Black Beauty

Black Beauty was written by the British author Anna Sewell (18O¡ª¡ª1878). It was finished in 1877 and it was her only book. Because of an injury in her childhood, she became invalid and had to rely on a carriage drawn by horse for transportation. With the help of horses in her childhood, she had a strong love for them and also had a strong will to let out the true lives of them in order to expose the how cruelly the human beings treat their animal friends.(1)

This novel was written in first person style about the whole life with twists and turns of a horse ---- Black Beauty. He is born in a large pleasant meadow of a fazenda and he is taught to be gentle and good by his mother. His parents both have a great name in good temper, so he learns manners from childhood ------ he never even kicks or bites in play. As his owner of that fazenda is a good and kind man, he has a happy time. It has all gone, however, since he grows up. He is sold from one owner to another and each owner seems to have a worse temper. From a horse of a gentleman to a coolie horse, he experiences a lot. He finally knows how hard to be a horse and how cruel the humans are.

As a horse Black Beauty doesn¡¯t have a real freedom, he has to wear a saddle and a bridle even wear a collar, a crupper, and a breeching. Even he has a kind owner, still he cannot escape the destine that he is only a horse. He has to be broken in ----- that means he has to be taught what a horse should wear and to obey his owner. So from the beginning, we suffer what he suffers and we enjoy we he enjoys. Also there is a fear in Black Beauty towards his future, especially when a new owner appears. He will wonder Will he be as kind as his first owner? or will he be as stupid or cruel as his former owner. Facing the fatuity and barbarity of human being, Black Beauty feels helpless and he cannot even escape from this. In his childhood, the first time for him to see the death is in a hunt, when a horse dies, it is just for hunting for hares. And even in the near future, he gets to know that the dead horse is his unknown brother. What a sad scene, as I have read here. Also it is his first time to know that humans are also cruel even the joy of humans are based on the death of animals.

There are also horses of bad tempers, however, for Black Beauty these horses are even better than humans, because some owners are so stupid that they vent on the horses when they cannot do things right. So no matter how good a horse is, it cannot get the candid treatment. So that is the problem that Anna Sewell opposes. The author gives the horse speaking ability to express her will for animals.

The author was a animal lover especially horses which accompanies with her for nearly a whole life, so she spent about 8 years finishing this book even when she was ill in bed. Unfortunately, she died soon after the book was published. So this book emphasizes on humanity. Therefore, it influences the readers from generation to generation and is well-known. There have been many great books, which have been made into movies. The Odyssey, an epic written by Homer, has been made into a movie depicting the book, but the movies are not always accurate to the books. Some movies might have some important details missing from the adventures and these details can sometimes change the whole original story. In the odyssey there are many bits and pieces separating the book and movie.

In the book after the Battle of Troy Odysseus and his men sail to the island of the Lotus Eaters, where they stay for a little while. The Lotus Eaters treat them well and offer them food and drink. The Lotus-eaters offer them the rare and unusual flower called lotus and Odysseus's men accept the lotus, and eat it thinking that it is food, but it turns out that the Lotus causes memory loss. In puts them into a trance where they have no cares. Odysseus's men are forced off the island by the others and put back on the ship. His men were then put in to a stage of sorrow because they had to leave the Lotus Eaters. After sailing off the island of the Lotus Eaters they come upon the Land of the Cyclops, where they also face many trials and tribulations. When Odysseus and his men enter the Land of the Cyclops they enter the cave of Polytheimus and find food and drink. They help themselves to everything, but they do not know what is going to befall them when Polytheimus enters. When Polytheimus enters his cave Odysseus and his men hide in the corner of the cave behind the sheep, but they do get noticed by Polytheimus. Polytheimus asks Odysseus for his name and Odysseus replies back saying his name is no man. Polytheimus holds them prisoners in his cave but Odysseus comes up with an idea. Odysseus gets Polytheimus drunk and then attacks him with a spear in the eye and then they escape from Polytheimus's cave. When Odysseus and his men are on the boat Odysseus taunts Polytheimus and for those words he hurls two huge boulders at the ship, and they both barely miss.Help with essay on the oddysey

Everything seems right in the movie, but instead of going straight to the island of the Lotus Eaters Odysseus and his men travel straight to the Land of the Cyclops after the battle of Troy. When Odysseus and his men are in the cave of Polytheimus, they do not hide in the movie. Instead they stand grazing up at the mighty Cyclops and when Polytheimus asks Odysseus for his name Odysseus said his name nobody instead of no man. After they escape in the book Polytheimus hurls two rocks at Odysseus's ship, but in the movie he throws only one.

After Odysseus loses all his men in the movie he comes upon Calypso's Island. Odysseus ends up spending two years on the island and he shares love with Calypso for those two years, but after two years Zeus forces Calypso to let Odysseus go. Also in the movie Telemachus becomes destined to find his father so he sets sail in search of his father and he first goes to Sparta to have some questions answered about his father.

There are also many differences in these parts of the movie as well. After he loses his men everything seems all right, but Odysseus never falls upon Calypso's Island in the book. He never spends two years there nor does he make love to Calypso. Telemachus is very anxious about his father, but he never goes to Sparta to get answers about his father.

Often books and movies are often thought as being the same, but there can be many major differences. In the Odyssey there is places unmentioned in the movie, but there are extra things that are never mentioned in the book. The movie changes thoughts about the book and it can also changes some of the plot and setting as well. On it are letters written in black and in size eighteen font with about four words and the telephone number in bold. On the pictures are words written in bold and normal type with twenty-four font in white.

The use of pictures and icons in adverting serve to persuade the consumer to open that particular piece of junk mail. There are two pictures on the back of the envelope. On the left, there is a mother and her two young children, a boy and a girl, in a car. The mother has a smile on her face and looks as if she is thinking about something. The children are playing in the back. On the right side, the picture shows the same family on Dumbo at Disneyland. They are laughing and you can tell that they are having a good time. "Dulce et Decorum Est"

Looking back now, we can all recognise that The Great War was nothing but an "ecstasy of fumbling", from the drawing board to the battlefield, but nearly a century on has anything changed? Is asymmetric warfare as sanitised as we may be lead to believe, or is it all a cover up for a more sinister truth, like that which is depicted in Wilfred Owen's poem "Dulce Et Decorum Est"?

With every line Owen puts me further into the role of the foot soldier on the battlefield, describing his very own experiences, to potent effect. He depicts the horror when a platoon is gassed, in a surprise attack.

The structure of the poem goes a long way to create this realism, which is responsible for incurring such vivid images. The poem is set into four verses, each structured to encapsulate an image of the exact moment in your mind. From the first verse, it's slow pace, as the soldiers "limp on ..with fatigue." To the sudden change of pace as, in "an ecstasy of fumbling" the "outstripped five-nines" drop down on the unsuspecting soldiers, in verse two. However, the third verse is perhaps the most important as in just two lines we hear a young soldier "guttering, choking, drowning", dying on the page in front of us. In the fourth verse we see the final scene, after they have flung the young soldier into the "wagon", Owen turns to the reader, in second person, and laments his final thought to the reader, cursing anyone who ever dared to say "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori".

With every word Owen draws me further into the belief, that I am there; watching my friends die, for something they know nothing about; for their country. Owen uses his particular literary techniques, to make the rhythm and rhyme go hand in hand. Owen calls upon the use of assonance and half rhyme to depict the pathetic rhythm of the men's march. As the men "curse through sludge...began to trudge...limp, on bloodshod", the sound of every heavy footstep, the panting, the slosh of the mud almost sounds out of the page. The rhythm remains; like the battle; long, slow and dull. Even in the "ecstasy of fumbling...yelling out and stumbling", and Owen's dramatic speech at the end of the poem, still the fatigue sets the dark, depressing rhythm. Making the soldier and reader think alike, and wonder why.

Wilfred Owen's poem is suffused with the horror of battle, and yet finely structured and innovative. Owens use of half-rhyme gives his poetry a dissonant, disturbing quality that amplifies his themes.

As we sip our tea and watch the evening news on the "box", we could be forgiven for forgetting that there is a war on. All we see are blip's in computer crosshairs, as a multi-billion pound coalition force "neutralises the threat". In places where the macabre realities of trench warfare are seemingly forgotten, the worst crime is that the guerrillas and generals alike will forever still spout out the old lie "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori."

Being able to grow up and allow myself to care for everyone I meet and want to be a friend to so many despite their diversity, their status, and their physical features. Through my ability to care for others I was able to meet so many loving people at Cedar Brook Nursing Home, where I volunteered for three summers. It allowed me to join Leo Club and be a help to my community by serving them. It's helped me through life to develop friendships that have lasted through ten years. It has helped me be a good sister to both my two older brothers by being there for them through there hard times and experiences.

My characteristics that I value the most though are my strength, motivation, and determination. These three characteristics have helped me achieve so much, when people told me it couldn't me done these three have pushed me to my limits. To lead my peers in helping there community, to work hard and purchase my own car, clothes and entertainment while saving for my future education. My dad showed me the way to these by insuring me that whatever I put my mind too I will achieve it.

She decides to run away. It is on this journey that Hagar starts to understand herself and come alive. She pours her heart out to an old drunk and in doing so has a realization about who she is. This is the first step towards her journey of self acceptance and the softening of her heart. Later, just before she dies, she makes a sort of peace with Marvin and dies reaching for a glass of water. This symbolizes her state of true life before her death.
