Machiavelli's Ideal Prince

It seems all the 'great thinkers' of ancient times believed that there had to be a class of oppressors who deserved to have control, and a class of the oppressed who should live in subjection of the elite. Machiavelli is no different and believes "men ought either to be well-treated or crushed" (). In his writing he explains how one determines who in the state is crushed and who will crush them. As he talks about colonizing on page three he believes the natives of one place to be under conquering people because inherent in winning is superiority. Machiavelli even says "he [the ruler] offends a minority only of the citizens from whom he takes lands and houses to give them to the new inhabitants" (). He is openly saying that the way to rule a state is to charge in to surrounding territory, take other people's property to make your own, and this will keep your followers happy.

I feel this is a way to force your way to the top, and once there the cycle of oppression has to continue to for one to stay up there. I see the United States as beginning to be a world bully. I have said before that the U.S. is hiding behind the 'War on Terrorism' to go into the middle east and try to take what the easterners have and conform them into what we want, and if a few U.S. citizens have to go over there and show them how to live then we will do it to expand our 'pure' way of life. I heard in the movie Tommy Boy, "what the American public doesn't know, makes them the American public." I heard this quote as I wrote my paper and it summed up how the government treats the American public, and this is how Machiavelli believes a country should be run, with only the powerful needing to be informed to make decisions and no decision is made with the needs other than that of the ruler.

Write my Essay on The Prince for me

There are three ways to conquer and acquire new states 1) by one's own arms, ) by one's good fortune, and ) by wickedness. In comparison there are three ways to keep a society under control, 1) ruin the society, ) live with them and convert them your way of life, or ) allow them to live their way and keep things friendly between them. I would like to refer to the United States as a place that came across their independence by our own arms or good fortune, and we preserve this nation by all living together, but sadly I believe sometimes we fell that we have to eliminate diversity. Every time I read a 'great' idea I wonder who deemed it great. After all the readings that encourage oppression I get more and more frustrated at how far back the roots of racism go and why it is so hard to overcome the habits we have lived with since, really, the beginnings of society.

Just imagine your child was diagnosed of having autism. The realization of your child perhaps being autistic may be lurid. You now know that your child will be found with many challenges, and may have a severe difficulty making sense of the world. Autism is an illness that can affect your communication, socialization, intelligence, and you may act in many unusual behaviors. To try to help an autistic child is being very courageous. Having a child will who is autistic will be a struggle throughout both of your lives.

Autism can be described in many ways. Autism medically, is a neurological disorder, which can affect the brain from trying to properly function normally. Autism is always a childhood disorder. It is where a child is in his own world. This may be very difficult for the average person to understand. Autistic children will have a problem demonstrating many special skills like socializing, communicating, and using their sensory system. Some call autism an information processing disorder. Autism should be known that it is not a disorder that a child can catch or create. It is a neurological brain disorder that is inborn. The child will differ in many ways of a normal average person. The major issue that devastates parents is that the child will most likely not be able to make sense of the world. I think what a mother once, said is an example of how difficult this disorder can be, for the child and the parent. She said " we start with an image-a tiny, golden child on hands and knees, circle in ground and round a spot on the floor in mysterious self-absorbed delight. She does not look up, though she is smiling and laughing; she does not call our attention to the mysterious object of her pleasure. She does not see us at all. She and the spot are all there is, and thought she is eighteen months old, an age for touching, tasting, pointing, pushing, exploring, she is doing none of these."

Throughout the years and into the future, the causes of autism are unknown. Scientists and people in the medical world all have their own hypothesis and idea about the disorder. But the opinion of so many researchers and physicians around the world are very mixed. Many believe the origin may be genetics. Many should know that the external environment can not cause autism. The major majority should know that every scientist knows that autism is not caused by bad or poor parenting. The hypothesis by many is genetics, over the years with the progression of genetics and DNA it is very possible. Scientists have done prior studies and will continue in the next couple of years. One study was the research of identical twins. It indicated that autism tends to occur in both twins if it occurs in one. Most observations will have no cause for the diagnosis of autism. But many are starting to believe it is caused by a viral infection. Some of these complicated viral infections are congenital rubella, cytomegalic inclusion disease, phenyliketonuria, and many believe in this viral infection to be a cause because it is an inherited enzyme deficiency or the fragile x syndrome, a chromosomal disorder. But most of autism is not known, but is believe to be caused by biological factors. Due to neurological symptoms, genetic causes, infections and difficulties in pregnancy. BBC broadcasting network once brought on the air, the new study that was going to be done by the Department of Health with joint forces with the Medical Research Council (MRC) to conduct more research about the disorder. The department of Health spokesman said "this information will help to identify the areas where future research is needed which will help scientists develop high quality proposals for research funding." The research project did end last April, and again another wall for the medical industry. They did not find any evidence or cause of what autism may be caused or linked with.

There are a number of ways to determine if your child may perhaps have the disorder of autism. There are many hotlines, websites, and books on autism. If you think your child may have autism, they always advise parents to see their physician. There are many lists of the symptoms of autism, some of them are resisting normal teaching methods, inappropriate laughing and giggling, lack of speech or impaired speech, acts as if deaf, no fear of danger, echolalia, insensitivity, spins objects, not cuddly, no eye contact, no motor skills or coordination, standoffish manner, resists change in routine, difficulty in mixing with other children, inappropriate attachment to objects, extreme passivity, crying tantrums, and extreme distress for no discernible reason. The list goes on and on for autistic children. Most of these symptoms can be detected at a young age, and that parents may notice. Some of these symptoms will not be noticed until at an older age, some symptoms teachers might notice. The most important factor is that parents usually do not notice the signs or symptoms of autism at birth. Parents and caregivers will most likely pick these signs up by the time the child turns three years old. Many of the severe symptoms the parents or caregiver might notice is that the child does not want to be held, not interested in certain games, and cannot talk. Some parents come to the immediate conclusion that the child may be deaf.

One major issue parents, friends, and caregivers face is the question, how do I communicate, socialize, and help my child? These questions have many answers and many answers that are still being studied and researched by child psychologists, psychiatrists, and sociologists. One symptom I did mention before was a word called "echolalia", I now know this can be interpreted as a delayed language acquisition, and the child may respond to a question by repeating it immediately (immediate echolalia). Another, is repeating parts of a conversation heard in the past (delayed echolalia). May repeat certain sounds over and over again (verbal perseveration) it also may be difficult for a child to convey his or her own needs. Examples are, if the child is hungry or ever in pain. This is one of the most lurid obstacles for a parent to come to realize. It is also very hard to socialize with an autistic child. Frequently autistic children will want to play alone, have no interest in making any friends, cannot make contact into your eyes, and will not show any sign of affection. This is very hard for family, friends, caregivers, and teachers to have to deal with. Most autistic children also have an IQ of under 70, that of an average person. About 0-40% of autistic children that have an IQ of fewer than 50 may start having seizures before adolescence. There are also many variances of autism, sometimes called childhood-onset pervasive development disorder or atypical autism. This may begin later then 1 years old. They start to behave in many bizarre mechanisms. The child may also be diagnosed with tourette's syndromes, obsessive compulsive disorder, or hyperactivity. It is very difficult for a doctor to diagnose one symptom or disorder from another.

To help your child through autism at the beginning and into his life is very demanding, challenging, and time consuming. You have to be the quintessence of parents. The first step in the progression of you child is understanding, interpreting, and being knowledgeable about your child's disorder. You also must understand your child's needs. A parent needs to be aware that there is help out there for his or her child. Many parents when first hearing of the diagnosis of her child becomes very sad and angry. You need to come to terms and realization of your child's needs. One organization that helps people deal with autism is organizations such as the Forum for Autism Awareness in (FFA) Mumbai and Action for Autism (AFA) in Delhi. They educate you in the progression and needs of you and your child. Depending on your child's difficulties, he or she may need a special educator, speech therapist, occupational therapist, and someone who deals with sensory integration. People in the medical field say that a school can be very beneficial to your child. The classroom can clear expectations, goals, and learning experiences for the child. There are many progressions and organizations that will help your child be able to deal with life. There are not just learning deficits in an autistic child, there also many daily things like bathing, and eating that a child with autism may need help with. The most important thing to realize is there is help and hope for you and your child.

In short, there is also another point of view that disregards a lot of what people think autism is caused by. One thing Americans should know is that autism is one of a number of children's neurological disorders of psychogenic nature, which means that autism can be caused by abusive and traumatic treatment of infants. Another view of the cause of autism is that in Europe many researchers performed post mortem examinations of autistic children who died from other causes. They recognized damage to their brains. The damage to young children can be manifested in psychomotor delay, ataxia, speech problems and seizures. The moral of the point of view of many other people in the medical field and researchers of autism is that there is a mounting amount of scientific evidence suggesting denial by the American society that the causes of damage to millions of these children, is that they were traumatized, and consequence brain damage because of cruel treatment by parents who are otherwise too busy to love and care for their babies. This again is another point of view of why children are diagnosed with autism. Many parents and physicians dismissed the evidence, but it is very scientifically true.

There is now a lot of research being done by genetics, DNA, and vaccines for autism. Around the world, scientists are trying to find the causes of autism, to try to invent a vaccine to cure autism. They are trying to invent a vaccine to cure or prevent autism. Genetics is a different story. Researchers are started to pain a picture by how the chromosomes might be getting altered or mutated for the birth of the infant. Further discoveries could lead to something called a gene test for autism. This would help only parents and families, but would also accelerate the pace of research for autism. There s not much about DNA, Genetics, or Vaccines known to cure or prevent autism or how it is caused in many children. But, researches and scientists, I believe, in the next couple of years will find out.

In conclusion, researchers and scientists are dedicated to finding the reason and causes behind autism. They are always trying to transcend their knowledge in the medical world, to try to help these autistic children. New things are being discovered daily. Learning about the subject remains a continuous process. In the future, there will be many new therapies, medications, and alternative medications and treatments hopefully in the next couple of years to help your child. Parents are really the best teacher for their child. Autism has been diagnosed to many children in the last year. Scientists feel there has to be a reason why this illness occurs, especially in infants. It might take months, years, or a century. But someday we will be able to overcome the autistic disorder.

Its hard to summarize a project that I would do no matter whether it was assigned or not. I work as an volunteer because I know there is not enough money to be had to pay enough people to do what volunteers do. In a selfish way I do it for myself too, I get great joy out of being able to help someone in some way. I have all praise to give to my parents for being the examples they where in my life to make me who I am today.

I choose Big Brother/Big Sister because you can give one-on-one time with a child so you can make an impact on their lives. I get to see my Little Sister from the beginning and see the changes she has made at the end of our time together. I make life long memories and hope I can give her life long memories and qualities.

From being with my first Little Sister I learned that I had more than I deserved growing up. That I took a lot of experiences and material possessions for granted. She taught me to be patient and to really make time for her. With my new match I have a new found joy for life. She takes what life gives her and makes the most of it. She is positive in every situation. She has made me stop and think about being happy about everything I take time do. One thing in the program that you find is that your Little will start to mimetic you. She will talk the way you talkor smile when your smiling. These seem like little things, but when you are working with a child who needs an impact little things add up to huge things. A symbolic interactionism would take place in this in this relationship as you become closer to one another.

Sometimes it easy for me to become ethnocentric when working with the program. I think of my life and my childhood and can not understand why these kids are not getting the big picture or the little picture as it might be sometimes. I really have to take set back to think this child is not me. She is not growing up in the same environment that I did. But at the same time she is still a child reaching out and I am there to pick her up. The culture differences (sometimes large, sometimes small) do not make a difference when friendship and caring is truly involved. As I learn more and more about her I find their really are not that many differences. She has the same values, norms, and sanctions in her life as I did and do. Her mom wants nothing but the best for her, which is why she has me, and that is nothing different than what my family is like. I think that in society today we dwell too much on differences instead of trying to find what is alike.

Custom Essays on Volunteer Organizations

An overwhelming feeling can over take me sometimes knowing that I am being an significant other to her. I know that I am being watched whenever I am with her. I feel like I really do not add up to what she needs or what she expects of me. I guess this would be like self realization that I am not great. I make mistakes and mess up, but in her eyes just now I can do no wrong. This scares me because I know someday I will make a mistake and it will change her outlook of me. Working with young children can be challenging at times to know what to do or say. You can be changing this child's life for the best or the worse. My social interaction with my Little is much different than when I am with my friends or family, but sometimes I think that is wrong. If my Little Sister saw me out would she still want to look up to me, and for me to be her role model.

I guess that it is that way with everything you do in life we take on different roles depending on if we are at home, work. friends, or out volunteer placement. I do understand to a point that my social interaction does have to be different, but I guess the question is, How different?

Being a volunteer brings negative and positive status to ones life. Since I have started Big Brother/Big Sister I have been looked upon as a hero to children, but at the same time I have been looked at as someone wasting their time. I do not like to think of myself as an hero, but a waste of time? The people who say this usually back it with, That child will always be that way because of their social class or it's a waste of time they will just go back to their old ways. I wish for a moment those people could see that the world does not revolve around them and their negative altitudes. The only way that there is going to be a change in the lower class (I know that is stereo typical use of lower class) is for it to start with the children. To make a difference in one life, so that they can make a difference in their children's lives and the trail continues on, is what Big Brother/Big Sister is about. That is why I want to be a part of the work, and to be proud that I am a part of their organization.

To sum it all up, sociology to me is the art of watching people. When watching a Little learn new task or achieve something big it makes you proud that you have been a part of their lives. It not only makes us proud, but most of the time the parent (guardian) is proud their child has found a bond with a Big. Step my step children can learn and change all it takes is a friendly smile and lots of encouragement.

Thanks so much for giving this assignment, it made me look deeper at my reasons and whys for taking part in Big Brother/Big Sister. I know that its not just fun, but its for a change of my Littles life and My life!!!

Do we continue on, as we were, unchanged and unchanging? To answer this question we must first consider what change is. The Heinemann Dictionary defines change as 'to become or make different constant alteration'. So therefore, according to this definition life is constantly changing and evolving…life is about change. It could be argued that universal truths such as growing up, distancing yourself from parents and old people reminiscing as in Felix Skrzynecki is in itself unchanged and unchanging. But in order for these truths to take place individual change happens, hence the idea that we continue on unchanged and unchanging is false.

Peter Skrzynecki's poems Felix Skrzynecki and 10 Mary Street both focus on a young migrant's battle to not only find his own identity but to adapt to a new countries way of life. Both deal with the detachment and change between father and son. The Door by Miroslav Holub looks at change as positive, progressive and preferable to stagnation while Hannah Roberts Sky High portrays change as a measure of time. These four pieces discuss change from an entirely different perspective but all focus on the inevitability of change.

Peter Skrzynecki's Felix Skrzynecki is a poem that discusses a young boy's progressive detachment from his father as he grows. The boy appears to be distancing himself from his father's world as he matures. The father is attempting to continue on with his life unchanged and unchanging which is shown in the first stanza.

However the boys inability to conform to his father's life of reminiscence brings about change. This change is underlined with conflict, but eventually acceptance of the inevitability of change by the father. The father's inability to alter the boys path of 'pegging his tent further and further south of Hadrian's wall' shows that he is resigned to the inevitability of change and that we do continue on, changed and changing.Help with essay on English-HSC-Changing perspective:'We continue on as we were, unchanged and unchanging'Is this true?Discuss the concept of change, as you understand it from your study of at least two of your prescribed poems and two texts from the changing booklet.

Two different perceptions of change are demonstrated in Felix, one with the son and the other with his father. The father shields himself from change and alteration whereas the son embraces the necessity for change. As the father tries to hold onto the past and the routine life he once had his son is slowly drifting away, reaching out to the new. The more time continues the further apart they are becoming.

Each stanza of the poem represents a stage of development in the boy and father's changing lives. It demonstrates the routine lifestyle that the father lives and his longing to hold onto his past. The poem begins "My gentle father" the adjective gentle demonstrating affection between the father and son whilst the use of "my" shows intimacy between the characters. As the poem progresses our understanding of Felix Skrzynecki and his relationship with his son is increased. The child's alienated perceptions of his father are most defined in the fifth stanza. This is greatly due to the fathers need to hold onto his Polish culture demonstrated in the line. "Did your father even attempt to learn English?"

The first stanza demonstrates the simplicity of Felix Skrzynecki and the routine order he has created for his life. It also shows the fathers hesitation to change and his conformity to routine. His need to live in the past and to hold onto his heritage is shown in the words.

"Spent years walking its perimeter

From sunrise to sleep

Alert, brisk and silent

He swept its paths

Ten times around the world"

For the first time, during the last stanza, we can see that the father has finally come to the realisation that his son is slowly conforming to the Australian lifestyle and that change is occurring.

The second piece Peter Sknzynecki's 10 Mary Street demonstrates change as unstoppable and inevitable. Just as Felix Skrzynecki, this piece also focuses on the detachment between parent and child. Yet this piece ends on a more conciliatory note, as though some type of understanding between father and son has occurred.

10 Mary Street represents a house, but more importantly it represents a home. It is viewed as a place of solitude where the family were able to hold on to their Polish background. A place where they 'Kept pre-war Europe alive'. It discusses the slow and gradual detachment between father and son; yet, unlike Felix Skrynecki this piece focuses on the boy's perspective and observations of the house. This poem enables us to have a clearer understanding of the boys past and childhood. In this piece Peter Skrynecki uses the house and gardens as a symbolic example of change.

The metaphor of using the lawns to symbolise change to the house shows the true nature that change is unstoppable and inevitable. As lawn is always growing, change is also occurring. It discusses the father's necessity to 'keep pre-war Europe alive' and the routine lifestyle he feels he must hold onto to do so. The first stanza demonstrates this with the words.

'For nineteen years

We departed

Each morning shut the house

Like a well-oiled lock,

Hid the key

Under a rusty bucket'

From the end of the third stanza, significant changes occur. The bracketed line '(The whole block has been gazetted for industry)' totally sifts the reader's perspective and a sense of realisation that change is inevitable confronts the reader. Not only in Skyrznecki's writing technique but also in his view and perspective's on change.

This stanza begins by discussing certain physical unchangeable features of the house. Then ending with a new perspective. The realisation that the house will be destroyed and that change will be forced upon them.

The text, Sky high, focuses on change as being regressive. The piece is about the author's different perspective of an event, and the way in which time has changed and altered her views. We see two perspective, one of which is her as a young child and the other as a grown women.

Roberts outlines her childhood perspective of her backyard demonstrating a sense of innocence, freedom and naivety. Hannah Roberts's talks about climbing up the "silver skeletal arms' of the clothesline as a child. She sees this as representing a challenge. Although she is writing this piece from an adult's perspective, she does not disregard her stereotypical childhood images, nor does she describe them to be false or untrue.

The title of the piece 'Sky high' represents the core issues and themes of the poem. Thus demonstrating ideals such as uplifting, reflecting, top of the world and the height of happiness. It focuses on accepting change yet also reminiscing over past memories. It demonstrates Robert's change in attitude, physical appearance and maturity and shows that change is unstoppable and unavoidable.

Hannah Roberts discusses the freedom and innocence she felt climbing up the "Silver Skeletal Arms" of the clothesline as a child. It then focuses on her as an adult reaching up to the same clothesline. The changes that have occurred over the years have made her incapable of climbing back up the clothesline. Now she considers herself to be too old, heavy, mature and unsure to repeat the climb. This looks upon change as a measure of time. She has changed and altered physically and emotionally, but it is this change that has allowed her to reminisce over past memories.

Holub's 'The Door' is a poem that deals with the necessity for change and the idea that any change, no matter how insignificant is better than non. It is a personal perspective on change of any sort being favourable to stagnation. The poet relentlessly pushes the reader towards the notion of opening the door by commencing each verse with the statement 'Go and open the door'. The repetition of the imperative "Go and open the door" asserts and stresses the need to confront change and take risks. Even if you don't necessarily take the risk, the thought of change has, in some way changed you. Therefore stressing that we are always changing and that change is always occurring. No matter how minuet.

Holub's poem goes beyond a literal translation, expanding your horizons and perspective. This is done through the use of symbolism, metaphors, assonance denotation and connotation. Symbolism is used widely throughout this piece, allowing the individual to perceive what it is saying in their own way. This is shown in the words

'Maybe outside there's

A tree, or a wood

A garden

Or a magic city'

This symbolising natural change or demonstrating the size of change, large or small.

As the poems continues the language and tone changes from optimistic to desperate. The poem commences with the statement "Go and Open the door" placing a friendly, inviting and relaxed tone on the poem. During the third stanza the repetition of the same statement "Go and open the door" becomes a plea, as though commanding and pushing the individual to take the chance.

The last sentence 'At least there will be a draught' puts forward the idea that although you may not find what you're expecting or it may not be positive, change is unavoidable and always occurring. This piece challenges the individual to take a risk and that fresh air is preferable to stagnant air.

As demonstrated in the text 'Sky High', 'Peter Skyrzynecki', '10 Mary Street' and 'The Door' change is inevitable and unavoidable. All four pieces focus on several different aspects of change, yet all stress that we are constantly changing and change is always occurring. Therefore I feel that the statement that 'We continue on as we were, unchanged and unchanging' is false and untrue.

Cider with Rosie presentation

Cider with Rosie is a memoir of a childhood by Laurie Lee. He shares with us what it was like to grow up without a father, his relationships with his mother, sisters, friends, turning into a man, sexual awakening with Rosie, innocence and naivety and what it was like when he finally lost these characteristic that made him the sweet boy.

In the first chapter Lee gives a three year olds perception and misconceptions small in relation to objects around him, for example when he got lost in the grass, on the families' arrival to their new home, "I had never been so close to grass before. It towered above me and all around me, each blade tattooed with tiger-skins of sunlight". The sense of adventure is communicated through Lee's use of metaphors and similes.

One of Lee's major influences was that of his mother, a whole chapter is devoted to her. He trusted and admired her, when the stranger appeared in the kitchen Lee writes "but he was no tramp or he wouldn't be in the kitchen" and "he was a soldier, because mother said so". This tells us how much influence his mother had over him.

He had a warm and loving relationship with his mother; the security he felt from his mother was shown by her sharing a bed with him, as a young child making him feel special from the others and so secure. His mother was silent while his sisters told him he had to move into his brother's bed "for a bit" when he got older, he was promised that he would return later to her bed. He never did return to her bed, and he described this as the "first betrayal". In return he says "I grew a little tougher, a little colder, and turned my attention more to the outside world, which was now emerging visibly through the mist". When Lee says he grew a little tougher, to me, it sounds as if he thought that this betrayal of not been allowed to sleep in his mother's bed was the end of the world. I also get the impression by his statement that he is growing up and that he has realised that there are other things in life for him to explore.

As the innocence and naivety wore off, Lee began to take an interest in the opposite sex, namely Jo, who was a classmate. She used to strip off her clothes and allow Lee to examine her body, I think this was just innocent curiosity on his behalf because in Lee's school days, sex education was not heard of and he had to understand how girls were different to boys. I think his first sexual encounter was with Rosie who enticed him with Cider, his first taste and a new experience. He drank and became drunk. Afterwards he says "I felt like a giant; I swung from the trees and plunged my arms into nettles to show her". This is the moment in Lee's life that he changes from a boy into a man. This encounter with Rosie was obviously a key theme in his childhood as why would he put this memory as the title. Was it because at this time in his life he finally became a man, signifying the end of his childhood? This is arguable.

When first reading Zimbardo's prison experiment, I was disturbed with the ethics. However, once I got past my disturbance, I was able to actually consider the implications. And, I became fascinated with the impact that resulted from randomly placing otherwise equal individuals into roles that forced them to interact with each other on a new uneven playing field. The volunteers were thus no longer able to relate to or understand each other in the same way. Both the prisoners and the guards were forced to accept the strengths and/or weaknesses that came with the roles they were given. This is true of many roles we could look closer at. One example is the gender roles that are forced on to all of us. In my analysis of the prisoner experiment I saw an amazing parallel between our behavior as men and women in America and the behavior of the guards and prisoners in the Zimbardo experiment. More specifically, I could see this connection most distinctly in men and women still in their twenties. This age group is old enough to have established beliefs and corresponding behavior, but still young enough to be constantly growing and adapting to their environment. This state of instability allows the gender roles of this group to have a significant impact on the behavior of its members. So, please keep in mind that this is the age group I will be referring to in most of the comments made in the following discussion.

As a 4 year old woman living in America, I often find myself feeling like a prisoner forced to submit to the wills of the stronger male gender. Who, often impose their strength unnecessarily much like the guards in Zimbardo's prison. I constantly see women displaying behavior similar to prisoners; They're always trying to appease men and gain their approval. They allow men to abuse them mentally and physically. They stay in relationships that don't make them happy because they fear being alone. They work hard doing the same job as their counterparts for half the money. They continue to take care of the household and the children while still trying to maintain a career. Men on the other hand act like power hungry guards seeking to keep women down and keep themselves up. They are rude and condescending to women in their words and actions. They treat women like objects that they can just pick up or toss aside at their will. They demand their partners to be faithful and virtuous but refuse to return the same respect. They show their power through ridiculous displays of aggression and hold male bonding sessions that they don't think women are good enough to participate in.

Now, I do realize that these are generic statements about men and women. They certainly don't represent the way we all act or feel. Not even all twenty year olds display these types of extreme behaviors. But, the majority of us do display at least some degree of these gender specific behaviors more often then we are willing to admit during this phase in our lives. In fact, you probably have no problem admitting that you see the opposite sex acting in these ways all of the time. I don't deny that we are all individuals and it isn't fair to include everyone in the same group, but that is also true of the Zimbardo volunteers. These young men were all individuals, but when divided into two distinct groups the prisoners exhibited certain general behaviors as did the guards. But, you might argue that gender roles are different because there is no preconceived idea of how we are supposed to act as men and women. You might think we behave according to our biological structure. Then if women act weak and helpless they must be just that. And, if men act macho and aggressive it is simply because they have more testosterone. I disagree. I think we act out our gender roles according to what history and society show us is expected. We have an idea of how we should act based on our gender just like the volunteers based their behaviors on how they thought guards and prisoners should behave. Most of the volunteers based their ideas about their roles on books they had read and shows they had seen. For men and women it is much more complicated then that. We base our ideas about gender on hundreds of different factors and influences. The two that I think have the most impact and are therefore the most important to mention are the physical requirements of our past and the social pressures of the present.

Let's begin with the past. Clearly the history of human development has influenced our tendency to fall into stereo typical gender roles. Before the technology and security of our modern day society, it was necessary for men and women to take on different roles as part of the family. It made sense for men to rely on their strength to hunt and kill and protect their families. Men were physically more equipped for these tasks so this is what they spent their time doing and these were the types of skills they developed. Likewise, women's physical abilities to reproduce and to breast feed made it logical for them to stay close to home and tend to the children. Being close to home allowed women the time and gave them the necessity to develop more domestic skill like cooking and cleaning and sewing. But, our culture has advanced greatly since that time and we no longer have the same demands and restraints. Food is now readily available at any local supermarket so it is not necessary for men to rely on their physical strength to provide for their families. Money is what is needed now and both men and women have the physical and biological abilities to earn money and provide for a family. Security is no longer a job for men either. We have strong walls and security systems and the consequences of breaking laws to protect our families now. On the same token it is no longer necessary for women to be near the house taking care of the children. Once the mother of a child has physically recovered from the birthing process it is not necessary for her to be close to home. There are now several other safe places for the child to receive care such as daycare centers and schools. Women don't even have to be physically present to breast feed their babies given modern technology. It is also possible now for men to develop the skills necessary for child care and house work. So why do the majority of us still fall back into those old roles? Why are twenty year old men so focused on establishing careers while women this age are focused on finding husbands and starting a family? Is it just habit that leads us back to these behaviors? In part yes. This is a natural response to change. To cling to what is comfortable. It is also natural for men to want to hold on to the power and control that their physical strength used to provide them with. Of course men want to continue to be the providers and have women depend on them. It gives them power. If I had this power I would be hesitant to just hand it over. I would do everything I could to keep the opposite sex from taking away that control. It is because of this that we remain in the past. Although we have made the physical and technological advancements to overcome the gender boundaries nature once placed on us, we haven't made the psychological advancements.

This brings me to the topic of the second factor I want to mention regarding gender roles. That factor is our present social atmosphere. Because of our mental resistance to change and men's desire to maintain power, we have created social pressures that keep us confined by our gender roles. Men, for instance have made it very difficult for women to excel in the corporate world. Women have a harder time getting promotions and raises despite their equal levels of performance. Men further prevent women from doing well in their careers by refusing to stay home with the children and then blaming problems with our youth on the lack of a stay at home parent. This pressures women to give up work to stay at home. That makes it much easier for men to secure that newly opened management position. Women have aided this attempt due to their similar comforts with the past. Many women enjoy being provided for and taken care of. Many even like being told what to do because it takes away the responsibility of having to make decisions. Women even go as far as marrying men for money just so they don't have to work. But this is not true of all men and women. Many men would be eager to stay at home with the children and many women would do anything to be successful executives. So why don't they do it? Society is constantly telling them that this is not their role.

We are constantly bombarded with images of how men and women should act. Movies continually feed us the traditional Cinderella story where the man sweeps the woman off of her feet and saves her from her pathetic lonely existence. We as women don't find it insulting. We think it is romantic and seek to find similar happiness in our own lives. Commercials, of course, are always there to remind us that men are more suited to use tools and women should be shopping for brooms. They repeatedly show men watching sports and drinking beers with their buddies while women are at the salon getting their hair done in an attempt to gain the attention of a man. Magazines remind us that there is a plethora of gorgeous women in lingerie waiting around every corner so women better stay at home primping while the men take care of the business. Likewise, men are shown ads of all the things they need to buy to keep their women happy. What choice do they have but to be rich and successful?

So what? What is the point to all of this? We all know these gender differences exist. Just like Zimbardo already knew how guards and prisoners typically act in jails. But, his experiment still had a point. It made the volunteers reflect on their own actions as prisoners and/or guards and consider what lead to these actions. The prisoners thought about how it felt to be weak and to wonder what they could have done differently. They could have united and stood up to the guards and their weapons. They could have refused to play the role of the prisoner. They could have refused to participate in the experiment all together. Similarly, the guards could have showed more compassion. They could have treated the prisoners just like regular guys. They didn't have to tell them what to do or push them around. Reflecting on this experience allowed the volunteers to approach their lives differently. Examining their actions within different roles will hopefully cause them to examine their roles in their daily lives and the way they act in these different roles.

That is my challenge to you. I challenge all of you to really think about the role you play in society. Whether you are male or female, remember that your gender does not define who you are. It is simply one of the many roles you have taken on in your lives. It is something that has been assigned to you, but it does not determine how you must act or interact with others. We are all individuals. We now live in a free society that gives us the freedom to make our own choice. So think about the ones you make every day. Define what the roles you play stand for. Don't let them define you. Don't let our past or our current social pressures put you in a role you don't want to be in. Women are not prisoners and men are not guards so let's stop behaving as though we are.
