This paradigm of 1th Century society, England is represented throughout Simon Langton's adaptation of Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice'. This concept of marriage is only ever confronted by the protagonist of the film- Elizabeth Bennett, one of the most well known female characters in English literature. The second daughter in the Bennett family, and the most intelligent and quick-witted, her admirable qualities are numerous- she is lovely, clever, and in a text defined by dialogue she converses as brilliantly as anyone. Her honesty, virtue and lively wit enable her to rise above the nonsense and bad behaviour that pervade her class-bound, spiteful society. Elizabeth's values reveal her as an individual against the society that is the backdrop to the film. Even in the midst of company Elizabeth seems solitary. Throughout the text Elizabeth demonstrates the ability to act in accord with society but does not let it dominate her.

The many reaction shots of Elizabeth smiling in private amusement imply her critical attitude to society. To her sister Jane, she states- 'The more I see of the world, the more I am dissatisfied with it'.

Afterwards Elizabeth reasons with Mr. Collins- "Do not consider me now as an elegant female intending to plague you, but as a rational creature speaking the truth from the heart".

When Elizabeth's friend Charlotte Lucas accepts a marriage proposal from Mr. Collins on the grounds of financial security, this again presents the differences between Elizabeth and society, marked by the advent of marriage.
Throughout the film the close-up shots of Elizabeth show her standing out against the background, apart from her community in moments of social withdrawal and silent disappointments.
In a world of first and lasting impressions, Elizabeth prevails to show that she doesn't care about social appearances. When her mother tells her that she will not be fit to be seen if she walks to see Jane, Elizabeth duly retorts that she will be fit to see JANE.
Lizzy has pride in her abilities to perceive the truth of situations and of people's characters. She is distressed when she realises that unchecked prejudice has clouded her understanding of Mr. Darcy. Lizzy cries-"How despicably I have acted!....I, who have prided myself on discernment!...Had I been in love, I could not have been more wretchedly blind."
With such a character of principle, Elizabeth not only knows what is right but is able to identify when she is wrong. The scenes showing her continually looking in the mirror show Elizabeth's desire to see the truth about herself and her feelings.
Nearing to the end of the film, looking out the window of Pemberley, Elizabeth smiles to herself- "Of all this I might have been mistress".
By this point, if not by any other, it is obvious that Elizabeth is concerned with propriety, good manners, and virtue, but is not impressed by mere wealth or titles.
