The Spanish Civil War Historiographic Essay

In the years following World War I, Europe was the scene of rising political

tensions and military power struggles. With Communism gaining power in eastern

Europe, the governments and people of the western countries began to explore different

forms of bureaucratic control of their country. Spain was no different. From 16 to

1, Spain experienced a military revolution under the guidance of General Francisco

Franco. This revolt transpired not just from a military coup, but from various political

and social reasons.

In his book, The Politics of Revenge, Paul Preston examines the Spanish Civil

War as an extension of all social and political tensions that evolved after World War I.

After World War I, the European working class began to lose faith in government and

sought out reform. It became obvious that Europeans became wearied with

bureaucracies. They felt they had too much power and were keeping the working class

restrained. People desired a better life and all over Europe governments began to see

opposition. The most significant movement was the Bolsheviks gaining power in Russia.

Preston explains that Spain had developed into "the latest battleground in an

ongoing European civil war whose previous battles had been Vienna in 14, Berlin in

1, Lisbon in 16, Rome 1" (Preston 10, 5). Preston's theory is viable in that

Europe was seemingly transformed into a theater of war within various states. But the

Spanish Civil War was more or less a military overthrow led by General Francisco

Franco. Vladimir Lenin had gained support from the military through his campaign in

Russia, but his battle was seeded in the rights of the middle class.

Preston also contends that the Spanish Civil War is often ignored when discussing

the evolution of the onset of World War II. Most of the researches done on the

beginnings of the war fail to give credence to the Spanish Civil War and its association

with the Second World War. But to neglect the Spanish Civil War in its connection to

World War II is to overlook the timing of Hitler's expansion into Poland. Preston states

that Hitler used Franco and his operations to assess the response of the Western powers to

the "vagaries of the Francoist cause." So Preston argues that the Spanish Civil War was a

gauge to the spark of Hitler's war machine (Preston 10, 5).

Another view of the cause of the Spanish Civil War was the deaths of two

political leaders. In his book Spain The Vital Years, Luis Bolin explains the rise of

General Primo de Rivera in 1 and his influence on King Alphonso and the

government. Bolin states that the King acted as a constitutional monarchy and that the

previous regime of politicians that hampered the country from effective rule. Rivera's

coup was the only alternative for King Alphonso and a military dictatorship was

established. There was no opposition from the political parties and the working classes.

Rivera was able to settle the unrest in Spain and bring it to the verge of prosperity in

10 (Bolin 167, 7-). Most of the Spanish citizens were benefited from the stability

that Rivera had brought to the country. The working class avoided labor strikes and labor

leaders had a positive association with him (Bolin 167, 7). During his seven year

reign, Rivera halted the strife that had engulfed Spain the previous decade.

However in March10, Rivera suddenly died. Bolin states that Rivera's "mild

and efficient dictatorship would have saved the Monarchy and avoided the armed strife

that broke out in 16" (Bolin 167, ). So Bolin believes that Rivera could have saved

Spain from civil war and Franco's dictatorship. After his death, Rivera's successors tried

to highlight his mistakes and put the blame on the King. The following succession of

leaders attempted to bury Rivera and his work in the past. Bolin states that "there was no

attempt to continue the work that had brought Spain to almost unprecedented heights of

prosperity and internal peace" (Bolin 167, 10). The new leadership of the government

could have invested in Rivera's enterprises, but through selfishness and egotism failed to

advance Spain's position of welfare.

Another figure that Bolin contends, whose death led to the Spanish Revolution

was Calvo Sotelo. Sotelo occupied to position of minister of finance under Rivera and

was very proficient in economic and administrative procedures. He was able to forge

plans that helped Spain through the world-wide depression and aided the country in

developing ordinances. Bolin states that he "was as much at ease when balancing the

budget as when drafting municipal and provincial statutes comparable to the best in any

land" (Bolin 167, 141). This illustrates the importance of Sotelo in regards to the

Spanish government.

But Sotelo eventually became leader of the Right-wing opposition in the Spanish

Parliment. He enjoyed the privilege to attend all meetings and participate vigorously in

the matters of the state (Bolin 167, 141). Sotelo was a very important and critical figure

to the country and because of his influences and his devotion to the Right, he was

threatening to his opposition. Therefore Sotelo was kidnapped and murdered. Sotelo was

taken from his apartment at 00 a.m. on July 1, 16. Four men that identified

themselves as members if the Civil Guard, accompanied him from his apartment. The

men put him in a van and took their seats alongside him. A gunman then fired two

point-blank shots to Sotelo's neck and he was killed instantly (Bolin 167, 1-). The

Republican government tried the usual cover-up but there were too many witnesses

(Bolin 167, ). They had eliminated a key figure of opposition to their cause. Thus

with the deaths of two prominent figures of Spanish constitutional government, the

Franco's movement had separated key components of resistance.

Stanley Payne argues that the weakened state of the middle class along with

divisions formed within the Republican government were the prime causes that initiated

the Spanish Civil War. In his book The Spanish Revolution, Payne argues that during the

months leading to the revolution the Spanish middle classes were numb to the events

unfolding within the country. He claims that even though the economy was in a

downward spiral, the divisions of middle class leadership and numerous factions within

the political realm could offer no viable response to the revolution (Payne 170, 16). In

a state of weakened government, a military coup is simplified.

Payne points out that "revolutionaries were actually hoping to provoke the Army

to revolt so as to force it into an indefensible role in which its antileftist elements might

be destroyed, leaving the middle classes without protection and opening the way to a

leftist takeover" (Payne 170, 16). This premise accounts for the fact that the

revolutionaries were presuming that the divisions of government would rely on the army

to protect the symmetry of the nation, but the leftist knew they would sway the army to

their side.

Payne states that "the left Republican leaders soon sank into almost absolute

paralysis" (Payne 170, 1). He claims that if the Republican leaders had made an

effort to uphold the constitution and maintain the integrity of the state that the revolution

might not have occurred. This was because only half of the army had joined in the

revolt. Most of the Nay, Air Force, and police force had remained faithful (Payne 170,

1). So if the Republicans had acted swiftly and astutely, the entire course of Spanish

history would have been altered.

Though the Spanish Civil War was a bloody military coup, it was shaped from

various reasons. The social tensions in all of Europe, the deaths of two prominent

Spanish political figures, and the instability of the government led to the revolution.

General Franco's takeover and subsequent dictatorship were aided by these

circumstances.

Why I chose to pursue a master's degree

"I want to go back to school for my master's" has almost become my mantra over the last few years. I always knew that returning to school was in my future, but struggled with when to return and which degree I wanted to pursue. The continual changes in the information technology job market have provided the motivation I needed to decide and enroll. Knowing that I had to balance school and work schedules, I considered a Master in Business Administration (MBA) or a Master in Computer Science (MCS) program. I chose to pursue a MCS degree to build upon my experience to make myself a viable candidate for advancement into management. Survival in the information technology industry is becoming a challenge, with more jobs being downsized or internationally outsourced so that there are fewer jobs available within the U.S. job market. I do not want to be one of the people forced to leave the industry in search of a new career. I have chosen to work harder and obtain the knowledge needed for survival in this industry. I feel the best way to survive is by continuing my education and pursing a MCS degree. I have obtained several computer certifications in my 15 years working in the IT field, only to find that each certification becomes obsolete relatively quick due to the technology field's fast-paced and ever-changing environment. I find that I reference my certifications for the relevance needed; yet throughout my career I have continually drawn from my undergraduate schooling. The MCS program will build upon my Computer Science undergraduate degree and my work experience. You might consider it a 15-year internship, which should help me obtain more from a graduate program. I want to go back to school for several reasons; to upgrade my current skill set and attain a better understanding of business, to enable me to place the experiences that I have accumulated in my career into the proper context, to acquire new perspectives on how to evaluate situations from a business perspective in addition to the technical one, and to gain experience in communicating my thoughts and conclusions in a manner that people with a diverse background can identify with and support. These are proficiencies I'm eager to achieve from the program. I hope this will help in advancing my career as I apply the lessons learned in class to the business world in which I work.

My desire is to develop myself from a software-specific engineer to an accomplished managerial candidate. I chose the University of Phoenix (UOP) because of its teamwork concept. I like the team-based concept as a forum for developing my analytical and leadership skills. An added advantage is that participation on teams with a diverse skill set allows an appreciation of business issues from a broader perspective. I look forward to sharing my experiences, which range from consulting to a variety of technical and leadership roles, within the information technology field. As an individual, I have learned to balance my professional career with an active lifestyle that includes family and volunteering with the youth at my church. These experiences have taught me the importance of learning from others, and the importance of establishing a commitment with others to reach a common goal. I am interested in not only expanding my horizons, but also leveraging my experiences to help others in their experience inside the program and beyond.

Do my essay on Why I chose to pursue a master's degree CHEAP !

My long-term goal is to seek advancement in a leadership role and lead a team that is focused on delivering innovative solutions that change the way a business delivers service to their customers. The lessons that I learn while earning this degree will provide new opportunities not only upon receipt of the degree but also on the journey to receiving it. I do not expect to wait until the end of the journey to apply lessons learned. I anticipate that the skills and methods I learn throughout the program will likewise be applicable in my existing role.

Possibly one of the most well known civil rights activities took place in August of 16. King along with Civil rights leaders from across the country organized a march in Washington DC. The event was titled the March on Washington. It was used to encourage congress to pass the bill that president Kennedy had created. The poem First Love written by John Clare is a free verse poem whereas, Shall I compare thee… written by William Shakespeare is a sonnet where it is made up of three quatrains and a rhyming couplet at the end. The two poems share a similar theme about love where both writers talk about love with a beautiful woman. Although both poems share a similar theme, they do differ when it comes to describing in text and the way their subjects are portrayed.

"First Love" is a free verse and so it features three stanzas, each with eight lines and each line having eight syllables to balance the poem out to make it structured like a song with a nice flow and mellow. The poem is about a young man who falls in love with a beautiful girl and starts talking about his first love by describing how he felt and what he thought of her and how she responds to him. John Clare describes the physical impact of first love, 'Struck before that hour… face turned pale as deadly pale… my legs refused to walk away.' Clare describes a state of powerless caused by the theft of his heart by the girl, 'stole my heart away complete.' Senses are described to be in turmoil when it is as if he is blinded by love, seemed midnight at noonday… I could not see a single thing.' He then goes and says that things will never be the same again and he conveys this by describing his heart as if it is an independent entity which has left home and now belongs elsewhere, 'my heart has left its dwelling-place and can return no more.' He is totally obsessed with her and describes her beauty, 'her face it bloomed like a sweet flower.' But he is too shy to approach her, 'and then my blood rushed to my face and took my sight away.' How does his love react? She seems to respond positively, 'she seemed to hear my silent voice and love's appeal to know… I never saw so sweet a face as that I stood before.

But in Shall I compare thee… its more about comparison rather than descriptive feelings. The poem is structured into three quatrains and a rhyming couplet at the end. Each quatrain features four lines and each line has ten syllables so this too also balances the poem out and gives a nice flow. Quatrain one presents a question, 'Shall I compare thee to a summers day?' comparing the girl to a nice summer day. The answer in the same quatrain is that she is more lovely and more temperate.' Quatrain two continues the comparison between a summer's day and the lady, to the detriment of the summer's day. Quatrain three announces a turning point with the word "But", and describes her superiority over summer and time, 'But thy eternall sommer shall not fade…when in eternall lines to time thou grow'st.' In the rhyming couplet, it is said that she will be realised and would be seen "immortalised", 'so long as men can breath or eyes can see, so long lives this, and this gives life to thee.'

As both are poems, usually there are rhymes and rhythms to make it an artful piece of work. In First Love, it is rhymed like "abab", for example;

a) 'I ne'er was struck before that hour,

b) With love so sudden and so Sweet,

a) Her face bloomed like a sweet flower

b) And stole my heart away complete.'

The pace of the poem sounds mellow and quite fast as each sentences is short and as well as the words which too would be pronounced quicker as there are only eight syllables in each sentence. The probable reason why the poet has done it this way making it a fast pace flowing poem is because the man is describing his feelings about this beautiful girl, where the poem is related to his heart, which is beating fast as he is seeing his first love and usually that first love tend to be a sensational feeling as he has never experienced it before. So in practice as he sees this girl and describing what he sees and feels, it would be like a rush of adrenaline and out of control. The pace of the poem would be similar to the pace of the heart.

In Shall I compare thee… there is a rhythm as well like "abab", for example;

a) Shall I compare thee to a Summers day?

b) Thou art more lovely and more temperate

a) Rough windes do shake the darling buds of Maie,

b) And Sommers lease hath all too short a date

The pace of the poem sounds slow and there are ten syllables in each sentence and there are some long words. The probable reason why the poet has done it this way because the poet probably wants the readers or listeners to understand what he is trying to say and so the pace of the poem would be slow making it last longer and thus making the readers/ listeners imagine the images the poet want to them to picture in their mind.

Imagery has been used to express themes in poems and so descriptions are needed. In First Love, there is a simile, 'Her face bloomed like a sweet flower' which since this poem is about a one man first love, the poet would like the reader/ listener to understand the mans feelings as to why he likes the girl by describing her like a sweet flower and this in turn helps to acknowledge the reasoning for this. Alliteration can be found as well like 'so sudden and so sweet' and 'saw so sweet', which gives a positive note as 'sweet' is a positive word. The poet wanted love to be good thing and so used 'With love so sudden and so sweet' to create a desirable effect that love is a great thing to have.

In Shall I compare thee…. metaphors are used like 'the eye of heaven', which is the metaphor of the sun. 'His gold complexion' where the sun is personified. That means when the sun comes the clouds go and block the sun saying that the sun will not be shining all the time as for the girl she will be shining. And 'not shall death bring…' where death is personified as if about to claim her. 'Shade' suggests the opposite of the sun and means ghost or soul after death. The choice of words used like, 'temperate' (moderate; restrained; of even temper) and 'darling' (beloved; lovable) helps reader understand the poem as a whole. With all the points accounted for, the poet in First Love is suggesting that love is a wondrous feeling and can be positive but once you become obsessive about it then it can create a devastating effect on the subject and brings disappointment towards the end and find setbacks. It happened before to the poet when he wanted to marry the daughter of a wealthy farmer but he could not due to his background and this disappointment made a lasting impression. The devices/ language is used effectively and the poet got the ideas across to the reader very well, as they are easy to understand and was made simpler. Words with two or less syllables were used and the devices used were simple and thus making the reader to understand the views and concept a lot quicker. I agree with the poem where first love can be a truly amazing feeling but once you have fallen into the obsessive stage then there is no way back and you will be stuck there and depression will come which happened to John Clare when he could not marry the girl he loved and so disappointment came and depression.

The poet in Shall I compare thee…. tries to say that time is a cruel thing and tries to defeat it by making the poem sound to last long. The poet is also saying that love is immortality and that time can be defeated. She will be immortalised in the lines of the poem, which will still be read long after she dies. With love, it can last forever. The devices/ language used is effective as it helps to create an easy image. Metaphors and personification helps to create images and made the poem more understandable. My response to this poem is that I agree that time can be defeated as it can never match love. Love has been around for years and does not seem to stop. With time progressing, so will love. But I believe that love and time is needed otherwise it would not make the world it is currently is. Without time there would not be love, and without love there would not be any progression.

The socialization process is different from one person to another. It is related not only with peoples education , but also with the environment in which peoples grown up. Thus, many people enjoy to have a lot of friends. In contrast, other people prefer to spend time only with a few friends. Its clear that both options have advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I prefer to have only a few friends, but the good ones. I think that because of two main reasons that I will support in the next lines.

First of all, I prefer quality over quantity. I think that in order to develop good frienships is necessary to spend some time. For instance, I have known a lot of people during my life, but only a few of them are actually my friends. The main feature of them is that I have spent a lot of time knowing everyone. I do believe that is very important to dedicate time to enhance the relation with friends, not only because they can help yo when you have problems, but also because you can help them also. Obviously, because the time is limited, it is necessary to do a adequated election of friends.

Second, in my personal opinion, if you have a lot of friends you will probably be distracted of other important thinks that need your attention. It is related with earlier idea that having friends implies spending time. People, specially youngsters, usually go out with their friends. They go to drink, to dance, etc. If they have more than one group of frinds, they probably spend (or maybe waste) their time having fun. They probably would obtain lower grades in the school or in the university, they would spend less time with thei couples or with parents, etc. So, I think that how many friends you decide to have its a matter off priorities. The more time you spend with them, the less time you have to do other important things.

In sum, I believe that the friends are very important, but I also think that people have to be careful with the time that they spend with them. I think that if people have less friends, they will probably develop better and deeper frienships.

"I Believe I Can Fly" is one of my all time favorite songs. It is a very inspirational song. The song was written and sung by R. Kelly. The song won him three Grammy Awards. And put him on top of the Billboard Charts in 17. Here is what I interpreted from the words of the song.

The words are fairly self-explanatory. In the first verse he says he thought he could not go on and that things were not going to get better. Then he found what he had been looking for, that special something, and he realized if he could see it he could do it also. That he should believe and he could do what he wanted to.

In the chorus he talks about believing he can do anything. And he also says, "see me running through that open door." By this he means when he sees the chance to fly he is going to take it.

The second verse is also about him feeling down and out. How things can be so bad. But he sees that there are miracles he can achieve and to achieve them it starts in his heart.

This song was meant to be an inspirational, uplifting song. I think that R Kelly did the job. This is a song that can get you going when you think everything is out to get you. This is a song everyone should appreciate and learn from.

I used to think that I could not go on

And life was nothing but an awful song

But now I know the meaning of true love

I'm leaning on the everlasting arms

If I can see it, then I can do it

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly

I believe I can touch the sky

I think about it every night and day

Spread my wings and fly away

I believe I can soar

I see me running through that open door

I believe I can fly.

See I was on the verge of breaking down

Sometimes silence can seem so loud

There are miracles in life I must achieve

But first I know it starts inside of me, oh

If I can see it, then I can be it

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly

I believe I can touch the sky

I think about it every night and day

Spread my wings and fly away

I believe I can soar

I see me running through that open door

I believe I can fly.

Hey, cuz I believe in me, oh

If I can see it, then I can do it

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly

Problem

1. Define the factors that impact the success of a work team

Many factors go into the definition of our work team. In our team the members have been working together for two years so there is a bond within the team. This factor enables the team to work efficiently while having good range of diverse views. Also within the team are individuals who have been given recognition for their outstanding work. This helps the team a lot because it shows that the team is not only a strong union but also very dedicated to their work. The team is also very diverse composing of men and women as well as people of different ethnicity. The team is also composed of different religious groups. The different religious groups can cause problem sometimes because if something was to go wrong with a conversation it would ruin relationships but since the team members have been mostly been working together for quite awhile it won't affect the success of the work team. Within the team there is a wide spectrum of skills; each member is highly trained in his or her field and is eager to learn from one another. In order to perform effectively, the abilities of our members are crucial. Because of the fact that role of each member is understood, everyone has to contribute in order for a project to go on. Anything missing will be traced back to each and individual member. Having being together for two years, team chemistry is solid. Members of the teams are able to complement each other and cover up for another's strengths and weaknesses. The time together has also bought together everyone and helped establish a strong relationship bond. Everyone enjoys working together and being in each other's presence. There are three contextual factors that will impact the success of the team Adequate Resources, Leadership and structure, and performance evaluation and reward system. Because of our pass success, the company recognizes it and constantly rewards the men and women of our team. The company also makes all resources available to this team because it knows that we will make good use of it. Although there is a project leader on this team and all the other teams, this team specially is more team oriented. The majority of the time, the group comes together to make the important decisions. Once in a while and in only special cases do the leaders make the decisions by him or herself. This type of system promotes self-management and the results are so far spectacular. Also by doing so, team members assume leadership roles naturally. They are able to bear more responsibility and carry more burdens. The company, recognizing how effective this style of team work, allows the team to exercise complete control over themselves. Overall, this team has a common purpose, everyone clearly knows what he or she has to do and what goals needs to be establish to achieve success.

. Now that each team has a new project leader, describe the process of creating trust in the new leader.

A big reason why this team has enjoyed the success is its trust in each other and the leader. There are 5 key points that trust consists of Integrity, competence, consistency, loyalty and openness. Each member of the group recognized how important it is to have it in increasing measures. By transferring project leads, the director is hoping to establish the success to the entire scope of the company. Modeling after the most successful team, the director transfers a leader from the lowest performing team and transferring the leader from the highest performing. In the case of the poor performance team, the new leader is experience and highly skilled in his department. In order to gain trust in him by his team members, he should practice openness. By showing them that he knows what he is doing, members will follow suit and learn from it. The team leader should be fair to all and not favor one over another. Let them know that each member is a crucial part of the team and let them contribute to the team. To be a good leader, one must be able to relate to his members. By sharing feelings, fellow members will better relate to the leader and will be able to bond with one another. A leader must always start out with the truth. Everyone all know too well the story of the boy who cried wolf. One must also be consistent in what they say. A leader is one who is constantly standing up for his values and beliefs. Members will see that in a leader and put their trust in him. They will depend on their leaders more they see that the leader is consistent with his beliefs. Leaders who make a promise and fulfill it will command great respect from his followers. These leaders are ones who are confident in what they say and do. By maintaining confidence in yourself it will eventually trickle down to the team members. They will believe in themselves knowing that they can rely on the leader when necessary. A leader is someone who can step up when necessary, one who will fill in the gap where there is. By practicing professionalism, you show your members that you have the ability to lead. By practicing these key points, everyone in the team will gain trust in their leader.

. What are the models of leadership to quantify the skills of a leader?

The Fiedler Model-

The quality of a leader is determined through a measurement of his/her style or personality at managing. A leader can be one who is concerned for production or concern for people and even be a combination of the two. The Fiedler Model attempts to assess a leader's ability using the least preferred co-worker questionnaire. The questionnaire uses 16 questions to determine the style of a particular leader. Then it matches the leader with the three situational factors

1. Leader member relations

. Task structure

. Position power

According to the findings, the concern of leader for production and/or people determines how strong he/she is in the three situational factors. Studies show the concern for production usually leads to unconcern for people and vice versa.

Leader participation Model

The leader participation model seeks to describe leadership behavior in relation to vary demands for activities. The founders of the model, Vroom and Yetton, provided a set of rules that identifies 5 alternative leadership styles. Recently the 5 styles were expanded to 1. The 1 styles determine the characteristics of a leader, where or not he/she makes decisions by him or herself or with sharing the problem with the group.

4. The Director made the abrupt decision to transfer the project leads. What does this decision tell you about the power in the department?

The power that the director is exercising by changing project leads is largely legitimate power. The director is in a higher position than the leaders of the software teams and has authority to change leads whether or not the leaders like it or not. The director has some expert power provided that he has years of experience in the field. However, the field of technology is constantly changing and while he specialized in it, his knowledge is no longer as applicable as it once was. His hope for better production is a legitimate one. In the current and expanding state of the software division and company overall, it wouldn't be too much of a risk to do so. With any luck the outcome might likely be very beneficial on the long run. Since our teams are mostly self-managed, there is very little coercive power. Teams themselves decide on who to hire and how to implement their work. Although the director is much higher up in the hierarchy, the way the company is structured, team members have no fear of getting fired or their salaries being reduced. There is also no reward power, rewards and recognition are decided by team and leaders rather than director is executives. While the teams are closely knitted, there is very little inter-organizational relationship in the company. Employees do not have a strong relationship than with those in their own and neighboring teams. Thus, there is also very little if not no referent power at all.
