Support in age and sickness, religion rights, and the right to bring suit and give evidence in special cases were limited. However, some had the rights to marriage, free time, private property, contractual ability and for women, lighter domestic or plantation work. Brutal treatment such as branding, chaining, and sometimes murder was prohibited but cruelty was very common before the 1th century.





In the early 1800’s the population of the United States included 8,60 slaves and only 6,505 of those slave belonged to people in the north. By 1860 there were a total of ,5,760 slaves just in the southern states. Most early presidents and major people thought as slavery as being something evil and inconsistent with the declaration of independents. The Presbyterian Church and the Methodist Episcopal were very anti-slavery until one day when a bishop from the Methodist Episcopal church refused to emancipate slaves he had inherited threw his wife. From this the south was formed.


Any northerners made anti slavery groups and as a whole anti slavery views grew strong. Many people were afraid to show their anti slavery views in fear of what might happen. Even though northerners did not want slavery to spread to other states their reasons were based on economics rather then mortality. Every conflict between the north and the south somehow tied into slavery issues. Prior to the 1860 election, Abraham Lincoln and Stephan Douglas both worked towards a compromise on the slavery issues. However, Douglas won most immigrant support because they feared the abolishment of slavery would take away their jobs.


During the civil war a man named Fredrick Douglass, who was a slave but escaped, spoke of giving blacks guns and training them for combat. Not only would this prove that blacks should have their freedom but also show white men that black people deserve the right to full citizenship. That is what Lincoln did, he put up posters stating why a black man would want to join the war.


At first blacks were assigned to their own groups, separated from the whites and were given silly tasks. Once the blacks were allowed to fight, their performance quickly hushed the racist soldiers. By the end of the war 17,000 black men had served in 166 all-black regiments and many performed heroically. Twenty-one blacks earned the Medal of Honor for their outstanding performance above and beyond their call of duty.

Vanessa Mattison, the author of our text, Sonia Nieto, states, “Vanessa took the approach that cultural and racial differences are not significant, that ‘it couldn’t matter less to me.’ In this, she is simply reflecting the value of being color-blind, which we all have been led to believe is both right and fair. In this framework, differences are seen as a deficit rather than an asset.” (Affirming Diversity-Nieto, page 8). This has raised my awareness on two levels, both in the classroom and as a mother, bringing up my own children who are now fourteen and sixteen.


Does the idea of being color-blind automatically negate the cultural differences? Does it mean we only see those differences as a deficit? In this, I must take issue with the author. I do not believe that saying, “I don’t care what color his skin is” means that we toss aside his ethnic diversity. It only means that we see past his skin color to an individual person first, then take joy in all the things that make up that person, ethnicity being an important part. Considering our “sorting game”, one might even say it was a good idea to look past his skin color first to the individual because the majority of the time, we can’t tell who is what by looking at them anyway. I do believe it is important to celebrate a person’s heritage, but not at the expense of that person’s individuality.

We tend to think in terms of a person of different ethnic origin walking into a classroom with a majority of Caucasian children, but it is interesting to imagine the reverse. What if Vanessa walked into an inner city school where 80 % of the children were Black and Latino. Would she feel comfortable? Would she encounter reverse discrimination? These questions made me take a look at the population of Blacks, Latinos, and Whites at my elementary school, which is pretty evenly divided into thirds. Nowhere is the study of the children’s social customs more evident and easy to read than in the cafeteria during lunch, and here I made a startling discovery. I cannot say how it is at any other school but at Atlantic West, interestingly enough, the children separate into groups. These groups are NOT ethnically divided but personally divided according to individual attitudes. The defiant troublemakers, the shy quiet timid kids, the smart good grade ethic ones, the girly fashion conscious girls, the sports jocks, and others not so clearly defined. As my school mainstreams our autistic students for specials, and I sit with them during lunch, I have had the opportunity to observe this grouping first hand many times. During music today, I watched three boys who were obviously the best of friends, defiantly talk back to the teacher and throw papers at people. One was White, one was Black, one was Hispanic. It could have been a bad television show. They were comrades-in-arms and it was also obvious that they didn’t really care about each others cultural diversity. They were friends because they all had bad attitudes towards authority.





My children are another example of why I disagree with Sonia Nieto’s negative description of what she calls “color-blindness”. My daughter Shaina’s favorite teacher was her fourth grade teacher, whom she still keeps in touch with. She spent a month raving about her wonderful new teacher and all the “cool” things she was learning and how nice Mrs. Singleton was. I was excited to meet her at Open House and made the discovery that night that Priscilla Singleton was Black. Shaina had never mentioned it to me. She did not negate this fact, on the contrary; throughout the year Mrs. Singleton brought to her teaching little bits of who she was culturally. When they studied Kwanzaa, we were so intrigued by the beauty of the philosophy of it that we added it to our own celebrations of the season. Shaina never saw Priscilla Singleton’s heritage as a deficit; she simply saw past her skin color to a person who was and is a loving and gifted teacher who is an African American woman. Shaina also has Latino friends who she loves because they have attitudes in common. But she does not negate their heritage; she celebrates it. It is not, however, why they originally became friends, it is just part of the whole person that she loves. My son Scott is on the cross-country and track team at Pompano Beach High School. He is friends with a young Black man not because he is or isn’t Black, but because they have something in common. Despite the fact that they are the two slowest people on the team, they love running and enjoy the exercise and the feeling of being part of a team.


I believe that depending on where the school is, and the age levels, prevailing attitudes among different social groups can be very different, as well as the structure of the groups themselves. On the elementary level, I would encourage “Culture Days” that would celebrate each ethnic group in my classroom. I would ask that particular children bring in information about their heritage; perhaps a parent could contribute an ethnic dish that we all could taste, and every child in the class could find out one piece of interesting information to add to the day and the discussion. I would make sure that the walls of my classroom celebrated and informed about the diversity of our country. I would bring in music of different cultures and teach my class songs. I would encourage learning about, and class celebrations of, different holidays. I would try to learn every day from my students and hope that they would learn every day from me. Most of all, I would try to show them, through word and action, that I considered each of them a rare and precious individual whose culture was a beautiful part of what they are.

Throughout history the economy of Portland island has been able to comfortably rely on the capital provided by the quarrying industry, however as the population of the island began to grow as did the technology used for the stone extraction, leaving many islanders jobless due to the use of machinery. The island has long had a strong military presence due to its geographically strategic defensive position, however when the Ministry of Defence began using the harbour as a Naval research centre, it seemed that the economy was “saved” and that no-one need worry. The Avalanche was sunk when 106 people lost their lives. The remaining twelve people were rescued by local fishing and rowing boats. The construction of the church was prompted by the owners of the vessel with donations from the crown and New Zealand. The cove and its attractions are overlooked by the ruins of the Rufus Castle, which was built by Rufus the son of William the Conqueror, but fell to William the Conqueror’s grandaughter after a feud in 114 with King Stephen.


The Portland museum and shipwreck exhibition houses the islands smuggling artefacts, with the adjoining building containing the Portland Gallery exposed the Islands natural and social heritage and history.


Portland Castle is just one of Henry the VIII’s defensive fortresses, the purpose of this one was to protect the harbour against invasion. Built in 15, it changed hands twice and was one of the last defences to surrender to Cromwell’s men, it remained functioning for four hundered and fifteen years until 154 as it was recommissioned in an effort to prevent piracy and smuggling.


The Portland Harbour is the first area noticeable when entering Portland, it is one of the worlds largest man-made harbours, the massive breakwaters were constructed in the mid 1th century and used over 6 million tonnes of Portland stone, the harbour is bound by the island the mainland of Weymouth and is backed by the Chesil beach tombolo.

Ten seconds is a short period of time that changed my life. July 1, 00 two days after my birthday. As I was sitting in my at my house watching television my little brother rushed in the house. He told me that some boys were throwing rock at him while he riding his four-wheeler. So I jumped on the A.T.V. and rushed down the road where the boys were. I thought I was playing the big brother role by going to take care of everything. As I turned the curve ready to confront the boys I lost control. The machine tossed and tumbled with me still attached. You could feel the impact of the four-wheeler as it struck the ground on top of me. It all felt like a dream. Little did I know this would be a dream not so easy to wake up from. I got up very delirious I wasn’t sure which was up or down. I heard the of one young lady echo look at his ear. There was no time to wait for the ambulance. Luckily a friend of the family was riding by and saw me and took me to Richmond Memorial Hospital. I look in the man’s mirror at my mangled ear as blood dripped to my shirt. The loss of blood made me blank out a couple of times on the way to the hospital. I was rushed in quickly and placed in emergency room. While I was in the bed the only person I wanted to see was my mother to tell me everything would be all right. When they wheeled me through the lobby, and I saw my family members it felt like my head filled up with water. I started to cry for no reason. I was transported to Moore County Hospital. There I had to have plastic surgery. Throughout the operation the doctor had to pick and dig rocks and gravel out of my ear. The operation took around three hour to surgically repair my ear before I left that night they had to clean my back where it had scraped the road. I remember the nurse saying that the people at the other hospital did not do a good job at cleaning my wounds. I went home that night. The next morning I got up and went to the site of my accident. You could still se the spot where the blood dripped from my ear to the ground. While I was trying to recover there were always limit to what I could do. When I would try to stand sometimes I fall right back down. Me being the person that I am I would never lie down for anything, and I wasn’t about to start now. After all the trials and tribulations I was still able to play my final year on the Richmond Senior High’s football team. The support received from my family, friends, and coaches continues this to be a significant experience in my life. I was very lucky to be able to live my life normal. I also realize that life is short and can be taken from you in matter of seconds. The only thing to do is to live life to the fullest. My accident has shown me that I’ve been through a lot of things, and for me to live life while it is here.

As the 00 football season began, we knew that we had one of the better teams in our conference. Our team just entered the Jack Pine Conference and was ready to go to war with any team. We knew that we had a shot at earning the Jack Pine championship, but also knew it would take endless amount of practice to get there. With everyday becoming a closer one to our first real game, our team set goals that we needed to accomplish. We wanted to win conference and we wanted to make the playoff; something that is very tough to do, as we knew every team was gunning to beat the new comers. Finally the day had come; the day where it wasn’t our teammates lined up on the other side of the ball, it was new faces, new colors and new names. I knew as the Quarterback and as the captain, I had to lead my troops into victory.


Being Quarterback is a very stressful and difficult job, as everyone may not think. I had to have the greatest head, had to be smart and had to be able to take whatever was thrown at me. When the team loses, the team gets the loss, but the QB also gets it. I know that there is no “I” in team, but no one else is pulled out of the bunch and receives a loss, except the QB. I was willing to take the responsibility and make sure we were an unstoppable force. As game time neared, the butterflies entered and I knew that the time was almost there. It was my senior year and my last year to ever play football and wanted to start off with a big bang. As we received, we wanted to make a statement and score right away. The play came in and it was my favorite one. All I can remember is my coach yelling the play, “Oklahoma right, 5--1-,” and I knew that it was a touchdown. My favorite receiver was a guy named Tyler Foor, also my roommate, and he had the 5 pattern, a post-where the receiver runs out 10 yards and then breaks towards to goal post. I seen him break open and I reared back and let her fly with all I had. The first play-a 60 yard touchdown pass. I knew that this was just the start of an unbelievable ending.


We went on to win that game, but then we hit some kind of brick wall. We did every single possible mistake, in the next two games, a team could do. We would go out and fumble, slack on defense and just not play to our potential. It was like our dreams we had as a team, was slowly coming to an end. To make playoffs, the team had to win at least six games and we had already lost two; one non-conference and one conference. The season looked like it couldn’t get any better, but then luck turned onto our side. We fixed out mistakes and capitalized on our opponents. We dominated in every aspect on the game. We went on to win the next two and stood all alone in second place; one game out of first as the biggest game coming up was for first place. This game was not only our homecoming game, but the game that I will never forget.


Throughout the day, I carried a football everywhere I went, to every class, through the hallways, it didn’t matter. The only problem with the day was that rain was in the forecast for the night. The team never practiced much with the ball wet, so we knew that we wanted it to be dry and warm. As school progressed until the end, I worried about nothing the whole day except football and the big game. No one wants to go to the homecoming dance with a loss. The school day ended with a pep assembly and then a parade through downtown Gladwin. My team rode on a big farm wagon, while I rode in a nice 00 convertible Mustang, as I received honors to be the Homecoming King. This all seemed like I have been there before in a dream at night. It was as if I was the king of the jungle that all creatures looked up to. I was about to play the biggest game of my life, I was named king, and most of all, I was liked by everyone.

The parade went on for about an hour with the rain still coming down. Finally, the team got back to the school and had a free hour to relax and do whatever we wanted. Earlier that day, our coach went and got the Bay City Times and read a quote that the other team’s coach said. The quote went like this, “The only way my team will loss, is if Heavenly Intervention occurs. They will not score one single touchdown on us!” The team seemed pretty determined and had their mind set on winning. They had every right to, as they stood alone in first place. As the team got dressed, I sat in the bathroom with my guts and intestines all turning opposite ways. It was gut-check time and I had to go to work.


I went back to my locker, put one piece of equipment on at a time and then taped up. Last to put on was the shoulder pads. I slapped both sides and whispered, “Keep me in good shape.” Over the head they went and finally the # jersey with BRATCHER on the back was pulled over. Then, my lucky headband was put on. This was made out of a girls tight, to keep the sweat out of my eyes so I could see. A lot of different people that did this at the beginning of the year, but now mainly Tyler and myself. I guess you could refer to it as what we called tradition. So then I was ready to get dressed, strap up and get the team ready to roll. As part of my team headed out towards the field, only the backs, something right then, changed. The rain stopped and the sun came out. Everything started to slowly dry, as we had hours until game time. Why all of a sudden this happened? No one knows, but in my books, it was only the start to heavenly intervention.


As we arrived at the football field, over ,000 prospects stood, clapped and cheered as loud as a two ton freight train driving by. It was the second greatest feeling that I have ever felt. Soon I knew that the claps would no longer matter as World War III was going to break out. My team took the field and started throwing different routes and different plays until the line came out and we all gathered around the goal post. Here was the start where the team got pumped up. I would always be the one to jump up on the pile, say a few words and then in tradition of the Gladwin High School football team, say, “Break down,” and then all my teammates would follow with a response of “Hit,” and that cadence would occur three different times. The team would line up like a tunnel, being as wide as the goal post, going out towards midfield. The announcers would then call off the names that were starting, and then the guys would hit them as they ran out.


I would always be the last one called out, seeing how it was my team and I was in command. After I started to run out, the rest of the team that wasn’t on the starting squad would follow behind me and we would all gather at the 50 yard line. We would all huddle in a circle and then start jumping around. Finally, after about a minute, we would stop and I would say, “Who do we hate?” and the team would reply, “The Mustangs!” Like the other saying, we would do this three times and then run to the side lines and get ready for kickoff.


Walking out to the field, the captains, one being a spokesperson, and the refs from each side would meet at midfield. Usually it was me, but sometimes we switched it up. Since it was our combat zone and our place, we got to call it. We won the toss and chose to play defense, to see what they really had. Coming into the game, we knew we had to stop their running back, who led the conference in rushing yards. As the game got under way, I was patiently waiting for the finally sound to see the ending score and what the outcome was going to be.
