He introduced some very interesting facts and figures that were up to date statistics. He began the seminar with an introduction that consisted of the history and origin of AIDS. The acronym stands for Aquirred Immuno Deficiency Syndrome. The name suggests exactly what it is. AIDS is a disease that has to be aquirred by an individual, it does not just appear, it must be contracted somehow. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how depression differs among genders and how depression differs in young adulthood and late adulthood. These two topics will be investigated in depth using current research.

In order to fully examine these two questions we must first define what depression is. Every article, journal, textbook and other source of information I have viewed so far agree that depression is not just feelings of sadness that temporarily affect our moods. Depression is more of a ¡§whole body¡¨ illness that affects our thinking, physical health, emotions and has a physiological component. It is a disorder that greatly affects thought and feelings. There are several different types of depression, Bipolar depression , clinical, and post partum. And even those classifications branch off to several other disorders such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). There is no one single cause of depression either, it can result from various genetic, psychological and environmental factors. Upon examining multiple pieces of research I have come to see how complex and wide ranging the term depression is.

In order to examine depression further, causes of the disorder should be taken into full consideration. As listed above there are multiple causes and we will begin with the physiological aspect first. As we all know the brain has major chemical components consisting of substances that affect our moods such as Serotonin and norepinephrine. These chemicals are neurotransmitters and have to be balanced in order for us to feel and function as normally. A neurotransmitter is defined as chemicals used by nerve cells to communicate. Imbalance or reduction of these chemicals, result in many disorders including depression. When a brain lacks these neurotransmitters it also lacks the ability for normal functioning of moods, sleep, appetite and sex drive. This biological aspect is the basis of all medication aimed at treating depressed individuals.

The next major cause of depression is social environmental factors. These factors are wide ranging and are all major causes of stress. We begin with life events such as loss of loved ones, illness and divorce. These misfortunes have negative effects on the body and cause depression. In fact, stress has major negative affects on the body including a wide range of diseases including heart disease. Also, continuous exposure to violence, abuse, neglect or poverty can lead to chemical imbalances which make susceptible people more vulnerable to depression.

The last major cause of depression is genetics. Genetics is a key factor in diagnosing depression. Like many other illness's depression tends to run in families. Children have 10-1% increased chance of developing depression if their parents have the disorder. This is due to brain chemicals being in control of genetic makeup.

People who suffer from depression usually suffer the same symptoms with some exceptions. Not everyone who is depressed experiences every single symptom. The list below is comprised of the most common symptoms of depression

„ Persistent sadness, anxious moods

„ Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities

„ Irritability, restlessness, excessive crying

„ Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and suicide

„ Decreased energy, fatigue abnormal sleep cycles

„ Weight loss or overeating

„ Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions

Recurring aches and pains that do not respond to medical treatment

Going through the list I'm sure most of us have expe
