He inquired, "are you able to show me the form in which you take the soul of a believer?" The Angel of Death then requested him to turn away and when Abraham turned around he saw a young, handsome man, who was perfumed and finely attired. Thereupon Abraham said, "O Angel of Death, were the believer to encounter only your form upon his death it would be quite suffice him!"(Hamid 45). So it will be spread out throughout his body, then it will be ripped away as a skewer/spit is ripped out of damp cotton and in its way out it will tear and cut the nerves and blood vessels and then he will be cursed by all the angels between the earth and the sky and by all the angels in the sky, and at last gates of heaven will be closed. Thereupon, he will take the soul, not leaving it in his hand for longer than a blink of an eye until they have placed it in that sackcloth. And there will emanate from it a stench like that of the most evil smelling corpse. Then they shall ascend with it, and they shall not pass with it by a group of angels but they will say, "What is this wicked soul?" Then they shall say to them, "he is such the son of such", choosing the most hated of the names he used to be called in this life. Until they reach the lowest part of heaven, then the person shall ask permission to enter, and they shall not be granted entry. Then Mohammed recites, The doors of the sky are not opened to them, nor shall they enter heaven until the camel passes through the eye of the needle" (Life after Death 1-).

The last type of people are the majority of people, it is not clear to them whether they will enter heaven or hell. But, it is clear to Allah (God) as to which of them will enter the gates of paradise or to the depths of hell. In Silent Witness, there are three main characters Allen, Lucy, and Robert. Allen was a senior in high school who took a particular interest in cinematography, which is what ultimately killed him. I still remember back when Bill Gates and I first met. IT was back in the 160s at Lakeside a private school in Seattle. When we first met I thought man what a dork but then I realized being his friend could come in handy some day. But one day I walked into our apartment after class and they were both incredibly excited. After I managed to calm them down, they told me they had just finished something that would make them known in the computer world, something called BASIC. And little did I know I was witnessing history, that day (or in that five week period) the world's first microcomputer software company was born, hard for even me to believe. A few weeks later they told me they had come up with a name, 'Microsoft' I had no idea that word would soon become a household name. Bill soon left Harvard in 175, and said he would be back but I had a feeling he was moving onto greater things, him and Paul, I was just sorry I couldn't be a part of it. We kept in touch, and still do. In fact I can still remember pretty much how Microsoft came to be the billion dollar corporation it is today, every time Bill had some type of breakthrough he would call and let me know the good news. IBM came to Bill later, about five years later I believe, and asked him to develop an operating system. Of course he called me He told me he had finished the operating system and wanted me to see it, he called it MS-DOS, or Microsoft Disk Operating System. I went to his house and the only thing I saw was a black screen with little white letters with a blinking cursor. I didn't quite understand the ramifications of the small blinking cursors with the white letters, but when I picked up a computer magazine on a street corner about one year later, I finally understood what Bill had done. I can't quite remember the headline on the magazine but I do remember reading this, "Bill Gates creates industry standard with MS-DOS" I called him and told him I was actually quite surprised, but then again I didn't know anything about computers so he didn't feel too bad that it had taken me a year to realize what he had accomplished. Soon after Bill called me again, and once again I found myself at his house looking at a computer screen. He told me he had once again come up with something new, something he called 'Windows' And once again I didn't quite understand this little operating system. But I later found myself experiencing deja vu when I picked up another computer magazine and saw Bill on the cover with a picture of this 'Windows' he had so proudly displayed to me earlier. For awhile I didn't get any calls from Bill and Microsoft continued to grow and grow, I was later surprised to pick up Fortune and find out that Bill was at the top on the Forbes list. It has now been 40 years since I first met Bill, a skinny little nerdy looking kid in Seattle. But he has never ceased to amaze me. Good Friday. What's good about it? In mediaeval England it was called God's Friday. Said quickly (and perhaps thoughtlessly) God's Friday became 'Gd' Friday. Really, was it ever God's Friday? What did he ever do that day besides stand around uselessly? Surely it's more accurate to speak of Pilate's Friday. Because of this one Friday Pilate's name will never be forgotten. Or perhaps it's more accurate to speak of the crowd's Friday. After all, the crowd triumphed, howling for Christ's head until its bloodlust was satisfied.

In many respects there was nothing unique about this Friday. Pilate had executed many before it and would execute many after it. The crowd was neither better nor worse than any crowd in any era. The city, Jerusalem, Hier Shalem, city of peace (supposedly) was the city that had always slain the prophets. This Friday was no different.

None the less, Christians have always known that Good Friday genuinely is God's Friday. Christians have always found God's Friday anticipated repeatedly in God's dealing with a rebellious creation. As far back as Genesis 15 early-day Christians saw this day anticipated in the declaration that the offspring of woman would crush the serpent's head, the serpent symbolising sin's seduction. The sacrificial system of the older testament came to be seen not as efficacious in itself but efficacious inasmuch as the secret substance of its slain animals was the sacrifice of the Lamb of God slain on behalf of everyone everywhere. The culmination of the sacrificial system was the Day of Atonement, when Israel's sin was confessed upon the scapegoat that was then driven off. (The goat, rather than a sheep, as our Lord's parable would make plain centuries later; the goat typified rejection at God's hand.) Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, was serving as priest in the temple's sacrifice-service when he was told that the son to be born to him would herald the one whose rejection at the hand of the Father would make possible our acceptance.

I -- Israel's centuries-long preoccupation with sacrifice adds up to something the early church knew unshakeably one died for sin. Jesus of Nazareth, Son of God and Messiah of Israel; this one died for sin. The apostles are united in their conviction of this truth. Mark insists that Jesus came to give himself a ransom for us. Peter insists that Jesus bore our sins in his body on the tree. John speaks repeatedly of our Lord's hour, and by it means only his death. Paul writes, Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us.

It's no wonder that so much of the church is feeble today when so much of the church denies the centrality and cruciality and efficacy of the cross. How central is it to the apostolic mind and heart? Fifty per cent of the written gospels discusses one week only of Christ's life, the last week. How crucial is it? When Jesus himself speaks of the purpose of his coming and when his followers speak of the purpose of his coming they all point to the singular event of the cross. How efficacious is it? Paul says that the only sermon he has in his briefcase (which sermon, we should note, he will therefore have to repeat again and again) is a sermon about the cross. He calls it the word of the cross. He tells any and all that he intends to speak only of Jesus Christ and him crucified. With what result? He has seen the hardened unbeliever moved to repentance and the contemptuous scoffer moved to surrender and the uncomprehending dabbler brought to apprehend the wisdom and work of God apart from which the dabbler would still be uncomprehending and unsaved.

A minute ago I spoke of the goat on which the sin of Israel was laid (as it were) on the Day of Atonement. I said that a goat, unlike a sheep, betokened rejection. The Son of God was rejected on Good Friday. His cry of dereliction can mean nothing else. Yet we mustn't think that the Father cruelly rejected the Son while the Son lovingly identified himself with sinners. Son of is a Hebrew expression meaning of the same nature as. To speak of Jesus as Son of God is to say that Father and Son are one in their nature, one in their purpose, one in its implementation. We must never think that the Father severely judges sin while the Son mercifully bears that judgement. Father and Son are one in their judgement upon sin and one in their suffering the penalty of sin. Then to say that the Son tasted the most anguished rejection at the Father's hand is to say that the Father's heart was seared with the self-same anguish. To say that Jesus died for sin and therein tasted the bitterest death (utter alienation from his Father) is to say that the Father himself tasted the bitterest self-alienation.

All of this adds up to the centrality, cruciality and efficacy of the cross provision was made for us through the sacrifice of that crucified One who died for sin. To be sure, our Lord wasn't the only person crucified on Good Friday. Still, his crucifixion was unique identified as he was with all humankind, he made provision for all. He, he alone, died for sin.

II -- The provision our Lord made for you and me he plainly made for the two men who died alongside him. One of them, it should pain us to say, died in sin. This man spurned the provision made for him.

Part II of the sermon, I must tell you, isn't going to be a pleasant discussion, because part II speaks of loss; ultimate loss, indescribable loss, eternal loss. Still, we can no more deny our Lord's teaching here than we can deny his teaching of the Sermon on the Mount. The Jesus whose teachings some of them Pollyanna people select happens to be the Jesus who warned of ultimate loss every day.

Luke tells us a construction accident occurred in first century Palestine when a tower fell on the men building it. It killed them. Some feisty Galileeans decided to test Pilate's patience when they fomented an insurrection. Pilate executed them. Jesus insisted that the crushed workmen and the executed insurrectionists were no greater sinners than anyone else. Nevertheless, says Jesus in making a point out of these events for the benefit of his hearers, unless you repent you will all likewise perish. (Luke 11-5)

Do you know whom you should fear?, Jesus asked on another occasion, Don't fear humans! What can they do to you, ultimately? You should fear him who can destroy both body and soul in hell. (Matthew 108) I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. (John 81) You're lying, his enemies jeered at him. Am I?, said Jesus, Where I'm going, you can't come. You will die in your sin. (John 81) Jesus maintained that many would die in their sin. Then it shouldn't surprise us, however much it should horrify us, that one fellow in particular did just that.

Scripture speaks of the riches of God's kindness and forbearance and patience. (Rom. 4) We are told that we mustn't presume upon God's kindness and forbearance and patience. We mustn't presume upon them just because they are meant to lead us to repentance. God's kindness and forbearance and patience are never meant to let us indulge our sin but always and only to lead us to repentance. In the Hebrew bible repentance is a turning towards God, a turning towards God that is really a returning to him who has made us, has suffered for us and now claims us. When the Hebrew mind hears of returning to God it thinks in terms of three vivid pictures of returning in everyday life. The first is of an unfaithful wife returning to her husband; the second is of idol-worshippers returning to the true and living God; the third is of rebel subjects returning to their rightful ruler. The unfaithful wife returns to longstanding love. The idol-worshippers return to truth, to substance, to solidity. The rebel subjects return to legitimate authority.

The riches of God's kindness and forbearance and patience are meant to induce repentance in us as we return to him to whom we've been unfaithful, return to him whose truth we've trifled with, return to him whose authority we've disregarded.

The unrepentant fellow who was crucified alongside Jesus; unrepentant, he frittered away the day of God's kindness and forbearance and patience. Unrepentant, he refused to turn towards God, refused to return to faithful love and shining truth and rightful authority. Unrepentant, he simply died in sin.

Our Lord had said, I am the light of the world; anyone who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. Don't give us that!, the disdainful had said then as they say now. You should know, then, our Lord had continued, that where I'm going you can't come. You'll die in your sin.

III -- The third fellow, however, died to sin. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. And our Lord's reply we all know Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise. (Luke 4-)

What did the fellow mean when he said, Jesus, remember me? What's the force of remember? Did the dying felon mean, Think of me once in a while? Recall me nostalgically now and then? In fact the fellow meant something very different. Jewish as he was and therefore possessed of a Hebrew mind, he knew that when God remembers someone, that person is granted the innermost longing of his heart, his profoundest aspiration. Hannah of old was publicly distraught and privately frantic on account of her childlessness. Then God remembered her, we are told, and she became pregnant with Samuel; with Sam-u-el, whose name means, I have asked him of God.

The man dying alongside Jesus, penitent where his partner-in-crime had remained impenitent; this fellow asked Jesus to remember him. He wanted granted the innermost longing of his heart and his profoundest aspiration. What was it? We can tell on the basis of what was granted him Forever with me, the sin-bleaching one, in paradise forever, today.

In view of the fact that the word remember is richer in Hebrew than ever we imagined, we should also probe the Hebrew significance of today. Throughout the Hebrew bible today refers to the event of God's incursion, the event of God's visitation. When today occurs God's visitation is upon us, which visitation we can't control, can't manipulate, can't postpone and then bring back when we are more in the mood or ready for something less inconvenient. Today means God has loomed before us now, is acting upon us and speaking to us now, and we trifle with him at our peril.

Today, when you hear God's voice, don't harden your hearts, both the psalmist and the writer of Hebrews warn us. (Heb. 47) Today I must stay at your house, Jesus tells Zacchaeus, only to announce at the conclusion of the meal, Today salvation has come to your house. (Luke 14, 50) When Jesus declares the paralysed man forgiven and sets him back on his feet as well, the bystanders, we are told, were filled with awe and said, 'We have seen remarkable things today.' (Luke 56. NIV) Remarkable? Of course! Today means that eternity has intersected time and the hour of someone's visitation is upon her.

The penitent criminal knew that his last moment was also the time of his visitation. Our Lord knew it too. He knew that his proximity to the dying man was God's visitation. The result of this visitation was that the man was remembered. The man was granted his heart's innermost longing and his profoundest aspiration; namely, that his sin be purged and he himself be cherished eternally. At the moment of his visitation the man died to sin. To be sure, he could die to it only because someone else had been appointed to die for it. Still, unquestionably he died to it as surely as his accomplice died in it.

IV -- The longer I live the more impressed I am at the unitary voice with which scripture speaks. Decades after the event of Good Friday apostles were speaking of the event in a manner consistent with those who had been eyewitnesses of it. Centuries before the event prophets spoke of the event in the same way. The prophet Ezekiel had written, Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? (Eze. 18) Paul would write to young Timothy, God our Saviour…desires all to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Tim. 4) Peter would write, The Lord…is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should repent. ( Peter )

Others feel that no evidence or proof of a weapons program in Iraq had been found ( Kole 1). They believe that the American people do not believe this war makes any sense (Conflict 1). Some veterans were saying "no to war in Iraq". They believe that the only real reason for the war would be for us to be attacked and Except for September 11, we have not been attacked (Veterans 1). Beneath the desire to back President Bush and the belief Saddam is a menace the polls track an undercurrent of concern about the possibility of sending in U.S. troops while other nations are pressing for alternatives. Any kind of chemical or biological weapons need to be destroyed. Now is the time to put aside debates and reflect on the sacrifice of nearly a quarter of a million Americans. When the Twin Towers collapsed in New York, the nation was awed by the willingness of a brave few who put their own lives at risk in service to others. Their efforts helped unearth a deep wellspring of pride in the country. Now is another time for awe, inspired by promising men and women who are putting themselves at risk to minimize our own. If Saddam Hussein had been removed from power and all weapons of mass destruction had been disarmed we would not be at war with Iraq. This nation is at war. Bombs and rockets are falling. Soldiers on both sides are being wounded and killed. In the face of that reality our hearts and minds are torn. Buddhism and Judaism were philosophical and religious revolutions occurring between 800 and 00 B.C. in or near the original river valley civilizations. Both Buddhism and Judaism were instrumental in shaping the history of the world. However, the two are very different. Judaism is a monotheistic religion. Buddhists claim that Buddhism is neither a religion nor a philosophy. It is my opinion that Buddhism is a philosophy and also fits into Webster's Dictionaries definition of a religion. While studying both philosophies (and/or religions) I came upon some interesting contrasts and comparisons.

Buddhism originated in the fifth century B.C. in India. Some argue that India's greatest contribution to world civilization was the Buddhist tradition. Buddhism traces its origins to a single figure; Siddhartha Gautama, known as "Buddha", or "Enlightened /Awakened One." Buddhist legend has it that Gautama led a sheltered life of ease as a young married prince until he reached the age of twenty-nine. He abandoned his wife and child to seek answers to life. While practicing intense yoga meditation under a papal tree, (now known as Bodh tree or "Enlightenment Tree") Gautama moved through different levels of trance. While in this trance, he realized all of his past lives, the cycle of the existence of all beings, as well as how one people can stop the karmic outflows that cause suffering. It was at this time that Gautama became the Buddha. Buddha devoted the remainder of his last life before his "release" to teaching others his Middle Path between asceticism and indulgence. This path is the core of the Buddhist faith.

Whereas Buddhism traces its origins to India, Judaism origin can be traced to the small nation of the Israelites, or Hebrews. Like Buddhism, Judaism had great impact on world civilization.

The Israelites generated the tradition of monotheism. Monotheism is the belief in a single, all-powerful God as the sole creator, sustainer, and ruler of the universe. At the root of the monotheistic religion stands the figure Abraham. Jews, Christians, and Muslims, look to Abraham as the founder of their monotheistic faith. These are the three major religions that have stemmed from the Judaic philosophies.

After Abraham, Moses was another central figure in the Judaism belief in one God. His victory over the Canaanites at Mount Sinai resulted in the Israelites rejection of all other Gods. At Sinai, they received both God's holy Law (the Torah) and his promise of protection and guidance for as long as they kept these laws. Both Buddhism and Judaism have laws or a code of ethics their followers strive to keep. In the Judaic faith, these laws are know as the Ten Commandments that Moses received from God for the Israelites.

The first Commandment is You shall have no other Gods before me. The second Commandment is You shall make for yourself any graven image. The second Commandment states You shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. The third Commandment states Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy. The fourth Commandment states Honor your Father and your Mother. The fifth through tenth Commandments say You shall not kill, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness against your neighbors, and you shall not covet your neighbor's house.

The Buddhist "Middle Path", which is the core of Buddhist faith and practice, begins with realizing the Four Noble Truths 1) all life is dukka, or suffering; ) the source of suffering is desiring; () the cessation of desire is the way to end suffering; (4) the path to this end is eightfold; Right Understanding, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration. Buddha's teaching is called dharma. The central idea of dharma is that everything in the world of existence is casually linked.

In both religions and philosophies, there are rewards to be had for following the rules, codes, or laws. In Judaism some rewards are the favor of and protection from God, and the promise of rewards in another place after life. In the Buddhist theology, there are many lives to be lived until true "Enlightenment" is reached. This refers to a humanly attainable wisdom that leads to compassion and release from the suffering of life, to a place where there is no more suffering, called nirvana.

Another religion that sprung from Buddhism is the Hindu traditions, which include teachings from Buddha, the Upanishadic philosophies, and Jain. The Upanishadic and Jain religions also originated in India. The central core of the Hindu religion seems to be based on Buddhism.

In my opinion, these two major philosophical and religious revolutions have had an enormous impact on the world. They have affected what people believe about the purpose of life and how we should live our lives. A great commonality in these teachings is that we should be compassionate, wise, and "good". The world has suffered greatly from different religious values, and yet at the same time, humanity has benefited greatly from some of these values.

Despite great differences, both Buddhism and Judaism offer feelings of belonging and hope for an improved future existence. They both offer explanations as to why we are here and how we should live our lives. The greatest difference is the worship of two different central figures God and Buddha.

Enfield tells a story of how, one night at about 00 am, he saw a strange, deformed man round the corner and bump into a young girl. The strange man did not stop but simply walked right over the young girl, who cried out in terror. Enfield rushed over and attended the girl along with her family. Still, the strange man carried on, so Enfield chased him down and urged him back. A doctor was called and Enfield and the doctor felt an odd hatred of the man, warning the man that they would discredit him in every way possible unless he compensated the girl. The strange man agreed to offer 100 British pounds. Enfield notes that the man is like Satan in the way he seems emotionally cold to the situation. The strange man presented a cheque signed by an important person, which they together cashed the next morning. Enfield states that he refers to the building as Black Mail House. Utterson asks Enfield if he ever asked who lived in the building, but Enfield explains that he doesnt ask questions about strange things the more it looks like Queer Street, the less I ask. The building appears lived in, and the two men carry on their walk. Enfield continues that the strange man he saw that night looked deformed, though he could explain how. Utterson assures Enfield that his story has caught his interest. The two agree never to talk about the story again. Chapter The same evening, Utterson came home. Instead of reading until sleep at midnight, he poured over the will of his friend Henry Jekyll, a doctor and very educated man. The will stated that Jekylls possessions and position should be handed over to Mr. Hyde, a friend that Utterson had never heard nor met. Utterson went to the house of Dr. Lanyon, an old school and college friend of Uttersons and Jekylls, and asked him about Hyde, but Lanyon had never heard of him. Lanyon uses several evil references when talking about Jekyll, such as devilish, and gone wrong, foreboding evil relations between Jekyll and Hyde. Utterson knows something is wrong between the two. Utterson cant sleep for the rest of the night. Utterson considers how the strange man Enfield spoke of could trample a child and care nothing for it. Utterson staked out the door of the strange building looking for the strange man, whom he also believed was Mr. Hyde. One night, he found him. He confronts him as he is about to go inside the strange door, and finds the strange man is indeed Mr. Hyde. Hyde is unpleasant, cool, defiant, and confident. Utterson convinces Hyde to show his face, and Hyde suggests Utterson should know his address, implying that he knows of Jekylls will. Utterson refers to Hyde to himself as troglodytic, meaning a primitive human being, detestable and unpleasant. Utterson decides to try and visit Jekyll at the late hour. At Jekylls home, he learns from the servants that Hyde never east dinner at Jekylls house, but is always there in the laboratory, with his own key. The servants rarely see him, but they have orders to obey him. Utterson leaves, and reflects upon his own life, what evil deeds he may be guilty of, and what bad things his friend Jekyll may have done in his life. He decides that this Hyde must be gravely evil, far worse than anything Jekyll may have ever done. Utterson decides to try and discover what evil things Hyde has done and may be doing, but fears that his friend Jekyll will object. To finish, Utterson again considers the strange will of Jekyll, specifically that it he disappears for longer than three months, that his estate should be turned over to Hyde. Utterson fears that Hyde might kill Jekyll for the will. Chapter Dr. Jekyll has a dinner party and Utterson attends. Utterson is a well liked and respected man, by Jekyll as well as anyone. Utterson stays behind after the party, and talks with Jekyll about the will. Jekyll tries at first to politely and jovially avoid the topic towards his scientific rivalry with Dr. Lanyon, but Utterson insists. Utterson explains that he thinks the will is a bad idea, and Jekyll wishes to stop talking about it. Jekyll states that he is in a unique situation that cant be fixed through talking, but Utterson promises that he can be trusted to help in confidence. Jekyll insists that he is in control, that he can be rid of Mr. Hyde at his own discretion. He begs Utterson to leave the matter alone. He explains that he has great interest in Hyde, and that Utterson follow his will and secure Jekylls estate for Hyde if Jekyll passes away. Utterson promises to fulfill this duty. Chapter 4 One of Jekylls maid servants is watching out her window on a foggy night and sees Hyde and Sir Danvers meet by chance, They talk under her window, and without warning, Hyde explodes with rage and strikes Danvers with his heavy cane. Hyde stomped upon the man, crushing his bones, while the maid faints. The maid wakes up, calls the police. They find a purse and gold watch, and an envelope for Utterson on the victim, but no papers or cards. They find part of Hydes splintered, broken cane. Utterson goes to the police station to see the body. Utterson identifies the victim as Danvers, and notices that the piece of cane resembles one he gave to Jekyll a long time ago. Utterson leads the police to Hydes house in Soho. As they arrive at Hydes house, Utterson notices the darkness from the brown fog, and considers the fear people must have of the law and the police. At Hydes, an very white skinned woman with grey hair and an evil face tells them she hadnt seen Hyde for months. At first the woman protests, but she seems happy to learn that Hyde might be in trouble. In the house, Utterson and the police inspector find that only a few rooms are being used. They find clues to show that Hyde was responsible for the murder Hydes clothes had been ransacked, a burnt cheque book, the other part of the cane, and at the bank, Hydes account had several thousand pounds (British money) in it. The inspector believed that they could simply catch him when he returned to the bank, but found that without an accurate description of Hyde, they could not prepare the bank to recognize Hyde when he came in again. Chapter 5 Utterson goes to Jekylls house, and up to his cabinet (bedroom), where he finds Jekyll sick, not even getting up to say hello. Utterson tells Jekyll that Danvers was a client of his and asks if Jekyll is hiding Hyde. Jekyll declares that Hyde is safe, and Utterson finds it strange that Jekyll can be so sure. Jekyll gives Utterson a letter written by Hyde where he apologizes to Jekyll for causing so much trouble, although Jekyll is afraid that the letter might harm his own reputation. Guest notices that Hydes handwriting is the same as Jekylls, except slanted differently. Utterson cannot imaging why Jekyll would forge Hydes letter for him. Chapter 6 The polices investigation into Hydes background showed that he had a violent reputation. In the meantime, Jekyll seemed better than ever in his life. On January 6th, Jekyll had a dinner party, and Utterson and Lanyon went. However, after that date, Jekyll refused to allow any visitors. Utterson decides to visit Lanyon, but finds that Lanyon seems deathly sick, and wont discuss why except that he has had a shock. He seems that he has been terrified, and begs not to be reminded of Jekyll. Utterson goes home and writes a complaint to Jekyll about not taking visitors, and about Lanyon. The next day, Jekyll replies that he is sorry and doesnt blame Lanyon for not wishing to ever hear of Jekyll again, but doesnt say why. Jekyll asks Utterson to let me be alone to suffer for a great evil deed that he has committed. Utterson feels that there must be some very serious explanation for the strange behavior of both Lanyon and Jekyll. A week later Utterson receives a letter from Lanyon. Inside is another letter marked that it shouldnt be opened until the time that Jekyll disappears. Utterson is tempted to open it, but honors the order on the envelope not to open it yet. Utterson checked in with Poole, Jekylls servant, who said that Jekyll stayed in his room, laid awake, did not read and was miserable. Utterson tried to visit less and less. Chapter 7 On a walk with Richard Enfield again, he and Utterson resolve never to see Hyde again. Enfield tells that he now knows that the building Hyde entered that night long ago was Jekylls house. As they strolled by Jekylls house, they saw him in a window. Utterson urges him to come for a walk, but Jekyll refuses. They agree to talk while Jekyll sits at the window. Suddenly, a look of terror comes over Jekylls face, and the window blind is shut in front of him, hiding him from the sight of Utterson and Enfield. Frightened, the two men look at each other. God forgive us! cries out Utterson, and the two men walk on. Chapter 8 Poole comes to Uttersons house in a panic, saying that Jekyll is locked up in his room again. Poole fears that Jekyll has been murdered and that the killer is still in his room, pacing back and forth and moaning and crying out. Utterson agrees to go to Jekylls house with Poole. When they arrive, they find all the house servants crowded around the fireplace in fear of what goes up in Jekylls room. Poole tells Utterson that he wants him to hear what is going on in Jekylls room. They proceed, and Poole calls out to his master, saying that Utterson is there to visit. A voice answers that is certainly Jekyll, pleading for Utterson to leave him alone. Poole reports that the person in the room tosses out papers with orders for chemicals from every company in London, but with every delivery, Jekyll/Hyde refuses them and sends them back claiming they are not pure. They examine the notes, and find that the writing is Jekylls, but with a strange slant like Hydes. Poole mentions that he saw the person in the room at one point, but it looked like Hyde, not Jekyll Poole and Utterson decide to break down the door and find out what has happened in Jekylls room, using an axe. They post two other servants near the door to prevent Jekyll/Hyde from escaping should he get past Utterson and Poole. Utterson and Poole consider that they face some danger in doing this. While they wait for the other servants to get into position, they sit in the old surgery theatre, where Poole describes how Jekyll/Hyde paces back and forth across the floor and sometimes cries out. After the servants are ready, Utterson warns Jekyll that he is coming in, and the voice begs him not to. They burst in and find Hyde twitching and dying on the floor. They look around and find various articles, but no sign of Jekylls body. They find chemicals, a book, a cheval-glass, and a strange drug. They search the house, and still do not find the body. Utterson finds Jekylls latest will and learns that it leaves his estate to Utterson, not Hyde. Utterson finds this strange because Hyde was in the room and cold have destroyed this will in favor of the one that names him the recipient of the will. Utterson finds a note written in Jekylls handwriting, and is afraid to read it. In it Jekyll says that he has disappeared, that Utterson should read the letter Lanyon sent, and also Jekylls own confession which is included with this note. Utterson returns to his office where he will read the two important documents. Chapter - Lanyons Narrative On January th, Lanyon receives a letter from Jekyll. It tells Lanyon that this is a matter of life and death. Lanyon is to go to Jekylls house, and The door of my cabinet is then to be forced; and you are to go in alone; to open the glazed press (letter E) on the left hand, breaking the lock if it be shut; and to draw out, with all its contents as the stand, the fourth drawer from the top or (which is the same thing) the third from the bottom. This is to get Jekylls drug. Then, Lanyon is to return to his own homes consulting room, and wait for a visitor at midnight from Jekyll. Lanyon does this and finds the drug that Jekyll must have made because it is not as neatly done as a chemist would do. He returns to his home and waits for the visitor, keeping a gun with him (revolver) should he need to defend himself. At midnight, Hyde shows up, and is very excited to get the drug, almost crazy, but he stays calm enough. Once Lanyon gives it to him, a scary smile comes over Hydes face. He tells Lanyon that Lanyon was a fool, and that he would now see proof of transcendental medicine. He drinks the drug and changes into Jekyll in a terrifying way that haunts Lanyon for the rest of his few days until he dies. Lanyon ends his letter by saying that he cannot tell what Jekyll told him because it is too terrible, other than that Jekyll and Hyde are the same person.
