He is obviously proud of his works of art, just as he expected to be proud of his wife. We are also reminded, as Neptune was taming a sea-horse, that the duke managed to tame his wife, only in death. The Duke was also constantly suspicious of his wife, as is shown by the line;

Sir, twas not

Her husbands presence only, called that spot

Of joy into the Duchess cheek.

The Duke unreasonably suspects his wife of having been flirtatious even with the painter, so bad were her flirting tendencies. As the painter, Fra Pandolf, is a friar, this is very unlikely. The line serves to reinforce the idea that the Dukes obsession is not completely based on real incidents, rather mostly in his mind.

The relationships the characters themselves had with their fictional lovers were completely different. Although Porphyrias lover does kill her, there is still a tenderness and emotion in his monologue that is not apparent in My Last Duchess. The lover seems capable of more emotion than the duke. It was the lover who sat in the cold cottage in a storm, and listened with heart fit to break for Porphyrias return. The Duke, however, only has the faded memory of his anger and jealousy towards the Duchess. The poem does not serve as a picture of the Dukes emotions, just to show us the warning to the emissary, the silent listener of the poem

These differences of outlook also show themselves in the way that the Duke and the lover murder their respective women. The Duke kills his duchess out of hatred and jealousy. He tells the emissary

I gave commands

And then all smiles stopped together.

This method of murder, simply giving commands to another man is extremely impersonal compared to that of Porphyria. Porphyrias lover killed her with emotion, and debatably, he killed her out of love. He simply found a thing to do

All her hair.

In one yellow string I wound

Three times her little throat around

And strangled her.

It is done almost tenderly, and it seems, without any form of guilt or remorse. The line lengths are between five and seven syllables, making the verse seem light-hearted. At the end of the verse, the lover tells us

All night long we have not stirred,

And yet God has not said a word.

It is as if the lover feels that God has condoned his actions, so made them acceptable to the speaker.

The relationship that the lover and the duke had with their women was also very different. The Duke is very explicit over what he feels the Duchess did wrong, that she

Porphyria and the Duchess, however, are more similar than the males. They both seem like beautiful, charming people. The sensual description of Porphyria making her smooth white shoulder bare gives the reader the impression that she is beautiful. The Duchess is described as being overly familiar with men from the court by her jealous Duke, but in fact she seems like a charming person

Would draw from her alike the approving speech.;

The Duchess especially seems innocent, as the Duke tells the emissary that The white mule/She rode with round the terrace. A white mule is symbolic, as white represents purity, and a mule is sterile, and so represents chastity. This subtext reinforces the idea that the murder of the Duchess was not necessary. On a similar note, when Porphyria enters into the lovers cottage, she removes her soiled gloves. This indicates that Porphyria, unlike the duchess, lacks purity. It also highlights the fact that this may be an illicit relationship. There is not much more revealed about the women in the poetry than what has already been mentioned. This is because the main focus of the poems is the actions and mentality of the men, and so it is easier for the women to be simple but charming creatures.

Due to the form of these poems, we do not learn anything about the views and attitude of Robert Browning, the poet. The narrator, or the mother of these two sisters in the story has a reliable and perceptive view of the characters. The mother understands Maggie the most. She knows her feelings and thoughts toward Wangero. I believe that the narrator does not understand Wangero as much as she understands Maggie because the narrator, at first, did not understand why Wangero wanted Grandma Dee's quilt, and only that quilt. These are all important questions, and if people think about these things, maybe conquering (or liberating) another country is not as good of an idea as they may make it sound.

In the 1400's at least part of what is present day Congo, was part of the Kongo Empire (as seen in fig.1). This empire also consisted of present day Zaire and Angola, Kongo was extremely impressive to say the least. They had a very well organized form of government. There was a hereditary leader who had rule over each village, and each group of villages was divided up into districts which were in turn ruled by a chief who was chosen by the governor or king who was in charge of that district. The Mani-Kongo (the king) had to have a strong personality, because he had no standing army, there for his personality was what held the kingdom together. Although he had no army he did have religious and political control (Spitzer).

This empire flourished in the 1400's and 1500's. It lasted all the way until the early 1700's when the kingdom was broken up because of Portuguese forces which invaded in 1665. The Portuguese had been in Kongo since 148. Relations were well maintained at first, but the Portuguese began enslaving Kongolese people and the kingdom began to fall apart. The Portuguese forces invaded the country and defeated the kings forces and killed him. This is when it all seems to have gone wrong for the residents of Kongo (Spitzer). Before all this invading happened Kongo was doing very well for itself. They had a good government, and had everything they needed. Then the Portuguese came in to town and messed everything up. Why did they do this? Was it because they could not live on what they had on their own? I do not think so. They felt they were stronger, so they decided to impose their will no these peaceful people. Looking at this from the Kongolese point of view, it was terrible. Their way of life was gone, including their homes, and their families. As described in the Conrad novel Heart of Darkness, the slavery was common. He recalls a time when a building goes up in flames, and a slave is blamed. For this, without any proof, he is severely beaten.

Many people think that countries should be left alone, and if trading is to be done, it is to be done on mutual terms. There are just as many who feel that the strong should survive. It may not be right to blame one certain country though. If one of the powers is to blame, then all of them should be blamed. It was as much competition between the countries as it was anything else. If one country got the upper hand the others would suffer, so they would each do anything it would take to prevail. There were things that each of them wanted though. Take Britain for example, they were not interested with the slave trade, it is even suggest they tried to get rid of it all together (Baldwin).

So as it seems, imperialism is here to stay. It is a big factor in our world today. Mainly with our own United States of America. There are many things that we need, or at least think we do, and we go other places to get them. Maybe we should look extra carefully at the past and see what effects imperialism has had on countries even after hundreds of years. Do we need it bad enough to ruin other people countries, homes, and lives? If not maybe we should try to find another way, because if the situation is observed from both sides, one side will not want to end up in the situation Congo, and many other countries are in today.

In the story "A & P," by John Updike, Sammy is a very complex character who has mixed reasons for quitting his supermarket job. On one hand, he is strongly against the policy that the supermarket enforces. It states that people must come into the store with their shoulders covered. On the other hand, he is trying to impress one girl whom he likes. Finally, his pride causes him to make an irrational decision, which is quitting his job. This evidence comes at the end of the story. The girls are confronted by Lengel, the store's manager, for wearing bathing suits in the grocery store. The girls decide to leave rather than argue with Lengel. The fact that Sammy follows through with his decision to quit is very intriguing because there is nothing to gain. It also forces the reader to evaluate his motives for quitting. Is he quitting to impress the girls or is he sincerely objecting to the store's stringent policy? We see that he proves to the reader his discomfort on the store's policy of having shoulders covered. He portrays this anger by thinking, "Remembering how he made that pretty girl blush, makes me so scrunchy inside I punch the No Sale tab" (87). Sammy's sincerity is very admirable but it alone does not constitute a good reason for quitting his job.

In the story, there is an abundance of evidence to confirm that Sammy quits his job to impress a girl. We know this because from the moment she walks into the store, he is mesmerized with her beauty. In the story, he often refers to her as "the queen" (8). If that isn't enough, he also obsesses over every detail that the girl has to offer. After all his admiring, he finally realizes that he has to overwhelm this girl to get her attention. So, while the girls are walking out, he tells Lengel, his boss, "I quit' just loud enough for the girls to hear, hoping they'll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero" (86). Instead, they leave and Sammy's attempt to impress the girl fails. Also, at the end of the story, he hopes that when he walks outside, the girls will be out there waiting for him, but this does not happen (87).

Sammy also makes the illogical decision to quit his job because of his pride. Sammy is given several opportunities to retract quitting his job, but instead he decides to follow through with his threat. Part of this reason is because of his pride. He tries to save himself the embarrassment of pleading for his job back. In the story, he says, "Once you begin a gesture it's fatal not to go through with it" (87). This also confirms the fragility of a person's pride. For him to back out now would be the ultimate concession of defeat. He does this, even though he knows that there will be consequences with his parents because of his rash decision. We know this because Lengel says to him, "Sammy, you don't want to do this to your Mom and Dad," and Sammy thinks to himself, "It's true, I don't" (87). Sammy's pride clouds his better judgment and causes him to make the wrong decision. He would rather disappoint his parents than damage his pride and this is all for girls that wouldn't even talk to him.
