Examples of greed and the affect that it has can been seen in many places with different people around the world. The English Empire in the 100's, Hitler, and Saddam Hussein all have the similar traits of greed. Because of that, their defeat was quickly off hand. The English Empire ended when their thirst for world conquest dominated their ability to rule their home nation. In consequence, they lost their new colonies to rebellion. Hitler's overwhelming thirst for control ended his life when he could no longer see another point of view and could only recognize his deranged ideas for a perfect society. Saddam Hussein's greedy attitude cost him his nation, his people, and his own children. All these examples show that when mankind becomes selfish and their actions are persuaded by desire, their downfall begins which can only end in death because satisfaction will never be achieved.

Erich Fromm agrees that satisfaction will never be achieved. He once said "Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in a endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction." In that quote, Fromm understands that with human nature, no one can be satisfied.

Even from birth humans are taught that nothing is ever enough. During birthdays, celebrations, and holidays numerous gifts are exchanged. Many times we forget that it's not actually what you get, it's the thought that counts. In today's society we look at the value of the gift first. The more expensive the better it is. We have forgotten about sentimental value or the idea of just getting something for someone else. This all adds up to the whole idea that the more "stuff" you have the better you're off.

The classic novel, A Christmas Carol, is the embodiment of Fromm's beliefs. Here it is with the character Scrooge who is a man very stingy with his money, food, and material possessions. He also believes that the more you have the better you are. And he is not willing at all to give up anything to anyone. Even a lump of coal.

Black Beauty

Black Beauty was written by the British author Anna Sewell (18O¡ª¡ª1878). It was finished in 1877 and it was her only book. Because of an injury in her childhood, she became invalid and had to rely on a carriage drawn by horse for transportation. With the help of horses in her childhood, she had a strong love for them and also had a strong will to let out the true lives of them in order to expose the how cruelly the human beings treat their animal friends.(1)

This novel was written in first person style about the whole life with twists and turns of a horse ---- Black Beauty. He is born in a large pleasant meadow of a fazenda and he is taught to be gentle and good by his mother. His parents both have a great name in good temper, so he learns manners from childhood ------ he never even kicks or bites in play. As his owner of that fazenda is a good and kind man, he has a happy time. It has all gone, however, since he grows up. He is sold from one owner to another and each owner seems to have a worse temper. From a horse of a gentleman to a coolie horse, he experiences a lot. He finally knows how hard to be a horse and how cruel the humans are.

As a horse Black Beauty doesn¡¯t have a real freedom, he has to wear a saddle and a bridle even wear a collar, a crupper, and a breeching. Even he has a kind owner, still he cannot escape the destine that he is only a horse. He has to be broken in ----- that means he has to be taught what a horse should wear and to obey his owner. So from the beginning, we suffer what he suffers and we enjoy we he enjoys. Also there is a fear in Black Beauty towards his future, especially when a new owner appears. He will wonder Will he be as kind as his first owner? or will he be as stupid or cruel as his former owner. Facing the fatuity and barbarity of human being, Black Beauty feels helpless and he cannot even escape from this. In his childhood, the first time for him to see the death is in a hunt, when a horse dies, it is just for hunting for hares. And even in the near future, he gets to know that the dead horse is his unknown brother. What a sad scene, as I have read here. Also it is his first time to know that humans are also cruel even the joy of humans are based on the death of animals.

There are also horses of bad tempers, however, for Black Beauty these horses are even better than humans, because some owners are so stupid that they vent on the horses when they cannot do things right. So no matter how good a horse is, it cannot get the candid treatment. So that is the problem that Anna Sewell opposes. The author gives the horse speaking ability to express her will for animals.

The author was a animal lover especially horses which accompanies with her for nearly a whole life, so she spent about 8 years finishing this book even when she was ill in bed. Unfortunately, she died soon after the book was published. So this book emphasizes on humanity. Therefore, it influences the readers from generation to generation and is well-known. It tells us to love animals, to treat them well and we should show our mercy to them, but not our inexorability. Animals cannot speak for themselves, therefore human should think of the right of the animals, otherwise one day we will suffer the punishment of the nature.

As the author gives us a lively feeling of a horse, the readers easily imagines and ponders. It also gives space to judge the characteristics of the figures in the book and the humanity behind book. When we are delight with joy of Black Beauty, we also experience the suffering in his mind.

What is more, it is not only a book about horses or their relationship with human, but also the book forming a vivid life of the ordinary life in the 1870¡¯s ------ the carriages rushing through the streets with gentlemen in it, the trade of horse market and hustle and bustle on the streets. Through the delineation by the author, we will admire her for her kindness towards animals and her mercifulness.

Nutrition

Nutrition is the relationship of foods to the health of the human body. Proper nutrition means that you are receiving enough foods and supplements for the body to function at optimal capacity. It is important to remember that no single nutrient or activity can maintain optimal health and well being, although it has been proven that some nutrients are more important than others. All of the nutrients are necessary in different amounts in order to maintain proper health. There are six main types of nutrients used to maintain body health. They are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and most importantly water. They all must be balanced for the body to function properly. A good way to choose the right amount of your daily diet is to follow a food pyramid which contains the five major food groups; fats and oils, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, grains, and meats. Of course food alone isn't the key to a longer and healthier life. Good nutrition should be part of an overall healthy lifestyle, which also includes regular exercise, not smoking or drinking excessively, free of drugs, even stress management and limiting exposure to environmental hazards all connect to nutrition.

Nutrients are divided into five major groups; proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Each of these food components have a special function in the body, and all of them together are needed for overall health. The body uses energy to function and keep itself at a constant temperature. Scientists have been able to find out that the body gets its fuel from carbohydrates, fats, and protein. We will examine each food group separately and see how they relate to the overall health of our bodies mentally and physically.

Carbohydrate foods come from plants and are the main source of energy for all body functions. This makes sense, as carbohydrates contain the suns radiant energy, as captured in plant life. They are the best energy source we have and keep the digestive system fit and provide nutrients for the brain and nervous system. Carbohydrates are basically sugar and starch. Apples, oranges, potatoes, grains, candy, bread… are all carbohydrates. Carbohydrates break down into glucose molecules. When used as energy, carbohydrates become fuel for our muscles and brain. If your body does not have any use for the glucose, it is converted into glycogen and stored in the liver and muscles as an energy reserve. Crabs are divided in two categories Simple Carbohydrates; basically blood sugar or glucose, and Complex Carbohydrates; these are found in foods prepared with grains and vegetables. Research has proven that a daily diet high in carbohydrates is helpful. The right amount can decrease the risk of colon cancer and heart despises. The best sources for carbohydrates are grains, potatoes, vegetables, and fruits.

Write my Essay on nutrition

Fats are probably the most popular from all the other food groups, it is also the most avoided and hated. It has been a common rumor for centuries that fat in the diet is bad, but what people don't know is that the body must need a small percentage of fat in order to function properly. Fat provides energy by giving calories to the body. They are the most concentrated source of energy in the diet and play an important role in building the membranes that surround our cells and in helping blood to clot. Once digested and absorbed, fats help the body absorb certain vitamins. The body also uses this stored fat in order to cushion vital organs and protect us from extreme cold and heat. Fats come from two kinds of food, plant foods (e.g. vegetables, grains and fruit) and animal foods (e.g. meat, poultry and dairy products). Fats contain more than twice as many calories per gram than do protein or carbohydrates. There are three kinds of fats saturated fats, monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. Saturated fats help the body make cholesterol and are strong contributors to raising the blood cholesterol level. They are found primarily in animal foods, and some vegetable oils commonly used in food processing (palm and coconut oils). Monounsaturated fats are commonly found in olive and peanut oils, and may be helpful in lowering cholesterol. Polyunsaturated fats help to lower blood cholesterol levels. They are found in foods such as vegetables, fruit and grain. So the fact of consuming fat in our diet is not the problem it is our own choices of what kind and amount we eat. Best sources of fat are margarine, vegetable/plant oils, nuts, meats, cheese, and cream.

Proteins are essential to maintaining the structure and function of all life-the word itself is derived from the Greek word protos, meaning primary or first. Proteins are vital for the growth, repair, and maintenance of muscles, blood, internal organs, skin, hair, and nails. As a child grows, his muscles are built from proteins. A person with burns or open sores needs protein to heal these wounds. Proteins work by being broken down into smaller components called amino acids which are the building Blocks of the body. Besides building cells and repairing tissue, they form antibodies to combat invading bacteria & viruses; they are part of the enzyme & hormonal system; they build nucleoproteins (RNA & DNA); they carry oxygen throughout the body and participate in muscle activity. When carbohydrates, starches, or fats are unavailable, these acids are rebuilt so that protein can be used to supply energy. Most people think only of meat when considering protein sources, and meat is an excellent source of protein. Unfortunately, depending solely on meat is problematic. Eating too much meat may result in too many purines, which results in to uric acid that eventually turn into gout and kidney stones. Everyone needs some protein everyday. How much is needed depends on body size, rate of growth, and each persons healing requirements. The best sources of protein are eggs, milk, fish, meat, poultry, and nuts.

Vitamins and Minerals help our bodies use carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. In most cases, vitamins cannot be made by the body and must be taken from food. Vitamins are necessary for growth, healthy skin, teeth and eyes, and cell formation. They are also important in digestion, mental alertness, and resistance to bacterial infections. All natural vitamins are found only in living things, plants and animals. Good sources of vitamins are meat, fish, poultry, milk, fruit, breads, and cereals. There are 1 known vitamins, 4 fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E, and K. The water- soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B-vitamin complex. A lot of people think vitamins can replace food. They cannot. If you eat a variety of nutritious foods, you shouldnt need vitamin supplements. Taking more nutrients than your body needs wont give you any more energy, but will prevent nutritional deficiency diseases. Minerals are also a major part of nutrition; they are nutrients that exist in the body in organic and inorganic combinations. Even though only about 4 to 5 percent of the body weight is mineral matter, minerals are important to overall mental and physical health.

First of all, thinking that I am going to visit my parents can make me happy. This

is the first time that I am apart from my parents since I came to New York. I have not

seen them since they moved to California. I miss my parents so much and I really want

to see them as soon as I can. I know that they miss me too. That is why thinking about

them makes me happy.

Additionally, talking to my friends makes me feel good. My friends help

me and listen to me and they will console me when I have troubles. For example.

once I was in trouble. Someone was talking badly about me. I was disappointed about

that person and very sad. I called my friend and I told them about my problem. they

really understood and consoled me and said things to make me happy. After talking to

my friends, I felt better and more comfortable. That is what I mean when I say that

talking to my friend is another way I feel happy.

Similarly, I really feel happy when I listen to music. I like Pop music. Its

melodies are miraculous and harmonious. Sometimes the rhythms are slow, and then it is

like a fire and wants to burn people who are listening to it. The music not only makes me

want to listen, but also makes me feel at ease. It is really great when I listen to it in my

happy every time I listen to it.

As you can see, I do not need something special to make me happy, just thinking

The Odyssey The Book and Movie

There have been many great books, which have been made into movies. The Odyssey, an epic written by Homer, has been made into a movie depicting the book, but the movies are not always accurate to the books. Some movies might have some important details missing from the adventures and these details can sometimes change the whole original story. In the odyssey there are many bits and pieces separating the book and movie.

In the book after the Battle of Troy Odysseus and his men sail to the island of the Lotus Eaters, where they stay for a little while. The Lotus Eaters treat them well and offer them food and drink. The Lotus-eaters offer them the rare and unusual flower called lotus and Odysseus's men accept the lotus, and eat it thinking that it is food, but it turns out that the Lotus causes memory loss. In puts them into a trance where they have no cares. Odysseus's men are forced off the island by the others and put back on the ship. His men were then put in to a stage of sorrow because they had to leave the Lotus Eaters. After sailing off the island of the Lotus Eaters they come upon the Land of the Cyclops, where they also face many trials and tribulations. When Odysseus and his men enter the Land of the Cyclops they enter the cave of Polytheimus and find food and drink. They help themselves to everything, but they do not know what is going to befall them when Polytheimus enters. When Polytheimus enters his cave Odysseus and his men hide in the corner of the cave behind the sheep, but they do get noticed by Polytheimus. Polytheimus asks Odysseus for his name and Odysseus replies back saying his name is no man. Polytheimus holds them prisoners in his cave but Odysseus comes up with an idea. Odysseus gets Polytheimus drunk and then attacks him with a spear in the eye and then they escape from Polytheimus's cave. When Odysseus and his men are on the boat Odysseus taunts Polytheimus and for those words he hurls two huge boulders at the ship, and they both barely miss.Help with essay on the oddysey

Everything seems right in the movie, but instead of going straight to the island of the Lotus Eaters Odysseus and his men travel straight to the Land of the Cyclops after the battle of Troy. When Odysseus and his men are in the cave of Polytheimus, they do not hide in the movie. Instead they stand grazing up at the mighty Cyclops and when Polytheimus asks Odysseus for his name Odysseus said his name nobody instead of no man. Also when Odysseus tries to get the Cyclops drunk he has one of his men play the flute to relax Polytheimus before they attack, but that is not mentioned in the book. After they escape in the book Polytheimus hurls two rocks at Odysseus's ship, but in the movie he throws only one.

After Odysseus loses all his men in the movie he comes upon Calypso's Island. Odysseus ends up spending two years on the island and he shares love with Calypso for those two years, but after two years Zeus forces Calypso to let Odysseus go. Also in the movie Telemachus becomes destined to find his father so he sets sail in search of his father and he first goes to Sparta to have some questions answered about his father.

There are also many differences in these parts of the movie as well. After he loses his men everything seems all right, but Odysseus never falls upon Calypso's Island in the book. He never spends two years there nor does he make love to Calypso. Telemachus is very anxious about his father, but he never goes to Sparta to get answers about his father.

Often books and movies are often thought as being the same, but there can be many major differences. In the Odyssey there is places unmentioned in the movie, but there are extra things that are never mentioned in the book. The movie changes thoughts about the book and it can also changes some of the plot and setting as well. Odysseus's adventure is flipped around in the movie and there are extra characters that we have no idea about until we watch the movie. Overall there are very major differences between the movie and the book.

In the movie The Joy Luck Club the director Wayne Wang uses techniques to portray the film to make the themes and issues come across more appealing to the viewer. The three scenes that stood out are the ones where Lindo's mother is speaking to the matchmaker and mother in law about giving her daughter away to be married at the age of 15, the scene where Ying Ying is in Lena's apartment also known as the tiger scene and the last scene is Junes reunion with her abandoned twin sisters in China. These three scenes are all different in the way they are explored with different themes and issues by the way they are directed.

Lindo's family was poverty stricken, as daughters were seen as worthless her mother summoned the matchmaker to make a match for her daughter. As soon as Lindo enters the frame she is walking alone, showing her independence the camera follows Lindo with a panning shot. When Lindo enters the frame she is holding a red kite symbolising prosperity as well as the ability for freedom with no limitations. As Lindo walks in on the meeting her mother is having with the matchmaker and her future mother in law she steps up onto a rock, which creates a sense of power at the same time Lindo shows them that she wont be restricted once being married off. The long shot of the meeting shows no emotion, the way Wayne Wang has seated the three women is reminiscent of a battle as the mother in law and matchmaker are facing the mother as if the mother is unsure with her decision to give Lindo away, the door way in the background of the scene shows there is a new beginning once stepping inside the darkness of the room showing the unknown and mystery with the light showing a sense of direction. There is a medium shot of Lindo and she is fiddling with her kite but at the same time holding on tightly this represents her fear of being restricted of her prosperity and freedom as she throws the kite away in a later frame it shows her understanding of her arranged marriage by the matchmaker when doing this it shows her loss of opportunities as she knows she is trapped.

The tones that are projected from Lindo and her mother is fear of rejection, Lindo's mother is concerned with Lindo's acceptance by her future family for the reason that she is openhandedly given Lindo off to be married for a better opportunity at life, and being accepted into the house hold is a big ordeal to a mother as she has promised Lindo would be a good and obedient daughter in law. Lindo's concern for fear of rejection is somewhat different to that of her mothers because she wants to be accepted only because she has no other option and to be accepted is better than not being accepted at all. Whilst Lindo's mother is having slight regrets by her facial expressions during a close up of her face she would also be excited for Lindo as she is having the opportunity to live with a wealthy family.

In the scene where Ying Ying is in Lena's apartment the darkness of the shadows creates a sense of mystery, throughout the scene Ying Ying is talking bout the tiger, Wayne Wang has played with the shadows using the vertical blinds as a shadow on Ying Ying causing her to look like the tiger as she walks over to the bed with her hands grasped together showing she is harmless, whilst walking over to the bed she is accompanied by a panning shot. As Lena enters the room through the door, it is a mystery to the viewer at first, as you cannot see who is at the door but as Lena enters the room there is a sharp close up of her face showing concern for her mother as she is unaware of her mother distress for her marriage to Harold. The wooden pylons in the room symbolise the strength needing to hold up the house, this is like Lena and Harold's marriage it looks good from the outside but on the inside it doesn't appear the same, also the lopsidedness of the house is somewhat identical to Lena's marriage. Throughout the scene there is a lot of medium angle shot of Ying Ying with a lot of shadow positioned on her face and body to perhaps create a sense of mystery or a barrier.

Buy custom Joy Luck Club term paper

Throughout the scene music is being played sympathetically to the tone of the scene, which was anxiety and concern for Lena, as she doesn't want Lena's marriage to turn out as hers did. During the scene almost all of it consists of dark and dull scenes this adds to the final modification of the tone.

The final scene is where June goes to China for a reunion with her twin sisters that her mother Suyuan abandoned during the war in China when her babies were born. June never had a full understanding or acceptance of her mother's choice to leave the twins along the roadside. Lindo organised for June to go to China and meet the twins and inform them about the death of their mother. June goes to China by boat the first frame we observe in this scene is the sharp close up of swan feather followed by a slow panning shot going up toward June's face this shot shows the strong link between June and the swan feather. After panning up there is a sharp close up of June at eye level this frame is positioned there for a while to show June's excitement of meeting her twin sisters. As the boat docks into China there is a long shot of the boat showing the crowd and the different surroundings, as June walks off the boat she is accompanied by a low angle medium panning shot. When June looks for her sisters through the crowd she is lead by a dolly shot whilst the camera is proceeding with a dolly shot June is in a medium shot this shows her surrounding as well as her emotions. As June first sets sight of the twins she stands a reasonable distance away from the twins there is a long shot of the twins then followed by a close up of June's face showing her joyous experience with her first encounter with the twins. When June and the twins come together there is a high angled shot of the twins and June representing no emotions at this time. Whilst June tells the twins of their mother's death there is a sharp close up of her face showing sympathy and sorrow, the twins accept June with a hug this frame is shot through a high angled shot after they hug the camera slowly proceeds with tracking out in a slight upward direction.

The tone of this scene was somewhat different to the others as this one dealt with the justification of why Suyuan couldn't make it to China, June was afraid that her sisters wouldn't accept her she thought perhaps she may be rejected, it also deals with the anxiety June went through to preparing herself to tell the twins bout the death of her mother, it also is a joyous scene in that it is a happy event. Throughout the scene there is sympathetic music being played which gives the viewer an understanding it is a sad but joyous event.

In conclusion all three scenes explored different themes and issues but were all completed effectively. Without Wayne Wang's techniques the film may have been a lot different since the film techniques gave the film its appealing characteristics. The different camera shots, angles, movements and focuses made the film a lot more satisfying for the viewer.

As I was walking down the empty hallway for the last time, all the memory came rushing back. The laughter, the hurried footsteps, the rattling locks and talks of randomthe very essence of high school now becomes an illusion to me. This school was a second home to me. Preserved in itself was the reminiscence of those good and bad times, of tears and laughter, of excitement and anxiety, of friends and teachers. It was an unwritten journal of my adolescence life. The thought of leaving it behind was unbearable.

It was a Saturday morning, the day after school had ended. I woke up at early dawn and took a fifteen-minute walk to school. This would be the last time I get to say good-bye to this familiar place where I grew up. I had went to this school for past five years but it never seemed that long. However, since my parents told me that we were moving in a month, I treasured each day for what it was worth. I spent the past month with a strange sentiment. The old bush with newly blooming flowers grasped my attention for the first time as I was walking down the usual path. The school's front stood out amidst the early fog. I stood there, staring at the school sign, "Oxnard Chapel School." Those three words entitled one big chapter in my life. I walked past the gates and entered the campus. It was strangely empty. I was feeling the exact same thing five years ago when I first stepped into this school. I remember running past the library to get to my first period class as the bell starts ringing away. How fun it was sitting on those benches, eating lunch with friends or cramming for tests. The amphitheater used to be crowded with hundreds of students whenever we had a special event. The smell of fresh paint blended in with the crisp morning mist was refreshing. Looking around, I told myself that there will be a day when I come back and visit this school-the frame of my past and the foundation of my future.
