In Retrospect

By Robert S. McNamara

Vietnam had long since been a place of controversy, and where the American government focused its fear of communism for many years. Throughout the Kennedy and Johnson administrations the government maintained that the war between the Communist north and the south could have only been won by the South Vietnamese, and that US military could not have won it for them. It stressed that the fall of South Vietnam to communism would threaten the rest of the western world.

McNamaras book, In Retrospect The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam, begins with a dozen or so interesting but terse pages on the authors background; his schooling; his meeting, and marriage to, Margaret McKinstry Craig, to whose memory the book is dedicated; his wartime service as an air corps statistical control officer; and his postwar service with the Ford Motor Company. He had been president of that company for only seven weeks when John Kennedy made him Secretary of Defense in 161. The problems of Vietnam from 161 to early 168 occupy virtually the rest of the book. Although the war lasted some eight more years, the story ends with McNamaras transition to the World Bank in 168, as the Tet offensive begins.

In the period 165-67, Robert McNamara came to believe that Vietnam was a problem with no solution. This is the theme of his book. His frustration arose because the war was fought under five rules, which, as he saw it, proved incompatible with victory. These rules were (1) that Southeast Asia as a whole must be kept from communist control; () that US troops should not be sent outside the borders of South Vietnam; () that the South Vietnamese should achieve political stability and--with US tutelage and military aid--learn to defend themselves; (4) that the United States under no circumstances should initiate the use of nuclear weapons; and (5) that the enemy operated under the assumption that it could win a long inconclusive war. In the face of these rules, McNamara came to believe that the United States should withdraw from Vietnam, because Rule proved impossible of attainment, and the costs of withdrawal (Rule 1) would be tolerable. To a degree impossible to determine, his conclusion, by his own account, was influenced also by the anti-war sentiment in the country which extended to his immediate family.

Robert McNamara wrote In Retrospect because he wanted to "Put Vietnam in context,"(xx). McNamara wanted to explain why the mistakes of Vietnam were made, not to justify them, but to help the American public understand them. He relies not only upon his memories, but upon the record whenever possible. People have often called Vietnam, McNamara's war, because he made it his responsibility. As he learned more and more about South Vietnam, he became well acquainted with its leader Ngo Dinh Diem. Diem portrayed himself as a man who shared western values. Though as government would soon realize he was not the man they had hoped for. Diem needed to be removed from power; he was becoming more and more unpopular with his people. The Kennedy Administration seemed split on how democratic Diem really was. His conflicts between the Buddhists and Catholics were becoming more outrageous than ever. The administration supported a general's coup to get Diem out of power. Diem and his brother Nhu were both assassinated during this coup.

On November , 16, Kennedy, himself, was assassinated on the streets of Dallas. McNamara poses many questions as to whether the war would have continued on the same route had Kennedy not been killed. McNamara feels that had Kennedy lived he would have pulled the US out of Vietnam. His reasoning was that Kennedy had told his cabinet "We are not going to bungle into war." Kennedy was ready to start pulling the troops out because it was obvious that the war was impossible to win.

Lyndon B. Johnson then becomes president. Many debates were being held on what to do in regards to Vietnam. After Diem's death, the Johnson Administration faced political problems in Saigon. The demands for U.S. military actions were growing. On August , 164, North Vietnam launched an attack against an American ship in the Gulf of Tonkin. A second attack was supposed to have taken place on August fourth, but McNamara has now concluded that the second attack never happened. Using the Gulf of Tonkin event to his advantage Johnson went to congress. The Gulf of Tonkin resolution gave the president the broad war powers. Meanwhile this resolution had been based on an attack that might well have never taken place.

McNamara discusses whether the Gulf of Tonkin resolution gave too much unlimited power to the president. He does not feel that the Congress understood what was happening in Vietnam or how the Johnson administration would respond to it. Though he never answers his own question as to whether the administration was given too much leniency when it came to its actions in Vietnam, it seems as if the Congress was misled on all the facts pertaining to the Gulf of Tonkin. After the Gulf of Tonkin, U.S. military troops were increased in Vietnam from ,000 to 175,000. McNamara in hindsight looks back and wonders, why? Why did they escalate and not withdraw? South Vietnam seemed like a lost cause. Their leaders were fighting among themselves and yet we continued to fight on their behalf. He believes that the US could have withdrawn without any negative affects on the country. Was there another way to stop these injustices? McNamara feels that all other resources were not exhausted before they ventured into a war that they had little hope of winning. The government overestimated the fall of South Vietnam. Would it really have threatened the rest of the western world? Probably not.

At the end of the book McNamara attributed the failure of the war to eleven major causes, including poor organization, lack of understanding of the enemy and its culture, and a decision made in the Presidents office to withhold information from the Congress of the United States and the American public. He blamed both himself and other government officials, including President Johnson, for not engaging in more detailed debate that might have illuminated the problems surrounding the war. The book generated controversy, with many people questioning why McNamara waited three decades to speak out against the war. There are also eight pages of reflection on post-Cold War military policy and a final word on Vietnam, the heart of which is

Although we sought to do the right thing--and believed we were doing the right thing--in my judgment, hindsight proves us wrong. We both overestimated the effect of South Vietnams loss on the security of the West and failed to adhere to the fundamental principle that, in the final analysis, if the South Vietnamese were to be saved, they had to win the war themselves.

When McNamara left the state department he had realized that the U.S. "could not achieve their objectives in Vietnam." In the last few months of his term he came to the conclusion that continuing on the present course would eventually prove fatal and cost many of innocent lives. Johnson did not agree so he purposely left McNamara's views out of discussions regarding the next course of action. What they needed was a rapid end to this war, and he felt that the bombing and the expansion of the ground war would not do the job. He proposed a list of alternatives such as stopping the bombing of the north to bring about negotiations, transferring the responsibility from our military to the South Vietnamese. Although he made his contentions well-known to the president, the president was not ready to hear him. His last deed in regards to Vietnam was to oppose General Westmoreland's petition for 00,000 supplementary troops.

McNamara's reasoning behind this book was to tell the American people what went on behind the scenes during the Vietnam War. Many critics of the Vietnam War feel that it was the inexperience of the state department, though they were extremely intelligent, they were not trained in the finer workings of the military which caused the escalation. There were several times when the US could have pulled out of Vietnam, but they thought that it would cause the United States to lose rank with the rest of the world. Both Administrations, I feel, overstated the threat that if South Vietnam fell to communism, then the rest of the east would fall like a line of dominoes.

One returns to the wild card in this story the manner in which the United States, including McNamaras own family, was driven into painful controversy over the war. And that is a part of the equation that all Americans must weigh for themselves. In fact, only McNamara can weigh all the factors which have driven him into the position that, whatever the cost, the United States should have withdrawn its troops from Vietnam. McNamara summed up a lot of misconceptions of what really happened, he comes right out and honestly says "We were wrong, terribly wrong." The book makes a lot of valid points though it is hard to follow at times. In Retrospect has allowed me to become painfully aware of a war that I knew relatively little about. This book shows reasons as to why, right or wrong, the US intervened in Vietnam, and why the US should have withdrawn sooner than it did.

Guitars have been a prominent instrument in the American culture, originating in the 1500's in Spain. Though guitars have been used throughout American history many people do not know how the acoustic guitar works. Though it looks like a simple instrument, casual research reveals that it is much more complex than it looks. Guitars are a complex instrument that has evolved greatly since its beginnings.

Looking at a guitar, one would think that when a person strums a string, the vibrations from the string results in sound waves that are heard. However that is not true. A sound wave is basically a disturbance of the air, however a string by itself doesn't disturb the air much, resulting in little sound. The guitar is much more complex than the string.

To get a clear understanding of how an acoustic guitar works, knowledge of the parts of the guitar is necessary. At the top of the guitar is the head, which houses the tuning pegs. Turning the tuning pegs changes the pitch of the guitar. Then is the neck, which is the long part that connects the head to the main part, body, of the guitar. On the neck is the fret board which contains the frets. Frets are metal pieces in the fret board which, when pushed, alters the tone and length of the note. Then comes the body of the guitar, which is where the important parts are. The top part of the body is called the soundboard. This is the most important part of the guitar. On the soundboard is a hole called the soundhole, which is, obviously, where the sound comes out. Attached to the soundboard is a piece called the bridge which is the anchor for one end of the strings. The bridge also has a thin piece embedded in it which is where the strings rest.

Once the pieces of the guitar are understood, it is then possible to understand the basics of how an acoustic guitar actually works. The sound heard starts from the strumming of the strings. The vibrations travel down the strings, down through the saddle and bridge to the soundboard. This causes the entire soundboard to vibrate. The body of the guitar then makes a hollow sound box that amplifies the vibrations of the soundboard. This is what makes a guitar able to be heard, because it causes a big enough disturbance in the air to create sound waves. If a tuning fork was touched to the soundboard it can be proven that the vibrations of the soundboard cause the sound.

For a story to be a tragedy it has to follow the principles set

by Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, or those of Arthur Miller

who is a twentieth century playwright. A tragedy, in Aristotles

view, usually concerns the fall of an individual whose character is

Buy Death of a Salesman term paper

good but not perfect and his misfortunes are brought about by the

tragic flaw. This flaw is the part of the character that personifies

him as being tragic. Miller uses this definition of a tragedy but

also broadens it to include the common man. All of these

characteristics are seen in the plays Julius Caesar, Death of a

Salesman, and Oedipus Rex.

Although the title of the play Julius Caesar focuses on

Caesar, the play itself is really based on Brutus. Brutus had

rather be a villager than to repute himself a son of Rome.(Act I,

scene II, line 17). This was said by Brutus after Cassius told him

how Caesar had become a towering figure over Rome and how

Caesar controls Rome. Notice the good in Brutus, and the

extremes he will go to in order to protect democracy in Rome

even if it means killing the one he loves, Caesar. Brutus possesses

one of the most tragic flaws. He is too nice of a person and

therefore he gets taken advantage of. He lets Cassius persuade

him into killing Caesar for the good of Rome. Because he does

for others more than himself he makes a fatal mistake, he lets

Antony live. Brutus says to the conspirators, For Antony is but a

limb of Caesar(Act II scene I line 165) meaning that if Caesar is

killed Antony will die off too. Brutus clearly does not regard

Antony as being a threat, but little does Brutus know that

Antony will stir up the town to seek revenge after the

assassination of Caesar. This mistake will cost him his own life.

When he dies he becomes a prime example of tragedy because not

only did he bring about his own death he dies by his own hand.

In Death of a Salesman, Willy Lowmans tragic flaw is that

he is a dreamer who is unable to face the realities of

a modern day society. Willy builds his whole life around the

philosophy that if a person is well liked and good looking then

he will be successful. Willy says to Biff , I thank Almighty God

that you are both are built like Adonises.(Act I page ) Later,

Willy makes the comment, Be liked and you will never

want.(Act I page ) His need to be well liked is so strong that

he often lies about his success; at times he even believes his own

lies. Willy always thinks his sons will always be successful

because they are good looking and good at sports, but in reality

they are failures just like Willy. At the end when Biff tries to tell

Willy that he is just a commoner and that he cannot live up to his

fathers expectations, that they are a dime a dozen. Willy thinks

he is just saying this to spite him. Willy says, I am not a dime a

dozen! I am Willy Loman and you are Biff Loman!(act II page

1). After this Willy decides to commit suicide so Biff can get

the twenty thousand dollar insurance money and he will finally

make something of himself. He had the wrong dreams(requiem

page 18) states Biff at Willys funeral, but Charley, Willys best

friend, says A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the

territory.(requiem page 18) Unfortunately, Willy never realized

that his dreams and values were flawed and he died for it.

In Oedipus Rex Oedipus has a flaw that is unavoidable and

also uncontrollable. His flaw is fate. The plot juxtaposes

Oedipuss ignorance to his own identity with his tragic despair as

he learns that he has killed his father and married his mother.

Oedipus refuses to believe all of the prophecies until his prophet

finally discloses the truth. He knows that he is the one who

killed his father because he is the one who murdered Laius who

in fact turned out to be his father that tried to get rid of him.

After his wife, Jocasta, finds out that Oedipus knows the truth she

commits suicide. How could I bear to see when all my sight was

horror everywhere?(ode 4 line 18) This is said after Oedipus

punishes himself by digging his eyes out. Oedipus then wanders

the land a beggar guided by his daughter, Antigone.

Clearly, then, all of these stories represent a great example

of tragedy. They follow the rules preset by Aristotle and also the

rules of Arthur Miller. We have sympathy for the protagonist in

each play but at the same time we know that their down fall is

brought about by their own ignorance. Even though the character

is tragic he is also a great man because they suffer for the well

being of others.

The theory of Evolution says that at the very beginning of life were plankton. Those plankton evolved and became more and more complex organisms. Depending on their environment and choices, the organisms that were created were different in their (physical) appearance and behavior. Now, the Earth has a very diversified fauna and flora living in their respective biosphere. All the living species are classified according to their physical traits and behavior. However, one specie present differences among their group the Human Being. In fact, Humans are easily recognizable at least physically, but since they have something more that makes them more complex to study- the ability to think- they present difficulties to be assimilated as a homogeneous group. Since each human being has a unique character, do not expect them to behave the same way in front of a same situation. Therefore, a deep study into the causes that may influence their choice must be much more interesting and helpful in order to understand that behavioral difference. Then, the right question one must ask is What makes people behave differently? To find answers to this dilemma, in this essay will be analyzed successively three important reasons or factors that may lead people to behave in a way or another the influence of the environment, of the people around and of the experience.

First, the most common source of learning for an individual is his immediate and natural environment. By that is meant his culture, his religion or civilization. It is well known that people of the same culture share many things in common such as lifestyle and general behavior. You are more likely to find people doing similar things in a same area or culture. The way people behave in Africa will not be the same as for the ones in Asia, not that there is only one culture characteristic to those places. When the first colonists came to Africa, they were astonished by the way people were behaving. They deduced that those people were primitives. They thought those people who were behaving differently did not know any better. These people tended to impose their own value system on others, knowing that they were right and these other people were confused. They believed the way they behaved was natural and normal and the way other people behave, if it was different, was wrong and misguided. What they did not get was that those people were living according to their own systems and culture. Many people died, trying to preserve what they believed in, under the righteousness of those colonists. Also, the example of the businessmen is evocative. Before going in a new country, they study the culture of that country. What for, one might be wondering? Well, since the cultures are different from one place to another, you do not want to screw the business up by saying or doing stuffs that might be interpreted as offenses by the other party. To know the "Do?and ?Don't? it might be wise and smart to study the culture you are going to meet. Today, the best way culture is spread is through the media. We can say that children are TV-educated. That is their culture. But uncontrolled media can lead to great catastrophes. Who does not remember terrible events like the most famous "media-bashing?cases; Marilyn Manson and the video game Quake having motivated the Columbine shooters; an Eminem wanna-be who beat the crap out of his wife; TV wrestling inspiring kids to break each other's bones; a school shooting inspired by a Pearl Jam song; many past cartoons, movies and musical artists that pushed the edge of the envelope. Remember the violence of "Looney Tunes?cartoons, and the scary Wizard of Oz, or the Beatles song Run For Your Life,?which features a line that states "I'd rather see you dead little girl/than to see you with another man.?Those examples well illustrate the influence of culture on one's behavior.

Next, another great influence on people's behavior is people themselves. Generally it is what is known as Peer Pressure. You might have been taking Philosophy at school and, then, being introduced to subjects as various as the Human being's Behavior. As far as I am concerned, I have. I used to hear my instructor saying "To be autonomous means to act in accord with one's selfit means feeling free and volitional in one's actions. When autonomous, people are fully willing to do what they are doing, and they embrace the activity with a sense of interest and commitment. Their actions emanate from their true sense of self, so they are being authentic. In contrast, to be controlled means to act because one is being pressured. When controlled, people act without a sense of personal endorsement. Their behavior is not an expression of the self, for the self has been subjugated to the controls. In this condition, people can reasonably be described as alienated.?Then, I asked myself ?do human beings behave differently when they know they're being watched??My suspicion has always been a self-assured "not necessarily.?By going through life, I started to see clear. A good example of people influence on one is the text "Shooting an Elephant? In this text, George Orwell, while serving with the imperial police in Burma was called one day to deal with an elephant that went crazy. He shot the elephant because that was what the Burmese that called for his help were expecting him to do. So, those people, not his free will, influenced his behavior. To me, this text well illustrates the weakness of human beings. In fact, we are all doing things that we are expected to do. Sometime, our actions are ducted, influenced by the mass. This man, George Orwell, may be seen here as a puppet directed by the mass. Also, his fear to be seen as a coward leads him to act this way. He knew he was an occidental man and he acted the way he thought another occidental man would be acting. Here, we can only agree on how people, by their expectations, influence one's choices.

Last, but not least of the three, the experience plays a non-negligible role in one's behavior. It is well known that older people have more experience than the youth ness. Old people, through decades have experienced a lot of situations in life. The way you see them facing situations may seem foolish, they face it, usually, with a technical approach. It is not with surprise that we see them dealing with success. Young people are known for their inexperience. Usually, due to their inexperience, they fail or take more time solving a problem. However, that does not mean that old age only have the absolute exclusivity of the experience. In Africa, there is a truth saying "The wisdom does not wait for the number of year.?That means you can be young and be wiser than someone older than you are. Trevor gives a good example in the movie Pay it Forward. He might be only 1 years old and no one was expecting something special from him other than stuffs a young boy of his age does. But by thinking and applying his movement, he behaves an unexpected way. No one was expected him to come up with such an idea. He made then the difference. Also more interesting about generation and behavior is that their behavior changes while their ages grow. Usually older people are seen as crazy because they do not act "rationally.?What people do not understand is that their behavior is influenced by their age. In the text "Pigeon Women,?May Swenson describes old age; it's perception by others, its difficulties, and an old woman's need for love and care. This is primarily a poem that describes through the use of imagery and illustrates to us readers the effects of old age in the perception of other people, and the ole person as well. Aside from the important theme of old age and trying to defy it, Swenson also tells us of the difficulties that an old- aged woman experiences, how her everyday life seemed to be almost always a routine, how, for a woman of old age, life has been gentle or hard for her. Through the use of strong imagery, symbolism, contrasts, metaphors, alliterations, and internal rhymes, the author of this paper will discuss the themes of old age and coping and living with old age, and the Pigeon Womans need for love and care in May Swensons poem, Pigeon Woman.

To conclude, in this essay have analyzed three important factors that influence people's choices and behavior the environment, through the civilization or culture; people, through the Peer Pressure; and then, the experience and the age. There might be many more factors but those three constitute the most common ones. Today, more than ever, we all need to accept to live in the difference. Try to imagine a world where everybody looks and thinks alike? That makes non-sense and looks scary. Also, that is what makes us human we all live to make the difference, but to make that difference, we must accept the difference between us.

The Manhattan Project

In 1, the Nazis were rumored to be developing an atomic bomb. The United States initiated its own program under the Army Corps of Engineers in June 14. America needed to build an atomic weapon before Germany or Japan did.

General Leslie R. Groves, Deputy Chief of Construction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was appointed to direct this top-secret project. He established three large engineering and production centers at remote U.S. sites the Clinton Engineer Works at Oak Ridge, Tenn.; the Hanford Engineer Works in eastern Washington State; and Project Y, a code-named site 100 miles north of Albuquerque at Los Alamos, N.M.

Meanwhile, experiments in a small laboratory beneath the University of Chicagos abandoned Stagg Field were expanding understanding of atomic theory. The first controlled nuclear reaction occurred under Stagg Field. Italian physicist Enrico Fermi managed the University of Chicago reactor, called Chicago Pile 1 (CP-1). Nobel Prize-winner Fermi had fled Fascist Europe. On the afternoon of December , 14, it happened. Under the abandoned west stands of Stagg Field, the first controlled nuclear reaction occurred. Humankind had controlled energy released from the nucleus of the atom. CP-1 paved the way for Oak Ridge and Hanford to develop ways of obtaining nuclear fuel for atomic weapons.Help with essay on Manhattan Project

Scientists now had to create the fuel for an atomic bomb. The Oak Ridge facility separated the nuclear fuel U-5 from U-8, natural uranium. Since scientists needed to find fuel for the reactors, meant using uranium (U-5) or plutonium (Pu-8), the only suitable substances know by 14. Project leaders did not know how quickly or how much of each they could produce, so they decided to produce both at the same time. There were three methods that existed for extracting U-5, An electromagnetic process, gaseous diffusion and thermal diffusion. Oak Ridge crews built a plant for each method. The electromagnetic process at the facility, called Y-1, was the most promising. The process of extracting U-5 from natural uranium started at the Clinton Engineer Works, 0 miles west of Knoxville, TN. Work began on the plant in 14. In 14, the facility name was changed to Oak Ridge. This Appalachian site spanned 5,000 acres of wilderness and farmland. More than 1,000 rural families were relocated from their farms due to Oak Ridge.

The Hanford Engineer Works produced plutonium. The search for this location included sites along the Colorado and Columbia Rivers in California, Oregon, and Washington. The isolated 500,000-acre Hanford site offered security for sensitive operations. Large quantities of electricity and cooling water (at least 5,000 gallons per minute) were available and a mild climate allowed year-round work.

The facility encompassed three small towns -- Hanford, White Bluffs, and Richland--and bordered the Columbia River. Sheep had grazed the flat, rocky countryside, which was dotted with orchards, vineyards, and farms. To build the facility, the townships of Richland, White Bluffs, and Hanford vanished. As at Oak Ridge, 1,500 people were relocated in the process. Close to a half-million acres were purchased for more than $5.1 million by the spring of 14. The new facility was named Hanford Engineer Works after the riverside village.

Theoretical physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer (104-167), who also directed Los Alamos research, identified top scientists and engineers from universities nationwide. In November 14, General Groves and Oppenheimer chose the site where the first atomic bombs were designed and built. The site at Los Alamos, N.M. had been a boys school and Oppenheimer had visited it in the 10s.

At Los Alamos, an international team of scientists and engineers labored around the clock to create the first atomic weapons. For its remote location and existing school buildings, it helped make Los Alamos the perfect choice for a research and development site. The owners of the school were willing to sell it to the military for $440,000, since they were having problems obtaining and keeping qualified teachers during the war. By March 14, Los Alamos had became an intellectual boomtown. Known as the hill, Los Alamos produced two bombs. One, nicknamed Little Boy, was a gun-type weapon that used U-5. A slug of U-5 would be projected down a gun barrel into the center of another piece of U-5. When combined, a nuclear explosion would occur. The second bomb, Fat Man, used implosion to detonate plutonium. Here, explosives would surround the plutonium ball. When detonated, they would compress the plutonium, causing a nuclear explosion.

I Never

The time I "paid too much for the whistle" was an attempt to get attention and to be well liked by the senior Accents. We were asked to play a game called "I never". We were supposed to go around a circle and say something that we had never done before and if someone had then she was to put one finger down. Well I put my finger down on something that I definitely could have kept to myself. This statement caused a little uneasiness with my boyfriend and best friends. I told what most people consider juicy gossip. Well, it is not as much fun when I am the one being talked about.

Rumors spread very fast in high school, especially among tenth grade girls. What I practically blurted out was not a very big deal but now, two days later, it is. A variety of people are starting to ask me "Hey I heard you…" and these people will say something totally wrong. Not only are people asking and talking about me but, they are trying to discuss it with my boyfriend. This is the point where giving him the sad, "I am so sorry" face does not work.

I can say that I am getting a little more attention from the older girls though. I guess being well liked by these girls is important because I look up to them so much. Maybe I was thinking that I might be put on the front row of a dance if they like me. I understand now that this is most likely not going to happen. I also realize that it is way more important to keep from saying something that might hurt my friends' feelings. Friendships can last forever but popularity might not.

Before the "I never" game started, I had a pretty good reputation. I really did like being known as a good girl or a goody- goody. To me, that is kind of like a compliment. Now, people are probably not going to say that about me because tenth graders always believe gossip. I always felt proud when my guy friends would joke with me because I am such a "good girl". I am probably not going to get that kind of attention anymore.

I learned a couple of lessons from playing this game. I learned that popularity is not everything. Also, that I need to think before I say something. I learned how it feels to be gossiped about and that I really should not be doing that either. There is a reason for everything and I guess my reasons were to learn these lessons.
