Is it right or wrong, ethical or not ethical, legal or illegal, these are questions often asked when searching for an answer to some of the world's most exhaustive debates. One particular situation that has received nationwide attention and remains the center of much conflict and heated controversy between law providers and citizens with different value systems is that of legalized abortion. The central argument in this debate hinges on the discussion of when life is considered to begin. Some believe that life begins at the moment of fertilization. While others believe that life doesn't begin until after the pregnancy or at the very least late in the pregnancy. Proponents for the Pro Life movement predominately use the Judeo Christian teachings found in the Holy Bible to support their argument. Followers of the pro-life movement believe that just because it is legal, it is still fundamentally immoral or unethical to take a human life. Those who are pro choice attempt to support their suppositions through science and the fact that abortion was made legal due to the decisions from landmark court cases the existence of legal precedent.

Prior to the 70's most state legislators widely criminalized abortion. Not until the controversial Roe vs. Wade case was the Supreme Court given the authority to decide if abortion is legal, therefore providing the judicial system with an opportunity to either fall within the shadow of former legislative "mood" or cross the line in favor of a new and potentially controversial attitude. . "In 17, in the landmark case of Roe vs. Wade, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution provided a fundamental right for women to obtain abortions. The Supreme Court held that the right to privacy, established by the Court's precedents in the contraception cases of the 160's and early 70's, assured the freedom of a person to abort unless the state had a compelling interest in preventing the abortion. The Court then held that, though the state had an interest in protecting fetal life, this interest did not become compelling (i.e. adequate to allow banning an abortion) until fetal viability occurred in the third trimester of pregnancy. Thus, all the state abortion laws that regulated abortion during the first six months of pregnancy (except for the purpose of protecting maternal health during the second trimester) were invalidated" (Abortion Law Home page). Contrary to that of the pro-choice belief system, there are the people, which choose life, otherwise known as pro-life. My own beliefs reside in this category. While the issue of abortion is legal, I personally think it is one of the most unethical decisions a person or persons could choose to make. Like many pro-lifers I believe that life begins before conception, quiet possibly before fertilization. These beliefs are evidenced by writings of the Holy word that guides my Judeo Christian beliefs. Jeremiah proclaimed the word of the LORD came to him and said, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart I appointed you as a prophet to the nations" (Jeremiah 1 5). The prophet Isaiah proclaimed to the nations that, " before I was born the Lord called me" (Isaiah 41). Isaiah also stated that the LORD says, "your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb" (Isaiah 444). The great psalmist David wrote, " For you created my inmost being you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be" (Psalm 1 1-16). According to the scripture Jeremiah's life begin prior to conception in the mind of God but Jeremiah's destiny is formed then and there, as was Creation itself, in God's mind and by God's command (Henderson, Charles). Henderson also notes that the scripture does not only doesn't support that life begins at conception, but even before fertilization. "In this account, conception does not even happen in the uterus; it happens in the secret place of God's own mind beyond this world of time and space. Again, the basic biblical teaching about the beginning of life is that it happens at God's initiative, by God's command, in God's mind. The Biblical writers did not even have the notion of conception that we have arrived at only recently through scientific investigation. They believed that the male sperm was the seed of life and that this seed is planted in the womb where it grows like any other seed. Clearly, in this, the biblical view, our notion of conception has no place. Human life no more begins at conception than the apple begins when an apple seed finds its way into the ground" (Henderson, Charles).

Therefore the idea that life begins at conception is unbiblical. Henderson notes that, "When someone argues that life begins at conception, and should be morally and legally protected from that point forward, they have no stronger legs to stand on than those who argue that life begins at birth." (Henderson, Charles) That belief aligns itself with the Humanistic perspective, because it places the initiative of human life in the parent's hands. In a sense it allows humans to "play GOD" if you will. It is my belief that giving humans this authority is not only unethical but also unjust. While the laws of our nation strictly forbid murder, sometimes punishable by death, it also clearly makes a procession for the murder of unborn babies. The validity of the cases themselves that made abortion legal is now under fire. Tom Newman reports that two women that were used as pawns by the ACLU are now doing something explosive trying to take their cases back to the Court to have them overturned. Newman reports that both women are now pro-lifers and are of the Christian faith. "Norma McCorvey, the Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade, and Sandra Cano, the Mary Doe of Doe v. Bolton, are now pro-life Christians. While McCorvey's case was about abortion, even though she lied to her lawyers, Cano's was not remotely associated with the gruesome procedure."

The story is about an hobbit (Frodo) who receives a special ring from his uncle (Bilbo) after his adventures in Erebor. A friend of Frodo's uncle, Gandalf, who is wizard, suspects that the ring is not just an ordinary ring and decides to tell Frodo of the ring's special powers. He tells him the making of the ring's power and of Sauron, the dark lord who created the master ring to rule all of the other rings, who was defeated centuries ago by the last alliance of elves and humans. One of the humans took the master ring from Sauron after he was defeated but the human was ambushed and had the ring taken from him. Frodo and Sam decide to travel through the Old Forest, which have many rumors told about it. They come to a city called Bree and meet a mysterious man, Strider, who warns Frodo that he is danger and asks if he can go along with Frodo on his journey. The hobbits stay the night in Strider's room. The hobbit's room is attacked later that night.

They leave Bree the next day traveling with Strider through the wilderness. They reach a resting place later that night and are attacked by the Black Riders, who are the ring wraiths. They are nine men who are enslaved by their rings and cannot be killed. Frodo is stabbed by one of their swords, but he is saved by Strider. They manage to escape from the Black Riders even though Frodo is badly wounded. After a long hard travel they meet and Elven Lord, Glorfindel, who puts Frodo on her horse and races the Black Riders to a river. There she calls on the river to overtake the Black Riders and they are swept away by the water. Frodo makes it to a place called Rivendell and recovers. They meet up with Gandalf again in Rivendell where he reveals that he was held captive by the wizard Saruman, who betrayed the elves and humans and joined with Sauron. Also Frodo learns that Strider's real name is Aragorn and is the only one who claim the kingdom of Gondor, a place in which humans dwell.

It is here in Rivendell where a fellowship of nine men are assembled to destroy the ring. The only way they can destroy the ring is if they cast it into the fires of Mt. Doom in Mordor, where the ring was forged by Sauron. After the fellowship is assembled they leave and travel through the lands of Hollum. Gandalf suggests they take the pass over the mountain Caradhras, but the evil mountain sets up a magic snow storm making it impossible for them to pass. Gandalf comes up with an alternative which it to go under the mountains through the lost dwarf region of Moria. Gandalf leads them through Moria into a room called Mazarbul where they become surrounded by orcs. They eventually fight their way out of the room and encounter their greatest evil yet, a Balrog, a demon of flames from the ancient world. Gandalf engages the demon on a bridge and just as it appears that Gandalf has beaten the demon, he is dragged along with the demon into the depths under the bridge.

He is offered food, but turns it downs due to lack of money, but then inquires on the whereabouts of his kinsman. Robin is met with the same sort of hostilely that he received with the older gentleman. He thought that this was because of his lack of money that brought him to this. Robin's blindness and naivety ate becoming to hold him down. He only sees the towns people as nuisances. He is becoming unsure of himself and the journey. ``The result of his former inquires made unwilling to hazard another``(pg ). Robin soon has huge cense of displacement, when he crosses paths with a group of young men dressed in ``embroidered garment`` of ``showy colours gold laced hats`` who were dancing and humming a tune. This is not an obstacle like the others but one that brings Robin a little uneasiness about his belonging. Instantly an epiphany- Robin's excitement ran through his mind about the night the crowd the spectacle of his kinsman. ``A perception of tremendous ridicule on the whole scene affects him with a sort of mental inebriety``. Robin soon notices all the citizens he met on his journey. The old man, the innkeeper, the pretty mistress, and all the people who made sport of him during his journey. Robin's face was pale ``his eyes not quite as lively as in the earlier part of the evening``(pg. 40). Devastated, as anyone would be of he harsh realization. but a learning experience. Hagar Shipley, Margaret Laurence's most well known character, is looking back at her life from ninety year old eyes. She sees a life of struggle and unhappiness. From her childhood as "Jason Currie's black haired girl…" (Laurence 6), through her scandalous marriage to Bram Shipley, and finally her life with the deteriorating body of a ninety year old she goes through a number of incidences that lead to her eventual epiphany. This unhappy woman, whose pride and stubbornness often get in the way of life's pleasures, is a character that many have identified with. This incident seems to be a symbol for the hardness of Hagar's heart and her cold personality. She has little room for emotion even at a young age.

Hagar's marriage to Bram Shipley is another testament to her stubborn nature. Her father forbids her to marry him, but she goes ahead and marries him anyway. She thinks she will be able to change his bad habits. Hagar eventually leaves Bram and becomes a housekeeper in Ontario. She realizes that she does really love Bram but is too proud to admit it until it is too late. Hagar lives with many regrets. Hagar's two sons, Marvin and John, are also a source of regret for her. Marvin, the son she never really loved, is now taking care of Hagar in her final days. John, who was always her favourite, dies. Hagar's life seems to be one disappointment after another. These together continue to harden Hagar.

The later years of Hagar's life are a time of reflection and pondering. She is as unhappy as ever. She is cranky and difficult for Marvin and his wife to look after. Hagar's health is deteriorating and the burden is becoming too large for her son and his family to bear. When she is asked about entering a nursing home Hagar is once again resistant and stubborn. She decides to run away. It is on this journey that Hagar starts to understand herself and come alive. She pours her heart out to an old drunk and in doing so has a realization about who she is. This is the first step towards her journey of self acceptance and the softening of her heart. Later, just before she dies, she makes a sort of peace with Marvin and dies reaching for a glass of water. This symbolizes her state of true life before her death.

Hagar Shipley was a stubborn and proud woman from her childhood. She spent many years living in a state of misunderstanding and unhappiness. Her hardened personality and the tragic events of the deaths of so many close to her left her in a state of defiance. Her marriage to Bram only strengthened her misunderstanding and she continued to run from her true feelings. It was not until at her most vulnerable stage, right before her own death, that Hagar comes to terms with her own shortcomings and begins to accept herself. This new feeling - of feeling - allowed for Hagar to experience a few moments of actual life before her death. She, the stone angel, opened her new eyes and caught a glimpse of the world.
