Female genital mutilation is a terrible injustice that happens to innocent women everyday. Female genital mutilation is the cutting, or partial or total removal, of the external female genitalia for cultural, religious, or other non-medical reasons. It is usually performed on girls between the ages of four and ten. However, it can occur at birth, at the time of puberty, when the female marries, or at the time of pregnancy. It is also known as female circumcision, which is the surgical elimination of most of the labia minora and the reduction of the labia majora which produces a raw surface. Infibulation is another term used and it is when the skin and tissue that surrounds the vagina is closed, by sewing it shut and only a tiny hole is left for urine and menstrual blood to flow out of. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Lady Macbeth plays a very influential and controlling character. At the end of the play, Malcolm describes Lady Macbeth as Macbeth’s “fiend-like” or devil-like queen, because of her involvement with Macbeth throughout his betrayal of Scotland. Lady Macbeth’s “fiend-like” qualities are justified in many instances early throughout the play.


Lady Macbeth, since we first meet her in Act 1, Scene 5, was driven by ambition and power. In the beginning, she was the driving force behind Macbeth to murder King Duncan, as she believed Macbeth was morally not capable of committing the act. She believed that Macbeth “art not without ambition, but without the illness that should attend it” (Line 18), and so she dedicated herself to this action, so to gain acclaim and glory for her husband, promised by the witches previously. Her “unsex me” speech portrays her ambition for this goal. In this speech she wants to eliminate her conscience completely, to act out the murder. She wanted to remove all feminine aspects, like compassion, love, and remorse, to “make thick her blood” and to fill her “from crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty” (Line 41) so that she could deceit others and commit the sinful venture. In doing this, she turned from the natural to unnatural, as turning from God to Satan, making her a “fiend-like” queen.


To manipulate her husband into literally committing the murder of King Duncan, she also began to attack his manhood, Macbeth’s evident weakness, shown in Act 1, Scene 7. Without the use of violence, she convinced Macbeth that her ideas and plots would work, and would lead them to power. Although Macbeth did strike back to her hurtful words, she would always retaliate to the defence Macbeth held. For example, when Macbeth said “I dare do all that may become a man; who dares do more, is none” (Line 46) trying to convince her that he should not go through with it, she strikes back telling Macbeth “what beast was’t, then, that made you break this enterprise to me?” (Line 48), questioning that if he were the man he suggests he would not have even suggested the matter in the first place.


Her “fiend-like” qualities were only further expressed in Act , Scene , after Macbeth had killed King Duncan, and was in a state of extreme guilt and confusion. This was evident to Lady Macbeth when she said, “my hands are of your colour, but I shame to wear a heart so white” (Line 64). Macbeth had walked into the courtyard carrying the stained dagger he used to kill King Duncan, and with his hands smeared with blood. He was in such a delusional state (“Methought I heard a voice cry…”-Line 5) that he neglected his bloody hands, and did not completely finish the plan intended by Lady Macbeth, as he did not yet frame the groomsmen for the crime. When Lady Macbeth discovered the plan was not finished, she made it her responsibility to complete the plan to save them both-“I’ll gild the faces of the grooms withal; for it must seem their guilt” (Line 56). She took control of the situation and handled the mishaps, to succeed for her and her husband.

Act , Scene 4, showed another example of Lady Macbeth’s qualities. After the murder of Banquo, Macbeth began to see Banquo’s “ghost” at Banquo’s feast. The Digestion of Larry the Liver Sandwich


Larry, the Liver Sandwich, consists of lettuce, tomato, ketchup, butter, bread, onions, mayonnaise, and of course liver! Unfortunately, Larry is deliciously eaten by a human, and must be digested by the body so that the body can use the substances in the sandwich. The main nutrients found in the materials making up the sandwich are amino acids, found in the tomato and liver, carbohydrates, found in the onions and bread, water, found in the vegetables, lipids/fats, found in the butter and mayonnaise, and vitamins, found in all the vegetables. Dietary fiber is also found in some of the substances such as onions, lettuce, and bread. From the moment a human bites into the sandwich, the digestion process begins.


The food undergoes a form of mechanical digestion, in the mouth. The teeth of the human bite, and break down the food into smaller pieces. This is a form of mechanical digestion. Salivary glands in the mouth produce secretions, through ducts (tiny tubes), that are mixed with the food. The salivary glands in the mouth are called parotid gland, (lies at the sides of the face) sublingual gland (lies beneath the tongue), and submandibular gland (lies beneath the posterior floor of the oral cavity). The saliva contains water and an enzyme called salivary amylase that breaks down the ester bonds between the sugar molecules of large starches into smaller starches or maltose. Parts of the bread, onion and other bits having the presence of starch, would be broken down into smaller starches or maltose. The saliva also dissolves solid food to make it susceptible to the action of later intestinal secretions, and lubricates the mouth and esophagus for the passage of solids. Because the food in the mouth does not remain in the mouth for a long period of time, the food particles are not fully digested.


The tongue, a muscle that rolls food into a swallowable sized ball called a bolus, pushes it to the back of the mouth. When food is swallowed, the soft palate, located in the posterior part of the roof of the mouth, closes off the nasopharynx and the epiglottis covers the glottis, forcing the bolus to pass down the esophagus. The epiglottis prevents the food from entering the trachea. The bolus is moved down the esophagus from the muscle contractions called peristalsis. At the base of the esophagus, the bolus comes across a constriction; the cardiac sphincter closes and opens before the bolus can enter the stomach. The cardiac sphincter prevents the acidic contents of the stomach from backing up into the esophagus. After the partial chemical digestion, occurring in the mouth, and after the food has become bolus and has moved down the esophagus, the food go through mechanical digestion again in the stomach. The stomach has three layers of muscle that churn the food, causing the release of gastrin. Gastrin is a hormone that travels from the walls of the stomach into the blood stream. Gastrin affects the stomach as it moves through the body, causing the release of gastric juice. Gastric juice contains water, HCl, and pepsinogen. The HCl reacts with the pepsinogen to produce pepsin, an enzyme that digests proteins. The HCl kills bacteria and also provides the pepsin with an optimum pH of .5 to function in. Because the stomach has acidic juices, it contains a thick layer of mucous to protect the walls of the stomach. Under the influence of the acidic environment of the stomach, the bolus turns into a thick, soupy liquid called chyme. The chyme then moves through the pyloric sphincter, which repeatedly opens and closes, allowing chyme to enter the duodenum, the first section of the small intestine, in small squirts only. The most extensive part of digestion occurs in the small intestine; here most food products are further hydrolyzed and absorbed. The duodenum is specialized by the presence of chemoreceptors, chemical sensitive nerve endings that are able to detect the different biochemicals in the food material. The presence of the acid chyme triggers the release of secretin from the duodenum. Secretin is a hormone that moves through the blood (it is endocrine because it moves through the blood) to the pancreas where it causes the release of pancreatic juice. Pancreatic juice moves through pancreatic duct, and consists of sodium bicarbonate, water, and the four enzymes pancreatic amylase, trypsin, nuclease and lipase. The sodium bicarbonate turns the acid chyme basic with a pH of approximately 8.5. The sodium bicarbonate has a great function in that the materials present in the small intestine are able to operate at its optimum pH. The water functions in hydrolysis, the trypsin breaks protein into peptides, the pancreatic amylase, which has similar function as the salivary amylase different location, nuclease breaks down DNA into nucleotides, and the lipase breaks fats into fatty acids and glycerol; these processes using specific enzymes are a form of chemical digestion. The presence of lipids in the acid chyme causes the release of a hormone called CCK, cholecystokinin. The CCK affects the gall bladder and the pancreas, causing the release of bile and pancreatic juice. The bile is made in the liver, and stored in the gall bladder and emulsifies fats to create greater surface area for the lipase to turn lipids into fatty acids and glycerol. It is composed of cholesterol, bile salts and pigments from the breakdown of hemoglobin called biliruben and biliverdin.

The fluids with absorbed materials move through the hepatic portal vein to the liver, where it then flows through the hepatic vein to the heart and other body parts.


Materials that cannot be digested and absorbed by the small intestine move into the large intestine, which consists of caecum, the colon, the rectum, and the anal canal. The indigestible materials pass through the ilium to the large intestine through the ileo-caecal sphincter. The caecum, which is also known as a blind pouch, is the first part of the large intestine and has a small projection called the appendix. The large intestine is made up of the ascending colon, transverse colon, and descending colon. The large intestine mainly absorbs water, salt, and vitamins, and store indigestible materials to be excreted. The large intestine also has a sigmoid colon that leads to the rectum. The rectum stores feces, indigestible food that has been converted by bacteria, and opens at the anus where defecation occurs. The dietary fiber gained from the onions and lettuce, help with the process of defecation. Defecation is the releasing of the feces. It is released through the anal sphincter.


When food is brought into the body and digested, the blood glucose level increases. The pancreas secretes the hormones called insulin and glucagon from cells called islets of Langerhans, to regulate the body¡¯s use of glucose. Insulin is secreted into the blood when blood glucose levels are high (after meals). This causes the liver and muscle to store glucose as glycogen energy reserve, stimulate the liver, fat and muscle cells to take up and metabolize glucose, and aid in the build up of fats and proteins, inhibiting its use of energy source. Glucagons is secreted into the blood in response to low blood sugar levels (between meals), to promote the break down of nutrients and increase blood glucose levels. This is an example of negative feedback occurring, where a change in the body is reversed in such a way to return the body to its original condition, to regain homeostasis. The pancreas is an endocrine gland in that it is hormone producing and moves things through the blood, however, the pancreas is also an exocrine gland in that it produces digestive juices that move through ducts and not the blood.


As one can see, for Larry the Liver Sandwich to be digested, a long series of processes must occur. Larry is mechanically and chemically broken down, absorbed, and the non-digestible food material becomes wastes, which are excreted through the anal sphincter. Dave Pelzers A Child Called It is the nonfiction story of Pelzers own life. As the third worst victim of child abuse documented in California, he captures his audience as they realize his torture. The book begins from the end of Pelzers struggle with child abuse. He then back tracks and tells his story. The story is very easy to read because it was developed from a childs viewpoint. But in no way does this detract the quality of the book. If anything the simplicity adds a very endearing quality as you sympathize with Pelzer. Pelzer leaves out few details about the abuse. In one incident of abuse, his mother makes him clean a bathroom (unventilated) with a bucket of ammonia and Clorox. Pelzer writes of this incident, As I breathed in the fumes, I collapsed and began spitting up. My throat felt like it was on fire. Within minutes it was raw.” Besides the actual physical abuse, Pelzer receives a great deal of mental abuse. Children at school call him names and accuse him of thievery. His own brothers denounce their relationship with him. Even his own father does very little to protect him. Pelzer is forced to believe that he is a nothing, no longer a boy, but an it with no worth at all. The book ends rather abruptly, leaving one almost frustrated over what eventually happened to Pelzer and seems unfinished. But a more appropriate ending may be found in the other two sequels of the trilogy, The Lost Boy and A Man Named Dave. This fast paced book leaves me yearning to help a child, especially one like Pelzer. A Child Called It makes me want to hug Pelzer and let him know he is loved.


With his first book, A Child Called It, Dave Pelzer became know throughout the United States as a diligent fighter against child abuse. Dave would go on to write two other books The Lost Boy, and A Man called Dave to complete a trilogy about his abusive childhood and how he survived it. All three books in his trilogy are on the New York Times bestseller lists.

In the movie The Joy Luck Club the director Wayne Wang uses techniques to portray the film to make the themes and issues come across more appealing to the viewer. The three scenes that stood out are the ones where Lindo’s mother is speaking to the matchmaker and mother in law about giving her daughter away to be married at the age of 15, the scene where Ying Ying is in Lena’s apartment also known as the tiger scene and the last scene is Junes reunion with her abandoned twin sisters in China. When Lindo enters the frame she is holding a red kite symbolising prosperity as well as the ability for freedom with no limitations. As Lindo walks in on the meeting her mother is having with the matchmaker and her future mother in law she steps up onto a rock, which creates a sense of power at the same time Lindo shows them that she wont be restricted once being married off. The long shot of the meeting shows no emotion, the way Wayne Wang has seated the three women is reminiscent of a battle as the mother in law and matchmaker are facing the mother as if the mother is unsure with her decision to give Lindo away, the door way in the background of the scene shows there is a new beginning once stepping inside the darkness of the room showing the unknown and mystery with the light showing a sense of direction. There is a medium shot of Lindo and she is fiddling with her kite but at the same time holding on tightly this represents her fear of being restricted of her prosperity and freedom as she throws the kite away in a later frame it shows her understanding of her arranged marriage by the matchmaker when doing this it shows her loss of opportunities as she knows she is trapped.


The tones that are projected from Lindo and her mother is fear of rejection, Lindo’s mother is concerned with Lindo’s acceptance by her future family for the reason that she is openhandedly given Lindo off to be married for a better opportunity at life, and being accepted into the house hold is a big ordeal to a mother as she has promised Lindo would be a good and obedient daughter in law. Lindo’s concern for fear of rejection is somewhat different to that of her mothers because she wants to be accepted only because she has no other option and to be accepted is better than not being accepted at all. Whilst Lindo’s mother is having slight regrets by her facial expressions during a close up of her face she would also be excited for Lindo as she is having the opportunity to live with a wealthy family.


In the scene where Ying Ying is in Lena’s apartment the darkness of the shadows creates a sense of mystery, throughout the scene Ying Ying is talking bout the tiger, Wayne Wang has played with the shadows using the vertical blinds as a shadow on Ying Ying causing her to look like the tiger as she walks over to the bed with her hands grasped together showing she is harmless, whilst walking over to the bed she is accompanied by a panning shot. As Lena enters the room through the door, it is a mystery to the viewer at first, as you cannot see who is at the door but as Lena enters the room there is a sharp close up of her face showing concern for her mother as she is unaware of her mother distress for her marriage to Harold. The wooden pylons in the room symbolise the strength needing to hold up the house, this is like Lena and Harold’s marriage it looks good from the outside but on the inside it doesn’t appear the same, also the lopsidedness of the house is somewhat identical to Lena’s marriage. Throughout the scene there is a lot of medium angle shot of Ying Ying with a lot of shadow positioned on her face and body to perhaps create a sense of mystery or a barrier.

When June and the twins come together there is a high angled shot of the twins and June representing no emotions at this time. Whilst June tells the twins of their mother’s death there is a sharp close up of her face showing sympathy and sorrow, the twins accept June with a hug this frame is shot through a high angled shot after they hug the camera slowly proceeds with tracking out in a slight upward direction.

I cannot escort you. They wouldn’t let me go to the end of the garden-wall.” This information forces Lockwood to change his good opinion about his landlord. To reinforce his negative thoughts, Lockwood is shocked when Heathcliff and Hareton laugh instead of rescuing him when the dogs attack him. Lockwood discovers a pile of diaries in Catherine’s room, dating back nearly half a century. The entries in the diary seem particularly mysterious because the reader does not know the circumstances to which they refer. They, like the rest of the room, are dusty and look like they have not been disturbed for a long time. The idea of an untouched room forms a slightly puzzling feeling, which builds up suspense and the question, ‘why’, which leads to a sense of foreboding.


Lockwood wakes, disturbed from his fitful sleep, by a very violent dream. He dreams about Joseph and the small chapel nearby but the dream does not relate to any of the day’s events, except a similarity to a book title he reads. Lockwood then lays his head back down.


‘I listened doubtingly an instant; detected the disturber, then turned and dozed, and dreamt again; if possible, still more disagreeably than before.’ From this point forward, we are unsure whether Lockwood dreams are in fact, real or not. However, he himself states it was in fact only a dream, This confuses the reader even more, as Heathcliff is adamant that the ghost was not a dream. Bronte does this to show how insecure Heathcliff is about Cathy, and how he can not control his own feelings. Bronte uses him to create a sense of foreboding, by trying to throw the reader off course. They are sure of Heathcliff’s personality, yet find in fact, he is completely the opposite.


Lockwood has a face to face encounter with the ghost who, claims to be Catherine Linton, which causes the reader to think that it may be possible for Lockwood to have dreamt this, and known Catherine’s name, as he’d read her diaries. However, Heathcliff’s reaction tells a different story. He is convinced that it was not a dream and begins to shout and cry out of the window.


“He got onto the bed, and wrenched open the lattice, bursting, as he pulled at it, into an uncontrollable passion of tears. ‘Come in! Come in!’ he sobbed, do come. Oh do � once more! Oh! My hearts darling! hear me this time � Catherine, at last!’”. The reader is almost made to feel pity for him in his anguish, although the cause of his pain is unknown. Bronte does this to show that events in the past have shaped and affected the people living near-by deeply.


It seems likely, however, that Bronte would have intended the ghost to seem real to her readers such a supernatural event would certainly be in keeping with the dark tone in the rest of the novel. The novel would have been identified as a gothic novel, when it first came out. These were designed to both horrify and fascinate readers with scenes of passion and cruelty. Preliminary work we conducted a similar experiment to see how long a liquid would take to go opaque when you varied the concentration of acid, water and sodium. I know that this pre-test will help me because now I know the right amounts of solution, water, hydrochloric acid and sodium sulphate.


To make sure the experiment is fair I will perform the following procedures


• • There was a constant volume in all of liquid in all of the experiments.


• • Completely rinse all of my apparatus. I will do this so I remove all the particles from previous experiments allowing for the right concentration.


• • I will make sure that all the chemicals are measured correctly for accurate results.


• • I will not stir the chemicals at all, and try to move them around as little as possible, this is to prevent any unwanted collisions which may speed up the rate of reaction.


• • I will make sure that the measuring cylinders are not mixed up for the Hydrochloric Acid and Sodium Thiosulphate.


In each of the concentrations done or temperatures the time will be in seconds and will recorded times, this will be done so a mean average can be taken for accuracy in the results. In the group there will be three people watching the solution go cloudy and for the ‘x’ to disappear and the timer will not be stopped until every one had agreed that the ‘x’ had disappeared completely. The flask that the experiment will be done in will be washed out so that the acid and sodium thiosulphate has all gone so the result will not be affected thus making it less accurate. We will take great care when measuring the solution in the meniscus.


In this experiment I will be using a stop clock, measuring cylinder, graduated pipettes and test tubes, conical flask, and a piece of paper with an ‘x’ on it.


The apparatuses we have used were 4 beakers, sodium solution, hydrochloric acid, water, measuring cylinders, and a ruler.


Safety Goggles will be worn at all time because strong acid is being used and no running at any time


First I will measure the right amount of both Sodium Theo sulphate and hydrochloric acid then I will add Sodium Theo sulphate to conical flask if I need to heat to the right temperature. Then I will put the flask down on the cross then I will add hydrochloric acid and begin to time. I will measure at least results from room temperature. I will do this twice this also makes my result more accurate... There is also the problem on when to measure the temperature at the start of it, I have decided to plot rough graphs to make sure that the results fit a line then I can repeat those which don’t look right. I intend to improve the accuracy of my result by doing each test times to find out the average and then I added it to the nearest second to round it up.


There are different methods that I can use to carry this experiment such as light source method using transmitter and light source detector, this method is much easier to use because eye difficulties to see cross disappearing. Light source still can see how much percentage is left even 1% of light is still visible.


Prediction


I think that as I increase the concentration of sodium thiosulphate, provided that no other variables affect the results, the rate of reaction will also increase. I believe that this will happen because of the way in which the two chemicals react. When the sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid are placed together in the conical flask, their respective molecules get mixed together, moving freely. When molecules from each chemical collide, they react, forming new compounds. The concentration will increase the rate of reaction because if the concentration is higher, then there will be more molecules of sodium thiosulphate in a given volume, and so it is reasonable to say that it greatly increases the chances of one of those molecules colliding with the hydrochloric acid molecules.


This means That more of the molecules will be colliding and reacting within a given time, and so the rate of the reaction has speeded up this can be justified by relating to the collision theory.


Obtaining


While working all safety procedures were followed very carefully like the use of safety goggles and putting the bags under the table. The measurements I feel were fairly accurate as the results were what was expected. There was some anomalous result, however, which was repeated to get a more accurate result. We repeated the experiment three times so we could find averages and get more accurate results. The results were measured to the nearest centimetre cubed because this was the maximum accuracy of the cylinders. The results show the results we got for each experiment. I did two different graphs showing my results 1 showing the amount of water and the time taken and other showing the concentration and the time taken.

Analysing


All results have now been obtained and they seem to be quite good, all showing correlation as expected at the start, repetitions were managed for each test and averages were worked out from those figures.


From my results I can clearly see that they agree with my prediction, the faster the reaction the higher the concentration


My predictions have been accordingly close to reality. When the concentration of the sodium thiosulphate has gone up, as the first part of the experiment shows, the rate of reaction goes up as well. This is what was expected and therefore makes it highly unlikely that there have been any major errors, although all results are obviously not been perfect.


In this experiment I have found that as the temperature and concentration is increased the time taken for the reaction to take place decreases. This means that the rate of reaction increases as it takes less time for a reaction to take place, so more particles collide together as a higher surface area is provided per second.


Evaluation


I think that my observations and measurements were very good because I had a lot of pre experiment preparation including the preliminary time I was given so that I could practice my experiment. From this time I had been given to practice, I made sure before the real experiment that I had prepared everything properly so that on the day I wouldn’t have to worry about things, if I was doing them correctly, and because of the previous experience I knew what to look out for as well.


I think overall my experiment was accurate even though there were probably some human errors but I know that improvements can be made for example at the beginning there were controversies when the room temperature wasn’t the appropriate and the water that we used was hot and it obviously would affect the rate of reaction, however, luckily it did not affect much the concentration. Apart from that there were not any other inconvenient.


Now at the end of my experiment I can confirm that the point I made at the beginning about the factors that may affect the rate of a reaction is true, the increasing of concentration, surface area, temperature, adding catalysts will positively concern in the rate of a reaction.


All the procedures that I used worked fine and I am gratify with the work done, my method endorsed me to get the appropriate precise result needed to sustain my hypothesis.


In order to improve the experiment I would make sure the right amount of hydrochloric acid or probably sodium thiosulphate is measured accurately, this could be some of the reasons why there are some uncharacteristic results in the graph, but I am sure that it can be enhanced.

In act two of this play, the reader learns of a quarrel between the king of the fairies, Oberon, and his queen, Titania. We later see the development of this quarrel into a dispute which the king is intent on resolving along with that of two passing mortals whose conversation we happen to overhear. Through the scene, we see Oberon’s character develop into a fairly well -rounded personality, and we see the set up for the main plot of the entire play. Oberon wishes to drop love blossom juice into Titania’s eyes so that he can gain back his wife’s affections. In the beginning of this act, we see that Oberon is jealous that Titania’s attention and time has been spent with her new page. By putting the Queen under the spell of this flower, causing her to look the fool, and then relinquishing her from this spell, the king is certain she will concede and “make her render up her page to [him]. (.1.185)” With the beginning of this act, we see Oberon as a jealous creature who feels that because he has control over nature, he should also have control over his wife. Early in the act, at the first entrance of Oberon and Titania, we first see this bitterness emerge. “What jealous Oberon, skip hence. I have foresworn his bed and company. (.1.6)” Says Titania when she first sees Oberon, basically telling him to get out of here. To which Oberon replies “Tarry, rash wanton; am I not thy lord? (1..6)” Oberon’s response here shows his dominant attitude towards Titania, and her initial statement shows she is mad at him, and has no intention of submission to his will. They go on like this for quite awhile, with Titania accusing Her mate of adultery, and Oberon saying the same of her. They continue to argue for many lines until Oberon finally commands her to leave and asks Puck to enter (.1.146 � 154). The dialogue at the beginning shows us the start of this clever subplot and also sets up the comedy that ensues later in the play. Also, it appears Oberon shows a tender side as he takes pity on Helena, perhaps understanding her situation with Demetrius. Helena is in love with this man, who does not return the favor, and given Oberon’s recent trouble gaining Titania’s affections, he seems to want to help. He instructs Puck that after he puts the nectar in Titania’s eyes, he should seek out Dimetrius and “Anoint his eyes / But do it when the next thing he espies / May be the lady. (.1.61 � )” This gesture by Oberon seems to show that he is taking pity on the poor mortal, perhaps to make himself feel better about his current situation with his own Love. This first scene of act two beautifully sets up the plot for the rest of the play. We see the gods begin to interact with the mortals, and see that they are prone to human problems which makes their mistakes later in the play more believable, as gods are usually believed to be infallible. Through the entire scene, Oberon’s character develops from a heartless ruler, to a kinder man intent on fixing not just his own problems, but those of the mortals who are oblivious to his presence.

The Speaker arrives at his house and tells us “I met my father crying.” He also explains his father “had always taken funerals in stride,” but as we can tell with his father’s tears, there had been a great tragedy.


Amidst all this tragedy Heaney adds “the baby cooed and laughed as I rocked him in the pram,” this brings a sense of new beginning. The baby is brought into the poem at a time of great anxiety, and adds life. The “whispers informed strangers I was the eldest,” emphasizes the silence, which has taken over the house, so as even “whispers” can be heard. The mentioning of the “whispers” is key to addressing the uncomfortable feeling present in the house.


The eerie feeling present in “Mid Term Break,” is replaced by celebration in “To An Athlete Dying Young.”

Another favourite part of the novel was when Mother’s brothers and friends gave Mr. Freeman a good going over for hurting Maya and her mother in such an unwanted way i liked the way they made him feel ashamed. Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Benjamin Franklin finished the Declaration of Independence on July fourth, 1776, just two days after America declared it’s independence from Britain. In July, 1777, congress had not thought of celebrating the Independence Day until it had already passed. In order to not let this great day be passed uncelebrated, they celebrated it on the day that the Declaration of Independence was approved and passed out to the new nation. As a result, America has the July fourth holiday.

The Declaration however, did not stimulate an immediate positive reaction from everybody. There was a lot of confusion for a long time about what the Declaration really meant. When blacks started asking for equal rights people argued with them that when the Declaration of Independence stated “all men are created equal” that this did not include blacks. For the most part this was true. Jefferson himself owned slaves during and after the writing of the great Declaration. People argued that equal creation was “a falsehood, and a most pernicious falsehood” and that “the principle, although lovely and beautiful, cannot obliterate those distinctions in society which society itself engenders and gives birth to.” However, a man named Benjamin Franklin Wade was a strong opponent of slavery and persisted otherwise. The “great declaration cost our forefathers too dear” and it was “worth the sacrifice of all else on earth, even life itself”. He also stated that “no man has a right to trample on another” and that all rights be “restored without delay.” Lincoln, who had just served his first term in congress, believed that the Declaration “contemplated the progressive improvement in the condition of all men everywhere.” Lincoln was going to fight for this belief.


Not only did the Declaration of Independence cause a lot of confusion to fresh Americans, but it also paved the way for many great changes that were yet to come. Americans started using the Declaration of Independence to “justify their quest for equality”. Slavery was slowly starting to be abolished in some areas such as in New York and New Jersey, not surprisingly, on July fourth, 17 and 1804 respectively. The end of slavery was getting closer. On September , 186 Lincoln stated in his Emancipation Proclamation that “slaves within any State or designated part of a State the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free”. Lincoln looked toward the Declaration for guidance and believed that the Declaration of Independence was the “father of all moral principles,”. The addition of the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments into the U.S. Constitution by Lincoln’s party provided a guarantee to the protection and rights of black people in America. Blacks now had their freedom. If the Declaration of Independence was never composed these changes certainly would not have come so soon, if at all.


As a whole, the Declaration of Independence has brought many great things upon this country. Through times of war, conflict and through celebration the Declaration has kept us not only sincere to ourselves and to our fellow Americans, but to people all over the world. The Declaration has inscribed in us all, a true sense of morals.
