Once bargaining got under hand, the Management team brought to the table the first article which was Article four (4), Reporting to work. It was unfortunately not what Management had in mind, through extensive bargaining both sides did reach to an agreement that was fair and reasonable.


The next change that management had in mind was Article five (5), Working Conditions. This to Management was of very high importance. What we really proposed to the Union was clarifying the language set out in the article. All language proposed by Management was under legislation. This was a stand that we needed to take in order to protect ourselves as the employer if anything were to happen to our employees. Management felt that by including the new language it would lower our costs incurred from WSIB. As suspected Union in no way stood against this change and was completely supportive with the amended language management proposed. Union also saw this as safeguarding our employees and it was agreed immediately.


Article 6, Hours of Work was the third change that we brought to the table. The change that Management wanted to see was making the work week extended to a total of 44 hours before overtime pay us to kick in, and make the work week Monday thru Sunday. This was an issue that did not leave the table until the very end. Both sides however managed to use a little integrative bargaining and meet half way. This article was of a larger variance because both Management and Union were successful with these changes.


Union did not want to bargain with this at all, they felt that employees do not need, or will not be used to working a 44 hour work week. At that point both Management and Union created language that represented both sides and both changes. With this article both Union and Management were successful.

As Management, we proposed an increase of wages to .5 per-cents (%), and per-cents (%) increase for cost of living; this was in relation to our maximum figures. In exchange for the increases to wage, Union agreed to delete Article 10 from the collective agreement.


Article 17, Bereavement Pay was an article that was neutral when it came to being on the bargaining table. Management wanted to implement a program that ensured a completion of the probationary period of ninety (0) worked days and Union wished to stay at the sixty (60) worked days or lower it. Again Management and Union came to a deadlock and the article carried out for a few meetings. Although Management agreed to Union changes for sub-articles 17.0, 17.0, 17.04 which consisted of adding immediate family members to the classification, and increasing consecutive days off. After negotiations Union did settle on the Management changes in return Union was granted changes to the above articles. With this article, we don't feel that Management suffered any repercussions. Her desire to be of a higher status and to possess nice valuable trinkets seemed to poison her very nature.


Mr. Loisel notice that his wife is not satisfied with her lifestyle. Seeing how she daydreams of living in luxury they cannot afford. He becomes excited as he carries an invitation to go too a formal dinner with the Ministry of Education. He had worked hard to get recognized for his efforts. Not too many clerks were invited to such an occasion. (6) Mrs. Loisel becomes upset because she has nothing elegant to wear for such an occasion. By forcing a few tears and sadly confronting her husband about her misfortunate state, she is able to convince him that she needs an expensive dress for a once in a lifetime event. Mrs. Loisel tells her husband she will need about 400 francs to purchase a dress worthy enough to get the attention of the other people at the dinner. The price was slightly more the he expected but gave her the money to purchase it from his next summer's vacation fund. Continuing with the emotion of self-pity, she develops into a greedy individual. The dress is not enough on its own, she will need an elaborate necklace to draw attention to herself. Mathilde is able to obtain a rather lovely necklace from Mrs. Forrestier who has large amount jewelry.

Mrs. Forrestier hardly recognizes her and regards her as a lowly working class woman. (110) She tells Mrs. Forrestier that she has just finished paying off the necklace that she had borrowed for the dinner. Sadly, in the end after all she has put herself and her husband through, she finds out that it was really in vain. Mrs. Forrestier tells her if she had only told her years ago, she would have only paid about five hundred francs because it was only costume jewelry.

Now this I'm sure is possible if I would just go to school full time but I have to pay for all my school so working is inevitable. This is where my predicament begins; I work in what I like to call "Hell on Earth" which is really a movie theater that only pays me $5.40 an hour. Now on 5.40 I expected to pay for school, rent, and other expenditures I have. So you can imagine I have to work a lot of hours just to get the bare minimum to pay for all of this. So if I want to keep with my schedule of getting my PhD by the time I'm twenty-six; I have to take a lot of courses at one time and at the same time work a lot to pay for those courses I'm taking. So here I am signed up for summer I, II, and III in total taking 1 hours in just two months. Now anyone that has taking summer courses knows that everything is at a fast pace, meaning a lot of work needs to be done at one time. This means for me that its a struggle to keep up with all the work at once, and at the same time go to work not to mention find time to sleep. Out of all my classes the one class that I am doing a half ass job in happens to be my worst subject English. I guess in my subconscious I know that English is the subject that I do worst in, so naturally I don't put that much effort into it. Because of this my teacher is most likely thinking that I am some kind of lazy ass that doesnt put any effort into school and is just here because I have to be. But it's not true, I want to be here and "better my self"(really not in a sarcastic tone) Im just finding out that my one really noble attribute is the one that is currently crippling me. So here I am; having to write this paper a process paper to be exact and the only process that I could think about writing was the one thing that is currently happening to me at the moment.

There was no threat to the different religion and thus the contrast does not hit them as hard as it has hit the Elizabethan audience. Another reason for the change in interpretation is that the modern audience is not as devote as the Elizabethan audience. During the Elizabethan period, many found solace in religion; religion was the answer to difficulties. To the modern audience, many seen religion as a form of duty and tradition. The sharp contrast between the mindset of the Elizabethan audience and that of the modern audience and the situation which the two groups of people is in led to a contrast in how they look and react to the play.

In his essay "Black Men and Public Space", Brent Staples attempts to introduce people to something most all are guilty of, but pay little attention to. Staples discovery of this comes during a late-night encounter. A young white female, whom Staples labels "my first victim" (17), was walking down the street in front of Staples and was not comfortable with the space he provided for her. After a couple of glances back and changes in her pace, she soon began running and disappeared down a side street. Of course, Staples had no intention of robbing or in any way harming this woman. He was just taking a walk, just as she was. Nevertheless, this was a fairly well to do neighborhood. Apparently, this woman figured that if a black man did find himself in this part of town, he was most likely up to something. Not wanting any trouble, she decided to get out of harm's way.


In another illustration, Staples describes an instance in which he was delivering a story to the editor of a magazine for which he was writing, and was mistaken for a burglar. While racing to his editor's desk in order to meet his deadline, the office manager and an "ad hoc posse" (1) of security personnel began to chase him through the building. "I had no way of proving who I was," Staples writes. "I could only move briskly toward the company of someone who knew me." (106)


While writing for a Chicago paper, Staples walked into a jewelry store in another well-off part of town, and encountered another situation where his skin color came into play. The woman behind the counter disappeared and returned with an angry Doberman. Understanding that the woman did not quite value him as a possible sale, Staples "took a cursory look around, nodded, and bade her good night."(1)


We get the idea that things like this happen only in Chicago, Staples also writes about some of his similar encounters in New York. In Brooklyn, he says women often become fearful when encountering him on the streets. As he describes it, "with their purse straps strung across their chests bandolier-style, they forge ahead as though bracing themselves against being tackled." (00)


Staples also points out in the essay that he is not alone in his encounters of this racism. In another incident, a black associate of his was stopped and almost taken to jail by the police on suspicion that he himself was the murderer. "Such episodes are not uncommon," says Staples. "Black men trade tales like this all the time." (18)


What is so nice about this essay is the fact that Staples does not want to point to whites as the only people to hold this fear of black men. "I could cross in front of a car stopped at a traffic light and elicit the thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk of the driver¾black, white, male, or female¾hammering down the door locks," (1) he recalls of his experiences. When black people display this sort of fear of another black person, then it is not a racist reaction. That is not true, though. The fact that even those of the same ethnic background fear the worst from this man because of his being black only makes the argument stronger that racism drives this fear.


These incidents force Staples to make an admission though. He admits that he understands the fear others have of him. He acknowledges that, because women are often vulnerable to attack on city streets, they are justified in being overly cautious when encountering a potential attacker. He also agrees that black men are often the perpetrators of such attacks. As he states, though, "these truths are no solace against the kind of alienation that comes with being ever the suspect."


Staples argument that his color is the only thing that would lead others to fear him is not without its flaws though. He describes his appearance during that first incident in "a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket." (17) He also informs the reader that he likes taking walks at night, and that his encounters frequently happen during those walks. He should be free to take a walk whenever he feels like it, should he not? However, people will always be cautious of anyone who walks the streets in the middle of the night, particularly if they are within a reasonable closeness to harm you.


He also seems to make the mistake of thinking that his personal background or profession would prevent others from viewing him as a threat. His description of how he managed to avoid the violence that so many others in his hometown had fallen victim was certainly moving. In addition, the fact that he was able to get an education and a good job despite the obstacles provided by his background are commendable. These things all help to draw compassion from the reader, but they are irrelevant to how pedestrians and jewelry storeowners would view him. Most people would rather not take the time to know the background of potential attackers, when avoiding trouble altogether would be the best course of action.


Despite its few weak points, Staples essay serves an important purpose. "Black Men and Public Space" exposes the racism to those who are not conscious of it, even though they may be guilty of it.
