" There are good evolutionary reasons for the differences and women should not be too hasty in changing the way things have been traditionally organised"

Since the beginning of time women have been regarded as the weaker sex. Although many people strongly oppose this idea, there are reasons why this is the thought of the majority.

Females have always been seen as mentally weaker than males and this is largely due to one of the oldest books in History, the Bible. Adam and Eve, supposedly the first people on earth, were the first to depict this. It was Eve who was weak and gave in to the temptation of the forbidden fruit, therefore resulting in both Adam and Eve being removed from paradise. It is also commonly known that women tend to be more sensitive than men are.

Do my essay on Men Vs Women CHEAP !

It is a proven fact that men are physically stronger than women are. Many women may disagree with this point and some women have tried to take on occupations of a more physical nature, but if one thinks about it, how many women are, for example, builders? Not very many, if any for that matter.

Dating back to ancient time's powerful monarchs had concubines that were used to please them. Even though they may not have enjoyed their line of work and may have been threatened with their lives and that of their loved ones, in return they were fed, looked after and had a roof over their head. Instead of putting an end to their lives of servitude, their train of thought was probably, why bite the hand that feeds you?

Take Hitler for example or Napoleon, two of the greatest dictators that ever lived. If they were women, would the people listen to their ideas? Not likely! Chances are that those who listened would end up rolling on the floor in peals of laughter at the idea of some lady telling hem that all Jews should die and that she should be the ruler of a perfect world.

Women may feel that they have never been given enough credit, but Shakespeare who is the greatest play write that ever lived, even though he may have been male, had a very liberal attitude towards women and showed a great deal of respect for them in his work.

Women are the ones who give birth and with possessing the ability to do so they also have the added emotional stress of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), where they can be extremely irritable and may have mood swings. Imagine a female president whom, while going through PMS, decides to put all the country's funds to saving the chimpanzee and deduct money from the maintenance of the country!

Women enjoy dressing up for men and they love receiving gifts and makeup etc. Where does the money for these things and the gifts come from? The men of course! Would women really want to give up the idea of being spoilt by their partners and rather be seen on an equal level as their male companions? If they do feel that way then they should fight for their right to be on an equal level as men, but if majority of the women in this world feel the same as myself than I am afraid that they are fighting a losing battle.

TOMBOLOS. an island or reef situated just offshore has a dramatic effect on the wave conditions along a beach. As consequence, material is swept into the sheltered area behind it forming either a salient in the beach plan shape into the beach plan shape or sometimes allowing a neck of sediments to deposit, connecting the island to the beach. This feature is referred to as a Tombolo, after a particularly impressive example on the Tuscany coast of Italy, (Tombolo di Orbello). In general, tombolos form in areas of very low tidal range, where the complicating effects of tidal currents and changes in the water level are small.

INTRODUCTION

Island is of Jurassic limestone extends into English Channel and is Dorsets southernmost point. Joined to the mainland by the geological phenomenon known as Chesil Beach, the beach is said to have been formed approximatety 10,000 years ago and its formation is known as a tombolo which can be briefly described as, a strech of sediment deposit forming a connection between an island and the mainland or two or more islands. They are formed when an island or reef situated just offshore has an effect on the wave conditions along a beach. As a consequence, material is swept into the sheltered area behind it allowing a neck of sediments to deposit, connecting the island to the beach. Another process found to form these connecting features is Longshore drift, when sediments are moved horizontally along a beach and reach an indentation the sediments are deposited at the point of indentation allowing the formation to continue, this was the case during formation of Chesil Beach where an indentation occurred at , an This feature is referred to as a Tombolo, after a particularly impressive example on the Tuscany coast of Italy, (Tombolo di Orbello). In general, tombolos form in areas of very low tidal range, where the complicating effects of tidal currents and changes in the water level are small.

(include info on beach tombolo etc) Portland 4 1/ miles long by 1 ¾ miles wide, population of over 1,500

Island throughout history has been linked with the name of Portland stone. Quarried at least since roman times, blockstone of the Jurassic Portland beds has been used in famous buildings- St Pauls Cathedral and Whitehall. Beds date from around 140 million years ago, of marine origin contains many fossils from a sub tropical sea. Large ammonites from the beds can be seen in walls and gardens around island.

Islands economy relied on quarrying as government granted planning consents for quarries many of which still remain open today. In recent years economy relied less on quarrying as numbers employed decreased and more on Naval presence with harbour and MoD research establishments after the WW

Loss of jobs due top closure of these sites.

Therefore need to reduce dependency on defence agencies. And restructure and regenerate economy by reusing vacant Naval base and other sites diversifying economy. Options include;-

- development of appropriate Tourism drawing on natural environmental and heritage assets.

South Dorset Economic Partnership (SDEP) + private sector coordinate regeneration of economy attract investment.

- Assisted area status grants from Do Trade and Industry secured for current and new business.

- Grant aid from EU's Konver 1 programme assists defence dependant industries to diversify.

- Single Regeneration Budget funds targeted at social, employment, tourism and environmental initiatives.

HISTORICAL AND CUTURAL INPUTS.

Evidence of Mesolithic settlements from remains,

Not a lot remains of Roman settlements except Rufus Castle, near Church Ope, which is believed to have been built by William II ("Rufus" C1056-1060) Rebuilt 158, said to be oldest building of Portland stone. Farming, Fishing, mining and quarrying formed mainstay of Islands economy for many years

As English Naval Power grew Portland became a place of strategic importance and as a part of his plan to defend the coast Henry VIII ordered construction of Sandsfoot (partly destroyed) and Portland (built 1540 now managed by English Heritage) Castles to be built.

Much land owned by Crown Estate as a result of its status as a royal manor. Court Leet safeguards the extensive areas of common land.

Three lighthouses built over a period of two hundred years. Steam power and consolidation of Britain as a naval power saw changes to Portland. Building of breakwaters (info on breakwaters) to form Portland Harbour was a feat of engineering, which took more than 6 million tonnes of Portland Stone. Harbour played important roles in both world wars and important place of embarkation for invasion of Europe in 144.

THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF QUARRYING ON PORTLAND.

Island linked with name of Portland stone. Quarried since roman times, blockstone has been used in many famous buildings such as St Pauls Cathedral, the UN building in New York, Waterloo Bridge and Whitehall. The Portland beds 140 million years old and are of marine origin. Stone is part of upper Jurassic region 10-140 million years old. 5 meters in depth. Above is base of Lower Purbeck. Known as a dimension stone. Crushing for aggregate has become more wide spread. Dimension stone still quarried for, for resoration and new building.

Changes in industry have had marked effect on numbers of people employed in quarrying. Dimension stone quarrying still important but manning of modern machinery is greatly reduced. Numbers reduced for few hundreds to a few tens of men.

Planning permissions for mineral working on Portland cover 0hectares (815 acres) 7% of island., all but 0hectares (50 acres) of which were granted by permissions in 48 and 51 this reflected demand for stone at time (post war) reconstructing British cities Plymouth Southampton Swansea. e.g.s of where Portland stone was used. Only small amount was suitable for use as dimension stone therefore quarrying was expected to be limited, but no specific restrictions placed on planning consents. Although sites have also provided a source of cruished rock not envisaged when permissions granted has had environmental impact and implications for scale of future operations.

Original permissions granted they had no time limit now since Mineral Act 181, new mineral developments have 60year limit. Restoration and reclamation of old quarries is required some closed quarries may be reopened for if stone is needed to match existing restoration work result quarrying can continue for many years into future even without the granting of any further plan consents. Quarrying of blockstone has been in six quarries Admiralty, Boweres, Coombefield and Weston, Independent, Inmosthay and Perryfields. Also areas of island where consents granted but quarrying has not begun. INDICATED IN RESOOURCE PLANS(probably been fleeced)

In future rate quarrying rate will depend upon

- continued demand for dimension stone -a specialist market

- more general demand for crushed rock

- the demand for Portland stone for use as rock armour in sea defences.

- Architecurl styles adopted

- Buoyancy of the building industry

- Demand for natural stone.

Market for crushed rock less clear. Demand for crushed Portland stone will depend on availability of material from other sources closer/more easily attainable to the areas demanding, transport costs are significant in end costs High bulk low value.

Different quarries on island give rise to different types and qualities of Stone due to different beds in geological series. More systematic programme of working the mineral reserves due to fewer land ownerships and firms.

INFILLING OF QUARRIES FUTURE

Carefull consideration is needed in establishing methods of land resoration. Different types of fill

Infilling with quarry waste

Infilling with inert waste waste stone from quarries, builders rubble, non decomposing material.

Infilling with other non inert or putrescible waste. household and garden refuse degrades BUTProduces methane co and a liquid leachate..

PLANTING AREAS.

Retained trees, hedges and woodland areas, together with any on site and/or off site screen planting shall be prtotectedmainained and all failures replaced annually throughout operation.

PLANT, BUILDINGS AND MACHINERY.

All plant and buildings shall be painted in a colour and maintained throughout operation.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS

Where archaeological remains exist

Provide adequate opportunity and access for archaeological investigation and recording of the site.

Agree on selection of a properly qualified archaeologist to carry out the investigation.

Miscellaneous.

Stockpiles and overburden mounds shall be located to minimise environmental impact in locations to max heights agreed.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TOURISM.

THE REGENERATION OPTIONS FOR PORTLAND

Throughout history the economy of Portland island has been able to comfortably rely on the capital provided by the quarrying industry, however as the population of the island began to grow as did the technology used for the stone extraction, leaving many islanders jobless due to the use of machinery. The island has long had a strong military presence due to its geographically strategic defensive position, however when the Ministry of Defence began using the harbour as a Naval research centre, it seemed that the economy was "saved" and that no-one need worry. In more recent past it has been announced that the Ministry of Defence planned to close the research station and move on, this caused quitew a stir and since then there has been a concerted effort from the central government and local businesses to ensure that the economy of Portland is kept from failure.

THE MIX OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES ON PORTLAND.

The Island of Portland boasts many places of interest with a wide range of church buildings and military installations of the past, however, the most well known attractions include, Portland Bill lighthouse overlooking the English channel, one of the best preserved of Henry VIII's coastal forts is Portland Castle, the impressive sweep of Chesil Beach tombolo; Portland Museum and Shipwreck Exhibition, church Ope Cove, with the ruins of Rufus Castle and St Andrews Church. There are also the gardens, the Tout Quarry and sculpture park, a butterfly reserve, Art Galleries and Cliffside walks offering spectacular views.

Seeing as the island is so small, the attractions upon Portland are all situated very close together. The most obvious attraction to mention is the famous Portland Bill Lighthouse and vistors centre, positioned at the Southern most point of the island on a dramatic rocky outcrop. It was built between 10-106 and stands 16 feet high, it is surrounded by rock pools and old disused coastal quarries where some of the wooden derricks once used for loading stone onto boats still stands.

Further along the coast is Ope Cove which is home to the original Saxon St Andrews Church abandoned in 175, and the St Andrews Church memorial church, built in memory of the crew of a vessel "The Avalanche" on route to New Zealand in 1877. The Avalanche was sunk when 106 people lost their lives. The remaining twelve people were rescued by local fishing and rowing boats. The construction of the church was prompted by the owners of the vessel with donations from the crown and New Zealand. The cove and its attractions are overlooked by the ruins of the Rufus Castle, which was built by Rufus the son of William the Conqueror, but fell to William the Conqueror's grandaughter after a feud in 114 with King Stephen.

The Portland museum and shipwreck exhibition houses the islands smuggling artefacts, with the adjoining building containing the Portland Gallery exposed the Islands natural and social heritage and history.

Portland Castle is just one of Henry the VIII's defensive fortresses, the purpose of this one was to protect the harbour against invasion. Built in 15, it changed hands twice and was one of the last defences to surrender to Cromwell's men, it remained functioning for four hundered and fifteen years until 154 as it was recommissioned in an effort to prevent piracy and smuggling.

The Portland Harbour is the first area noticeable when entering Portland, it is one of the worlds largest man-made harbours, the massive breakwaters were constructed in the mid 1th century and used over 6 million tonnes of Portland stone, the harbour is bound by the island the mainland of Weymouth and is backed by the Chesil beach tombolo.

The Portland Harbour is very popular with participants of water sports offering a safe sheltered area for sports such as sailing, windsurfing, SCUBA diving, canoeing and swimming.

The afore-mentioned plans to develop the abandoned Ministry of Defence Naval Research centre at the harbour into a watersports center for holiday makers and professionals alike will improve the ease of participation in these activities.

An interpretation of "My Papa's Waltz" should take into account the complexity of the speaker's feelings that are brought about by the father's waltz. A dance should bring two people closer together. The dance in this poem acts that way, yet the darker side of this waltz, which is a powerfully unsettling emotion under the surface of the poem, dominates the mood, and the love and intimacy of the dance but does not make a strong impression on the reader. Theodore Roethke manipulates the reader's emotional response to the poem through a number of literary conventions, some of which play on the conventions of a waltz.

Waltzes are not difficult dances. They are set to light-hearted music. Couples sway back and forth, as they go round and round in a dance. The reader's emotions and sympathies do the same in the poem. The speaker carefully orders his images to juxtapose startling images with comforting images. In the first stanza, for instance, the speaker begins with an alarming image "the whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy." The second stanza begins with the words "we romped," undercutting the serious tone of the first stanza, yet the romping has consequences that reminds the reader again of the seriousness " pans slid from the kitchen shelf; my mother's countenance could not unfrown itself." The pattern is repeated throughout the poem, and the waltz spins out of control until the reader can only focus on a whirling sequence of disturbing emotions rather than a coherent overall feeling.

The poem is relatively brief with concise lines, and its language is for the most part reflective of a child's vocabulary and thus a child's perspective. Most of the words are either monosyllabic or disyllabic, with one notable exception in line seven "my mother's countenance could not unfrown itself." These are unusual and arresting lines in terms of diction, and they signal a change in the poem. These lines give special emphasis to the speaker's consciousness of his mother, she is not mentioned anywhere else in the poem, but her disapproval intensifies the situation.

The poem's pattern is not exact. Nor is the rhyme scheme exact. Slant rhymes like "dizzy/easy" and "pans/countenance" demonstrate that something is out of place. Like a waltz, the words move the reader great strides in one direction before swaying back the other way, leaving the reader emotionally exhausted by the end of the poem. Words like "romped" that seem pleasant or innocent dominate the first part of the poem, while aggressive words dominate the end "my right ear scraped a buckle…beat time on my head with a palm caked hard by dirt." At the same time, the word "death" appears in the first stanza and the comfort of going to bed in the final stanza. The overall effect is to sway the reader's emotion violently, as in a drunken waltz.

Order Custom Essay on An explication of "My Papa's Waltz"

There is only one example of simile in the poem, so the reader should pay special attention to its significance. In line three, the speaker hangs on "like death." It is a complex and abstract simile whose meaning is neither obvious nor stable. The fact that Roethke chooses "death" makes the reader consider his purpose. Perhaps Roethke introduces death to emphasize the danger of a situation or the darker side of the "waltz." Death hangs on in the sense that it is permanent, and perhaps the child wants to freeze this moment for the fear of what will happen if he or she lets go "But I hung on like death such waltzing was not easy." Death is something that hangs on and the speaker sees his or her younger self in terms of death.

The overall image that the reader has of the waltz depends partially on the reader's perspective. It is possible to view the poem from the father's point of view, from the mother's, and from the speaker's, but the most telling imagery in the poem surrounds the father's hands "the hand that held my wrist was battered on one knuckle." The speaker brings back a childhood impression of the father's hand. A hand holding a wrist is certainly more aggressive and domineering than a hand holding a hand. The hand holding the wrist implies both a difference in size of their hands and, perhaps, that the child "waltzes" unwillingly. The fact that the hand is "battered on one knuckle" connotes violence. The father, because of his knuckle, seems belligerent and potentially violent. The father's domineering nature in the poem reflects the title of the poem. The fact that the title is written in the singular possessive case "My Papa's Waltz" as opposed to "Our Waltz" emphasizes the control implicit in the poem.

The poem "My Papa's Waltz" directs the reader subtly to a distinct conclusion. While the poem is not about a child's hatred for his or her father, it does, however, connote physical control to the point of manipulation, and even abuse on the father's part. The waltz is dangerous, ultimately its imagery contains a disapproving mother, a battered knuckle, a buckle that repeatedly scrapes a young child's tender ear, and finally a dirt covered hand that strikes the child's head repeatedly under the guise of keeping time for the waltz. The fact that the speaker says, "you beat time on my head" instead of "kept time" reinforces this interpretation. The waltzing ritual is not about dancing; it is about a man who asserts and maintains physical control over his child even as he loses control of himself.

In Silent Witness, there are three main characters Allen, Lucy, and Robert. Allen was a senior in high school who took a particular interest in cinematography, which is what ultimately killed him. He videotaped a murder and, subsequently, the murderer, namely Robert, killed him for fear of Allen going to the cops. Lucy was Allen's neighbor and took his death very hard. Allen's mother had given her some of his personal items, including the infamous videotape. As a result, Lucy lived in constant fear that someone was stalking her to retrieve the videotape. The stalker ended up being Lucy's and Allen's mutual friend, Robert. Robert was very smart and was receiving a scholarship. It was because of his scholarship and bright future that caused Robert to kill Allen and permanently erase the fact that he had committed a murder.

The first main event in the story occurs when Allen dies. He fell off a cliff, and everyone took his death hard. Then, Allen's mom gives some of his belongings to their neighbor, Lucy, and asks her to appropriately distribute his things to his friends. Next, she tells everyone she has this peculiar tape that Allen made. After divulging this information, strange things keep happening to her. First, someone had broken into her locker. Then, her house and her school bag were ransacked. The same day, she gives her friend Jenny her green poncho to wear because it was raining which causes Jenny to get attacked as well. This is important because the assailant, whoever it was, mistook Jenny for Lucy because she had her coat and a similar bag. Finally, Lucy realized someone was really after her, and she was not just imagining it. Then, she went to her school video lab to watch the rest of the movie because the VCR at her house was broken. While she was there, Robert came in and locked her in the closet. This proved to Lucy that Robert was the stalker. When she finally got out, she confronted Robert. Robert confessed to killing Allen, and threatened to do the same to Lucy if she did not cooperate and give him the tape. Lucy, then, decided to throw him in the same closet she was in, and call the police. The police arrested Robert and took him to jail.

Do you like thriller novels? Do you like reading horror mysteries? If so, this is the book for you. Throughout the novel, you will be anxiously waiting to turn the next page. One of the really intense scenarios includes Lucy and Robert in the video lab. Robert confronts Lucy and tells her that she should give him the tape, but he won't say why. Lucy speculates he is Allen's killer, but you have to read to find out. Another thrilling scene is when Lucy is walking down the street, and a car is chasing her. She believes it to be her stalker that is ready to get her, but you have to read to find out if its her stalker trying to get her or just some lunatic playing around. There are many more scenes like these that will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to turn the page to see what will happen next. If you like this kind of excitement found within this genre of books, I highly recommend Silent Witness by Carol Ellis for a great suspense thriller.

I still remember back when Bill Gates and I first met. IT was back in the 160s at Lakeside a private school in Seattle. When we first met I thought man what a dork but then I realized being his friend could come in handy some day. So I became friends with Mr. Bill Gates, and much to my surprise he wasn't a dork, more of a nerd. He was top of the class and very bright, so my first thought was great I now have someone that can get me a passing grade. All I had to do was sit by him during class, and pretend to study with him after school. But slowly he began to grow on me and I realized he wasn't half bad, once you got past the incredibly large vocabulary and vast Star Wars knowledge. He then introduced me to the world of computers. At first I was uninterested, but he convinced me these little boxes with even smaller screens would be the future. Of course I didn't know even half of what he knew. And back then that was pretty pathetic considering there wasn't much to know. Soon after we left Lakeside he received an entry level position for a software program job, it wasn't much be he was excited. We moved into together a few weeks later to save money (along with another friend of his, Paul Allen, who seemed to be an even bigger nerd) and the entire time I could swear he didn't sleep, eat, or even go out, all he did was work on this thing, a chip which he claimed would make him money. I didn't understand it and didn't care to, in fact I remember as he explained how it worked I tuned him out and watched the latest episode of Gilligan's Island. He then started a company called Traf-O-Data, actually we started it, although I didn't know anything about computers I had faith in him and put up a third of the money with Paul putting in the other third. Unfortunately our little busy endeavor failed. We then tried to market a chip for Intel called the 8080 but unfortunately that too was unsuccessful. Soon Bill, Paul, and I started going to college, Harvard to be exact. While he had the brains to get in, I had the money, and as a result my grades weren't the greatest, but with Bill's help I actually managed to pass. I don't know how he did it, he and Paul (we were all roommates once again) were never in class, in fact at one point five weeks went by and they never seemed to leave our apartment, they were working on some new chip which they said had great potential. But one day I walked into our apartment after class and they were both incredibly excited. After I managed to calm them down, they told me they had just finished something that would make them known in the computer world, something called BASIC. And little did I know I was witnessing history, that day (or in that five week period) the world's first microcomputer software company was born, hard for even me to believe. A few weeks later they told me they had come up with a name, 'Microsoft' I had no idea that word would soon become a household name. Bill soon left Harvard in 175, and said he would be back but I had a feeling he was moving onto greater things, him and Paul, I was just sorry I couldn't be a part of it. We kept in touch, and still do. In fact I can still remember pretty much how Microsoft came to be the billion dollar corporation it is today, every time Bill had some type of breakthrough he would call and let me know the good news. IBM came to Bill later, about five years later I believe, and asked him to develop an operating system. Of course he called me He told me he had finished the operating system and wanted me to see it, he called it MS-DOS, or Microsoft Disk Operating System. I went to his house and the only thing I saw was a black screen with little white letters with a blinking cursor. I didn't quite understand the ramifications of the small blinking cursors with the white letters, but when I picked up a computer magazine on a street corner about one year later, I finally understood what Bill had done. I can't quite remember the headline on the magazine but I do remember reading this, "Bill Gates creates industry standard with MS-DOS" I called him and told him I was actually quite surprised, but then again I didn't know anything about computers so he didn't feel too bad that it had taken me a year to realize what he had accomplished. Soon after Bill called me again, and once again I found myself at his house looking at a computer screen. He told me he had once again come up with something new, something he called 'Windows' And once again I didn't quite understand this little operating system. But I later found myself experiencing deja vu when I picked up another computer magazine and saw Bill on the cover with a picture of this 'Windows' he had so proudly displayed to me earlier. For awhile I didn't get any calls from Bill and Microsoft continued to grow and grow, I was later surprised to pick up Fortune and find out that Bill was at the top on the Forbes list. It has now been 40 years since I first met Bill, a skinny little nerdy looking kid in Seattle. But he has never ceased to amaze me. While I have been a little jealous I suppose it is my own fault for not getting in on the computer thing in the beginning, but I have no regrets. I own my own multi-million dollar company and have a wonderful family. My life has been full. I think maybe just a little fuller for having known Bill, his determination was admirable and actually got me through some tougher times in life. So thanks Bill, I owe you one, give me a call sometime!

Three Men, Three Deaths

Luke -4

Good Friday. What's good about it? In mediaeval England it was called God's Friday. Said quickly (and perhaps thoughtlessly) God's Friday became 'Gd' Friday. Really, was it ever God's Friday? What did he ever do that day besides stand around uselessly? Surely it's more accurate to speak of Pilate's Friday. Because of this one Friday Pilate's name will never be forgotten. Or perhaps it's more accurate to speak of the crowd's Friday. After all, the crowd triumphed, howling for Christ's head until its bloodlust was satisfied.

In many respects there was nothing unique about this Friday. Pilate had executed many before it and would execute many after it. The crowd was neither better nor worse than any crowd in any era. The city, Jerusalem, Hier Shalem, city of peace (supposedly) was the city that had always slain the prophets. This Friday was no different.

None the less, Christians have always known that Good Friday genuinely is God's Friday. Christians have always found God's Friday anticipated repeatedly in God's dealing with a rebellious creation. As far back as Genesis 15 early-day Christians saw this day anticipated in the declaration that the offspring of woman would crush the serpent's head, the serpent symbolising sin's seduction. The sacrificial system of the older testament came to be seen not as efficacious in itself but efficacious inasmuch as the secret substance of its slain animals was the sacrifice of the Lamb of God slain on behalf of everyone everywhere. The culmination of the sacrificial system was the Day of Atonement, when Israel's sin was confessed upon the scapegoat that was then driven off. (The goat, rather than a sheep, as our Lord's parable would make plain centuries later; the goat typified rejection at God's hand.) Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, was serving as priest in the temple's sacrifice-service when he was told that the son to be born to him would herald the one whose rejection at the hand of the Father would make possible our acceptance.

I -- Israel's centuries-long preoccupation with sacrifice adds up to something the early church knew unshakeably one died for sin. Jesus of Nazareth, Son of God and Messiah of Israel; this one died for sin. The apostles are united in their conviction of this truth. Mark insists that Jesus came to give himself a ransom for us. Peter insists that Jesus bore our sins in his body on the tree. John speaks repeatedly of our Lord's hour, and by it means only his death. Paul writes, Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us.

It's no wonder that so much of the church is feeble today when so much of the church denies the centrality and cruciality and efficacy of the cross. How central is it to the apostolic mind and heart? Fifty per cent of the written gospels discusses one week only of Christ's life, the last week. How crucial is it? When Jesus himself speaks of the purpose of his coming and when his followers speak of the purpose of his coming they all point to the singular event of the cross. How efficacious is it? Paul says that the only sermon he has in his briefcase (which sermon, we should note, he will therefore have to repeat again and again) is a sermon about the cross. He calls it the word of the cross. He tells any and all that he intends to speak only of Jesus Christ and him crucified. With what result? He has seen the hardened unbeliever moved to repentance and the contemptuous scoffer moved to surrender and the uncomprehending dabbler brought to apprehend the wisdom and work of God apart from which the dabbler would still be uncomprehending and unsaved.

A minute ago I spoke of the goat on which the sin of Israel was laid (as it were) on the Day of Atonement. I said that a goat, unlike a sheep, betokened rejection. The Son of God was rejected on Good Friday. His cry of dereliction can mean nothing else. Yet we mustn't think that the Father cruelly rejected the Son while the Son lovingly identified himself with sinners. Son of is a Hebrew expression meaning of the same nature as. To speak of Jesus as Son of God is to say that Father and Son are one in their nature, one in their purpose, one in its implementation. We must never think that the Father severely judges sin while the Son mercifully bears that judgement. Father and Son are one in their judgement upon sin and one in their suffering the penalty of sin. Then to say that the Son tasted the most anguished rejection at the Father's hand is to say that the Father's heart was seared with the self-same anguish. To say that Jesus died for sin and therein tasted the bitterest death (utter alienation from his Father) is to say that the Father himself tasted the bitterest self-alienation.

All of this adds up to the centrality, cruciality and efficacy of the cross provision was made for us through the sacrifice of that crucified One who died for sin. To be sure, our Lord wasn't the only person crucified on Good Friday. Still, his crucifixion was unique identified as he was with all humankind, he made provision for all. He, he alone, died for sin.

II -- The provision our Lord made for you and me he plainly made for the two men who died alongside him. One of them, it should pain us to say, died in sin. This man spurned the provision made for him.

Part II of the sermon, I must tell you, isn't going to be a pleasant discussion, because part II speaks of loss; ultimate loss, indescribable loss, eternal loss. Still, we can no more deny our Lord's teaching here than we can deny his teaching of the Sermon on the Mount. The Jesus whose teachings some of them Pollyanna people select happens to be the Jesus who warned of ultimate loss every day.

Luke tells us a construction accident occurred in first century Palestine when a tower fell on the men building it. It killed them. Some feisty Galileeans decided to test Pilate's patience when they fomented an insurrection. Pilate executed them. Jesus insisted that the crushed workmen and the executed insurrectionists were no greater sinners than anyone else. Nevertheless, says Jesus in making a point out of these events for the benefit of his hearers, unless you repent you will all likewise perish. (Luke 11-5)

Do you know whom you should fear?, Jesus asked on another occasion, Don't fear humans! What can they do to you, ultimately? You should fear him who can destroy both body and soul in hell. (Matthew 108) I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. (John 81) You're lying, his enemies jeered at him. Am I?, said Jesus, Where I'm going, you can't come. You will die in your sin. (John 81) Jesus maintained that many would die in their sin. Then it shouldn't surprise us, however much it should horrify us, that one fellow in particular did just that.

Scripture speaks of the riches of God's kindness and forbearance and patience. (Rom. 4) We are told that we mustn't presume upon God's kindness and forbearance and patience. We mustn't presume upon them just because they are meant to lead us to repentance. God's kindness and forbearance and patience are never meant to let us indulge our sin but always and only to lead us to repentance. In the Hebrew bible repentance is a turning towards God, a turning towards God that is really a returning to him who has made us, has suffered for us and now claims us. When the Hebrew mind hears of returning to God it thinks in terms of three vivid pictures of returning in everyday life. The first is of an unfaithful wife returning to her husband; the second is of idol-worshippers returning to the true and living God; the third is of rebel subjects returning to their rightful ruler. The unfaithful wife returns to longstanding love. The idol-worshippers return to truth, to substance, to solidity. The rebel subjects return to legitimate authority.

The riches of God's kindness and forbearance and patience are meant to induce repentance in us as we return to him to whom we've been unfaithful, return to him whose truth we've trifled with, return to him whose authority we've disregarded.

The unrepentant fellow who was crucified alongside Jesus; unrepentant, he frittered away the day of God's kindness and forbearance and patience. Unrepentant, he refused to turn towards God, refused to return to faithful love and shining truth and rightful authority. Unrepentant, he simply died in sin.

Our Lord had said, I am the light of the world; anyone who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. Don't give us that!, the disdainful had said then as they say now. You should know, then, our Lord had continued, that where I'm going you can't come. You'll die in your sin.

III -- The third fellow, however, died to sin. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. And our Lord's reply we all know Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise. (Luke 4-)

What did the fellow mean when he said, Jesus, remember me? What's the force of remember? Did the dying felon mean, Think of me once in a while? Recall me nostalgically now and then? In fact the fellow meant something very different. Jewish as he was and therefore possessed of a Hebrew mind, he knew that when God remembers someone, that person is granted the innermost longing of his heart, his profoundest aspiration. Hannah of old was publicly distraught and privately frantic on account of her childlessness. Then God remembered her, we are told, and she became pregnant with Samuel; with Sam-u-el, whose name means, I have asked him of God.

The man dying alongside Jesus, penitent where his partner-in-crime had remained impenitent; this fellow asked Jesus to remember him. He wanted granted the innermost longing of his heart and his profoundest aspiration. What was it? We can tell on the basis of what was granted him Forever with me, the sin-bleaching one, in paradise forever, today.

In view of the fact that the word remember is richer in Hebrew than ever we imagined, we should also probe the Hebrew significance of today. Throughout the Hebrew bible today refers to the event of God's incursion, the event of God's visitation. When today occurs God's visitation is upon us, which visitation we can't control, can't manipulate, can't postpone and then bring back when we are more in the mood or ready for something less inconvenient. Today means God has loomed before us now, is acting upon us and speaking to us now, and we trifle with him at our peril.

Today, when you hear God's voice, don't harden your hearts, both the psalmist and the writer of Hebrews warn us. (Heb. 47) Today I must stay at your house, Jesus tells Zacchaeus, only to announce at the conclusion of the meal, Today salvation has come to your house. (Luke 14, 50) When Jesus declares the paralysed man forgiven and sets him back on his feet as well, the bystanders, we are told, were filled with awe and said, 'We have seen remarkable things today.' (Luke 56. NIV) Remarkable? Of course! Today means that eternity has intersected time and the hour of someone's visitation is upon her.

The penitent criminal knew that his last moment was also the time of his visitation. Our Lord knew it too. He knew that his proximity to the dying man was God's visitation. The result of this visitation was that the man was remembered. The man was granted his heart's innermost longing and his profoundest aspiration; namely, that his sin be purged and he himself be cherished eternally. At the moment of his visitation the man died to sin. To be sure, he could die to it only because someone else had been appointed to die for it. Still, unquestionably he died to it as surely as his accomplice died in it.

IV -- The longer I live the more impressed I am at the unitary voice with which scripture speaks. Decades after the event of Good Friday apostles were speaking of the event in a manner consistent with those who had been eyewitnesses of it. Centuries before the event prophets spoke of the event in the same way. The prophet Ezekiel had written, Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? (Eze. 18) Paul would write to young Timothy, God our Saviour…desires all to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Tim. 4) Peter would write, The Lord…is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should repent. ( Peter )

God desires all to be saved, even though not all desire themselves saved. He takes no pleasure in the loss of anyone. And in the days of his earthly ministry the Incarnate One himself cried before the city, How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not. (Matt. 7) Exactly. One fellow died in sin as surely as another fellow died to it. Yet God desires all to be saved and permits all to be saved just because the Son of God died for it.

Then whose Friday is it? Pilate's Friday? The crowd's? Good Friday is and always will be God's Friday. By God's grace it was also the penitent fellow's Friday. By God's grace it has been my Friday too, for years now. And by his grace it may be yours as well

WAR IN IRAQ

Events have moved us into war with Iraq. Iraq needed to disarm and Saddam Hussein needed to be removed from power to have avoided the war. The period from the end of the first Gulf War in 11 to the beginning of the second Gulf war in 00 saw continuous military pressure on Iraq by the United States and the United Kingdom. The US-UK launched major air strikes against Iraq on several occasions, as well as deploying threatening forces in Iraqs proximity and operating military air patrols to enforce no-fly zones. In early 00, the Bush administration announced that it considered Iraq to be part of an axis of evil and threats of a US-led war for regime change got steadily louder throughout the spring and summer. By September, it had become clear that Washington was planning a full-scale invasion, as it won authorization for military action from the US Congress. President Bush had said that the U.S. would unleash war against Iraq unless Saddam Hussein fled his country within 48 hours. Theres only one thing Saddam Hussein could have done to avoid U.S.-led military action against Iraq and that was full disarmament. The U.S. troops were ready for war long before the war started. Bush set a course for war without backing after months of trying to persuade Saddam to disarm and that said that Saddam could not retain power even by beginning to disarm his nation of weapons of mass destruction. A war with Iraq will cost us a lot of lives, military and civilians. War and terrorism can and will touch any of us in a variety of ways, personally and geo-politically. Iraq's response to the demand that the missiles be destroyed was the benchmark test of Iraqi cooperation during a crucial showdown at the UN Security Council. Saddams game plan had been to do the minimum necessary to avoid a war he cant win. That means destroying the missiles, in the hope that it would have put UN authorization for war beyond President Bushs reach.

The U.S. has been patient, tried sanctions and gave Iraq a resolution for time to disarm. Saddam Hussein has defied all efforts (Paneth 1). Saddam has a history of hating Americans and has ties to terrorists and is a destabilizing force in the Middle East. After twelve years of diplomacy and weapons inspections our good faith has not been returned. The Iraqi regime has used diplomacy as a ploy to gain time and advantage. About 100 US Special Forces members and more than 50 Central Intelligence Agency officers have been operating in small groups inside Iraq for at least four months, searching for Scud missile launchers, monitoring oil fields, marking minefield sites, and using lasers to help US pilots bomb Iraqi air-defense systems. The operations, which also have included small numbers of Jordanian, British, and Australian commandos, are considered by many analysts to be part of the opening phase of a war against Iraq, even though the Bush administration has agreed to a schedule of UN weapons inspections

Citizens long to see evidence that our leaders are working intelligently and diligently for peace than for war. Even as forces were mobilized President Bush stated that avoidance of war was foremost and that Saddam must willfully disarm or be exiled (Loven ). This is a serious time to reflect deeply on our responsibility as citizens who stand for peace, human rights and democracy. The U.S. will provide security against those who spread chaos, settle scores or threaten Iraq. Destroying weapons of mass destruction will be lead by the U.S. (Holland 1). War with Iraq could cost us nearly 5 billion dollars. A shorter war would mean less spending, but the costs could be higher if Iraq uses chemical or biological weapons on U.S. troops, or if it sets fire to oil fields as it did in Kuwait in the Gulf War.

The U.S., Britain, and Spain propose that Iraq had missed its last chance to disarm. The Australian government agreed to commit troops to military action against Iraq. Germany, France, China, and Russia called for full and effective disarmament through peaceful means (Security ). These governments share our assessment of the danger, but not our resolve to meet it. The war could throw the Islamic world into turmoil and a crisis of this kind should be solved by exclusively peaceful means. China, France and Russia would have used their veto power to block the war resolution if there had been a vote. They believe the inspectors need more time. Canada had said that if military action was launched without a new resolution they would not participate. Turkey's parliament rejected a measure that would have let the U.S. base 6,000 troops in Turkey so the troops could move against Iraq from the north. South African disarmament experts are convinced Iraq is disarming and that Iraq needs more time (Mroue ). The Egyptians say Iraq is fully responsible for the current crisis in the Middle East. For the past six years, PNAC has lobbied former President Clinton and Bush heavily to initiate a war in Iraq and remove Saddam Hussein from power, claiming the country posed a serious threat to the U.S. and its allies because of its ability to develop weapons of mass destruction.

"The U.N. weapons inspectors are saying that Baghdad is cooperating with inspections and that some documents presented to them as evidence were forged". Hans Blix states that the Iraqi government is complying with inspections of weapons of mass destruction program" (Kole 1). According to the Iraq Journal the Al-Nassr Compound that was claimed to be a factory of weapons of mass destruction was disputed by Prime Minister Amin to be "blatant fabrications"(Scahill 1). Iraq invited anyone who wanted to come to inspect the Al-Nassr Compound to verify Iraq was in line with U.N. disarmament resolutions (Scahill ).The Iraqi government was withholding information on weapons of mass destruction and the Iraqi government was thumbing their nose at U.N. weapons inspectors and not being forthcoming and this in turn was a threat to world peace (Paneth ). The Iraqi regime has repeatedly defied the will of the international community since the end of the Persian Gulf War twelve years ago by violating numerous U.N. Security Council resolutions demanding that it give up its weapons of mass destruction. Iraq has been accused of financing suicide bombers and terrorist (Fournier ). Using chemical, biological or, one day, nuclear weapons obtained with the help of Iraq, the terrorists could fulfill their stated ambitions and kill thousands or hundreds of thousands of innocent people in our country or any other country. Iraq violated a U.N. resolution by moving a missile system within range of troops in Kuwait. U.S. Central Command targeted a mobile surface-to-surface missile system located near Basra, about 45 miles southeast of Baghdad. The Iraqi military has moved several dozen heavy transport trucks north of Baghdad, signaling the possible movement of an Iraqi heavy armored division. Some believe that Iraq is unlikely to use chemical or biological weapons to defend itself because world opinion would turn against it. The Iraqi government has also been highly suspicious of the UN inspection teams, dating to 18 when it found that a few people on the teams were US Special Forces members. In the 10s, Special Forces and CIA officers traveled undercover to various parts of Iraq, mostly in the northern areas dominated by the Kurds, where distrust of US intentions runs deep because of Washingtons unwillingness to remove Hussein in the early part of the decade. In other parts of Iraq, Special Forces members are operating in small teams on a variety of missions. These are taking place in areas populated largely by Shiite Muslims around Basra, in the south, where mistrust of the Baghdad government is rife; in the western desert near the Jordanian border; and even close to Baghdad. They are doing this in parallel with the UN weapons inspectors. These efforts are not going to come as a surprise to the Brits, or the French, or the Russians, or the Chinese. What really matters is whether they are caught doing it publicly, because that would create political problems for the administration. Documentation was provided on anthrax and the VX nerve agent just recently. This should have been disclosed in the documents sent to the U.N. last year (Kole ). Al-Samoud missiles were found and Iraq faced the decision to destroy them. Saddam says the Al-Samoud did not violate the U.N. range restrictions of mile limit (Bush ). The Al-Samoud missiles were being destroyed slowly because they exceed the mile limit (Fox 1). There is recent and fresh evidence that Iraq is planning to use chemical weapons, perhaps against U.S. forces or Iraqi citizens. Some groups believe that the U.S. was using the threat of war to control the oil fields in Iraq. As late as 188, Dow Chemical provided $1.5 million worth of chemical pesticides to Iraq, despite the documented fear that these chemicals would be weaponized. Others feel that no evidence or proof of a weapons program in Iraq had been found ( Kole 1). The American Friends Service Committee does not believe that there is any evidence that Iraq has nuclear weapons. They believe that the American people do not believe this war makes any sense (Conflict 1). Some veterans were saying "no to war in Iraq". They believe that the only real reason for the war would be for us to be attacked and Except for September 11, we have not been attacked (Veterans 1). Some veterans stand behind their country and the President of the U.S. A group calling itself September 11 sent terror threats to the U.S., Australian and British embassies in New Zealand warning it has 55 pounds of cyanide to use against American interests when Iraq is attacked. Due to the war there may be terror attacks on the U.S. and National Security has been raised to protect the U.S. (Meserve 1). Others wonder why we can have weapons of mass destruction but Iraq can't. The President has to go through proper protocol and take steps to use our weapons and Saddam does as he pleases. He has already used them on his own people (Paneth ).

Poll after poll shows a large majority of Americans supported military action against Saddam Hussein. But most were in no hurry, preferring to wait for more weapons inspections, more diplomacy, and more allies standing by the United States. President Bush rallied to win backing for military disarmament of Iraq and to promote better rights for the Iraqi people (Loven ). The military was ready to begin the military action in Iraq when President Bush gave the order. Surveys consistently show the U.S. public wants U.N. approval for war on Iraq, even though in at least one recent poll people expressed little confidence in the United Nations. The U.N. has been criticized for not living up to its responsibilities. Beneath the desire to back President Bush and the belief Saddam is a menace the polls track an undercurrent of concern about the possibility of sending in U.S. troops while other nations are pressing for alternatives. If done right, this campaign against Saddam Hussein could bring forth a fundamental shift in the region toward more democratic governments. This is the best possible way to stamp out extremist factions that spread hate and nurture terrorists.

People are looking to the United Nations for reassurance, not necessarily out of esteem for the world body, but because they find the accusations of Iraqi weapons violations too complicated to sort out for themselves. The U.S. foreign policy is aimed at ensuring freedom, justice, and democracy around the world. I believe our decision on Iraq will affect our future, our children and grandchildren in ways we can not predict. We need to get rid of all weapons of mass destruction. But I wonder if killing people is right. I guess I have mixed emotions on the subject. I believe that Iraq needs to be disarmed or face the consequences. There are so many reasons to be for and to be against the war in Iraq. I read about how people live during a war, afraid to go outside, afraid to do anything. Being afraid of any terrorist's attacks that may come our way. I have supported President Bush's Decision. President Bush is right in saying we need to get rid of weapons of mass destruction. Any kind of chemical or biological weapons need to be destroyed. Now is the time to put aside debates and reflect on the sacrifice of nearly a quarter of a million Americans. When the Twin Towers collapsed in New York, the nation was awed by the willingness of a brave few who put their own lives at risk in service to others. Their efforts helped unearth a deep wellspring of pride in the country. Now is another time for awe, inspired by promising men and women who are putting themselves at risk to minimize our own. If Saddam Hussein had been removed from power and all weapons of mass destruction had been disarmed we would not be at war with Iraq. This nation is at war. Bombs and rockets are falling. Soldiers on both sides are being wounded and killed. In the face of that reality our hearts and minds are torn. We want to believe that the cause is just and that there will be greater freedom and security throughout the world because of this military involvement. Still, we find it hard to believe that the nations of the world cant seem to come up with any effective way to settle these besides the use of violence. People of conscience and good will are divided and separated on these issues. As we go into war we should pray for the men and women fighting for our country and our freedom. Pray for world peace.
