America can also be associated with monopolisation and a controller. 'chewing-gum, hot dogs, electronic brains what child of simple origin could want more?'

This quote from Americanized is similar to what this composer suggests about multi-nations. She talks how customers have limited selection through monopolisation or consumerism; everyone goes for the common fashions, electrical brands for example.

The early twentieth century saw the escalation of war and the rise of totalitarian regimes hidden beneath the ideology of socialism. The earlier part of the century had seen the first global war which ultimately led to the Russian revolution in 117. World War I had made apparent Russia's industrial, technological, and administrative ineptitude. After the deaths of several million Russians as casualties of war, the people demanded an end to Russia's participation in the war. This, coupled with severe rationing of food, led ultimately to demonstrations, strikes, and the forced abdication of the Russian Tsar. A provisional government, headed by the Duma, eventually led to a civil war and Lenin's rise to power. After his death, power struggles between Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky resulted in Trotsky's expulsion from the country and Stalin's own reign of terror. Such was the world to which George Orwell, author of Animal Farm, alluded in his satire on the Russian revolution and the ills of misguided socialism.

It is through the main characters such as Old Major, Mr. Jones, Snowball, and Napoleon that Orwell exposes his political treatise. It is through Mr. Jones, the farmer who originally owns Manor Farm, that the evils of capitalism are exemplified. In the book, he epitomizes the moral decline of men under a capitalistic society. On the farm, the animals live a subservient life dedicated wholly to the benefit of man with little regard or care for the animals themselves. The animals see themselves as dejected and oppressed. Jones, seen as losing his edge, also exemplifies Czar Nicholas II and the old Russian government. Old Major, one of the oldest pigs on the farm and an obvious metaphor for Karl Marx himself, was widely respected among his fellow animals and was considered a kind, grandfatherly figure. He states, "Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs…Yet he is lord of all the animals. He sets them to work, he gives back to them the bare minimum that will prevent them from starving and the rest he keeps for himself" (). Consequently, it is Old Major who first proposes a solution to the animals' plight when he inspires a rebellion. It is curious to note the animals' inability to adequately analyze their present situation and their degree of contempt towards their previous life under capitalist administration. The narrator states, "If they had no more food than they had had in Joness day, at least they did not have less. The advantage of only having to feed themselves…was so great that it would have taken a lot of failures to outweigh it. And in many ways the animal method of doing things was more efficient and saved labour" (75).

After the rebellion, the pigs establish themselves as the natural leaders owing to their ability to read, write, and rationalize. Two major characters arise from the tumult, Napoleon and Snowball. Napoleon, representing Stalin, is the chief villain in the book and exemplifies the pitfalls of revolutionthat the fundamentals of socialism, although in and of themselves good, can never be wholly realized due to man's fallibility. Although initially wholesome, Napoleon becomes preoccupied with greed and power leading ever more precariously to corruption. "Somehow it seemed as though the farm had grown richer without making the animals themselves any richerexcept, of course, for the pigs and the dogs (1). Stalin, although originally desiring to retain socialism's fundamentals, came to ultimately reject them. Snowball, however, excellently characterized Trotsky, who in the early days of the rebellion closely resembled Napoleon. Both struggled to gain leadership and as a consequence, argued constantly. These two disagreed at every point where disagreement was possible…Each had his own following, and there were some violent debates (6). Snowball devised a plan to construct a windmill as a means to provide electricity and therefore create heat, warm water, and power to use farming equipment; but as always, Napoleon opposed him. The struggle for preeminence between Leon Trotsky and Stalin emerges in the rivalry between Snowball and Napoleon. Napoleon had been premeditating Snowball's expulsion for quite some time, since he had removed nine dogs from their mothers with the idea of training and establishing a private police force. The discussion over the windmill gave Napoleon the perfect opportunity which he promptly seized and Snowball was thence cast out of Animal Farm. The parallels between Stalin and Trotsky are all too obviousStalin, wary of Trotsky and his supporters, had exiled Trotsky to Mexico and was later assassinated by the Russian internal police, the NKVD. The purges and show trials with which Stalin eliminated his enemies and solidified his political base find expression in the book as the false confessions and executions of animals whom Napoleon distrusts following the collapse of the windmill. These events lead to Napoleon's further subjugation and manipulation of his "comrades."

Orwell excellently portrays the effect of propaganda and its ability to manipulate and control the population through the character Squealer, who "could turn black into white" (6). Squealer, like Stalin's propaganda, was the integral link between the pig leadership and the other animals. He is able to mask the pigs' intentions through coercion, thus squelching their resistance. In the book, Napoleon defies one of Animalism's (the philosophical name for the animals' new society) commandments, "Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy" (4), and engages in trade with a Mr. Whymper. "Afterwards Squealer made a round of the farm and set the animals minds at rest" (77).

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Some Animals are More Equal than Others

Napoleon and the other pigs eventually usurp all the power and ironically the other animals end up in a plight equal or worse than with Mr. Jones. However, "as for the others, their life, so far as they knew, was as it had always been…Sometimes the older ones among them racked their dim memories and tried to determine whether in the early days of the Rebellion, when Joness expulsion was still recent, things had been better or worse than now. They could not remember" (1). The pigs begin to walk on two feet and, as the ultimate example of Orwell's underlying treatise and the ability of the few to corrupt a noble philosophy, the most widely revered commandment, "all animals are equal" (4), is changed to "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" (1). Ironically, in the end, it is the pigs who eventually adopt their human counterpart's follies, turning the rebellion upon itself and resulting in the sense that everything had been for naught.

Although Orwell believed strongly in socialist ideals (viii), he felt that the Soviet Union realized these ideals in a terribly perverse form. The most powerful ironies derived from the depiction of the corruption of Animalist ideals by those in power. The book serves not so much to condemn tyranny or despotism as to indict the horrifying hypocrisy of tyrannies that base themselves on, and owe their initial power to, ideologies of liberation and equality. The gradual disintegration and perversion of the Seven Commandments illustrates this hypocrisy with vivid force, as do Squealers elaborate philosophical justifications for the pigs blatantly unprincipled actions. Thus, his book critiques the violence of the Stalinist regime against the human beings it ruled, and also points to Soviet communisms violence against human logic, language, and ideals.

Synopsis

In the article "First cloned human embryo is ready to implant in surrogate mother, scientist claims," is the issue regarding the cloning of human beings.

Panyiolis Zavos, a fertility expert at the University of Kentucky, claims to have made the worlds first cloned human embryo. He created hybrid embryos by putting DNA into "emptied" cows' eggs, insisting this was not done in poor taste but as a scientific model for future human cloning efforts. He joins a group, Severino Antinori and the Raelian cult, who have claimed to have made human embryos but these claims have not been verified. Dr. Zavos claims to have created the cloned embryo with cells taken from a woman, then attempting to transfer or implant but due to complications with the surrogate, this was postponed. The embryo was then frozen, as is commonly done with embryos for test tube babies.

Since the U.S. and Europe outlaw human cloning for reproduction this experiment is being done in a secret, undisclosed location. Dr. Jackie O'Connell of Cambridge University expressed doubts over the research and its chances for survival. Dr. O'Connell says most cloned embryos never reach maturity because they survive to the blastocyst stage of 18 cells and after this there is a massive rate of attrition, and Dr. Zavos claims his embryo to be at an early stage with growth of up to about 8 cells.

Dr. Zavos also claims the purpose of his cow's egg experiment was to get an understanding of the mechanisms of cell developments and cloning method, and not to

be creating monsters.

Analysis

The ethical issue of the article "First cloned human embryo is ready to implant in surrogate mother, scientist claims," is the fact whether it is for reproduction, noting developments in cell growth or any other reason given, is this truly a justified experiment.

The stakeholders in this experiment are the medical field, insurance companies, and the whole human race. These reproductive scientists believe it to be a way to better understand the growth of the human body, or prevention of sickness or birth defects or disabilities, or even providing children to those with none. The medical field would benefit greatly from this, doctors and hospitals and pharmaceutical companies, inclusive of the numerous companies that would fund and back these experiments. Their belief would be that this cloning would do more good than harm. Insurance companies' premiums would rise, and more money would be coming in their doors. They may also believe this to be costly but doing more good than harm because it could be considered preventive healthcare, alleviating sickness among other things, and in the end they would have more money coming in than going out. When considering the human race as a whole, I don't believe this to be as great. Everyone would not be getting equal, nor would everyone get the same opportunity and some may not even get an opportunity at all. The cost for this would be outrageous, between cost with the cloning and cost with healthcare, today most people can hardly afford healthcare itself. It comes down to an issue of money, because money speaks and if you don't possess it then basically you don't have a voice to be heard. I believe that if people utilize this

reproductive service then basically they would be getting what they deserve and pay the price for their decision, whether is be a good experience or a bad one, it would be their personal choice.

Is the miracle of life to be treated in this manner? If you feel you have got a "lemon"clone can you return it as you do a car? There is a point when people need to stop trying to recreate something that was never their creation to begin with. Life consists of ups and downs, and health and sickness, and much more. We have to accept life for the beauties as well as the ugliness, and with this are opportunities for growth instead of wasting our time trying to obtain the unobtainable.

It is nearly impossible for anyone to have never heard the name Theodore Roosevelt. President Roosevelt served in office from 101 through 10, and there have been many theories questioning the validity of Theodore Roosevelt and his ability to be president. It has been argued that Roosevelt was in fact, incapable of carrying out his presidential duties during the course of his presidency. Contrary to popular belief, Theodore Roosevelt was mentally affected during his time spent with the Rough Riders, which left him incompetent to make knowledgeable decisions on as president.

Theodore is already noticed as abnormal, at a young age. His mother comments about him in an interview, "As a child, he would refuse to go out and play with the other children…he rather been reading" (Morris 64). Exemplifying characteristics of his extraordinary intellect, Roosevelt proved to be a scholar at heart. The refusal to play and instead be reading is remarkable. It shows us that Theodore Roosevelt was abnormal from a very young age. There always something there, it just needed a small push over the edge. Many say that Theodore Roosevelt was an intelligent man, but people who are extremely intelligent are usually the loonies.

Theodore Roosevelt was involved with the Rough Riders. This was due to his involvement through the navy, he being the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Theodore Roosevelt thought that his involvement in the Spanish-American War was insufficient (Morris 618). Therefore, he decided to propose a voluntary cavalry regiment for this war. President McKinley accepted the proposal of the regiment, and he deemed Roosevelt the head of the regiment. Roosevelt was amazed with this great news, and he took advantage of it. Knowing of the new child known as media, Roosevelt uses it to publicize the war. It shows how irresponsible it was of him to release the kind of events that were happening at the time. As noted by Walker, there is a photograph that depicts the Rough Riders at the battle of San Juan Hill on horsebackwhen in actuality they were on foot. This was one of Roosevelt's tricky schemestake a photograph while on horseback, and have the media state that it was during the battle of San Juan Hillthere was no actual photograph of the Rough Riders on foot (Morris 65). The reason for their depiction of being on horseback was to keep their prestigious name of being a cavalry regiment. It would have made the Rough Riders look bad in the eyes of the public if they were known for being a cavalry regiment and be seen on foot. Theodore Roosevelt wanted to deceive the public right before becoming their great hero. The popularity of San Juan Hill helped him win the presidential election of 100.

The American public was Roosevelt's greatest concern now. By this time, began to start liking the media's influence on the American people (Morris 65; Barber 54). It is obvious now that Roosevelt loved the attention that he might receive from the public. Morris describes the public as being Roosevelt's main concern at the time of his presidency

Many await crowded into all the small places usually inaccessible…it is January 1, 101, and Americans wait for the chance to shake hands with the president…

quite possibly the quickest hand-shaker around …50 shakes in one minute. Anxiety grows as every minute passes until 8 a.m. when the president reveals himself to his faithful people. (-11)

Morris specifically states that Roosevelt's fans are awaiting him in anxiety. This exemplifies the great bond among the American citizens and the people's President Roosevelt. Morris shows us that Roosevelt also loves to see his people follow him around (17). This is undoubtedly the best example supporting the idea that Roosevelt needed the media to influence the people in his favor. This also supports the assumption of Roosevelt's mental capabilities dropping, because there is evidence that before the Rough Riders Roosevelt was completely competent. Roosevelt never made any decisions that put any of the Rough Riders near or in danger. He was extremely cautious and always strategic in his decisions, which were always modified later (Wimmel 1).

Roosevelt was the type of person that did not want to be left behind. He was the person that always tried his best, which might not have been the best. Attempting to touch on that subject, it would send anyone into the study of psychologywhich no one may have the time to go over. Well, he was involved in many physical activities other than studyinglike boxing, horseback riding, and martial arts that he used to strengthen his disability of asthma (Morris 66). One may wonder how it is possible for another human to be so strong-hearted and strong-willed. The strength of his will is certainly immeasurable due to the fact that we do not know how much he wanted and needed to succeed in life. However being true, Walker states that Roosevelt would educate the Rough Riders about his condition and how he had gotten so far in life (00). Educating people was a noticeable quality in Roosevelt for he most likely admired the people's gratitude. This appreciation of gratitude soon begins to descend. Roosevelt's New Year's day of 101, it is seen an urge to try break his own record of fifty handshakes an hour. Thus, leading on to the media's coverage of his life as the President. He wanted to deceive the people and impress them in a superficial way, trying to be popular for the public. Rooseveltwe can assumeloved the attention, because he was the first president to be fully engulfed by the media. Day-and-night, night-and-day, the media followed him non-stop.

Roosevelt here is clearly lessening his competence. It was plain to see he would become mentally alike as a child. In delivering speeches, Roosevelt would stress his "I" and pronounce it as "Aiiii-eeeeeeeeeee!" just to aggravate a companion of his (Morris 0). Educated people should not act inappropriately in that manner no matter what the audience's sense of humor may be. One may see it as annoying, while another may see it as delighting and comedic. Roosevelt had many characteristics including a comical one (Morris ii; Walker 115; Barber ). It may be argued that it was just Roosevelt's nature to be humoring and comical. Was it humor or insanity? No one really knows, but everyone should assume that it was humor. For this purpose please assume insanity, because people have never argued that Roosevelt was incompetent and always have assumed humor.

One can see that Roosevelt's situations that are presented could lead to an incompetence of some sort. If in fact Roosevelt was incompetent to make presidential decisions, would it not take a defining line to state someone incompetent and another competent? Who sets these standards of competency? People, who think something is normal may just be what is common, this is what sets the normal standards. Yes, there would have to be a dividing line concluding some people incompetent and others competent.

The competency of Theodore Roosevelt may be argued either way. This is an attempt to get people to see the incompetence of Theodore Roosevelt after having spent time with the Rough Riders. This idea sets the stage that the presidency of Roosevelt could have been better, only it was not. Roosevelt's composure is questionable, but it is unknown to us if all the actions of the Rough Riders led Roosevelt to insanity or a higher sanity. Meaning, that insanity would be an incompetent level and higher sanity being a level of increased knowledge. Roosevelt was a great president but not a competent one. He needed to try his bestfor that was his will in life, to try his best. Incompetence is not trying for the best, because one does not strive to be competent of certain decisions.

What led Americans to declare war on Britain in 181? For more than five years, tensions had grown between the United States and European nations. After years of failed negotiations, some Americans decided it was time for a war.

Americans claimed that their right to trade and use the sea was violated by Great Britain. American ships were being seized, cargoes were stolen, and sailors had been kidnapped. Great Britain was in clear violation of the rights of America's use of the sea. The only option other than a war would be to completely stop trading with European nations, which would completely cripple our economy. American complaints went unheard for years bringing us close to war. (Documents 1,, and 4)

Some people were not in favor of war. Certain people believed that the war was not in defense of our rights on the seas, but for greed of land. A war with Britain could truly be greed for the land north of us, Canada. People were against the war because of this reason. (Document )

Now Americans were in defense of their own rights. A reason for the war would be too demonstrate to the world that we were united as one group of people. We wanted to show that our government was prepared to assert our rights. This was for the interest of the people, and to eliminate all foreign aggression. People were anxious to show our power to the British. (Document 7)

While all states south of Pennsylvania were overwhelmingly in favor of war. This was again the case during the presidential election of 181, when President Madison just narrowly defeated Federalist DeWitt Clinton. It was obvious the Democratic-Republicans were in favor of the war, as the Federalists were unanimously opposed. (Documents 5,6, and 8)

Intro to Film December 17, 1 A Nightmare on Elm Street At a time when the stalker movie had been exploited to all ends and the image of mute, staggering, vicious killers had been etched into society's consciousness to the point of exhaustion, a new kid entered the block. The year was 184 and it was time for a new villain to enter into the horror genre. A villain that was agile, intelligent, almost inviolable yet viscous, and by all means deadly. A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced the distinctive presence of Fred Krueger to the horror industry and to the audience. Freddy Krueger took the center stage and with him a new era of horror films began. This horribly scarred man who wore a ragged slouch hat, dirty red-and-green striped sweater, and a glove outfitted with knives at the fingers reinvented the stalker genre like no other film had. Fred Krueger breathed new life into the dying horror genre of the early 180's. Horror films are designed to frighten the audience and engage them in their worst fears, while captivating and entertaining at the same time. Horror films often center on the darker side of life, on what is forbidden and strange. These films play with society's fears, its nightmare's and vulnerability, the terror of the unknown, the fear of death, the loss of identity, and the fear of sexuality. Horror films are generally set in spooky old mansions, fog-ridden areas, or dark locales with unknown human, supernatural or grotesque creatures lurking about. These creatures can range from vampires, madmen, devils, unfriendly ghosts, monsters, mad scientists, demons, zombies, evil spirits, satanic villains, the possessed, werewolves and freaks to the unseen and even the mere presence of evil. Within the genre of horror films falls the sub-genre of teen slasher/stalker films. These teen slasher/stalker films take the horror genre film characteristics into account, however they add more to the formula. More violence, sadism, brutality, and graphic blood and gore are used to increase the terror factor. Sexuality and gratuitous nudity are also key characteristic of many of these films. Imitations and numerous sequels are also a common characteristic of teen slasher/stalker films as well. A Nightmare on Elm Street and all of the following six sequels fall into its ownsub-genre of the teen slasher/stalker sub-genre as well, know as the Nightmare on Elm Street Series. This series of films adds a new dimension to the typical teen slasher/stalker film, depth of character and story. The characters are not there only to be killed, but rather they have distinct personalities, they are independent and intelligent, particularly the female lead characters. The killer, Fred Krueger, as well is not only there to murder his victims. He displays a great amount of wit, sarcasm and intelligence. The audience comes away with a knowledge of each of the characters individual personalities. The storyline takes on a greater depth as well. The story goes beyond the simple gore and focuses more on the psychological terror that lies within and scares society the most. The line between nightmare and reality becomes blurred and the terror is allowed to build up, which results in a tremendous amount of suspense. Horror films developed over a century ago and have come from a number of different sources folktales, witchcraft, fables, myths, and ghost stories. The first horror movie was made by Georges Melies, titled The Devil's Castle (186). Another of the early influential films was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (11). The shadowy, dream-nightmarish quality of this film was brought to Hollywood in the 10's and continued on into the horror films of the 10's. Horror entered into the Dracula and Frankenstein era during the early 10's. The studios took stories of European vampires and mad scientists and created some of the most iconic beings ever known on the screen. Dracula films and sequels were less successful than many of the Frankenstein sequels. Many of the films in the horror genre from the mid 10's to the 150's were B-grade films, inferior sequels, or low budget gimmick films. During the 150's most of the films were cheaply made, drive-in teenage oriented films. To counter the popularity of television, experiments with -Dimensional films were madeThese low budget films helped to keep the horror genre alive when the larger Hollywood studios turned away.
