In 1, the Nazis were rumored to be developing an atomic bomb. The United States initiated its own program under the Army Corps of Engineers in June 14. America needed to build an atomic weapon before Germany or Japan did.


General Leslie R. Groves, Deputy Chief of Construction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was appointed to direct this top-secret project. He established three large engineering and production centers at remote U.S. sites the Clinton Engineer Works at Oak Ridge, Tenn.; the Hanford Engineer Works in eastern Washington State; and Project Y, a code-named site 100 miles north of Albuquerque at Los Alamos, N.M.


Meanwhile, experiments in a small laboratory beneath the University of Chicagos abandoned Stagg Field were expanding understanding of atomic theory. The first controlled nuclear reaction occurred under Stagg Field. Italian physicist Enrico Fermi managed the University of Chicago reactor, called Chicago Pile 1 (CP-1). Nobel Prize-winner Fermi had fled Fascist Europe. On the afternoon of December , 14, it happened. Under the abandoned west stands of Stagg Field, the first controlled nuclear reaction occurred. Humankind had controlled energy released from the nucleus of the atom. CP-1 paved the way for Oak Ridge and Hanford to develop ways of obtaining nuclear fuel for atomic weapons.

Scientists now had to create the fuel for an atomic bomb. The Oak Ridge facility separated the nuclear fuel U-5 from U-8, natural uranium. Since scientists needed to find fuel for the reactors, meant using uranium (U-5) or plutonium (Pu-8), the only suitable substances know by 14. Project leaders did not know how quickly or how much of each they could produce, so they decided to produce both at the same time. The Hanford Engineer Works produced plutonium. The search for this location included sites along the Colorado and Columbia Rivers in California, Oregon, and Washington. The isolated 500,000-acre Hanford site offered security for sensitive operations. Large quantities of electricity and cooling water (at least 5,000 gallons per minute) were available and a mild climate allowed year-round work.


The facility encompassed three small towns -- Hanford, White Bluffs, and Richland--and bordered the Columbia River. Sheep had grazed the flat, rocky countryside, which was dotted with orchards, vineyards, and farms. To build the facility, the townships of Richland, White Bluffs, and Hanford vanished. As at Oak Ridge, 1,500 people were relocated in the process. Close to a half-million acres were purchased for more than $5.1 million by the spring of 14. The new facility was named Hanford Engineer Works after the riverside village.


Theoretical physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer (104-167), who also directed Los Alamos research, identified top scientists and engineers from universities nationwide. In November 14, General Groves and Oppenheimer chose the site where the first atomic bombs were designed and built. The site at Los Alamos, N.M. had been a boys school and Oppenheimer had visited it in the 10s.


At Los Alamos, an international team of scientists and engineers labored around the clock to create the first atomic weapons. For its remote location and existing school buildings, it helped make Los Alamos the perfect choice for a research and development site. The owners of the school were willing to sell it to the military for $440,000, since they were having problems obtaining and keeping qualified teachers during the war. By March 14, Los Alamos had became an intellectual boomtown. Known as the hill, Los Alamos produced two bombs. One, nicknamed Little Boy, was a gun-type weapon that used U-5. A slug of U-5 would be projected down a gun barrel into the center of another piece of U-5. When combined, a nuclear explosion would occur. The second bomb, Fat Man, used implosion to detonate plutonium. Here, explosives would surround the plutonium ball. When detonated, they would compress the plutonium, causing a nuclear explosion.

There are actually two instances of parallelism in this excerpt. The first excerpt is all in one sentence. Irony- Page 15- “When they inspected his handbooks they found that he had over ninety-three thousand dollars in the bank and ten thousand dollars in good securities. And also the fact that they grew up without any luxuries, and all of a sudden are wealthy defines irony.


Symbolism- Page 185- “Missy Adam say come! Missy Cathy bad- come quick. Missy yell, scream.”


This excerpt symbolizes how Asian Americans, although through and through Americans, were looked down upon during the time period that this book takes place. Lee, who is quoted in this passage, speaks perfectly good English and is very well educated, but for a time in this book he speaks broken English so he would be accepted as the Trask’s butler. Later, in the book Lee finally opens up and shows his scholar and even has the dream of opening up a bookstore. This symbolizes the possibility of overcoming racial prejudice with the help of kind souls such as the Trask’s.

Some staff may be leaders, and others, followers; therefore, understanding the patterns of relationships amongst staff is a key element.

Effective management does not equate with effective leadership. Do they have the characteristics, skills, and abilities of a successful leader? According to Weiss (000), characteristics of good leaders include energy, ideas, success, responsiveness, and command. Leaders must have positive energy and charisma, which stimulates their staff. These leaders have many ideas to share, and previous successes, which support their effectiveness. Staff will have confidence in their leaders’ abilities, faith that they will lead them in the right direction, and will feel validated by being included in the planning process. Command refers to “perseverance in promoting a plan and quickness in reacting to challenges” (Weiss, 000). Weiss (000) also discusses important abilities of an effective leader. They exemplify their own beliefs and values in their day to day performance. They go that extra mile and always work in collaboration with staff. Suggestions, to enhance processes and problem solve, are always included for consideration. Extra efforts by staff are acknowledged and insufficiencies are dealt with. Indecisiveness is not an option for the effective leader. In this situation, staff will lose faith and respect for their leader. It is imperative that today’s leaders continue their own education by attending workshops, seminars and continuing education courses. Not all leadership skills and abilities are innate; they must be learned. Along with faith and respect, staff must trust that their leaders are directing them on the right path. Delegation of duties involves staff in the functioning of the organization and fosters a buy in, collaboration, and faith that the organization is moving in a positive direction. It is imperative that staff understands exactly what is expected of them to ensure their success. The importance of influencing peoples’ performance is also expressed by Weiss (000). Leaders must acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of their staff. They must be treated fairly, equitably, and must be trusted. When planning for any project or fulfilling a management position, successful leaders must be sought.


An approach to leadership follows various theoretical models. For this merger/acquisition transition, the path-goal theory, developed by Robert House, is applied (Robbins, 001). This theory supports the idea that “it’s the leader’s job to assist his or her followers in attaining their goals and to provide the direction or support or both needed to ensure that their goals are compatible with the overall objectives of the group or organization.” (Robbins, 001, p.) During this merger/acquisition, leaders will be sought for supporting the transition and assisting staff through the process, while at the same time, maintaining or improving productivity. The leaders’ role is to assist the staff to achieve “their work goals and make the journey along the path easier”. (Robbins, 001, p.) Four leadership behaviors are identified in this theory. They include directive, supportive, participative, and achievement oriented (Robbins, 001). Directive leadership will be used to explain to staff their roles and responsibilities within the transitioned organization. It is important for staff to understand job expectations, as well as, specifics on how to accomplish their work in an efficient manner. Supportive leadership will improve job satisfaction by letting staff know that their needs are considered and valued. During the merger/acquisition there will undoubtedly be, job losses, and changes in roles, responsibilities, and job descriptions. Staff will need to understand that their leaders understand the difficult times they are going though, and assist those that will be unemployed to be successful in seeking other jobs. The participative leadership style will include staff in the decision making process. Their ideas and suggestions will be considered as a group and decisions made. This leadership style encourages staff buy-in, improved compliance, and satisfaction with the final outcomes. With staff inclusion in the decision making process, resistance to change can be somewhat reduced. The final leadership behavior to discuss is achievement �oriented behavior. By setting ambiguous work related tasks employees are encouraged to work at their highest level (Robbins, 001). One of our new organization’s goals is to have less bureaucratic structural design, which will empower staff to take ownership of their responsibilities and productivity, and encourage greater participatory communication.


During the process of massive change, there is an increased need for communication between management and staff. For some organizations, lack of communication may continue after a merger/acquisition. According to Tom Geddie of ABC “companies are discovering that they cannot take employees for granted if they want to thrive in today’s increasingly complex business environment”. (Anonymous, 17)


While most companies understand the need for increased or better communication, the question is how do they know what is the best method for their company? Collecting information about the communication techniques other organizations use, provides useful information, but is not a blueprint for improvement. Organizations can obtain many strategies for employee communication by researching other successful company’s communication style. However, just because some other company does something well, this doesn’t mean it will work for every organization. It could even be detrimental. What you do must be aligned and crafted to support your business mission and values. (Ackley, 17)


Ackley provides an excellent guide with regard to what employee communication should accomplish. “Employee communication, like every function, must help the organization make money, save money, increase customer satisfaction, and demonstrate the organization’s people values. And it must propel the organization’s vision by helping teach employees how to do their work…” (Ackley, 17) An organization’s vision and mission are covertly and overtly communicated even they are not written down. Employees demonstrate the organizations mission, values or personality in their work ethic. (Ackley, 17)


Although there is no one best way to implement employee communication during stressful times, such as a merger/acquisition. James Secord, CEO of Lakewood Publications went through three separate takeovers in sixteen months during 14 and 15. He gives four basic principals to keep the communication strong between management and staff. He states that first there needs to be a “shared vision as well as shared incentives”. (Secord, 16) It is important that everyone be asked to participate in the communication process.


Next, it is critical to create an atmosphere of openness. Share as much information with employees as possible. Don’t hold anything back. Even if there is no new information, keep communicating. Openness is the antidote to crippling uncertainty.


Middle and senior management need to make themselves available to staff. It is extremely important, no matter how busy, to make time to be in the department. They should ask staff how they are doing, and allow them to express their fears so management can address all concerns. It is important to be prepared to go through some tough times. Communication is imperative. Leaders must try not to anticipate how staff will react to bad news. They may surprise you.


Another aspect that goes hand in hand with better communication is the empowerment of employees. Particularly when staff has been downsized, the remaining staff needs to be motivated and energized. The importance of empowering the remaining staff is critical to the success of this merger/acquisition. When staff size is reduced, the remaining staff frequently has heavier workloads and extended hours, which lead to higher rates of absenteeism and turnover, both of which are very costly to the organization. In order to regain our competitive edge we need to make some changes.


According to Dr. Gail Cook Johnson, president of REACON Management Inc., “companies that provide superior service gain their competitive advantage by empowering employees”. (11) She lists a number of attributes that organizational leaders consistently do which improve their employee’s performance.


Management must follow through with what they say they will do, rather than say one thing and do another. Management needs to do more than just state high ideals and principals. They must be willing to update systems that improve employee’s ability to do their jobs well.


Fairness is another trait that employees notice about good management. Employees need to have clear expectations about what behavior is acceptable and unacceptable. It is also important to be clear about the goals of the organization and how staff can accomplish them.


It is important to demonstrate value for employee’s ideas and encourage them to make suggestions. Allowing staff to carry out their recommendation keeps them more connected and committed to the process and the organization. Some propose that in order to encourage employee suggestions that management pledge to address those submissions within 7 hours. (Epstein, 18) When management gives staff more flexibility and personal responsibility to solve customer issues then both staff and customer satisfaction increases.


Empowering staff is not just about the latest human resource trend. It is a management tool, which increases the intrinsic rewards for staff, thereby making their jobs more satisfying and fulfilling. It is rewarding to both employees and customers and, therefore, makes good business sense. (Johnson, 11)


The one important need, of a group in transition, is effective communication. For the leadership team to expect high levels of commitment, staff must be made aware of the mission philosophy and goals of the organization, and their relationship to them. It is essential to create a healthy organization to establish dialogue and communication that will connect people throughout the organization. Effective teams are built on a foundation of inclusiveness, collaboration, communication, relationships, vision and accountability, with communication being one of the most critical elements. (Donnelly, 00, p. 107) Clear communication is the link between all levels of the organization. Distributing useful information to employees about planned change and providing them with a means of giving feedback is essential. Communication is of utmost importance before, during, and after any change process.


Another important aspect of the needs of individuals or groups is to be able to share the vision of an organization. It depicts where the team wants to go and what it will look like when the team gets there. It is an image of the future. Leaders can articulate what an organization or team can and should accomplish as a means of drawing attention to the vision.


Fairness and justice are needs that for many people must be fulfilled. Staff is much more effective and efficient when working in an environment that is tempered by fairness and justice. Staff should see that everyone is being treated the same. (Weiss, p.5)


Two very important needs of staff member are appreciation and acknowledgement. It is important to take the time to thank team members and recognize them for their achievements and efforts. To create recognition and appreciation models that work, leaders must focus on things that are within their control. Leaders can create a recognition plan that is meaningful, and creates a culture of pride and teamwork. Employees need to know that their efforts are valued, and that their attempts to improve the organization are a beneficial and appreciated. (Donnelly, 00, p. 14) By communicating the appreciation of the leadership team to the staff it creates a culture where it is safe to try new things.


Mergers and acquisitions happen due to fiscal issues. Its success depends on a well thought out leadership plan. As discussed, there are many critical issues pertaining to this merger/acquisition. None is more important than the resource of people, management, and front line staff, who work tirelessly to keep our organization running, improving and succeeding well into the future.

In proving this point, Happy’s dialogue proves that he is a compulsive womanizer who treats women purely as sex objects and has little respect for the many he seduces, “The only trouble is, it gets like bowling or something. I just keep knockin’ them over and it doesn’t mean anything” (146). For Happy, sexuality is a way that he relieves himself whenever he feels disgusted, “I get that any time I want, Biff. Whenever I feel disgusted. The only trouble is, it gets like bowling or something. I just keep knockin’ them over and it doesn’t mean anything” (146). Happy seduces women in whom he has no real interest, especially women engaged to executives above him in the corporate structure, “I don’t know what gets into me, maybe I just have an overdeveloped sense of competition or something, but I went and ruined her, and furthermore I can’t get rid of her” (146). Happy uses women to bring himself up so, that he could feel more confident and desired. Another reason is that he would seduce the executives’ wives so that he could undermine the executives to feel that he was of some self-importance. A major reason why he is a womanizer is because he yearns for attention, due to the fact that he never received it from his mother, Linda. Linda feels that both Happy and Biff are the causes to Willy’s problems because they are disappointments and failures. Later on in the play, Happy reveals that he wants to meet a woman of substance like his mother, but he never will because he loves the attention of many women and is unfit to be loyal to just one woman.


Happy is quite confident that he is on the right track, but yet at the same time, he is lonely. Happy dreams of being successful and has the general idea of how it will feel, but has no clue on how to obtain it. “I gotta show some of those pompous, self-important executives over there that Hap Loman can make the grade. I want to walk into the store the way he walks in” (146). Happy wants to be successful, just like the executives, but he never will be successful because he doesn’t have any ambition to get him where he wants to go and to be. He has this dream that he will not let go, but sooner or later he will realize that he didn’t amount to anything. Happy feels that he knows more than the merchandise manager and has a dire want to be the merchandise manager, “I got more in my pinky finger than he’s got in his head” (146). Happy also plans to stay right there in the city to show everyone that, “I’m gonna beat this racket! The Loman Brothers!” (105). Over Willy’s grave he exclaims, “…Willy Loman did not die in vain. He had a good dream. It’s the only dream you can have-to come out number-one man.” (106).

When Willy is having one of his flashbacks there is a dialogue that reveals how Willy is towards Happy. “I’m losing weight, you notice, Pop?” said Happy (150). However, Linda views Happy as a “philandering bum-” (16). Linda is well aware of Happy’s affairs with many women. In the end of the play, when Happy leads the desertion of his father, at the restaurant, Linda has bitter resentment towards Happy, “Did you have to go to women tonight? You and your lousy rotten whores!” (17). At this point, Linda is heart broken and has an immense amount of resentment towards Happy for not loving and helping Willy at his most distraught moments. When Happy tries to gain recognition by his parents by saying, “I’m losing weight, you notice, Pop?” and “I’m gonna get married, Mom. I wanted to tell you.”, they ignore him as if he is invisible. Happy has learned to say what people want to hear, but neither of his parents take him seriously.


As the play progresses there is a realization that Happy only cares about Happy. A perfect example is when Happy abandons Willy in his most distraught moments, saying to the girls he’s picked up, “No, that’s not my father. He’s just a guy” (1). It’s no wonder Happy rejects his father after his father’s lifetime rejection of him. However, Happy is always saying that he wants to help, but when it comes to that point, Happy backs down and leaves the mess to someone else.


There are many parallels that are between Happy and Willy. Happy is the stunted incarnation of Willy’s worst traits and the embodiment of the lie of the happy American Dream. He shares Willy’s capacity for self-delusion, trumpeting himself as the assistant buyer at his store, when in reality; he is only an assistant to the assistant buyer. It would make perfectly sense if Happy was the favorite rather than Biff because Happy and Willy have so much in common.


Happy is one-dimensional and static throughout the play having no realization of what actually went on, “All right, boy. I’m gonna show you and everybody else that Willy Loman did not die in vain. He had a good ream. It’s the only dream you can have-to come out number-one man. He fought it out here, and this is where I’m gonna win it for him” (106). In the end of the play, Happy cannot see reality, like his father, he is destined to live a fruitless life trying for something that will never happen. After Willy’s death Happy plans to carry on Willy’s unrealistic notions of success, “I’m staying right in this city, and I’m gonna beat this racket! The Loman Brothers!” (105).


After living in the shadow of Biff throughout his childhood, Happy tries to mask his lack of self-confidence by surrounding himself with women and pretending that everything is okay. Happy is seemingly content and successful, with a steady career and none of the obvious marks of failure than his older brother displays.
