Levin (00) asserts that the mission and structures of community colleges in the United States and Canada are changing in response to globalization. This paper provides annotates from a personal viewpoint in response to Levin's domains. Levin maintains that economics, cultural, information, and politics are four domains that serve as the foremost globalizing factors for community colleges. Levin contends that the economic domain includes global production of goods and service of government and private sectors. Further, he describes the cultural domain as including the ideology that students are consumers of the education product, the interaction of people from other cultures, and the notion that the world is a single place. The information domain includes computer-based information and production processing technologies, communication technologies such as electronic mail (e-mail), video broadcasting, and computer software programs. The fourth domain of globalization, as described by Levin, is one of politics and government, particularly state and provincial governments. Levin conceives politics as a major driving force of globalization, which emphasizes "economic goals . . . workforce training and state economic competitiveness as outcomes . . . [accountability] to government and . . . [responsiveness] to business and industry" (p. xxii). One can argue that these outcomes have, for the most part, been technical education's mission for many years.

Levin (00) describes the economic and political domains in a perspective that "in general, moneyand not education objectives . . . [drive] production" (p. xix). This economic and political view of community colleges parallels the merger that I see taking place between Mayo and Prestonsburg Community College. I have noticed that the institutions are more concerned with the management of personnel and budgets than with educating students. This preoccupation can be seen by the continual raising of tuition and the addition of six layers of local bureaucracy since the official merger.

The cultural domain includes the ideology that students are clientele of the education product, that people interact with people from other cultures, and that the world is a distinct place (Levin, 001). From my observation of the merger at Mayo, I can see, from Levin's cultural domain perspective, that the merged colleges view students only as patrons. The schools seem to be unconcerned with the students' education or welfare; students appear only as numbers on a spreadsheet. There is no real effort to encourage the diversity that is taking place in other institutions and there is little mention of anything other than the merger.

In conclusion, the visit from Clifford Wells gave me hope for technical education because it proved that a system with concern for students' learning as an outcome still exists in Kentucky. Levin (00) argues that community colleges continue to be responsive, adaptable institutions that meet community needs. However, the community is now re-defined as part of a managerial economy, and largely economic, proliferated by global capital, by large corporations, and supported by governments at the federal, provincial, and state levels. Moreover, Levin asserts that business and industry profit by the community colleges responsiveness and that economic development is fostered through the training of a workforce and the re-training of workers. This suggests that community colleges want to take on the role that the technical colleges have fulfilled in the past. Moreover, Levin believes that by responding to the community and to pressures of government, community colleges have fulfilled part of their mission but neglected their social and educational function of serving the under-served. I concur with Levin and believe that If I can acquire a position of leadership or influence within technical education that I may be able to instill some of the student orientation that has traditionally been central to technical education. Further, It will be interesting to see what form post-secondary technical education takes in the post-Patton administration.

As the 00 football season began, we knew that we had one of the better teams in our conference. Our team just entered the Jack Pine Conference and was ready to go to war with any team. We knew that we had a shot at earning the Jack Pine championship, but also knew it would take endless amount of practice to get there. With everyday becoming a closer one to our first real game, our team set goals that we needed to accomplish. We wanted to win conference and we wanted to make the playoff; something that is very tough to do, as we knew every team was gunning to beat the new comers. Finally the day had come; the day where it wasn't our teammates lined up on the other side of the ball, it was new faces, new colors and new names. I knew as the Quarterback and as the captain, I had to lead my troops into victory.

Being Quarterback is a very stressful and difficult job, as everyone may not think. I had to have the greatest head, had to be smart and had to be able to take whatever was thrown at me. When the team loses, the team gets the loss, but the QB also gets it. I know that there is no "I" in team, but no one else is pulled out of the bunch and receives a loss, except the QB. I was willing to take the responsibility and make sure we were an unstoppable force. As game time neared, the butterflies entered and I knew that the time was almost there. It was my senior year and my last year to ever play football and wanted to start off with a big bang. As we received, we wanted to make a statement and score right away. The play came in and it was my favorite one. All I can remember is my coach yelling the play, "Oklahoma right, 5--1-," and I knew that it was a touchdown. My favorite receiver was a guy named Tyler Foor, also my roommate, and he had the 5 pattern, a post-where the receiver runs out 10 yards and then breaks towards to goal post. I seen him break open and I reared back and let her fly with all I had. The first play-a 60 yard touchdown pass. I knew that this was just the start of an unbelievable ending.

We went on to win that game, but then we hit some kind of brick wall. We did every single possible mistake, in the next two games, a team could do. We would go out and fumble, slack on defense and just not play to our potential. It was like our dreams we had as a team, was slowly coming to an end. To make playoffs, the team had to win at least six games and we had already lost two; one non-conference and one conference. The season looked like it couldn't get any better, but then luck turned onto our side. We fixed out mistakes and capitalized on our opponents. We dominated in every aspect on the game. We went on to win the next two and stood all alone in second place; one game out of first as the biggest game coming up was for first place. This game was not only our homecoming game, but the game that I will never forget.

Throughout the day, I carried a football everywhere I went, to every class, through the hallways, it didn't matter. The only problem with the day was that rain was in the forecast for the night. The team never practiced much with the ball wet, so we knew that we wanted it to be dry and warm. As school progressed until the end, I worried about nothing the whole day except football and the big game. No one wants to go to the homecoming dance with a loss. The school day ended with a pep assembly and then a parade through downtown Gladwin. My team rode on a big farm wagon, while I rode in a nice 00 convertible Mustang, as I received honors to be the Homecoming King. This all seemed like I have been there before in a dream at night. It was as if I was the king of the jungle that all creatures looked up to. I was about to play the biggest game of my life, I was named king, and most of all, I was liked by everyone.

The parade went on for about an hour with the rain still coming down. Finally, the team got back to the school and had a free hour to relax and do whatever we wanted. Earlier that day, our coach went and got the Bay City Times and read a quote that the other team's coach said. The quote went like this, "The only way my team will loss, is if Heavenly Intervention occurs. They will not score one single touchdown on us!" The team seemed pretty determined and had their mind set on winning. They had every right to, as they stood alone in first place. As the team got dressed, I sat in the bathroom with my guts and intestines all turning opposite ways. It was gut-check time and I had to go to work.

I went back to my locker, put one piece of equipment on at a time and then taped up. Last to put on was the shoulder pads. I slapped both sides and whispered, "Keep me in good shape." Over the head they went and finally the # jersey with BRATCHER on the back was pulled over. Then, my lucky headband was put on. This was made out of a girls tight, to keep the sweat out of my eyes so I could see. A lot of different people that did this at the beginning of the year, but now mainly Tyler and myself. I guess you could refer to it as what we called tradition. So then I was ready to get dressed, strap up and get the team ready to roll. As part of my team headed out towards the field, only the backs, something right then, changed. The rain stopped and the sun came out. Everything started to slowly dry, as we had hours until game time. Why all of a sudden this happened? No one knows, but in my books, it was only the start to heavenly intervention.

As we arrived at the football field, over ,000 prospects stood, clapped and cheered as loud as a two ton freight train driving by. It was the second greatest feeling that I have ever felt. Soon I knew that the claps would no longer matter as World War III was going to break out. My team took the field and started throwing different routes and different plays until the line came out and we all gathered around the goal post. Here was the start where the team got pumped up. I would always be the one to jump up on the pile, say a few words and then in tradition of the Gladwin High School football team, say, "Break down," and then all my teammates would follow with a response of "Hit," and that cadence would occur three different times. The team would line up like a tunnel, being as wide as the goal post, going out towards midfield. The announcers would then call off the names that were starting, and then the guys would hit them as they ran out.

I would always be the last one called out, seeing how it was my team and I was in command. After I started to run out, the rest of the team that wasn't on the starting squad would follow behind me and we would all gather at the 50 yard line. We would all huddle in a circle and then start jumping around. Finally, after about a minute, we would stop and I would say, "Who do we hate?" and the team would reply, "The Mustangs!" Like the other saying, we would do this three times and then run to the side lines and get ready for kickoff.

Walking out to the field, the captains, one being a spokesperson, and the refs from each side would meet at midfield. Usually it was me, but sometimes we switched it up. Since it was our combat zone and our place, we got to call it. We won the toss and chose to play defense, to see what they really had. Coming into the game, we knew we had to stop their running back, who led the conference in rushing yards. As the game got under way, I was patiently waiting for the finally sound to see the ending score and what the outcome was going to be.

As soon as war broke out in 114, historians began to ask why and how it could possibly have happened. What had gone wrong? As the fighting spread and casualties mounted, the question became more urgent. To this day no one has come up with a definitive explanation. In the following text I will attempt to highlight the principle factors which contributed to the outbreak of the First World War. After studying these causes I shall then decide in my opinion which is the most significant factor.

The First World War broke out against a background of rivalry between the world's greatest powers. These powers were, Britain, Germany, France, Russia and the USA and to a lesser degree, Austria-Hungry, Italy, the Ottoman Empire and Japan. No single power was dominant. The US, for example, had the strongest economy. Britain the most powerful navy, and Germany the most effective army. From 1870 onwards, the powers formed alliances for greater security. The Triple Entente consisted of France, Britain and Russia. The Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. By 114 the US was the only power not connected to the international web of military agreements. While Germany itself was strong, its allies were not. Austria-Hungary was made up of 11 quarrelling nations including some, such as the Czechs, who wanted independence, while others, the Serbs for instance wanted union with neighbouring states. Germany's other ally, Italy, was extremely unreliable and was desperate not to go to war. Germany was concerned by this fact and so the tension between the empires grew.

Linking with this cause was the long-standing hostility between France and Germany. Germany had become a united country in 1871, when it defeated France in the Franco-Prussian War and took the territory of Alsace-Lorraine. Germany also felt threatened and surrounded by the members of the Triple Entente, with Britain and France to the west, and Russia to the east.

The period from about 1850 to 114 is often called the 'Age of Imperialism', when the great powers used their military and commercial might to seize less developed parts of the world and bring them into their empires. The larger the empire the more prosperity and prestige it brought to the country. It was extremely important, therefore, for an imperialist nation to protect and, if possible, expand its overseas possessions. This invariably led to conflict between rival powers. The British were obviously the superior imperialists. Their empire occupied one quarter of the world's land surface. Many other countries in Europe held colonies all over the world. Before the entente with France (104) and Russia (107), these powers had posed the greatest threat to the British Empire. By 100, however, things were changing. A major reason why Britain settled her differences with France and Russia was that there was a new and aggressive player on the imperial board Germany. During the Boer War in South Africa (18-10) the Germans supported the Boers against the British. The British regarded German imperialism as a direct threat to their own international position. They were further worried when the Germans announced a massive expansion of their navy.

Order custom research paper on What Caused the First World War to break out?Which factor in your opinion was the most important?

Following with a link to the above cause, the naval race played a considerable part in the lead up to the outbreak of the First World War. Britain led the naval race. In the 1880's she adopted the Two-Power Standard which said that the Royal Nay should be at least as large as any other two fleets combined. At the time, these were assumed to be France and Russia. When either of them laid down new ships, Britain laid down an equal number. The situation grew more complicated with the emergence of three new powers Japan, USA and Germany. As the Japanese and Americans were friendly powers, their naval expansion caused Britain few worries. On the other hand, the build up of the German navy was more responsible than anything else for a serious deterioration in Anglo-German relations before 114.

Yet another factor was the underlying tension between the Balkan states. Turkey had once ruled the Balkans. Turkey became very weak in the nineteenth century. Slav people living in the Balkans gradually drove out their hated Turkish rulers. New Slav nations Serbia, Rumania and Bulgaria were set up. Austria-Hungary wanted to control the Balkans, as it was afraid that Slavs living in Bosnia and other Balkan states within the Austro-Hungarian Empire would want to break away to join Serbia.

Russia desperately needed to use ports on the Mediterranean Sea. This would make trade easier. Russia also needed to be able to sail its war ships out of the Black Sea in times of trouble and so needed to control the Balkans. Russia felt that she was under obligation to support Serbian ambitions, as a fellow Slav state. She also hoped to use her connections with Serbia to gain influence on the Mediterranean coast.

To top this tension off Germany needed the Balkans to be friendly, as they wanted to run a railway through the Balkans. It was to link Berlin with the capital of Iraq, Baghdad as Germany needed the oil Iraq could provide to fuel its economic growth.

The rivalries and tension between these nations continued to grow and finally exploded following the assassination of the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungry, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife the Duchess who were shot dead by a Serbian nationalist on the 8th June 114 in Sarajevo in the Balkans. This was because there was a dispute between Austria-Hungary and Serbia about who should rule over the Serbs of Bosnia, the Balkans.

Linking the alliance system to this problem was the fact that Austria-Hungary decided to go to war against Serbia. Because of the system of European alliances, this conflict drew in several other countries. Serbia was allied with Russia. Germany was ready to fight alongside Austria-Hungary. Russia was prepared to go to war in support of Serbia. France and Britain decided to support Russia. Italy remained neutral in 114.

After studying all the contributing causes of the outbreak of the First World War, I have come to the personal conclusion that 'imperialism' was the principle factor. Although the immediate cause of the First World War appeared to be the assassination of the Austrian Archduke, Franz Ferdinand, this was merely a flash point for a conflict between the major powers, which had become increasingly inevitable.

The alliances forged between the various countries bound them to a course of action, which once triggered, could not be broken. National ambition and the need for supremacy by Germany, Russia, France and Britain determined their actions, when each considered that their vital interests were threatened. Old hatreds and fear fuelled the mistrust between the

opposing countries. War seemed at the time the only solution to resolve this situation and once begun, the remaining allies were drawn in on each side.

The Fourth of July

It is amazing that a political document written 7 years ago could cause such argument, confusion, and pride in its history and still have any value in today's society. The Declaration of Independence is just that document. The Declaration of Independence is a living document in the sense that its contents have been interpreted throughout America's history to provide freedom and meaning to life.

When America's forefathers sat down to write the Declaration of Independence they had no idea they were about to write something of such great importance. In fact John Adams stated that the Declaration was "dress and ornament rather than Body, Soul, or Substance,". What they had not realized was that this Declaration was going to be a "national icon" to set moral standards to forever to come. Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Benjamin Franklin finished the Declaration of Independence on July fourth, 1776, just two days after America declared it's independence from Britain. In July, 1777, congress had not thought of celebrating the Independence Day until it had already passed. In order to not let this great day be passed uncelebrated, they celebrated it on the day that the Declaration of Independence was approved and passed out to the new nation. As a result, America has the July fourth holiday.

Order custom research paper on fourth of july

The Declaration however, did not stimulate an immediate positive reaction from everybody. There was a lot of confusion for a long time about what the Declaration really meant. When blacks started asking for equal rights people argued with them that when the Declaration of Independence stated "all men are created equal" that this did not include blacks. For the most part this was true. Jefferson himself owned slaves during and after the writing of the great Declaration. People argued that equal creation was "a falsehood, and a most pernicious falsehood" and that "the principle, although lovely and beautiful, cannot obliterate those distinctions in society which society itself engenders and gives birth to." However, a man named Benjamin Franklin Wade was a strong opponent of slavery and persisted otherwise. The "great declaration cost our forefathers too dear" and it was "worth the sacrifice of all else on earth, even life itself". He also stated that "no man has a right to trample on another" and that all rights be "restored without delay." Lincoln, who had just served his first term in congress, believed that the Declaration "contemplated the progressive improvement in the condition of all men everywhere." Lincoln was going to fight for this belief.

Not only did the Declaration of Independence cause a lot of confusion to fresh Americans, but it also paved the way for many great changes that were yet to come. Americans started using the Declaration of Independence to "justify their quest for equality". Slavery was slowly starting to be abolished in some areas such as in New York and New Jersey, not surprisingly, on July fourth, 17 and 1804 respectively. The end of slavery was getting closer. On September , 186 Lincoln stated in his Emancipation Proclamation that "slaves within any State or designated part of a State the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free". Lincoln looked toward the Declaration for guidance and believed that the Declaration of Independence was the "father of all moral principles,". The addition of the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments into the U.S. Constitution by Lincoln's party provided a guarantee to the protection and rights of black people in America. Blacks now had their freedom. If the Declaration of Independence was never composed these changes certainly would not have come so soon, if at all.

As a whole, the Declaration of Independence has brought many great things upon this country. Through times of war, conflict and through celebration the Declaration has kept us not only sincere to ourselves and to our fellow Americans, but to people all over the world. The Declaration has inscribed in us all, a true sense of morals.

Risqu Business Sexy Abercrombie Catalog Pulled

By Denver Post Staff and Wire Reports (December )

Clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has pulled its controversial in-store catalogs after outraged parents, conservative Christian groups and child advocates threatened a boycott over material they said was pornographic. However, a company spokesman said the move had nothing to do with the public outcry. The catalogs were pulled to make room near cash registers for a new Abercrombie & Fitch fragrance, he said. Were trying to drive sales, spokesman Tom Lennox said. We think theres greater opportunity with our fragrance. ... Its about making these stores as productive as possible during the biggest time of year for us.

The company, based in New Albany, Ohio, pulled the holiday edition of the A&F Quarterly, a combination catalog-magazine that targets teens and college-age consumers, from 00 stores Saturday, about a month after its publication. The perfume began appearing almost immediately, Lennox said. The Christmas Field Guide features naked or nearly naked young models in outdoor settings and offers advice on group masturbation, oral sex, and orgies. It sells for $7.

Sex Education Text Banned After Outcry

By Kadyr Toktogulov, Associated Press (November )

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan The birds and the bees do their thing in the mountains that fill this rugged Central Asian country, but the facts of life are off limits this year in Kyrgyz high schools. An ethnic Kyrgyz nationalist drummed up a public outcry against a new sex education book and pressured the government into withdrawing the text before school started in September. The book, a teachers guide titled Healthy Way of Life, also addressed subjects such as smoking and drugs. The author, Dr. Boris Shapiro, who heads an AIDS clinic in the capital, Bishkek, saw a need for frank advice for teenagers to slow the rapid spread of AIDS in this conservative former Soviet republic, where talk of sex in families is often taboo. The new texts most controversial elements are a series of cartoons displaying a man putting on a condom and a passage on masturbation.

Snow Day

"Hey there, it's another warm, sunny day!" This was the cheery message I heard from my radio as my alarm went off one Tuesday morning. Something was wrong, because I remembered there had been winter storm warnings the night before. It was then that I realized the station to which I was listening was broadcasting from California. I bolted to the window. Snow! I rushed to my television to look on a local CBS channel for school closings. There we were, Fort Smith Public Schools! This was our first (and very probable only) snow day of the year, and I intended to use it to its fullest.

The first thing I did that day, of course, was to get appropriately dressed for the day I was going to spend outdoors. As I was putting on my second layer of clothing, my brother, Kirby, burst into my room and announced, "We are out of school, bubba!" He went on to ask if I wanted to build a snowman and I told him I would help him later in the day. As I tied my shoes, I realized that I needed to get going and begin my fun before the snow melted.

I went outside and traversed through the snow to a hill behind my house, Dead Man's Hill. I met up with Ty Barnes and Ben Falkner. They were out sledding, and I went to join them. While I was sliding on the ice, I thought about how great this day was turning out to be.

Once my buddies and I finished sledding, I decided to go help Kirby with that snowman. I found him sitting in a chair anxiously waiting for me to come home and help him. When I opened the door, he was already pulling on his gloves. Once we were outside, I gave him some brotherly advice, "Kirby, don't eat the yellow snow." That being said, I started to roll up snow for the bottom of the snowman. Kirby jumped up and down shouting, "Bigger, bigger!" Once we were done building the snowman, we stood and marveled at our creation, taking pictures of it to preserve its memory.

Not surprisingly, my snow day turned out to be full of fun. I got to sleep late on a school day, I went sledding with my fiends, and I helped my little brother make a big snowman. That day was great, and I can't wait to have another one just like it!
