Synopsis

In the article "First cloned human embryo is ready to implant in surrogate mother, scientist claims," is the issue regarding the cloning of human beings.

Panyiolis Zavos, a fertility expert at the University of Kentucky, claims to have made the worlds first cloned human embryo. He created hybrid embryos by putting DNA into "emptied" cows' eggs, insisting this was not done in poor taste but as a scientific model for future human cloning efforts. He joins a group, Severino Antinori and the Raelian cult, who have claimed to have made human embryos but these claims have not been verified. Dr. Zavos claims to have created the cloned embryo with cells taken from a woman, then attempting to transfer or implant but due to complications with the surrogate, this was postponed. The embryo was then frozen, as is commonly done with embryos for test tube babies.

Since the U.S. and Europe outlaw human cloning for reproduction this experiment is being done in a secret, undisclosed location. Dr. Jackie O'Connell of Cambridge University expressed doubts over the research and its chances for survival. Dr. O'Connell says most cloned embryos never reach maturity because they survive to the blastocyst stage of 18 cells and after this there is a massive rate of attrition, and Dr. Zavos claims his embryo to be at an early stage with growth of up to about 8 cells.

Dr. Zavos also claims the purpose of his cow's egg experiment was to get an understanding of the mechanisms of cell developments and cloning method, and not to

be creating monsters.

Analysis

The ethical issue of the article "First cloned human embryo is ready to implant in surrogate mother, scientist claims," is the fact whether it is for reproduction, noting developments in cell growth or any other reason given, is this truly a justified experiment.

The stakeholders in this experiment are the medical field, insurance companies, and the whole human race. These reproductive scientists believe it to be a way to better understand the growth of the human body, or prevention of sickness or birth defects or disabilities, or even providing children to those with none. The medical field would benefit greatly from this, doctors and hospitals and pharmaceutical companies, inclusive of the numerous companies that would fund and back these experiments. Their belief would be that this cloning would do more good than harm. Insurance companies' premiums would rise, and more money would be coming in their doors. They may also believe this to be costly but doing more good than harm because it could be considered preventive healthcare, alleviating sickness among other things, and in the end they would have more money coming in than going out. When considering the human race as a whole, I don't believe this to be as great. Everyone would not be getting equal, nor would everyone get the same opportunity and some may not even get an opportunity at all. The cost for this would be outrageous, between cost with the cloning and cost with healthcare, today most people can hardly afford healthcare itself. It comes down to an issue of money, because money speaks and if you don't possess it then basically you don't have a voice to be heard. I believe that if people utilize this

reproductive service then basically they would be getting what they deserve and pay the price for their decision, whether is be a good experience or a bad one, it would be their personal choice.

Is the miracle of life to be treated in this manner? If you feel you have got a "lemon"clone can you return it as you do a car? There is a point when people need to stop trying to recreate something that was never their creation to begin with. Life consists of ups and downs, and health and sickness, and much more. We have to accept life for the beauties as well as the ugliness, and with this are opportunities for growth instead of wasting our time trying to obtain the unobtainable.
