suspicious husband and kept an eye on all the movements of his wife, Kasturbai. This resulted in bitter quarrels becoming the order of the day. But in his autobiography, Gandhi says that he did all this because he "wanted to make his wife an ideal wife and make her live a pure life." Some more of his shortcomings were that at a young age he had started smoking and eating meat in company of a cousin and a friend. He stole money from his servant's pocket and bought cigarettes. At last he gave up all the malpractices and became a strict vegetarian and stuck to it all his life. He educated his children and the child of his widow sister. He also became a very religious person and was greatly influenced by the "saintliness" of his mother. He practiced Ahimsa (non-violence), Brahmacharya (celibacy) and Aparigraha (non-possession). In his public life, Gandhi was very successful. When he went to South Africa, he came in contact with many people and went through many experiences. He protested against the color bar and helped all those who were neglected During the Boer War he participated with the British. He and some other people joined to form the Ambulance Corps who took care of the wounded fighters. Gandhi awakened a sense of duty to the Indians settled in South Africa, so that they sent money for the famine relief during the famines in India in 187 and 18. In 117, he got the Indentured Emigration from India, abolished. After returning to India, he set about reforming it. His campaign in India started from Champaran, a small place in the state of Bihar. There he fought for the rights of Indigo farmers. He upheld the principles of Swaraj (self rule), Swadeshi (self sufficiency) and Satyagraha (truth as a medium of protest). He instructed the people not to wear foreign clothes or use foreign goods. He told them to make their own clothes using handlooms and the cloth that they wore was known as Khadi. Even Gandhi made his own clothes by using a Charkha (spinning wheel), which became the symbol of prosperity and integrity of India. Gandhi created a number of Ashrams or communities where men, women and children from all backgrounds and nationalities came to learn from his daily example on how to make non-violence and love the basis of their lives. One of the ashrams was the Sabarmati Ashram in the state of Gujarat. He understood the problems of the untouchables who were thrown out of society. He called these people "Harijans" or "people of the lord". Wherever he went, he collected money for the Harijans. He traveled in the third class of the trains, which were dirty and meant for the low caste Indians. When someone asked him why, he simply said, "Because there is no fourth." Gandhi faced many challenges towards the end of his life. In 10, the British government levied tax on salt, which was the primary ingredient of every household's meal. Gandhi collected some followers and marched to a small, coastal town of Dandi, situated near the Arabian Sea, 40 miles away, where he proposed to produce salt from the sea water. Thousands of people joined the march on the way. This was known as the DANDI MARCH. Gandhi was arrested after this incident. But this did not hinder his courage. He started the NON- CO-OPERATION MOVEMENT. Nobody was to co-operate with the British, which would lead to their leaving India. On the 8th of August 14 the QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT started. This non-violent protest disrupted and destroyed the British Government and their system of governance and added nationalistic fire to every Indian's heart. On the eve of independence, Hindus and Muslims in India were in the throes of civil war. All the government forces were powerless to stop the massacres. The bloodshed and destruction touched the very depths of Gandhi. He went straight to the heart of the violence and walked barefoot through the remote, ravaged villages as a one-man force for peace. "He who trembles or takes to the heels, the moment he sees two people fighting, is not non-violent, but a coward. A non-violent person will lay down his life in preventing such quarrels" said Gandhi and he truly justified it. It was on the evening of 0th of January 148, that the final tragedy took place. Mahatma Gandhi was in Delhi, requesting for Hindu-Muslim unity. When the time for prayer meeting came, he walked briskly with his arms on the shoulder of two of the ashram girls. As he walked to the platform through the huge crowd, he held his palms together in front of him. Suddenly, a young man placed himself in Gandhi's path and fired a gun point-blank into his heart. Such was the greatness of Gandhi that as his body fell, he called out "Rama, Rama, Rama" which meant I forgive you, I love you, I bless you. The killer was later identified as Nathuram Godse, a Hindu fanatic. This 0th day of January, is known in India as the Martyr's Day.
