As soon as war broke out in 114, historians began to ask why and how it could possibly have happened. What had gone wrong? As the fighting spread and casualties mounted, the question became more urgent. To this day no one has come up with a definitive explanation. In the following text I will attempt to highlight the principle factors which contributed to the outbreak of the First World War. After studying these causes I shall then decide in my opinion which is the most significant factor.

The First World War broke out against a background of rivalry between the world's greatest powers. These powers were, Britain, Germany, France, Russia and the USA and to a lesser degree, Austria-Hungry, Italy, the Ottoman Empire and Japan. No single power was dominant. The US, for example, had the strongest economy. Britain the most powerful navy, and Germany the most effective army. From 1870 onwards, the powers formed alliances for greater security. The Triple Entente consisted of France, Britain and Russia. The Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. By 114 the US was the only power not connected to the international web of military agreements. While Germany itself was strong, its allies were not. Austria-Hungary was made up of 11 quarrelling nations including some, such as the Czechs, who wanted independence, while others, the Serbs for instance wanted union with neighbouring states. Germany's other ally, Italy, was extremely unreliable and was desperate not to go to war. Germany was concerned by this fact and so the tension between the empires grew.

Linking with this cause was the long-standing hostility between France and Germany. Germany had become a united country in 1871, when it defeated France in the Franco-Prussian War and took the territory of Alsace-Lorraine. Germany also felt threatened and surrounded by the members of the Triple Entente, with Britain and France to the west, and Russia to the east.

The period from about 1850 to 114 is often called the 'Age of Imperialism', when the great powers used their military and commercial might to seize less developed parts of the world and bring them into their empires. The larger the empire the more prosperity and prestige it brought to the country. It was extremely important, therefore, for an imperialist nation to protect and, if possible, expand its overseas possessions. This invariably led to conflict between rival powers. The British were obviously the superior imperialists. Their empire occupied one quarter of the world's land surface. Many other countries in Europe held colonies all over the world. Before the entente with France (104) and Russia (107), these powers had posed the greatest threat to the British Empire. By 100, however, things were changing. A major reason why Britain settled her differences with France and Russia was that there was a new and aggressive player on the imperial board Germany. During the Boer War in South Africa (18-10) the Germans supported the Boers against the British. The British regarded German imperialism as a direct threat to their own international position. They were further worried when the Germans announced a massive expansion of their navy.

Order custom research paper on What Caused the First World War to break out?Which factor in your opinion was the most important?

Following with a link to the above cause, the naval race played a considerable part in the lead up to the outbreak of the First World War. Britain led the naval race. In the 1880's she adopted the Two-Power Standard which said that the Royal Nay should be at least as large as any other two fleets combined. At the time, these were assumed to be France and Russia. When either of them laid down new ships, Britain laid down an equal number. The situation grew more complicated with the emergence of three new powers Japan, USA and Germany. As the Japanese and Americans were friendly powers, their naval expansion caused Britain few worries. On the other hand, the build up of the German navy was more responsible than anything else for a serious deterioration in Anglo-German relations before 114.

Yet another factor was the underlying tension between the Balkan states. Turkey had once ruled the Balkans. Turkey became very weak in the nineteenth century. Slav people living in the Balkans gradually drove out their hated Turkish rulers. New Slav nations Serbia, Rumania and Bulgaria were set up. Austria-Hungary wanted to control the Balkans, as it was afraid that Slavs living in Bosnia and other Balkan states within the Austro-Hungarian Empire would want to break away to join Serbia.

Russia desperately needed to use ports on the Mediterranean Sea. This would make trade easier. Russia also needed to be able to sail its war ships out of the Black Sea in times of trouble and so needed to control the Balkans. Russia felt that she was under obligation to support Serbian ambitions, as a fellow Slav state. She also hoped to use her connections with Serbia to gain influence on the Mediterranean coast.

To top this tension off Germany needed the Balkans to be friendly, as they wanted to run a railway through the Balkans. It was to link Berlin with the capital of Iraq, Baghdad as Germany needed the oil Iraq could provide to fuel its economic growth.

The rivalries and tension between these nations continued to grow and finally exploded following the assassination of the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungry, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife the Duchess who were shot dead by a Serbian nationalist on the 8th June 114 in Sarajevo in the Balkans. This was because there was a dispute between Austria-Hungary and Serbia about who should rule over the Serbs of Bosnia, the Balkans.

Linking the alliance system to this problem was the fact that Austria-Hungary decided to go to war against Serbia. Because of the system of European alliances, this conflict drew in several other countries. Serbia was allied with Russia. Germany was ready to fight alongside Austria-Hungary. Russia was prepared to go to war in support of Serbia. France and Britain decided to support Russia. Italy remained neutral in 114.

After studying all the contributing causes of the outbreak of the First World War, I have come to the personal conclusion that 'imperialism' was the principle factor. Although the immediate cause of the First World War appeared to be the assassination of the Austrian Archduke, Franz Ferdinand, this was merely a flash point for a conflict between the major powers, which had become increasingly inevitable.

The alliances forged between the various countries bound them to a course of action, which once triggered, could not be broken. National ambition and the need for supremacy by Germany, Russia, France and Britain determined their actions, when each considered that their vital interests were threatened. Old hatreds and fear fuelled the mistrust between the

opposing countries. War seemed at the time the only solution to resolve this situation and once begun, the remaining allies were drawn in on each side.

The Fourth of July

It is amazing that a political document written 7 years ago could cause such argument, confusion, and pride in its history and still have any value in today's society. The Declaration of Independence is just that document. The Declaration of Independence is a living document in the sense that its contents have been interpreted throughout America's history to provide freedom and meaning to life.

When America's forefathers sat down to write the Declaration of Independence they had no idea they were about to write something of such great importance. In fact John Adams stated that the Declaration was "dress and ornament rather than Body, Soul, or Substance,". What they had not realized was that this Declaration was going to be a "national icon" to set moral standards to forever to come. Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Benjamin Franklin finished the Declaration of Independence on July fourth, 1776, just two days after America declared it's independence from Britain. In July, 1777, congress had not thought of celebrating the Independence Day until it had already passed. In order to not let this great day be passed uncelebrated, they celebrated it on the day that the Declaration of Independence was approved and passed out to the new nation. As a result, America has the July fourth holiday.

The Declaration however, did not stimulate an immediate positive reaction from everybody. There was a lot of confusion for a long time about what the Declaration really meant. When blacks started asking for equal rights people argued with them that when the Declaration of Independence stated "all men are created equal" that this did not include blacks. For the most part this was true. Jefferson himself owned slaves during and after the writing of the great Declaration. People argued that equal creation was "a falsehood, and a most pernicious falsehood" and that "the principle, although lovely and beautiful, cannot obliterate those distinctions in society which society itself engenders and gives birth to." However, a man named Benjamin Franklin Wade was a strong opponent of slavery and persisted otherwise. The "great declaration cost our forefathers too dear" and it was "worth the sacrifice of all else on earth, even life itself". He also stated that "no man has a right to trample on another" and that all rights be "restored without delay." Lincoln, who had just served his first term in congress, believed that the Declaration "contemplated the progressive improvement in the condition of all men everywhere." Lincoln was going to fight for this belief.

Not only did the Declaration of Independence cause a lot of confusion to fresh Americans, but it also paved the way for many great changes that were yet to come. Americans started using the Declaration of Independence to "justify their quest for equality". Slavery was slowly starting to be abolished in some areas such as in New York and New Jersey, not surprisingly, on July fourth, 17 and 1804 respectively. The end of slavery was getting closer. On September , 186 Lincoln stated in his Emancipation Proclamation that "slaves within any State or designated part of a State the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free". Lincoln looked toward the Declaration for guidance and believed that the Declaration of Independence was the "father of all moral principles,". The addition of the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments into the U.S. Constitution by Lincoln's party provided a guarantee to the protection and rights of black people in America. Blacks now had their freedom. If the Declaration of Independence was never composed these changes certainly would not have come so soon, if at all.

As a whole, the Declaration of Independence has brought many great things upon this country. Through times of war, conflict and through celebration the Declaration has kept us not only sincere to ourselves and to our fellow Americans, but to people all over the world. The Declaration has inscribed in us all, a true sense of morals.

Sex Education Text Banned After Outcry

By Kadyr Toktogulov, Associated Press (November )

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan The birds and the bees do their thing in the mountains that fill this rugged Central Asian country, but the facts of life are off limits this year in Kyrgyz high schools. An ethnic Kyrgyz nationalist drummed up a public outcry against a new sex education book and pressured the government into withdrawing the text before school started in September. The book, a teachers guide titled Healthy Way of Life, also addressed subjects such as smoking and drugs. The author, Dr. Boris Shapiro, who heads an AIDS clinic in the capital, Bishkek, saw a need for frank advice for teenagers to slow the rapid spread of AIDS in this conservative former Soviet republic, where talk of sex in families is often taboo. The new texts most controversial elements are a series of cartoons displaying a man putting on a condom and a passage on masturbation.

Snow Day

"Hey there, it's another warm, sunny day!" This was the cheery message I heard from my radio as my alarm went off one Tuesday morning. Something was wrong, because I remembered there had been winter storm warnings the night before. It was then that I realized the station to which I was listening was broadcasting from California. I bolted to the window. Snow! I rushed to my television to look on a local CBS channel for school closings. There we were, Fort Smith Public Schools! This was our first (and very probable only) snow day of the year, and I intended to use it to its fullest.

The first thing I did that day, of course, was to get appropriately dressed for the day I was going to spend outdoors. As I was putting on my second layer of clothing, my brother, Kirby, burst into my room and announced, "We are out of school, bubba!" He went on to ask if I wanted to build a snowman and I told him I would help him later in the day. As I tied my shoes, I realized that I needed to get going and begin my fun before the snow melted.

I went outside and traversed through the snow to a hill behind my house, Dead Man's Hill. I met up with Ty Barnes and Ben Falkner. They were out sledding, and I went to join them. While I was sliding on the ice, I thought about how great this day was turning out to be.

Once my buddies and I finished sledding, I decided to go help Kirby with that snowman. I found him sitting in a chair anxiously waiting for me to come home and help him. When I opened the door, he was already pulling on his gloves. Once we were outside, I gave him some brotherly advice, "Kirby, don't eat the yellow snow." That being said, I started to roll up snow for the bottom of the snowman. Kirby jumped up and down shouting, "Bigger, bigger!" Once we were done building the snowman, we stood and marveled at our creation, taking pictures of it to preserve its memory.

Not surprisingly, my snow day turned out to be full of fun. I got to sleep late on a school day, I went sledding with my fiends, and I helped my little brother make a big snowman. That day was great, and I can't wait to have another one just like it!

"Every day three thousand kids become regular smokers, and a third of them will eventually die of nicotine-related causes." (http//www.nicotinevictims.com/observations.htm#000) Smoking is the leading cause of cancer in the United States and the rest of the world. Due to the studies of nicotine, doctors have been able to conclude that nicotine is the most addictive and most destructive legal drug today. If you smoke it would be a good idea to stop while you're not too far behind.

When people start smoking they get cravings to have something in their hands and mouth. At first they fill the need with cigarettes and eventually they are smoking a pack or two a day. During the first few months of smoking, the lungs turn brown and eventually black. The reason for this is the tar and nicotine mixture get into the lungs. The mixture sticks to the lining of the lungs, making it hard to breathe. Shortly after that, the lungs absorb the nicotine and tar into the body where cancer can easily form, and in many cases does. This process takes only a few weeks to several years. If you smoke for a long time, and you are old your lungs are probably black and full of tar and nicotine. However, your body will continue to absorb the cancer causing agents, and eventually your body's immune system will stop fighting it off and you will get cancer. This time your body is weak from trying to fight off the tar and nicotine. This makes it hard to fight off the cancer. As you go through life struggling with the cancer, and hoping that that day that you are living in, is not your last and hoping that you will get to see the ones you love the next day. For some this is not always the result. Every day one thousand people do not get to see their loved ones the next day. Some lucky people die at night peacefully, and other not so lucky people die in excruciating pain, others die because of suffocation. And for that person's family, they are in total shock and saddened by the loss of the one that they love and will no longer be able to see, only remember. But this doesn't have to be the result. You can change everything by stopping smoking. If you say it is too hard to stop smoking, it really is not hard.

Several people avoid this tragic and painful death. Kellie of Huntington Beach said, "When I get a craving to smoke, I remind myself that I don't smoke and, unless I want to go through this again, I won't smoke. This is a choice I made, no one is forcing me to do this and it is a positive choice for my benefit. It may be difficult, but I'm glad I don't smoke." The first thing you have to do if you want to avoid an early death is truly want to quit. This means that you have to literally convince your-self that quitting is best for you. Soon after that you are well on you way to quitting. On this web page it states, "Cigarettes.... One of the most addictive and destructive, over the counter drugs known to modern man. One of the few legal substances available in stores that can injure or kill when used as intended. Most rational people know this as a fact, yet many continue to smoke. Some smokers know, deep in their hearts, they want to quit. Others are quite content to keep on puffing because they think they enjoy it so much." When people convince themselves that smoking is a horrible thing and they don't want to do it any more then it becomes very easy to stop.

After you have convinced yourself it's time to stop then all you have left to do is fill the need to have something in your mouth and hands. People can acquire this by chewing on gum, pens, pencils, and straws. As you go through this you can still smoke some to satisfy your addiction to nicotine. If you smoke a pack a day, try to cut down your intake by three to five cigarettes a day. Eventually you will not need a cigarette, because you will not be addicted.

When you decide to stop smoking your life will become more energetic, and you will be able to see the ones you love a few years down the road. My grandfather died of lung cancer in 15. The Jim Crow South

Early in the 1th century the term Jim Crow referred to a minstrel show character created by white actor Thomas Dartmouth Daddy Rice. By the end of the 1th century the term began to be applied to laws and customs which oppressed African-Americans. The racial caste system overwhelmed Blacks with the harsh realities of dehumanization, stereotyping, and the segregation of daily life in the Jim Crow South. However, within the combined efforts of The Great Migration of the post war era, the work of organizations on the national level, as well as the effort of everyday African-Americans, an overall push from segregation to civil rights resulted.

For the vast majority of southern blacks, the horror of Jim Crow meant that they were forced to live behind a virtual veil. This created a psychological ploy in which blacks assumed the position of non-confrontation. As many whites refused to acknowledge the humanity of African-Americans, most blacks had to hide their true feelings and personalities in the presence of white people. Sometimes, this masking meant shuffling and feigning irresponsibility; sometimes, it meant turning the other cheek and walking away rather than responding to white insults. But almost always, it meant conforming to a pattern of racial etiquette in day-to-day affairs. Blacks avoided looking whites in the eyes and were expected to stare at the ground when addressing whites of both sexes. Black customers had to show deference to white customers while shopping. They were usually not permitted to try on clothing in white businesses, as it was commonly believed that white customers would not purchase clothes that black customers had tried on. Adult African Americans were seldom afforded titles of respect by whites, as described by Mr. Young, a black male whose account was recorded in "Remembering Jim Crow." "White men and women were addressed as Mr. and Mrs. You didn't address blacks that way." They were instead referred to by their first names or by the words boy, girl, auntie, uncle, and frequently, nigger. Most blacks fully understood that putting on the face in the presence of whites was one of the many tactics they used to survive.

African-Americans fought inner struggles over the humiliating image of blacks depicted in circuses, minstrel shows, song, and in the twentieth century, films and radio programs. In popular culture, black people were portrayed as lazy and silly bumpkins, high-strutting dandies who foolishly mimicked white elites, or simple-minded and contented darkies who simply loved their white patrons. Blacks had to ask themselves many questions how does one learn to live behind a veil or to put on a mask of deference and become a shadow? How does an individual grow to be self-respecting, promising person when acting this way around white people would lead to beatings, job discrimination, or even death? When did little African-American boys learn to never look at white girls or speak to them directly? How did they force themselves to behave one way in the presence of whites and yet step out from behind the veil when at home with family and friends? These are just a few of the hundreds of questions blacks dealt with the Jim Crow South.

Cheap University Papers on Jim Crow

Completing one's daily routine was but another degrading aspect of the life of an African-American in the beginnings of the 0th century. Within every waking moment Blacks were faced with dehumanizing laws that kept them as second- class citizens. In the film "Road to Brown," these elitist rules created two separate America's. Black America couldn't swear on white America's bibles, die in their hospitals, sip from the same water fountain, or even stand within a specified distance from the white populace. Within the documentary a victim of Jim Crow aptly stated, "you abide by those laws or you, [would] be hauled off to jail, that simple." Justice and equality was but a distant goal for African-American's living in this harsh segregation.

The threat of physical pain, public humiliation, and death held Jim Crow laws firmly in place. However, people did eventually begin to fight against the system. Immediate relief from this oppression was found in the flight of millions of African-Americans to the North, commonly known as The Great Migration. Much of the desire to flee the South and to resist segregation legally and politically resulted from the experience of African-American soldiers in World War I. African-American service-men were confronted with the realities of the military's own segregation despite their patriotic motives. A biographer in the documentary "Road to Brown," described the sentiment that ran through the ranks of black soldiers in that there was "…No sense dying for a world run by them." Why should these men fight for a democracy that in theory treated them as equals but in reality oppressed their race? No true democracy would result until the rights of African-Americans were placed back into their own hands. This American dissention was especially dangerous and important because of its un-American stance. Young black soldiers home from Europe found Jim Crow Laws especially grueling. Similar patterns occurred after World War II, when over a million and a half African Americans left the South. During this time there was no longer room for the passive African Americans, willing to accept the white man's cruelty. These enlightened individuals fought harder than ever to seek the "democracy" that they fought for overseas, but were denied in their homeland. As poignantly stated the film "Freedom Bags," "When the world told them they should be content; they continued to dream."

Efforts to disassemble the structure of Jim Crow Laws also began on a national level. Led by the NAACP, the labors of civil rights leaders and followers continued to grow. The NAACP worked vehemently under the leadership of Charles H. Houston and Thurgood Marshall to provide precedents in which to bring the demise of Jim Crow Segregation. These cases eventually led to the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling that enabled blacks throughout the country to have faith in the growing cause. Prior to these victories, success had only been viewed on a small scale and had never attracted such attention. The death of Jim Crow was not immediately observed after this ruling (Cook 85), but the victory was essential to the growth of the civil rights movement in the 160's. African-Americans desperately needed organizations, such as the NAACP, to take a leadership role against discrimination and lead them into a new era of change.

Although grass-roots activism had been present since the turn of the century, widespread participation of African-Americans was not observed until much later. This participation was viewed in the simple defiant protest and attempt of blacks to exercise their right to vote. For decades whites had successfully alienated blacks from one another to prevent a massive movement. But in victories such as Randolph's March on Washington, and through an increasing focus of the Liberal Branch of the Democratic Party on civil rights, blacks came to see their worth. A single united voice in the Jim Crow South was finally heard amongst the chorus of millions of other oppressed blacks.

Although the Jim Crow South lays dead and buried, this era is only a few decades in our past. The cruel reality of white and black relations, racial labels, and everyday life in this movement still aches in the hearts of millions. However, freedom is a reality for African Americans today, owing much to the victory in the brutal struggle of yesterday's freedom-fighters in the massive migration, the labors of national organizations, as well as the efforts of grass-roots activism.
