This small pile of sand provides the stability the pioneer species (the first species) need to grow. Pioneer species generally include marram grass, lyme grass, and sea couch grass. As these species begin to grow more sand is collected, further increasing the height of the dune. The first dune to be established is known as the embryo dune. Over time the dunes move inland and new dunes develop in front of them. The dunes move due to erosion on their seaside and deposition on their landside. However, at a certain point the dunes begin to decline in height as you move further inland; this occurs due to the fact that the sand supply is cut off as the taller dunes in front block the supply. These dunes are known as wasting dunes and generally include blowouts and slacks (See Figure ). A psammosere succession can be illustrated and studied by taking a transect along coastal dunes.
