the film 'Proof,' by Jocelyn Moorhouse, Martin's obsessive search for proof is certainly justifiable but ultimately counter productive and misled. I completely agree with this statement. While his disability provides a sufficient reason for his obsession, it is the depth, stubbornness and single-minded desire for the truth, which is misguided. As a child, Martin had no trust for his mother, leading to his insecurities as an adult. Through his camera Martin's attempts to discover the truth begin to control his life, affecting the way he thinks, behaves and lives. His quest works against him, ruining his relationships and stopping him from moving on until he finally learns to understand others, ironically through Andy's lie.

Through the many carefully sequenced flashbacks in the film, we learn about Martin's childhood and the origins of his insecurities. His relationship with his mother was distant and floored with mistrust. Moorhouse uses extreme close-ups of her lips and in the connecting scene, Celia's lips to link Martin's childhood with his adult life and convey the message of mistrust for the two women in his life. When his mother tried to describe for him the view from their flat window, Martin was very cynical, insisting that she was lying and refusing to believe what she said. When she questioned him as to why she would lie to him, he replied simply, 'Because you can,' (Scene 10). This early-developed theory that people will lie to him because they can, stays with Martin for his whole life, fuelling his obsession with the truth as an adult.
