The official name of the show I attended at the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art was entitled Albert Marquet from the Pompidou, as all of the pieces displayed (45 paintings and 0 drawings) were on loan from the Pompidou Center in Paris. The time span of the works ranged from the early 100’s to the late 140’s. Marquet’s work is described as somewhat impressionistic, and out of the 65 items on display, I focused on six two works I especially enjoyed, two I didn’t particularly connect with, and a remaining two that I felt relatively neutral about.

Entitled Portrait d’un journaliste americain, (14), this sketch was done in China ink on plain paper and was approximately 10 inches by 8 inches. Marquet used straight, vertical lines, which were simple and direct. The journalist was a square-faced man in his late 40’s to early 50’s. Dressed in a plain button-down shirt and an equally simple tie, with a singlebutton vest underneath an ordinary blazer, nothing really stood out. He was faced profile and had one ear visible. His hair was about an inch high and combed back. What I found most interesting, and this was what really caught my attention, was the subject’s eyes -- they were closed. One would think that a journalist had to keep his open eyes and always be watching the surrounding world. It was as if the artist was attempting to show that this journalist, who happened to be American, was oblivious as to what was going on. Ironically, I have always thought that people of other

countries felt this way about Americans and our culture. To be perfectly honest, I often feel this way about my own culture. Truly fascinating!

Femmes de Laghouat, (11), done in oil on canvas, was about 15 inches by 18 inches. The lines were smoother more rounded than those of the previous piece. In the background were two walls shaded a deep mint green, both rectangular, almost in the shape of parallelograms, and at an angle to each other, both with white creamy and sky blue borders. In the center of the picture sat two dark-complected women, both with dark, mysterious eyes and hair. Both were wrapped in warm-colored, triangular blue cloaks that partially covered their full-length salmon-colored dresses. When facing the picture, the woman on the right was looking towards the woman to her left. She appeared to be in her late 0’s and seemed joyful. Her counterpart gazed off into the distance and looked to be in her late 0’s or early 40’s. Depressed came to mind as an accurate way to describe the elder of the two women. Both sat ‘Indian style,’ side-by-side, on clay colored, earth toned carpet. It was the same color of a red-clay tennis court and contained reddish-brown wavy lines and misshapen circles. The lines of this picture, as I would soon find consistent of the vast majority of Marquet’s work, were wavy and blurred. The only vertical lines were of the walls, which helped to enclose the two women. I honestly did not find much about this piece that I liked. I do not think it had much to do with the line shapes, I just didn’t appreciate the mixture of colors used. Although well suited for the artwork, as they gave the piece a necessary ‘ethnic’ feel, the choice of colors made me somewhat uncomfortable, which seemed to be the intention.

Painted on oil canvas, as with the majority of this collection, was La Seine et l’abside de Notre-Dame (10), also known as The Seine and Apse of Notre-Dame de Paris. This painting, also oil on canvas, with dimensions of two feet by three feet, was painted with many different kinds of lines. The scenery consisted of a large, curvaceous river in the center, painted in slight variations of algae green. The surrounding buildings, on opposite sides of the river were designed in earthy browns and grays. In contrast to the shape of the river, the buildings were rectangular and square, straight and had fairly strong horizontal and vertical lines. In the foreground stood many people, all painted black, with the exception of one person who wore a red cap. A typical sky blue with soft cotton-like clouds, the skyline disappeared into the background. It projected the tranquility of a serene Fall day. La Seine did not invoke any stroke senses and therefore was a neutral piece.

Yet another oil on canvas, standing about two and a half feet by three feet, Les Deux Amies, (11), was one of three pieces displayed in the centermost part of the exhibit. The subjects were two women, both somewhat pale, and drawn in smooth, soft lines that complimented the delicacy of their complexions. Neither wore anything but black, semi-sheer nylons which rested slightly above the knee, and one half inch heeled black shoes. Save these things, the two women were nude. One of the women was sitting on a faded, orange-brown linoleum floor with simple rectangular designs throughout. She, with her legs raised and bent at the knee, rested them at a 45 degree angle, which created a triangular shape, and placed her right hand on the bed and her left on the inner curve of her thighs midway between her knee and stomach. She faced

profile, her body powerfully slanted, with bare breasts tinted a light shade of green. The other woman laid on the bed with both hands folded behind her head, one leg bent at the knee, the other touching the floor, exposing herself freely and without reservation even more powerfully and with more confidence than her companion. Both looked at ease, accompanied by a medium sized brown chair off to the right, a pastel colored couch/bed, and lightly tinted drapes of pink, blue, and green. The lines in this picture flowed completely freely, throughout the canvas, which was another oil on canvas. I loved this picture. It was so honest and so real, not inhibited whatsoever, and completely exposed. It was perhaps the most honest piece in the entire collection and it was due to both the form and content.

Interesting yet much less provocative was Andre Rouveyre, (104), which measured three feet by two and a half feet. The focal point of this portrait was very apparent; a man in his mid 0’s with whom I exchanged introspective gazes. Standing angled against a green wall, with one leg at a 45-degree angle and the other facing forward, he was the product of some rounded, yet more straight lines. He stood stiffly upright, outfitted in black pants, and a vest, shoes, top hat and jacket of the same color, which contrasted a white shirt that peered out of his collar and sleeves. His hands were hidden in his pockets and though he looked straight ahead, his dull eyes might as well have been hidden for they could barely be seen. The floor on which he stood was a yellow brown, a reoccurring color in this collection, with brown stripes that bordered the bottom of the wall and a light that decreased in intensity and brightness as progressed upwards. The lines in this picture, though somewhat curvy, were still straighter than

Goldwater 5

anything else, and were therefore uninviting. Additionally, the fact that the subject was dressed in all black gave off a cold, somewhat dark impression and I was not fond of it.

My final choice, Les Quai des Grands Augustins, (105), at three by two feet, was created with oil on a piece of cardboard. It displayed gentle, blurry lines, I couldn’t help but think, regardless of my limited knowledge of art, that stylistically it looked similar to Monet’s Water Lilies. In this selection, a long, white road cut diagonally through the picture and disappeared into the sky, which led my eyes to and then fixated them upon the sky, the focal point. The sky was created with muted greens and yellows, which the water replicated, and both were identical in coloration. Off in the distance was a forest, towards the middle right side, composed of tall, dull green trees. The lines were always diagonal and soft, never harsh or straight. This, in conjunction with the tones used, helped to create a neutrality.

As far as Albert Marqeut’s exhibit went, I very much enjoyed it. Honestly however, I did notice that all of his textures and techniques seem to be quite similar. Reoccuringly were the uses of muted, earth tones and soft lines, which I did enjoy. However, it would have been interesting to have been able to see something with a bit more variety. His artwork also seems to have a theme to it nudity and work involving the outdoors. There were many pictures of naked women and they were all so delicate, as were the other works, yet not to the same extent.

I have realized that I like color, lots of it. The art I enjoy does not have to depict any particularly spectacular subject, however the more diverse the colors, them ore

captivated I am. I also like distortion. In general, all of the works saw seemed to have been distorted in some way. Although art can imitate life, I believe that truly interesting art takes something very specific and blurs the edges. Why create something to look exactly as it does realistically? I prefer to see something that varies a bit from what it would look like in reality. More than anything else, I learned that I really can appreciate nude work. I am aware that this might fall under the category of content, but I am truly surprised with my recent discovery of a great appreciation for this type of work. And perhaps it isn’t so much that I can appreciate nude work, whereas I could not in the past, but that I can enjoy looking at something that hasn’t been prepackaged. Nude work just happens to be completely honest, and I like that. In fact, I’m convinced that I am a new- found lover of art that tests my limits.

the film ‘Proof,’ by Jocelyn Moorhouse, Martin’s obsessive search for proof is certainly justifiable but ultimately counter productive and misled. I completely agree with this statement. While his disability provides a sufficient reason for his obsession, it is the depth, stubbornness and single-minded desire for the truth, which is misguided. As a child, Martin had no trust for his mother, leading to his insecurities as an adult. Through his camera Martin’s attempts to discover the truth begin to control his life, affecting the way he thinks, behaves and lives. His quest works against him, ruining his relationships and stopping him from moving on until he finally learns to understand others, ironically through Andy’s lie.

Through the many carefully sequenced flashbacks in the film, we learn about Martin’s childhood and the origins of his insecurities. His relationship with his mother was distant and floored with mistrust. Moorhouse uses extreme close-ups of her lips and in the connecting scene, Celia’s lips to link Martin’s childhood with his adult life and convey the message of mistrust for the two women in his life. When his mother tried to describe for him the view from their flat window, Martin was very cynical, insisting that she was lying and refusing to believe what she said. When she questioned him as to why she would lie to him, he replied simply, ‘Because you can,’ (Scene 10). This early-developed theory that people will lie to him because they can, stays with Martin for his whole life, fuelling his obsession with the truth as an adult.

attack the death penalty. They will give emotional speeches about the one innocent man or woman who might accidentally get an execution sentence. However, all of these people are forgetting one crucial element. They are forgetting the thousands of victims who die every year by the hands of heartless murderers. There are more murderers out there than people whom are wrongly convicted, and that is what we must remember. We must remember how unethical it is to have a loved one murdered by a person who may get life in prison…prison meaning three meals a day, cable TV, and a warm bed to sleep in.

I, as well as many others, have total confidence in the death penalty. It is a very beneficial component of our justice system. The death penalty saves lives. It saves lives because it stops those who murder from ever murdering again. It also deters potential murderers from ever committing the crime. Unfortunately, the death penalty is currently used so rarely that it isn’t nearly as effective as it could be. In order for it to work, we must put it into practice more often.

If the death penalty has been declared legal, then the federal and state governments must employ it to its fullest as a means of stopping previous murderers from recommitting their crimes. Since most of the prisoners on death row are there for murder, executing them would ensure that they would never kill again. Obsessive murderers, who know no alternative to killing, need to be executed to protect both prison guards and society.

Socrates would be a philosopher that would be pro-death penalty. A quote by Socrates is “People do the right thing if they can; and if they do bad, do harm, or do evil, it is out of ignorance of what is good.” He is a moral philosopher who believed that the key to a good life lay in the proper knowledge of what was good. Even though ironically enough, Socrates was sentenced to death himself. He was a philosopher who knew good from bad and would feel no pity for a hard criminal who was getting executed.

Aristotle, on the other hand, would argue with the death penalty saying that everything has a good as well as that everything has a function. This is stating that even though a person could be a mass serial killer, he or she would still have some good on the inside of them. Aristotle also believed that the best good is happiness, again going against the death penalty in a way. Murdering could be someone’s extreme happiness, being their highest good, even though murdering is highly illegal in our society today.

Not only would Socrates agree with the death penalty, but Hobbes would as well. Hobbes was important in philosophy for insisting that the only means for ensuring the people follow his “moral rules” is a strong government. A strong government in this situation is one that doesn’t sit back and watch all of our communities turn into chaos, and one that supports and promotes the death sentence. Hobbes believed that society adopts these moral rules because rational people recognize that without such rules, society gives way to a war against all, in which everyone is bound to suffer. The death penalty would be the solution to the unrational people in society that do not respect and follow the rules.

Another philosopher that would support the death penalty would be Aquinas. Being is the first thing that falls under the apprehension of the practical reason, which is directed to action. Consequently, the first principle in the practical reason is one founded on the nature of good…that good is that which all things seek after. That is the first precept of the law, that good is to be done and promoted, and evil is to be avoided. Evil, in this situation, would be murdering or doing anything to receive the death sentence. All other precepts of the natural law are based upon this; so that all the things which the practical reason naturally apprehends as man’s good belong to the precepts of the natural law under the form of things to be done or avoiding, again such as murdering.

If the United States demonstrates that it is serous about using the death penalty through an increased number of executions, then potential murderers will know their fate before killing. They will know that if caught and convicted, they will face a sure death. In order to promote and maintain a sense of justice and moral order, the death penalty must be used more frequently and quickly. Because death is reserved as punishment for only the worst criminals, it is only fitting that they receive a punishment accordingly. The judicial system should not be afraid to retain the confidence of the public. In looking back to previous societies that relied upon the death penalty, such as ancient Athens and the Roman Empire, one realizes the effectiveness of this sentence and its usefulness as a tool for deterring crime. Although there is no punishment that can entirely eliminate violent crime, a more stringent use of the death penalty would significantly help. The United States must allow history to repeat itself as well as look at the work of philosophers and realize the wisdom that they held, and through more severe use of the death penalty, lessen violent crimes within society.

COSTCO

I. PEOPLE SHOP AT COSTCO BECAUSE COSTCO DELIVERS STRONG VALUE TO ITS SHOPPERS

Costco products have one of the highest values for the dollar spent. As long as Costco can deliver a very strong value to its shoppers, people will continue to shop at Costco. Creating an association with quality is why Costco has been so successful. For example, consumers associate Costco with quality, which has in turn made Costco an established brand.

Costco’s customers have a wide array of demographics with the common denominator being that people are looking for value. However, saving people money over the course of a year isnt the entire part of a value equation, as value is the intersection between product satisfaction, which includes the service components at Costco, product utility, and price. Costco’s customers have confidence that they will find high quality at a good value.

Do my essay on costco CHEAP !

essay writing service

Costco has several advantages over its competitors. First, Costco has very large sales volumes that allow the company to make higher volume purchases than most. Considering the size of Costco’s stores, it’s interesting to note that they only stock a very limited number of products. That’s very few compared to the large variety of products Costco presents because Costco only focuses on a few products in each category. Overhead is minimal with no advertising, and limited service, as Costco’s number one goal is keeping cost low. Indeed, Costco is able to deliver a low cost yet high value to its customers. This allows Costco to achieve very high product turnover, i.e., 14 times per year.

II. COSTCO IS ABLE TO DELIVER LOW COST YET HIGH QUALITY TO ITS CUSTOMERS

Costco utilizes a high volume, low margin, high value product approach. This approach appears to give Costco an advantage over the lowest cost retail competition. By stocking only a few branded goods in each product category, Costco is in essence doing the customers comparison shopping and demanding the best terms from the vendor. Even when it comes to the companys private mark, Kirkland Signature, the company is very serious about the brand equity it is building. For instance, its private label products, Kirkland Signature, compare themselves to the best and Costco is particularly careful not to abuse its customers trust by using the signature label on something second-rate.

To achieve its most important goal of keeping cost down - - so that Costco adheres to its iron-clad rule that margins would stay between 1% and 14% - - Costco works in a simple building usually in a warehouse location. Costcos average store has about 4,000 SKUs, in contrast to 0,000 in a typical supermarket, 40,000 to 60,000 in a discounter like Kmart, and 00,000 in a supercenter, in a 1,000 square foot store warehouse. Fewer SKU’s means less duplication and less variety, more efficient use of shelf space, faster turns, and lower carrying costs for inventory.

Reducing choice has made life simple for everyone. Large packages, even at a low per-serving cost, have allowed Costco to leverage its expense for labor and overhead across a higher average transaction value. Other ways in which Costco creates value is by having a great inventory control system, which basically tracks all inventories when products either enter or leave the building all of which facilitates cross-docking. “Cross-docketing occurs when a distribution center does not store the merchandise but immediately re-ships it to the stores.”

In all, the more Costco sells, and creates efficiencies, the stronger Costco grows its bargaining position with its suppliers. This process creates value, which is passed on to Costco’s customers.

III. COSTCO MAKES MONEY BY SELLING LOW-COST BULK ITEMS AND PASSING SAVINGS ON TO ITS CUSTOMERS

As noted generally above, Costco is a wholesale provider of products and services to a group of clientele who purchase an annual membership to be part of the wholesale club. The underlying objective of Costco is to save its members money on purchases by negotiating with retailers to procure bulk items at the lowest possible price. Costco, in turn, passes the savings to its members. Typically Costco can get bottom line prices by focusing not on many products that many supermarkets do, but by focusing on individual products.

A. Costco’s Profit Formula is Profit=Price (No greater than 14% Cost of Goods) Cost of Goods

Costco’s profit formula is very simplistic. Its profit is derived by the price that it obtains the product, plus a markup on that product of no more than fourteen percent. In other words, Profit=Price (No greater than 14% Cost of Goods) Cost of Goods. This formula has enabled Costco to keep its member base, offer them the best savings, and keep a high inventory turnover rate.

B. The Value of Costco’s Public Customer is $000/year and the Value of its Business Customer is $15/year

Costco can also measure the value of its customer in dollars annually. This is computed by taking their average sales ($4 every and half weeks) and adding it to the annual membership fee ($5 per business account and $40 per public membership). Using this formula the value of a public customer is $,000 annually and the value of a business member is $1,5 annually. In 17, there were a total of ,57 business members and 7,845 public members. Using these figures, we see that on average Costco’s members spend $,746,615.

C. Costco’s Business Model is somewhat Risky as it is Based on Maintaining Various Critical Relationships

Costco relies on its bargaining power to procure merchandise at below most cost by purchasing the merchandise in bulk. The company also offers a limited number of products to its members in hopes that they will purchase those items only. At any point several things may happen that might cause Costco to loose business. First, Costco may loose some of its bargaining power with its distributors. This would cause Costco to have to offer some products at a higher price than it would charge normally and this would in turn lead its member to see less value. Secondly, consumer buying habits may change. Although presently people see that buying in bulk is a cost savings, sometime in the future they might not see it so. This would force the warehouse to loose its member base and loose profits.

It is still undetermined whether Costco’s business can be seen as a fad or a great new way to shop. While Costco certainly has a very innovative and disciplined business model, it is clearly conditioned upon elements that are beyond Costco’s control, to wit, an economic downturn, consumer buying habits, and its ability to negotiate with manufacturers to keep product costs down. Therefore, just because Costco has been successful in the past and is currently successful, it is somewhat risky to assume that Costco will continue to be successful in the future, as its business model is conditioned upon maintaining strong relationships with its customers and suppliers.

IV. THE LOGIC BEHIND COSTCO’S EXECUTIVE MEMBERSHIP IS TO REWARD THE “COMMITTED, HIGH-VALUE MEMBER” AND SIMULATANEOUSLY INCREASE REVENUES

Costco’s operating philosophy is based on the principals of organizational buying. It acts as a “buying agent for its members,” focusing on high-volume, bulk packaged goods. Therefore, Costco is able to consolidate consumer demand for popular products and work closely with their vendors to achieve the best possible cost. This in turn translates into lower prices for Costco members and increased membership for Costco.

Consumers actively seek out membership to these efficient, no-frills, industrial warehouses. Shoppers are required to verify membership upon entry and once again upon exit, contributing to the “serious shopping, serious bargains” allure. In 17, Costco finally realized the power behind their membership approach. The market research Costco gathered with each and every member’s trip to a Costco facility was priceless. This information details consumer preferences, buying behavior, and demographics, all of which can be used to target market new products. “Costco realized that its list of loyal members was a natural market for anything that required the purchaser to trust the supplier.”

In 18, Costco introduced Executive Membership at the request of its members. For a $100 annual fee, “a portfolio of services including auto insurance, mortgage and real estate services, long distance telephone plans, credit card processing, check and business form printing,” became available at a 0% to 40% savings. Business members identified these services as desirable in the annual Costco survey.

The logic behind Executive Membership is directed towards the “committed, high-value Costco member.” With its higher membership fee, Costco knew that the added cost must be offset by greater savings in each of the aforementioned services, without compromising value and efficiency. Executive memberships are often used to increase revenues by appealing to a select group of individuals. It is not geared at the masses, hence the high cost to entry. This enables the supplier to provide exceptional service to those that are interested since there is a smaller group of consumers to which they have to cater. In addition, members receive special privileges, discounts, services, and bragging rights.

In Costco’s Executive Membership plan, Costco simply acts as the liaison between the consumer and the service provider. Costco once again has to negotiate the best possible price with reputable, high quality suppliers, on behalf of its members. The members are then able to pick and chose which services they would like to use. The savings are significantly lower then what is readily available in the marketplace (ie 0% to 40% less). This is much more difficult to achieve on services as compared to food products. Costco was able to attain these savings due to its strong reputation and loyal consumer following. The real concern, however, is can Costco provide these savings on an ongoing basis?

A. Services are a Good Idea for Costco so long as it Remains Focused on its Core Mission to Provide Value to its Customers

Costco has always had a strong corporate philosophy. “If we can’t do it better, we won’t do it at all.” Therefore services initially seem like a good idea for Costco. They are able to offer significant savings in areas that affect consumers’ daily lives. With a proven track record in providing the lowest cost on large volume food products, as well as peripheral services such as optics, pharmacy, and photo processing, the addition of auto insurance, mortgage and real estate services, long distance telephone plans, credit card processing, and check and business form printing, services are definitely feasible. Costco has built its success by continually analyzing their relationships with key suppliers in pursuit of the lowest price on high-volume, quality merchandise. If an offering does not prove to be beneficial to their members or sustainable in the long run, Costco looks to exit the product or find an alternate. So long as Costco continues to remain focused on its core mission to provide value to its customers and constantly evaluate its business portfolio, then Costco should be able to provide services via an Executive Membership program successfully. If not, then Costco will terminate this offering and ensure that the consumer is made whole (ie refund their membership fee). Costco must keep an eye on the costs and the quality of service that is provided by their affiliates. This is difficult task since both aspects are out of their direct control. However Costco is aware that this onus ultimately lies with them. Therefore they must be prepared to face the consequences whether good or bad.

V. COSTCO MUST MARKET ITS SERVICES TO ITS AFFLUENT, UPSCALE, AND THRIFTY MARKET SEGMENT THROUGH THE INTERNET, TRADITIONAL PRINT MEDIUMS AND SALES PROMOTIONS

Costco’s expansion was planned through offering different products such as auto & home insurance, mortgage services, real estate services, phone service, check and forms printing, credit card processing, and health insurance through its executive member services. Costco used a “try before you buy” approach, and used a method for the members to experience the benefits of the membership before they had to pay for it.

Table seven illustrates the marketing effort of Costco towards its executive membership program. A majority of the marketing effort was concentrated by direct mail and also several small kiosks were set up in some warehouses staffed by associates who encouraged shoppers to sign up for the new executive membership. There were several problems with these marketing efforts. First, using direct mail yielded a very poor response for Costco at 1%, when its expected response rate was 0%. Costco’s offerings in its new membership did not rise above the sea of junk mail people received on a daily basis. Second, problems arose when associates were unable to explain the benefits of more complex financial products. This method only yielded a response rate of 10% to 1%.

The direct marketing had been successful in the past due to the nature of the products and services the company was offering. It was easier to convey the benefits and cost savings of Costco’s household products through direct mail than it was for the services offered under the executive membership program. As exhibits 6, 6A, and 6C illustrate Costco has a comparative price advantage in the industries of credit card processing, auto and home insurance, and real estate. There are several ways Costco can market these new services and to prevent the prospective consumer from feeling that Costco’s cost savings are too good to be true.

1. In order to make existing customers aware of the new executive membership Costco could continue with the direct marketing campaign. Costco could also increase the awareness of its new executive membership through its web site. In order to keep existing customers informed and to handle any inquiries regarding any complicated questions the customers may have, Costco should hire experienced consultants. These consultants are more knowledgeable than a regular Costco employee and can handle customer inquiries with more detail. This would lead to more credibility for the new services and offer a focus group like approach that could be met with ways to improve the new services.

. In order to reach customers that are not existing members, Costco can take several cost effective approaches. First would be to advertise in local newspapers which are flexible, timely, have broad acceptance, have good local coverage, and high credibility. Second Costco can market its new services in trade magazines. Since Costco has access to information of its small business customers it can target non-existing customers in similar industries in trade magazines. This medium provides for high geographic and demographic selectivity, credibility, and prestige, high quality reproduction, long life, and good pass along leadership.

. Costco can also use incentive type approaches to attract new users of their services. This approach would also aim to reward loyal customers and to increase the repurchase rate of occasional users. Sales promotions should be aimed to attract brand switchers who are primarily looking for the lowest price, good values, and premiums. Proper use of sales promotions can increase consumer awareness and because of Costco’s excellent reputation it can lead to an increase in market share.

The services that are offered under the new executive membership should first be slowly rolled out and targeted to Costco’s existing customers in test markets across the United States. Costco has chosen to roll out its new services in smaller U.S. markets such as Washington, Arizona, Colorado, and Oregon. These markets should slowly be expanded to include mega markets such as New York, California, and Florida and eventually the international market.

Costco should continue to target its affluent, upscale, and thrifty market segment but also realize that there are other markets that could benefit from its new services under executive membership. Costco can continue to increase its customer base, which currently includes households and small businesses to include small and large corporations, which can also benefit from large cost savings in today’s economical climate.

A. Costco must Roll out its Services Slowly so that Costco is certain that it Maintains its Core Mission of Creating Value for its Existing and Prospective Customers

Costco’s new membership services should be rolled out slowly so that customer feedback could be analyzed and used to fine-tune the services before they are nationally launched. The launch of these new services should also target consumers that are not Costco customers. These include segments such as corporations and lower income consumers. Targeting these segments will benefit Costco in the long run because attracting new customers would increase Costco’s bargaining power among suppliers and in turn enable the company to pass on additional cost savings to existing and prospective customers.

Synopsis

In the article “First cloned human embryo is ready to implant in surrogate mother, scientist claims,” is the issue regarding the cloning of human beings.

Panyiolis Zavos, a fertility expert at the University of Kentucky, claims to have made the worlds first cloned human embryo. He created hybrid embryos by putting DNA into “emptied” cows’ eggs, insisting this was not done in poor taste but as a scientific model for future human cloning efforts. He joins a group, Severino Antinori and the Raelian cult, who have claimed to have made human embryos but these claims have not been verified. Dr. Zavos claims to have created the cloned embryo with cells taken from a woman, then attempting to transfer or implant but due to complications with the surrogate, this was postponed. The embryo was then frozen, as is commonly done with embryos for test tube babies.

Since the U.S. and Europe outlaw human cloning for reproduction this experiment is being done in a secret, undisclosed location. Dr. Jackie O’Connell of Cambridge University expressed doubts over the research and its chances for survival. Dr. O’Connell says most cloned embryos never reach maturity because they survive to the blastocyst stage of 18 cells and after this there is a massive rate of attrition, and Dr. Zavos claims his embryo to be at an early stage with growth of up to about 8 cells.

Dr. Zavos also claims the purpose of his cow’s egg experiment was to get an understanding of the mechanisms of cell developments and cloning method, and not to

be creating monsters.

Analysis

The ethical issue of the article “First cloned human embryo is ready to implant in surrogate mother, scientist claims,” is the fact whether it is for reproduction, noting developments in cell growth or any other reason given, is this truly a justified experiment.

The stakeholders in this experiment are the medical field, insurance companies, and the whole human race. These reproductive scientists believe it to be a way to better understand the growth of the human body, or prevention of sickness or birth defects or disabilities, or even providing children to those with none. The medical field would benefit greatly from this, doctors and hospitals and pharmaceutical companies, inclusive of the numerous companies that would fund and back these experiments. Their belief would be that this cloning would do more good than harm. Insurance companies’ premiums would rise, and more money would be coming in their doors. They may also believe this to be costly but doing more good than harm because it could be considered preventive healthcare, alleviating sickness among other things, and in the end they would have more money coming in than going out. When considering the human race as a whole, I don’t believe this to be as great. Everyone would not be getting equal, nor would everyone get the same opportunity and some may not even get an opportunity at all. The cost for this would be outrageous, between cost with the cloning and cost with healthcare, today most people can hardly afford healthcare itself. It comes down to an issue of money, because money speaks and if you don’t possess it then basically you don’t have a voice to be heard. I believe that if people utilize this

reproductive service then basically they would be getting what they deserve and pay the price for their decision, whether is be a good experience or a bad one, it would be their personal choice.

Is the miracle of life to be treated in this manner? If you feel you have got a “lemon”clone can you return it as you do a car? There is a point when people need to stop trying to recreate something that was never their creation to begin with. Life consists of ups and downs, and health and sickness, and much more. We have to accept life for the beauties as well as the ugliness, and with this are opportunities for growth instead of wasting our time trying to obtain the unobtainable.

School Dress Code

It has come to our attention that a new dress code will be strictly enforced due to the thought that new standards will reduce the amount of fighting on campus. A stricter policy will not help solve this problem. Students will continue to dress as they like and result with more people in trouble than before. Instead of proceeding with this ineffective method of conformity, perhaps the hostility between groups could be solved by talking in after school sessions, which would be more directed toward the problem. A new dress code would just be scraping the surface of the issue, but a more direct approach could have a better effect and possibly stop the need for a new dress code.

Changes will continue to be made in our dress code in an attempt to alter the way students currently handle their problems. As a student, I feel that this is only amending our rights to dress as an individual and that Im getting an undeserved punishment. There are many more that feel the same way and Im sure they will dress however they wish, not regarding the consequences set by the administration. In return this would cause them to be penalized for something that wouldnt have affected them before. The new dress code will also provide a false boundary in general for the clothes that symbolize controversial or racial subjects. It is not possible for students (or people) to change their ideas about some things just because they are not allowed to advertise them. Such matters are displayed everywhere and in no way are able to be avoided at school. We

are at the age where we are expected to be respectful and tolerant of everybody. However, there are still some that dont know right from wrong, and regulations against clothing will not teach them not to fight.

What can be done to resolve the physical conflicts at our school? Perhaps another, more effective way of punishment would be a type of mediation or conference with the students that have fought or that try to start fights. When a group of people try to start something with another, it is clearly a sign of disrespect or intolerance that only a joint meeting between the two groups could solve. Very few people would disagree that a conference would be far worse a punishment than a stricter dress code could ever be. If the attitudes of these students change, perhaps the controversial clothing would cease on its own. Another hopeful plus to the decision to deal with the problem of fighting in this way would be that students not only learn to be respectful of others at school, but also out of school, and later on in life.

Limitations on clothing only effect people at school, but something like respect can affect you the rest of your life. If this method of discipline went into effect, the students would take it upon themselves to question whether they should be wearing the things they do. Until that time students will want to wear what they life and hopefully someday, their attitudes will change.

Introduction

This is the Test Plan for the ABA-1010 DSS Satellite Receiver Board, its related drivers and software, and the ABA-100 Smart Card Reader. This board is a single slot PCI bus card. It inputs RF signal from a DSS outdoor unit which consists of a satellite dish and low-noise block (LNB) converter. It demodulates the RF signal into data streams which are then submitted to an error correction process, and subsequently to a substreams identification process. The substreams, which the user has selected and which he is authorized to receive, may undergo decryption process, if required. The board outputs the selected data substreams to the host PC over the PCI bus. The ABA-100 Smart Card Reader is used in conjunction with the ABA-1010 to read the user¡¯s access card which allow the user to receive the signal he is authorized to receive.

SOCIAL DIFFERENTIATION PROBLEMS OF INEQUALITY

Social Stratification- the division of society in such a way that some people get more

rewards than others.

Buy cheap Social Differentiation term paper

cheap term papers

Bases of Stratification

1. Wealth

major classes

1. Capitalists- are those who own the means of production and hire others

. Workers- neither owns the means of production nor employs others;

hence they are forced to work for capitalists.

1 minor class

1. Small capitalists- owns the means of production but do most of the

work together.

. Power- the ability to control the behaviour of others, even against their will.

- Associated with wealth

- Most sociologists agree that people with more wealth tend to have more

power.

Marxist Theorists- group consists of capitalists

- Capitalists set the limits of political debate of the governments

actions, protecting their own interests

Elite Theorists- a lot of power resides in what C. Wright Mills called the Power

Elite

Power Elite- a small group of individuals who hold top positions in the

federal government, military and corporations and who have

similar backgrounds, values and interests

Plurarist Theorists- argue that power is not tightly concentrated, but widely

Dispersed

. Prestige- also called the Status System

Status System- a system in which people are stratified according

to their social prestige

- Prestige differs from wealth and power. Wealth and power are objective entities, but prestige is subjective.

Status Inconsistency- the condition in which the same individual is given

conflicting status rankings, such as being high in occupation

but low in ethnicity or gender.

STARTIFICATION SYSTEMS A GLOBAL VIEW

1. Egalitarian System- believing in human ethnicity

= Hunting-gathering societies are the most egalitarian

Tend to be egalitarian primarily because there is hardly any opportunity in

their small-scale environment for anyone to accumulate wealth

. Master-slave System- some people are held in servitude as someone else’s

Property

= The emergence of slavery has partly been attributed to the great accumulation

of wealth in those ancient societies that could produce huge food surpluses with

improved technology

= Some modern slavery is similar to the ancient form of human bondage called

CHATTEL SLAVERY

= Most slaves today fall victim to debt bondage

Debt Bondage- forces whole families to work in fruitless efforts to pay off

Loans

. Feudal System- less extreme in practicing inequality

groups of stratified societies

1. Serfs or peasants- those who worked the land

. lords or landlords- those who appropriated some of the produce and labor

of the other

= The feudal system today persists only in a few places in Latin America

4. Caste system- feudal and master-slave are similar to caste system, a relatively

rigid stratification system in which people’s positions are ascribed

and fixed.

ORDER OF CASTE SYSTEM

1. Brahmins (priests and scholars)

. Warriors

. Merchants

4. Artisans and menial workers

5. Untouchables

= Untouchables are in effect outcasts and could almost never become members of a higher caste

= Members of higher caste fear that they would suffer ritual pollution if they touched an outcast or passed through the shadow of an outcast.

5. Class System- less rigidly segregated than the caste system

- A relatively open stratification system in which people’s positions is achieved and changeable

- Primary form of stratification in virtually all societies around the globe

Kuznets Curve- the changing relationship between development and inequality

- named after Simon Kuznets

NEW APPROACHES TO STRATIFICATION

1. Feminist Perspective

= The traditional study of stratification focuses on men only. Their income, occupation, and education are often used to determine not only their own social class but also that of women who are their daughters or wives.

= Thus, to feminist, gender inequality should be considered a key part of a society’s social stratification. A person’s gender should be used, along with the traditional indicators of social class, to determine the individual’s class.

. Social Diversity

types of ascribed stratification

1. Age- the same individuals experience within their life span both advantages at a younger age and disadvantages at an advanced age.

. Gender- discrimination against women creates a loss for all female individuals but no net loss for families with an equal number of females and males.

. Ethnic- discrimination hurts all minority individuals and families

IDENTIFYING CLASSES

Social class- category of people who have about the same amount of income, power and prestige.

different methods for identifying a person’s class

1. Reputational Method- identifying social classes by selecting a group of people and asking them to rank others.

= The Reputational method is useful for investigating the class structure of a small community where everybody knows practically everybody else.

Disadvantages

1. Cannot be applied to large cities because it is impossible to find individuals who know thousands of other people.

. It is impossible to generalize the findings from one community to another because the informants can judge only their own community.

. It is impossible to finds unanimity among the reputation judges in a community.

. Subjective Method- identifying social classes by asking people to rank themselves

. Objective Method- involves identifying social classes using income, occupation, and education to rank people

The Spanish Civil War Historiographic Essay

In the years following World War I, Europe was the scene of rising political

tensions and military power struggles. With Communism gaining power in eastern

Europe, the governments and people of the western countries began to explore different

forms of bureaucratic control of their country. Spain was no different. From 16 to

1, Spain experienced a military revolution under the guidance of General Francisco

Franco. This revolt transpired not just from a military coup, but from various political

and social reasons.

In his book, The Politics of Revenge, Paul Preston examines the Spanish Civil

War as an extension of all social and political tensions that evolved after World War I.

After World War I, the European working class began to lose faith in government and

sought out reform. It became obvious that Europeans became wearied with

bureaucracies. They felt they had too much power and were keeping the working class

restrained. People desired a better life and all over Europe governments began to see

opposition. The most significant movement was the Bolsheviks gaining power in Russia.

Preston explains that Spain had developed into “the latest battleground in an

ongoing European civil war whose previous battles had been Vienna in 14, Berlin in

1, Lisbon in 16, Rome 1” (Preston 10, 5). Preston’s theory is viable in that

Europe was seemingly transformed into a theater of war within various states. But the

Spanish Civil War was more or less a military overthrow led by General Francisco

Franco. Vladimir Lenin had gained support from the military through his campaign in

Russia, but his battle was seeded in the rights of the middle class.

Preston also contends that the Spanish Civil War is often ignored when discussing

the evolution of the onset of World War II. Most of the researches done on the

beginnings of the war fail to give credence to the Spanish Civil War and its association

with the Second World War. But to neglect the Spanish Civil War in its connection to

World War II is to overlook the timing of Hitler’s expansion into Poland. Preston states

that Hitler used Franco and his operations to assess the response of the Western powers to

the “vagaries of the Francoist cause.” So Preston argues that the Spanish Civil War was a

gauge to the spark of Hitler’s war machine (Preston 10, 5).

Another view of the cause of the Spanish Civil War was the deaths of two

political leaders. In his book Spain The Vital Years, Luis Bolin explains the rise of

General Primo de Rivera in 1 and his influence on King Alphonso and the

government. Bolin states that the King acted as a constitutional monarchy and that the

previous regime of politicians that hampered the country from effective rule. Rivera’s

coup was the only alternative for King Alphonso and a military dictatorship was

established. There was no opposition from the political parties and the working classes.

Rivera was able to settle the unrest in Spain and bring it to the verge of prosperity in

10 (Bolin 167, 7-). Most of the Spanish citizens were benefited from the stability

that Rivera had brought to the country. The working class avoided labor strikes and labor

leaders had a positive association with him (Bolin 167, 7). During his seven year

reign, Rivera halted the strife that had engulfed Spain the previous decade.

However in March10, Rivera suddenly died. Bolin states that Rivera’s “mild

and efficient dictatorship would have saved the Monarchy and avoided the armed strife

that broke out in 16” (Bolin 167, ). So Bolin believes that Rivera could have saved

Spain from civil war and Franco’s dictatorship. After his death, Rivera’s successors tried

to highlight his mistakes and put the blame on the King. The following succession of

leaders attempted to bury Rivera and his work in the past. Bolin states that “there was no

attempt to continue the work that had brought Spain to almost unprecedented heights of

prosperity and internal peace” (Bolin 167, 10). The new leadership of the government

could have invested in Rivera’s enterprises, but through selfishness and egotism failed to

advance Spain’s position of welfare.

Another figure that Bolin contends, whose death led to the Spanish Revolution

was Calvo Sotelo. Sotelo occupied to position of minister of finance under Rivera and

was very proficient in economic and administrative procedures. He was able to forge

plans that helped Spain through the world-wide depression and aided the country in

developing ordinances. Bolin states that he “was as much at ease when balancing the

budget as when drafting municipal and provincial statutes comparable to the best in any

land” (Bolin 167, 141). This illustrates the importance of Sotelo in regards to the

Spanish government.

But Sotelo eventually became leader of the Right-wing opposition in the Spanish

Parliment. He enjoyed the privilege to attend all meetings and participate vigorously in

the matters of the state (Bolin 167, 141). Sotelo was a very important and critical figure

to the country and because of his influences and his devotion to the Right, he was

threatening to his opposition. Therefore Sotelo was kidnapped and murdered. Sotelo was

taken from his apartment at 00 a.m. on July 1, 16. Four men that identified

themselves as members if the Civil Guard, accompanied him from his apartment. The

men put him in a van and took their seats alongside him. A gunman then fired two

point-blank shots to Sotelo’s neck and he was killed instantly (Bolin 167, 1-). The

Republican government tried the usual cover-up but there were too many witnesses

(Bolin 167, ). They had eliminated a key figure of opposition to their cause. Thus

with the deaths of two prominent figures of Spanish constitutional government, the

Franco’s movement had separated key components of resistance.

Stanley Payne argues that the weakened state of the middle class along with

divisions formed within the Republican government were the prime causes that initiated

the Spanish Civil War. In his book The Spanish Revolution, Payne argues that during the

months leading to the revolution the Spanish middle classes were numb to the events

unfolding within the country. He claims that even though the economy was in a

downward spiral, the divisions of middle class leadership and numerous factions within

the political realm could offer no viable response to the revolution (Payne 170, 16). In

a state of weakened government, a military coup is simplified.

Payne points out that “revolutionaries were actually hoping to provoke the Army

to revolt so as to force it into an indefensible role in which its antileftist elements might

be destroyed, leaving the middle classes without protection and opening the way to a

leftist takeover” (Payne 170, 16). This premise accounts for the fact that the

revolutionaries were presuming that the divisions of government would rely on the army

to protect the symmetry of the nation, but the leftist knew they would sway the army to

their side.

Payne states that “the left Republican leaders soon sank into almost absolute

paralysis” (Payne 170, 1). He claims that if the Republican leaders had made an

effort to uphold the constitution and maintain the integrity of the state that the revolution

might not have occurred. This was because only half of the army had joined in the

revolt. Most of the Nay, Air Force, and police force had remained faithful (Payne 170,

1). So if the Republicans had acted swiftly and astutely, the entire course of Spanish

history would have been altered.

Though the Spanish Civil War was a bloody military coup, it was shaped from

various reasons. The social tensions in all of Europe, the deaths of two prominent

Spanish political figures, and the instability of the government led to the revolution.

General Franco’s takeover and subsequent dictatorship were aided by these

circumstances.

Many of these events include the Civil Rights Act of 1866, the 14th amendment, the Civil Rights Act of 1875, the Civil Rights Act of 157, the Civil Rights Act of 164, the Civil Rights Act of 168, the Bakke v Regents of California 178, and the Supreme Court Rulings University of Michigan, June , 00. Most of these events involve citizenship and civil rights as a US citizen.

During the 1860’s a new amendment was added to the Constitution, which is known as the 14th amendment. The 14th amendment was added to the Constitution because blacks feared that the Supreme Court would deny them citizenship and that they would overturn the Civil Rights Act. The 14th amendment states that anyone born in the United States is granted citizenship. The 14th amendment also guaranteed equal protection under law and that no state could deprive a person of life, liberty, and property without due process under law. The pros of this law was that it guaranteed citizenship to anyone born in the United States, equal protection of the laws, and that no state could deprive a person of life, liberty, and property without due process under law. The cons of this law was that the law did not mention citizenship to former slaves not born in the United States, and also that any place of accommodation or facilities did not have to be equal to others. The 14th amendment affected our future because it gave us citizenship and as we grow to be adults, this amendment supports the right to vote.

Through the 1860’s Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866. The main idea of the act was to declare that anyone born in the United States is a citizen, regardless to race or color. Any person who denied these rights to former slaves was guilty of a crime and faced a fine and/or imprisonment not exceeding a year. The pros of the Civil Rights Act of 1866 was that it gave African Americans or any minority a chance to be a normal citizen, and it also allowed them to have a normal American citizen rights such as to sue, purchase, sell, or inherit. The cons of the Civil Rights Act of 1866 is that it brought began to start a terror group called the Ku Klux Klan, and once the Ku Klux Klan emerged the guarantee of the civil rights of African Americans began to fall. Another negatives are that the population of the United States increased dramatically, in addition if an immigrant in the US has a child, the child is a citizen and the parent isn’t which leads to more immigration and a higher population. This affects us greatly because all people of our generation have mainly been born in the United States. We have all experienced this act and we all wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the act.

During 1875, the Civil Rights Act was passed. The Civil Rights Act of 1875 stated that everyone within the jurisdiction of the United States shall have full and equal enjoyment of accommodations, advantages, facilities, privileges of inns, public conveyances on land or water, and theaters of amusement. The pros of the Civil Rights Act of 1875 was that it gave every citizen, regardless race and color, the equal and full enjoyment of public places. This allowed everyone to have an equal opportunity to enjoy his or her surroundings. The cons of this act is that the Civil Rights Act of 1875 goes against the 14th amendment because it says that any state shall make or enforce any law which abridge the privileges or immunities of the citizens of the US. Instead of state, it should say states, persons, or corporations. Another con is that the Civil Rights Act of 1875 lead to the Jim Crow Laws and the rise of terrorist groups. The Civil Rights Act of 1875 will affect our future because it allow the public places for every citizen of the United States to enjoy.

In the 150’s another Civil Rights Act was introduced called the Civil Rights Act of 157. The Civil Rights Act gave power to the federal government to interfere with states that did not allow African Americans the right to vote. The act also gave the federal government the power to stop states from denying black suffrage. The pros of this act was that it enforced voting rights, especially for black people, and it also allowed the federal to investigate discriminatory in states. The cons of this act were that it gave the federal government extra power over the states instead of a state taking care of its own affair. This act can affect our future in a way that gave the minority groups, such as blacks, the right to vote and that discriminatory man be reduced in the future.

In 164 a new act was passed and it was called the 164 Civil Rights Act. The act made racial discrimination in public places, such as theaters, restaurants, and hotels illegal. The act also called for employers to provide equal employment opportunities. The pros of the Civil Rights Act of 164 were that it tried to give every citizen equal opportunity regarding race and color. The Act also tried to stop racial discrimination throughout public places. The cons of the Civil Rights Act of 164 was that it interfered with the first amendment of the Constitution, freedom of speech because people should be able to speak their mind in public places. Another con of the Civil Rights Act of 164 is that it did not mention equal employment opportunity for gender. The Civil Rights Act of 164 can affect our future because it can allow all races to have an equal employment opportunity and it can again slow down or stop racial slurs and discrimination.

In 168 Congress adopted a new act called the Civil Rights Act of 168. The act basically guaranteed open housing to all citizens of the United States. This act aloud anyone to sell or rent a house with the exception of owner-occupied homes sold directly by the owner. The Pros of the Civil Rights Act of 168 included that the federal government would protect the people’s civil rights, and the act also guaranteed open housing, the sale or rental of a house, also known as fair housing. The cons of the act was that there was nothing accomplished in inner cities for the majority of America’s black people and that the nation began to separate become unequal. The Civil Rights Act of 168 can affect our future because it allows us to conduct the selling or renting of a house.

The case of Regents of the University of California v. Allan Bakke started when affirmative action came before the Supreme Court in 178. The case was about a student named Allan Bakke, who was white, which was denied admission to the university’s medical school although his scores were higher than other students admitted. Bakke argued that he was being discriminated because he was white. The Supreme Court agreed with him because although schools could take race or ethnic background into consideration for variety, a quota system was not legal. The pros of this decision is that the racial quota system violated the Civil Rights Act of 164 and that it also violated the equal protection clause in the 14th amendment. Some good things that also came out of this case were that bakke won he would be admitted to medical school, also that now because of this case white people will not lose out on jobs to less qualified people because of affirmative action. The cons of the decision are that majorities have to get in by high score and minorities could get in because of their race and color and that they are minorities. This could affect our future in such a way that minorities can still get their fair shot without white people getting unfair conditions either, this case made it even for both sides.

On June , 00 the US Supreme court sustained the right of universities to consider race in admissions procedures in order to achieve a diverse student body. This means that race will not be a major factor in the admission process yet it will still be a factor. This gives the more intelligent students a better chance of being accepted. It also restricts colleges to deny anyone because of their racial background being a minority or white. The negative are that minorities will have difficulty getting accepted into top colleges. With that being said the diversity of colleges is going to decrease.

This decision by the Supreme Court has a great affect on the chances of our college acceptances. Now that race is not a major factor the more qualified student will have a better chance of being accepted. Yet race is still a factor and with this decision the percent of minorities in top schools are going to decrease dramatically. The minorities are going to have biggest disadvantage from this ruling because the number of top minorities is low but now they will have a tougher time of being accepted.

From the Civil Rights Act of 1866 up to Today, the United States and its government have tried to balance out citizenship for all. During that time period, the United States has tried to come up with solutions so that everyone is promised life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
