An Abortion for My Fourteen-Year-Old?

Jacquelyn Garrod

Argument

Abortion should be illegal for any women to obtain, even a fourteen year old. Abortion is murder; it is the killing of an unborn baby. In today’s society, regular people are not allowed to go out and just murder someone for no reason, so why should doctors be allowed to murder unborn babies? The term abortion actually refers to any premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether naturally spontaneous, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced, as in a surgical or chemical abortion. In 17, the Supreme Court handed down its Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions legalizing abortion in all 50 states during all nine months of pregnancy, for any reason, medical, social, or otherwise. (www.nrlc.org). The vast majority of all abortions performed today are done for social, not medical reasons.

Though there is evidence of doctors and midwives performing abortions in the United States as far back as the 1850s, it wasn’t until 17 that As efforts to liberalize abortion laws began to emerge all over the country, individuals concerned about the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in all fifty states. By May 17, thirty state groups had elected representatives to serve on a board of directors, and the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) was formally incorporated on May 14, 17. The first NRLC

Garrod

convention was held in June of 17 and NRLC opened its national office in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 17 with six full time employees.

A baby whether born to my fourteen year old daughter or an adult is a creation from God. Life begins as soon as conception takes place. The Holy Bible states, “Lo, children are a heritage of the Lord and the fruit of the womb is his reward” (Psalm 17). Abortion is cruel and inhumane. Abortion is an easy way out of a problem that has been created from being foolish but only for a moment. An abortion can be seen as putting the unborn child out of misery while he doesn’t have the ability to reason or fear.

“According to teenpregnancy.org, teenagers who have abortions fear that having a baby would dramatically change their lives in a way they are not prepared to accept.” Today’s teenager is a busy one. In many cases, the teenager feels she will have little time to themselves if they have the baby. If only they had taken time to think before having unprotected sex or waited until they were married to have sex.

An unwanted pregnancy for my fourteen-year-old daughter would result in many hardships for both our daughter and us. These are hardships that we would all have to learn to bare and accept. I could only hope that in the years to come when my daughter matured she would appreciate that we did not allow her to have an abortion and to bring a beautiful baby that we would all love into the world.

Abortion is a very cruel and nasty method of easing a person’s burden. The effects to the person having the abortion is serious, but what about the people that love them? God created these babies, how does anyone have the right to make the decision to terminate a life for Him. Just because a newborn baby cannot speak does not make it right or fair. Just because you cannot see the baby does not mean it is not alive. The

Garrod

freedom to choose has been taken from the child before it even knows it should have the freedom to do so. We all know that God forgives us all our sins, but can we forgive ourselves if we let this happen?

When American and Europe¡¯s economy is in slowdown, the Australian economy is still doing well. However, Tom Skotnicki, in his article ¡°Sars and strife¡± which was in the journal of Business Review Weekly on May 1-7 00, reminds that Australian should be aware of the potential economy crisis and prepare for it because of the external adverse economic condition would bring profound negative influence to Australian business. The author uses many data, evidences and experts¡¯ opinions to support his argument, and analyzes the reasons objectively. Thus, this article is quite worth reading.

In the first part of this article, Skotnicki claims that a possible economic crisis might come and the Australian economy would be overwhelmed at this time without preparation. Although the Australian economy survived from the Asian economic crisis in 17-8 and the global slowdown in 001, it will face more challenges which come from the outside such as menace of Sars, depression in America and Europe, the political problem on the Korean Peninsula and the global instable oil price. Moreover, it becomes a barrier of the Australian exports that the Australian dollar maintains a high exchange rate.

In the other part, Skotnicki quotes several other economists¡¯ opinions who are the experts in this field. All of these economists mention that the economy of US and Europe will recover more slowly. Peter Drysdale, the professor of economics at the Australia National University, Saul Eslake, the chief economist of ANZ Banking Group and the Credit Suisse Asset Management economist Barry Hughes believe that Sars has clogged the world economy and would influence the whole world for a long time. Mark Vaile, the Trade Minister, focuses on the loss of export competitiveness because of the high exchange rate of Australian dollar. However, he argues that the problem of exports could be coped by exporters as long as the rate does not increase to US75cents. Among these four economists, there is only Eslake who suggests that Australian economy will improve in several years.

At the beginning of this article, Skotnicki states that the adverse economic conditions are including the fear of Sars, slow development of United Stated, less competitiveness of export, political problems of Korea and pressure of oil price. However, he has just analyzed the first three and do not mention the last two in the article. Moreover, the structure of the whole article is a little confusing. The author do not arrange the materials in a certain order, thus it is a little hard to read.

Although there are two negative points in this article, it is still worth reading. Initially, this topic is a quite controversial and complex argument. It just happens in the future, and what people could do is only making hypothesis based on information of many fields. The author reminds people to pay attention to the future of Australian economy, and analyzes the reason, which might obstruct the development of economy accurately and comprehensively. It also shows that Skotnicki is a sensitive person and has a wide range of knowledge in many fields.

Next, when Skotnicki explains the reasons, he uses many relevant examples and statistics to support his opinion, which are carefully collected. In addition, he not only just lists the evidence or data, but also interprets them. For example, he cites the definition of GDP in order to analyze the speed of economy development of US and Europe, which it enables readers to understand directly. Moreover, he also provides many details in this article, which enhance the deep understanding. He also quotes several professional economists¡¯ opinions who are the experts in these fields to strengthen his own statement.

Following that, the author presents his arguments objectively and cautiously the language of this article is objective and cautious. As a business article, the author does not use the motive language to make the readers believe something but uses the facts and statistics to present the realities. Moreover, Skotnicki has stated not only his own ideas, but also the opposite situation. He even does like this when he quotes the experts¡¯ opinions Although Eslake worry about the influence of Sars and slow development speed of American and European economy, he suggests that Australian economy will make improvement after a few years. Meanwhile, Skotnicki analyzes some questions with the facts and data directly, and inductive the answers. People could understand the circumstances of the economy as soon as they compare the statistics of GDP, and obtain the answers by themselves. It makes the article reasonable and logical.

In short, this article is extreme professional and objective since the author induces his argument from many relevant facts and data and supports his argument by several experts¡¯ opinions, which makes the article reasonably and reliably. Therefore, the readers can obtain an objective and comprehensive picture of Australian economic trend.

INTRODUCTION

· AUSTRALIAN ECONOMY

There have been significant changes to Australias place in the world economy since 100. From a marked dependence on the United Kingdom for `men, money, and markets down to the 150s, where the `lucky country evolved into a key player in the emerging Asia-Pacific group of dynamic economies by the 180s. Yet such shifts obscure the fundamental continuities, which have characterised Australian development ever since European settlement began. Australia’s place in the global economy is primarily one of an exporter of primary produce and a heavy borrower.

Australia has always been at the mercy of external elements over which it has little apparent control. Long before the concept of globalisation acquired its modern currency, Australias dependence on the outside world made it prone to recurrent economic crises because of a periodic inability to earn export surpluses to pay for capital inflows. It is for this reason that the extent to which external, rather than domestic, forces have shaped the growth of the Australian economy is very evident. This is not to say the peculiar domestic forces have also helped to drive the Australian economy. For much of the twentieth century most Australians lived in a high-income economy with a large service sector, an unusually rapid rate of population growth, and a well-entrenched system of protectionism. Collectively, Australian’s have shown a high propensity to consume, a marked liking for leisure, and a strong preference for owner-occupation and suburban living. Alongside an optimistic belief that, in the long run, `shell be right lay an assumption that ad hoc government intervention would somehow sort out any short-term problems.

· HONG KONG

By contrast, Hong Kong, as one of the last remaining colonial outposts, retained a number of similarities with European or British methods of operating, controlling and reporting, to maintain their economic position in the global market place.

As in many fields of study, an understanding of international accounting differences is aided by an examination of evolution. The systems of law and commerce in Australia and Hong Kong all derive historically from the UK. Not surprisingly, therefore, the British accounting system was similarly exported and still feels at home in these environments.

In both economies, there are loose regulatory frameworks provided by Companies Acts. These are supplemented by more detailed accounting standards promulgated by committees dominated by accountants. Tax rules are different from accounting rules for certain items (eg. depreciation), which gives rise to deferred tax. For most issues, tax rules follow accounting rules.

A further connected feature is the nature of the financial system. On the whole, one could say that Australia and Hong Kong have a system based on capital markets. There are large numbers of listed companies with widespread shareholdings. By contrast, Japan and Korea (and Germany and Italy) have credit-based financial systems with heavy involvement by governments or financial institutions. It follows that, published financial reporting and external auditors are much more relevant in a capital market system because there are large numbers of external investors to report to.

Gross Domestic Product

The figures above suggest that Australia has entered a prolonged period of growth that will continue well into the next decade, and could even surpass the golden age of the 150s. In those days, Australia still ``rode on the sheeps back, with agriculture, especially wool, accounting for much of its prosperity. The biggest change in the 10s has been a surge in manufactured goods and services which together now contribute twice as much to exports as farming does Australia is seeing the benefits of structural changes over the past 15 years that have made its economy more resilient. The changes started with the former Labor government, which took the crucial decision in 18 to float the Australian dollar. It dismantled many of the tariffs that had for decades protected inefficient Australian industries from foreign competition, deregulated the financial system and started to privatise transport, communications and utilities.

On the down side, the Hong Kong economy contracted by 4% during the first half of 18, the stock market crashed to a 5- year-low, and the unemployment level reached a 15-year high, as the region suffered from the financial crisis that had engulfed south east Asia since 17. This situation was exacerbated as GDP fell by 5% during 18, as the region endured its worst ever economic recession and unemployment rose to above 5% - an unheard of figure in the days under British control.

However, once the Asian crisis passed by, the resilience of Hong Kong’s economy meant it was quick to recover. Based upon Hong Kong’s huge financial reserves and its pivotal financial position in the world economy and because of the pre-eminent position the Hong Kong Stock exchange has in world financial markets.

EXCHANGE RATE

· HONG KONG

The attacks on the Thai baht and other Southeast Asian currencies in 17

barely touched Hong Kong. With a huge fiscal reserve of well over HK$00

billion, a huge foreign exchange reserve of U.S.$8.6 billion, and a budget

surplus for most of the last thirty years, Hong Kong is well positioned to

withstand speculative attacks on its currency. And indeed the Hong Kong dollar

remained strong, relative to the official link rate of HK$7.8 to the U.S.

dollar, when practically all ASEAN currencies depreciated against the U.S.

dollar. But a large foreign exchange reserve must be complemented with strong

fundamentals if a currency is to free itself from speculative attacks. The

management of the Hong Kong economy now needs more caution, vision, and

understanding than ever before. In particular, Hong Kongs ability to complete

in international markets is expected to be severely tested in the next ten

years, and the recent attacks on Southeast Asian currencies are forcing Hong

Kong to face those issues sooner than it otherwise might have.

Yet Hong Kong is not without its worries. Hong Kong’s

attractiveness to investors has been declining recent years. There are two

reasons behind these developments. Hong Kong may have been subject to influences that reduced its attractiveness in absolute terms, as other countries may have improved their absolute attractiveness, so that Hong Kong is losing out

in relative terms to these countries.

For example, inflation and the relative appreciation of the Hong Kong dollar against competitor currencies have raised labour and land costs. Global improvements in transportation and communication have made formerly

unfavourable locations less of a drawback. And changes in the government

policies of Hong Kongs competitors may also have increased their attractiveness.

Given that the, under the current “one country, two systems” framework, the Hong Kong dollar will remain distinct from the RMB, there remains the further question of whether the current, linked exchange system,

which provides a direct link to the U.S. dollar at a fixed, official link rate

of HK$7.8 to the U.S. dollar, is best for Hong Kong.

To be fair, the linked exchange rate system has contributed a great deal to

public confidence in the future of Hong Kong during the time leading up to 17.

· AUSTRALIA

While, in Australia’s case, the volatility of the dollar, accompanied with generally downward movements against the major global currencies has, in recent years, assisted in providing Australia with some protection against falls in the global economy. This resilience in the economy was achieved as a result of the improved standing Australia’s exports have in the global economy from the weakening Australian dollar, thereby increasing the flow of foreign capital into the country as the export accounts are settled.

MONETARY POLICY

· HONG KONG

One key concern of some observers such as the World Economic Forum is whether the one country, two systems framework, which is the platform under which mainland China has decreed Hong Kong will be permitted to trade, is viable, given that it implies the circulation of two distinct currencies in one country. The monetary policies attached to this framework are linked to China and are built upon a number of key principles, which include -

· that China for to be prosperous Hong Kong is to be prosperous itself;

· that Hong Kong needs an independent monetary policy in order to maintain its attractiveness to investors

· that China needs an independent monetary policy to maintain the

macroeconomic stability necessary for its own prosperity

Hong Kong is Chinas predominant source of inward foreign capital, and therefore facilitates the flow of foreign capital into China as an intermediary.

It has made the world more accessible to China, whether as a supplier or

as a market. To continue to do so, Hong Kong needs to retain its position as a

world-class financial centre. Therefore, it must not have any foreign exchange control; the Hong Kong dollar has to have 100 percent, unconditional convertibility.

· AUSTRALIA

The Australian government, through the Reserve Bank (RBA), has a policy of controlling inflation and monetary supply through the use of interest rates. The guidelines under which the RBA operates have been set to ensure that monetary policy controls the direction of the economy. This is achieved by adjusting the flow of available money by manipulating the interest rate levers to make money more or less attractive or affordable. If inflation is trending upwards, lever is pulled, interest rates rise, and in the medium term, inflation comes down. Alternatively, the interest rate lever is released in the event of low inflation, which is generally accompanied by low investment.

INFLATION CPI

As discussed throughout this report, the graph above highlights that the Australian economy has negotiated the economic crises in the past 5 years in a positive manner. On the other hand there has been obvious problems in the Asian economies such as the collapse in Thailand, the property bubble burst in Hong Kong and Japan, and these have had detrimental effects upon Hong Kong’s performance.

A consistent inflation performance allows business to confidently predict where their investments are best placed, or what results they can expect of their business strategies. The uncertainty of Hong Kong’s inflation figure, while there have been some negative numbers, does not engender the confidence that businesses are looking for in their investments.

Additionally, a government that allows inflation to rise to very high levels is usually ineffective in many respects; so determining whether high rates of inflation are a cause of poor economic performance or a symptom of other problems that impinge on economic activity can be difficult. Nevertheless, numerous researchers have documented a link between high rates of inflation and poor economic outcomes. The picture is less clear at more moderate rates of inflation (Bruno 15) but plausible arguments can be advanced that even relatively low rates of inflation distort economic decision-making. Thus, monetary policymakers commonly justify their concern with restraining inflation in terms of the beneficial impact on economic output over the long term. They also point to the role of low inflation expectations and enhanced central bank credibility in strengthening the policymakers hand.

Evidence that cost inflation is hurting Hong Kong is best drawn from recent

hotel occupancy rates. Hotels occupancy rates were estimated to be still 8 to percent. (Source Hong Kong Tourism Industry)

THE FUTURE

One option that may be worth considering, is to merge the RMB with the HK dollar. This means either that China has to give up that independence or that Hong Kongs monetary environment has to be dictated by developments in the rest of China. For those reasons, any speculation that the HK dollar would merge with the RMB in the short medium term (10 0 years) is unwarranted.

Beyond that, depending upon China’s performance in the global economy, which, in turn is dependent on a number of important factors -

· The price it pays for it’s labour;

· The sustainability of its economic growth through capital investment in new projects;

· Its human rights record;

· losses in the state enterprise and bad loans in state banks

Then in fifty years, the likelihood of a merge would be greater, but it would still require that the RMB itself be 100 percent convertible and that China cleans up its

fiscal problems.

Australia’s economic growth is all the more remarkable given that Australia is still following the export formula that worked so well a century ago close to two-thirds of Australias exports are still rural and mineral commodities. This is a risky strategy. More export revenue is now to be made in services (such as banking, insurance, tourism and education). The world needed what Australia exported in 101; that is not necessarily the case today. As societies get richer, their proportion of expenditure on, for example, food stuffs declines (there is a limit, say, to the amount of bread that a person can eat) and instead their tastes run to services (such as overseas travel).

American economist Paul Krugman, writing in Fortune magazine in December 18, called Australia the miracle economy of the worlds financial crisis. Its rate of economic growth (about five per cent) was one of the best performances in the industrialised world. Australia has now had eight years of uninterrupted economic growth - the longest period of growth in its history.

Additionally, international commodity prices are very low and Australias two and a half decades of economic rationalism, culminating in the General Agreement on Tariff’s & Trade (GATT) has reduced the protectionism still enjoyed by its competitors. For example, Australia could export coal to Germany (the Australian is a better quality than German coal) at a lower price (even including shipping costs) than the current cost of German coal. But the German Government prefers to subsidise each miner on the basis that it is better to subsidise the miners than have them sit around all day on unemployment benefits.

Furthermore, Australia is a country of almost 1 million people, with an economy about the size of South Korea or the Netherlands. It represents less than two per cent of the gross global product. It is vulnerable to international economic fluctuations. The Australian dollar is the sixth most traded currency in the world by currency speculators. Despite these limitations, the Australian economy, according to the statistics, is doing well.

Meanwhile, China has recently been admitted to the World Trade Organisation,

Which will result in reducing its tariffs rapidly and liberalising its dealings with foreign investors. Already some foreign banks, for example, have been allowed to conduct business in RMB deposits and lending.

It is with such a China that Hong Kong has reunified. If the communist state

stands for a rigid bureaucracy and a command economy, then Hong Kong has

not reunified with a communist state. To be accurate, China has become a mixed

economy and is due to become largely a market economy, if not within a

generation, certainly within the fifty years of one country, two systems

promised by the Basic Law. The assertion, commonly found in the Western media, that Hong Kong has reverted to Communist China is actually inaccurate and misleading.

The reversion of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty has benefited both Hong

Kong and China economically. Hong Kong benefits because reunification with

China greatly enhances Hong Kongs locational advantage.

The economic miracle of Hong Kong is legendary, but the one now taking

place on the mainland is even more striking. The challenges facing Hong Kong are not small, but the reunion with China has greatly assisted Hong Kong in meeting them.

Change is an ongoing part of life, everything and everyone changes. In David Williamson’s play Money and Friends we see change in the main character of Peter. Peter’s change can be seen in his decision to be honest and later vindictive as well as his change of thoughts about his friends and friendships. These changes also have some important and positive effects on the other characters in the play, such as Penny, Alex, Vicki, Margaret and Conrad.

One technique that Williamson uses in his play to show Peter’s change is through the narrator. He uses the character Margaret as the narrator in the play. She introduces the play and the other characters and also ends it. Margaret has discussions with the audience, which keeps the play moving and keeps everyone up to date with what is happening both on and off the stage. At the beginning of the play Margaret describes her friends, and for Peter she says that he is considerate, peacemaker, gentle, and a listener to all of his friends problems. He agrees with what everyone says even if he doesn’t.

As the play continued, Peter’s personality can been seen differently as he makes his decision to be honest with his friends and tells them what he really thinks, not what he used to do in the past. By the end of the play, it is learnt that Peter now likes to have his say, and doesn’t worry as much about the consequences of his actions. He tells people his honest thoughts when they ask for his opinion. Peter has gained strength from his change.

Another technique that Williamson uses in the play is dramatic irony. Williamson uses a number of instances of dramatic irony throughout the play. These include Peter being able to help other people but not being able to help himself from severe money troubles. Also the married couples are not friends but the non-married people are, such as Peter, Penny, and Margaret. But later in the play, Peter is strong and his friends help him with his money troubles (however only to make themselves look good) and he wins in the end.

Write your Everything and everyone changes research paper

Dramatic irony also brings change to Peter. Honesty brought change to Peter’s and his friend’s lives. Peter had his money troubles but didn’t want to go to his friends for help, like his friends go to him for help. Margaret ends up telling their friends and they give the money to him, only because Peter made them guilty by confronting them about their wealth and greed.

Williamson also uses the technique of music throughout his play to set the scene and create the mood. It also reinforces the main idea of the scene. An example of this is the use of Chicago’s It’s hard to say Im sorry when Alex and Vicki are apologising to Peter. This technique helps the reader to understand the scene and how the character would be feeling. It also helps Williamson to strengthen his message about friendships.

Peter’s change also brought change to his friends. An example of this is Conrad and his attitude towards Justin. At first Conrad had nothing to do with Justin, then established a relationship and friendship with him and paid for his university. This happened because Peter told Conrad how he really felt about his relationship with his son. Another example is Alex and Vicki. Peter being honest to them ended up helping their marriage, even though they were upset and angry with him first. They were more honest with each other, and also changed their ideas about themselves as parents. This happened because Peter told each of them how he felt about their relationship. All of these examples show how Peter’s change brought change to his friends.

In conclusion, Peter’s change in personality because of his decision to be honest has changed himself as a person and has also changed his friend’s lives. David Williamson used many techniques in his play to show this change through, the narrator, dramatic irony, and music. Peter was then able to be more open with his thoughts and confident with his actions. His friends changed because of his honesty.

Confirmation

NEED TO CHANGE THE WORDS AROUNUD!

In confirmation it is right to consider the sign of anointing. It signifies and imprints “a spiritual seal.” Anointing is rich in meaning. Oil is a sign of abundance and joy. It cleanses, and limbers, it is a sign of healing, since it is soothing to bruises and wounds. It is radiant in beauty, health, and strength. Anointing with oil has all these meanings in the sacramental life. Anointing with the oil of catechumens signifies cleansing and strengthening. Confirmation can only happen to people who have been baptized. The post- baptismal anointing with sacred chrism in Confirmation and ordination is the sign of consecration. By Confirmation, Christians who are anointed, share more completely in the mission of Jesus Christ and the fullness of the Holy Spirit in which he is filled, so that their lives may give off the aroma of Christ. There are two signs usually associated with the sacrament of Confirmation, they are the laying on of hands and the anointing with chrism. When oil is smeared on a person, that is a physical appearance that “You are the Anointed.” When the Christian is anointed with chrism, the church proclaims “You are the Christ”, since Christ is the Greek word for anointed. St Augustine speaks of the anointing of the whole Christ, the body together with the Head. It is a declaration not of replacing Christ but of reigning together with him, the Head of the Church, as his body. This declaration, “You are Anointed” is the core meaning of being anointed. Confirmation is an increase of sanctifying grace, which makes the person being confirmed a “perfect Christian.”

In the early church, when usually adults were only baptized, Confirmation was done right after baptism. Confirmation was usually at the age around fourteen, and is still usually around that age.

Today’s Society

Have you ever thought that there is more to human life then that of what one is taught? Or that there is a make-believe world that one has yet to discovered? There is a possibility that there is another world. Truman, Neo, and the Giver are astonishing characters that are able to show that there is more beyond the human world, as we know it. Showing that there is a second world, proving that the bible is reality, and being able to see past the human eye are all ways that there is more to human life.

One would think that there was only one world, but in Truman’s, Neo’s, and the Givers case there are two. As the whole world watches every time Truman makes the slightest move, people understand that his entire life has been an unending soap opera for the consumption of the rest of the world. Looking into Neo’s life, he displays a characteristic of not wanting to accept the unbelievable, for instance, another world. Neo knew about the “second world”, but did not want too accept the idea. At first, when he got into the “second world”, he did not want any part of it. Truman on the other hand, had no idea that there was another world going on around him. His life was make-believe. When Truman finally found out that there was a second world, he wanted to end it. The Giver, once again is another story. The Giver’s primary role was to transmit the worlds memories to other characters making the so-called “second world”. These characters are to then make another world just like everyone else’s. This way there is not a second world and everyone is now alike.

The bible also has an important role in reality. When the bible comes into play, all three characters have that special role. Basically, Truman is being more famous in the Bible in a disturbing look at what today’s life or anyone’s life could be like, simply because no one doesn’t know if were being watched by millions or just one (That one being God), because society accepts the reality in which every person exist and no one can possibly know, and if anyone could, would everyone want too? As Neo, he is an anagram for One. The Wachowski’s named Neo’s alter ego, Thomas, after the biblical Doubting Thomas. As these characters play different roles, they all seem to compare back to the bible where it makes reality too hard to see. If people can see past little “r” and believe in God, then how come no one as humans can notice other worlds that could be happening. The Giver alone bears the burden of the worlds memories. He has the power of God if anyone would like to say. That’s how the Giver has his role in the Bible.

Custom Essays on compare contrast

As the little “r” and big “R” have an important role there meaning and expressions are never ending. The meaning of “r” and “R” are mostly about reality. When Truman makes a magnificent entrance in The Truman Show, he is only seeing what he wants to see. What he sees his life as is a big gigantic world with everyone else. In reality he is just in a full-size dome filled with actors. Neo on the other hand was seeing past the little “r” and going straight for the bigger “R”. He knew there was a Matrix and just needed to understand where it was. All that matters was that there was another world that he knew about. Unlike todays society no one else can look past that little “r” and move onto the big “R”. It seems that no one can move on to bigger and better things like the Giver was able too. Since the Giver controlled what everyone in the town thought, he then had that control over every citizen in every case.

Since reality is playing a big role in understanding what the world might be coming too, some people might have a better understanding. All three characters contributed a better meaning to why people can’t see through the human eye and also why today’s society is more of a little “r” then a big “R”. Toward the end of the movies and the book, each character had a better meaning of what could happen to their worlds. After each world changed, every character knew that it could happen and that they would tell others for the future. Hopefully in the near future, today’s society will have a better understanding of what goes on and understand that anything could happen when you look past the human eye.

Jews in business; it has always been argued by some, that for such a small minority, Jewish business leaders are overwhelmingly prevalent. Though Jews make up only % of the US population, they account for 45% of fortune top 40 fortune 500 Americans. In many different high profile careers such as, professors, Lawyers, Doctors, Politicians, and sports franchise owners to name a few, Jews are very well represented.

To some this seems to show Jews as a much larger part of the population, this is not so. Except for the New York City metropolitan area, Miami, and California, Jews are not found very much. Now it just so happens these are top business regions in the country, therefore opportunities abound. Throughout the history of Jewish civilization, things have not been easy for these people. There has always been someone, or some group who has wished to eradicate, or stem any gain they make.

A strong work ethic, determination, and desire for material goods have grown from this history. The Jewish religion, as opposed more to the Christian religion, teaches that money is good. It is not dishonorable to seek wealth for himself, and family, long as these riches are acquired through moral means. When compared to the rest of the population Jews are generally more educated, wealthier, and are less likely to commit a felony. The US prison population is less than 1% Jewish.

It is as if Jewish children are raised to succeed, value of hard work, and sacrifice are presented to them by family members. Many of today’ Jewish citizens are second, and third generation Americans, so they are not that far removed from their grandparent’s tenement and sweatshop work. From an early age, torah study preaches hard work. Hebrew school students and those who attend yeshiva must make a tremendous commitment to not only secular studies, but also the studies of religion, and language. You are taught to work hard, for in the future it will pay off with Money, and prosperity.

Those who are bar-mitzvah at 1, are considered a man under Jewish tradition, and

Religion. Now at the age of 1 you may wonder, how can you be a man already? You live at home, and are not self sufficient yet. In this case, it is more about starting to take responsibility for your action, as high school success will turn into a good college, etc. As a child, there are no shortage of role models from the community, media, the arts, and family members to aspire to. This shows a child what hard work can accomplish.

There has been much research done on Jewish people, and why they posses much economic prowess. In 14 the Bell curve was released, and it claimed more of the high IQ readings were due to genetics. This was not scientifically proven, and only served to alienate Jews, and receive scorn from non-Jews. People must also understand, that hatred of Jews is still alive, and unfortunately does not appear to be subsiding as much as we would like. This is why success can always be tainted by the bigoted, short sited views of others. We tend to develop a think skin from circumstances like this; it can serve well in later business dealings

Merlin the Legend

The tale of Merlin the magician began many centuries ago, but his remarkable story is

still being told to this date. The legend begins with a child being born the illegitimate son

of a royal princess; his father was said to be an evil soul and was blamed for the baby’s

birth. The infant was named Emrys, which means hawk or man of the sea, but was later

renamed Merlin. Merlin inherited many powers from his father, most of which were said

to have been evil, and because of this he was baptized at an early age as an attempt to rid

him of any evil he might posses. He lost most of the powers and was left with only two,

that of prophecy and making miracles. Merlin, according to legend, was said to have been

responsible for transporting the stones of Stonehenge from Ireland to England to act as a

monument to those that had died during the battles with the Saxons, and because the

stones possessed great powers of healing.

Throughout the course of time, Merlin saved his life many times as well as the lives of

others through his magical powers. After the birth of King Arthur, Merlin became his

tutor and guardian while he grew up with his foster father Sir Ector, and foster brother Sir

Kay. Merlin was with Arthur when he pulled the Sword from the stone, and also when

Arthur ascended into the throne and was crowned King, and he soon became Arthur’s

royal advisor and the official guardian of Britain. Merlin was the creator of the Round

Table, and was involved in aiding and directing the events of the king and kingdom of

Camelot. Merlin is described as being lean in stature, tall with a long white beard, in

modern day films he is more commonly pictured with a cape and a magic wand. During

his time with King Arthur, Merlin also persuaded The Lady of the Lake to give Arthur

the magical sword Excallibur, which was with him through every battle, even till his last.

Merlin fell in love with the Lady of the lake, and she used a severe form of trickery in

order to obtain his magical powers.

Merlin willingly taught her all that he knew, and soon she became so powerful that not

even Merlin himself could stop her. She locked him up in a glass tower to prevent him

from taking away her powers, and this is believed to be what finally drove Merlin mad.

When and exactly how he died is still unknown, but wherever he is he will always be

remembered for all that he did to unite the land and people of his time. Merlin the man

may have passed on, but his legend never will.

The movie “The Wall” by Pink Floyd is a movie full of interpretation and analyze. The one hour and thirty five-minute movie, based on the album “The Wall”, is about a striving musician named Pink who life was full of devastation and horror. The entire movie is based on the flashbacks Pink has of his past as a child and his recent past experiences. As the movie prevails Pink becomes extremely insane because of his past and it ruins his life completely.

In one of the opening scene of the movie a maid is cleaning the floor of a hotel when she goes to clean Pinks room she realizes it is locked, she unlocks the door but when she tries to open the door the chain stops it setting Pink into a flashback frenzy. When Pink heres the chain hitting the door the movie goes into a flashback of Pink seeing the kids locked up on their way to a concentration camp, while this flashback is occurring the song “In the Flesh?” begins to play and flashes f war come over the screen. As the flashes of war become more clearer you begin to see dead soldiers laying on the ground, as you are seeing this the lyric in the song “and it only killed a few hundred ordinary lives.” meaning that the war was successful and that the country just lost some “ordinary people no one important. This in my opinion is so true in today’s era of the war on terrorism, for example on the news during the recent war the media said that the

Order Custom Essay on pink floyds the wall

united states and Allie force only lost 400 people, four hundred people whose families are without a loved one.

As the movie plays on Pink begins to have flashbacks of his childhood, the flashback is once again about the war but more in detail about how his father dies. The next scene is a woman a sleep, Pinks mother, and a baby in a carriage crying then all of a sudden just a quick shot of a man lying dead in a pool of his own blood, Pinks father. The melody “Thin Ice” begins to play as the picture fades away and as the picture is almost gone the phrase “The sky may look blue but it isn’t” signifying that even though things seemed good at home with his mother and the sky was blue, but his father was dead and soon everything would be so good as time progressed.

As the movie progresses it flashes to the present time and Pink is laying in a pool calm when suddenly flashes of his father appear in his head. Pink then begins to panic and flail his arms the water then turn to a blood red color, which was later explained in the movie when Pink goes nuts in a hotel room and cuts his hand on a piece of glass. The church is the next flash back Pink has, it is of him and his mother, his mother is praying at the altar and a young Pink is walking around. The song Another Brick in The Wall Part I begins to play and the lyrics

purpose that Pink’s mother tells Pink as he gets older that his father is away

across seas but all he really has is the memory in the picture albums. As the song goes on the lyrics “daddy what did you leave for me?” are repeated several times, the next scene shows Pink in a playground playing with another young

child and his father, when the father and son leave Pink grabs the fathers hand. This in my eyes is trying to get the point across that Pink wants to know what his father has done for him he was never their when he needed him because he was dead.

In the movie a teenage Pink comes home and walks into his parents room and goes through his fathers and finds his army uniform. Pink opens a letter it was the notice that his father had died and it was signed with a rubber stamp. This symbolic lyric tries to provide yo with the vision that Pinks father served his country and they sign his death notice with a rubber stamp, referring back to the “ordinary lives” lyrics. As song continues, the lyrics describe how Pinks father was killed “the tigers got loose...soldiers left behind most dead some dying....that’s how they took my daddy from me.”. The tigers in the lyrics are referring to tiger tanks and how they trampled and killed soldiers, and I thought it was ironic how in the first scene they Show Pinks father who was told to stay put even though he requested that him and his platoon be moved out because the

tiger tanks were closing in.

As the film continues an animation of a dove appears that suddenly turns

into a evil hawk that rips a apart of the city away and blood squirts everywhere, clearly referring to the way the government has taken lives out of the community by sending them to war. As the animations goes on the hawk then turns into war plane, Hawk obviously symbolizing the government, then the planes turn into crosses symbolizing the people dying for the government. The last seen in the animation is a picture of the British flag which begins to deprecate and becomes a blood covered cross and the blood is flowing into the gutters, having the same signifgance as the ruber stamp signature. As the animation fades the song “Good by blue sky” is played symbolizing that things seemed good but in reality they aren’t.

The song “Another Brick in The Wall Part II” begins to play as a teacher is yelling at Pink for doing some thing that isn’t except able to him, through the whole school scene the teacher talks down to the student as if he is better then them. As the scene pursues they show the children on a conveyer belt going into a machine and coming out looking the same, this refers the lyric “ you’re just another brick in the wall” meaning that your no one special we are all taught to be the same and not individuals. “We don’t know Education” meaning we don’t need

none of your antics to make us the same we want to be our selves not what you

want us to be. After the children realize this they6 begin to rebel and eventually tear down “the wall”.

In the scene where Pink is calling his girl friend there is a direct reference to suicide that isn’t clear at first but makes sense as the scene plays on. In the beginning of the scene Pink is trying to get in contact with his girlfriend after letting the phone ring for a little while he hangs up and unplugs the phone, lays in bed with the phone cord rapped around his hands and in front of his neck. This startled me at first because it really came out of no where, at this point in the film there was no reference that his girlfriend was sleeping around.

In the movie Pink has a weird relationship with his mother, almost as if his mother babied him to much. In a scene Pink grabs his girlfriend’s shoulder and she turns away and in the previous scene as the song “Mother” plays the lyrics” mothers gonna make all of your nightmares come true, mama gonna put all of her fears into you” a young Pink runs to his mother a cuddles I bed with her, and now when he has the flashback of when his girlfriend turns from him he crawls into a little ball on the bed.

The part of the movie when Pink goes over the edge of insanity is when he is the United States and tries to make a call to his wife and a man picks up. At

this point his mind explodes and he goes completely crazy. The scene were he

really begins to show his insanity is when the “groupie” goes into his room and Pink begins to break everything insight and then later is on the floor making designs out of all the thing he broke. By the end of the movie Pink has completely gone insane and in the long run has lost everything that has ever meant something to him.

The Movie “The Wall” was interesting but a little hard to comprehend and analyze. As my final analyzes of the movie, I believe that Pink is a self portrayal of Roger Waters life and how he would have dealt with his problems. The movie it self had a lot of ironic symbolism which made it interests but it still took me watching it a few times until I was able to completely understand the flashbacks and the way the movie was presented from going from present too past to present.

Roe v. Wade and the History Of Abortion In America

Today, policies regarding legal abortion in the U.S. are being debated everywhere from the halls of Congress to the street corners of our smallest towns. Many myths and misconceptions confuse the issue. A better understanding of the history of abortion in America can help provide a context for making sound policy for the future.

Although the history of abortion in the United States is far older than the 17 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, that decision marked an important turning point in public health policy. It made it possible for women to get safe, legal abortions from well-trained medical practitioners and therefore led to dramatic decreases in pregnancy-related injury and death.

The Roe case arose out of a Texas law that prohibited legal abortion except to save a womans life. At that time, most other states had laws similar to the one in Texas. The effect of those laws was that large numbers of women resorted to illegal abortions that were dangerous because of poorly trained practitioners or unsanitary conditions. Jane Roe, a 1 year-old pregnant woman, represented all women who wanted abortions but could not get them legally and safely because of these laws. Henry Wade was the Texas Attorney General who defended the law that made abortions illegal.

Order Custom Essay on I Need Help on cider rules.

After hearing the case, the Supreme Court ruled that Americans right to privacy included the right of a woman to decide whether to have children, and the right of a woman and her doctor to make that decision without state interference.

The findings in Roe v. Wade

The Court attempted to balance the rights of women who want abortions and the states interest in protecting the health of the woman and the life of the fetus in the following way

In the first third of a pregnancy (about the first 1 weeks), state laws and regulations may not interfere with a womans right to end a pregnancy through abortion. This means that the decision whether or not to have an abortion is left to a woman and her physician.

During the second third of pregnancy (about 14 to 4 weeks), state laws may regulate abortion procedures in order to protect the womans health. This means that women can be assured that clinics which offer abortion services are regulated to ensure that safe medical procedures are followed.

During the last part of pregnancy (after about 4 weeks), and after the fetus is viable (developed enough to survive outside the mothers womb), state laws may prohibit abortion except when it is necessary to preserve the life or health of the woman. Most states (40 states and the District of Columbia) have passed laws to prohibit post-viability abortions under most circumstances. In fact, there are only a few doctors nationwide who offer post-viability abortion care to women who need it to save their life or health.

The aftermath of the Roe v. Wade decision

The reaction to Roe was swift. Supporters of legal abortion rejoiced and generally felt their battle was won. However, others faulted the Court for a decision they viewed as immoral. Those opposed to legal abortion immediately began working at the grassroots and national level to prevent any federal or state funding for abortion and to undermine or limit the effect of the decision. Some turned to measures directly aimed at disrupting the sites where abortions were being performed. Their tactics have included demonstrating in front of abortion clinics, harassing people trying to enter, vandalizing clinic property, and blocking access to the clinics. As time passed, the level of anti-choice violence escalated. Increasingly, clinic bombings, physical attacks, and even murders endanger abortion providers and create a hostile environment for women seeking abortions.

Retreat from Roe v. Wade

Initially, the framework of Roe v. Wade served as the basis by which the constitutionality of state laws related to abortion was determined. In recent years, however, the Supreme Court has begun to allow more restrictions on abortion. For instance, the Supreme Courts ruling in Planned Parenthood v. Casey in 1 established that states can restrict pre-viability abortions, even in the first trimester in ways that are not medically necessary, as long as such restrictions do not place an undue burden on women seeking abortion services. Thus many states now have restrictions in place such as requirements that young pregnant women involve their parents or a judge in their abortion decisions, that mandated waiting periods be observed between the time a woman first visits an abortion provider and when the abortion can be performed, and that scripts with information designed to frighten women and discourage women from having abortions be presented. Only the requirement that a woman involve her spouse in her decision was disallowed.

The Uncertain Future of Roe v. Wade

Right now, womens freedom of choice is hanging by a thread. Today the Supreme Court supports a womans right to choose by a slim 5-4 margin. Over the next few years, the likelihood that two or more anti-choice Justices could be appointed is very high. If just one Justice who currently supports Roe is replaced by one who does not, Roe could be reversed. If this were to happen, women would be forced to return to the days of unsafe and illegal back-alley abortions. We must work to ensure that access to safe abortion care remains a legal right for all women before it is too late.

Common Myths About the History of Abortion in America

MYTH In 17, the Supreme Courts Roe v. Wade decision made abortion legal for the first time in American history.

FACT Abortion has been performed for thousands of years, and in every society that has been studied. It was legal in the United States from the time the earliest settlers arrived on our shores until the mid- to late 1800s, when states began passing laws that made it illegal. Although a few states had liberalized their abortion laws in the late 160s and early 170s, the right to have an abortion was finally made available to all American women when the Supreme Court ruling in 17 struck down the remaining restrictive state laws.

MYTH The founding fathers never intended for abortion to be allowed in the United States.

FACT At the time the Constitution was adopted, abortions before quickening (the stage of pregnancy when the mother can feel fetal movement in the womb) were openly advertised and commonly performed. Abortion was something that the founding fathers would have been aware of, and presumably, they would not have remained silent about it if they had intended for the government to involve itself in this aspect of the private lives of its citizens.

MYTH In the 1800s, abortion was outlawed because it was so dangerous.

FACT During this time in history, all surgical procedures, including abortion, were extremely risky. Hospitals were not common, antiseptics were unknown, and even the most respected doctors had only primitive medical educations. Without the technology that we take for granted today, maternal and infant mortality rates during childbirth were extraordinarily high. The dangers from abortion were similar to the dangers from other surgeries that were not outlawed.

As scientific methods began to dominate medical practice, and technologies were developed to prevent infection, medical care on the whole became much safer and more effective. But by this time, the vast majority of women who needed abortions had no choice but to get them from illegal practitioners without these medical advances at their disposal. The back-alley abortion remained a dangerous, often deadly procedure, while areas of legally sanctioned medicine improved dramatically.

MYTH Abortion was outlawed because it is immoral.

FACT The motivations for anti-abortion laws varied from state to state, and included fears that soon the population would be dominated by the children of newly arriving immigrants, whose birth rates were higher than those of native Anglo-Saxon women. But the strongest force behind the drive to criminalize abortion was the attempt by doctors to establish for themselves exclusive rights to practice medicine. They wanted to prevent untrained practitioners, including midwives, apothecaries, and homeopaths, from competing with them for patients and for patient fees.

The best way to accomplish their goal was to eliminate one of the principle procedures that kept these competitors in business. Rather than openly admitting to such motivations, the newly formed American Medical Association (AMA) argued that abortion was both immoral and dangerous. This campaign was successful, and by 110, all but one state had criminalized abortion except where necessary, in a doctors judgment, to save the womans life. In this way, legal abortion was successfully transformed into a physicians-only practice.

The prohibition of legal abortion from the 1880s until 17 came under the same anti-obscenity or Comstock laws that prohibited the dissemination of birth control information and services. It is noteworthy that obscenity, abortion, and contraception should be so linked at a time when society deemed women incapable of making legally and socially responsible decisions and the law classified any attempts of women to make reproductive choices as unacceptable.

MYTH During the period when abortion was illegal, abortion was effectively outlawed and the safety of pregnant women was ensured.

FACT Criminalization of abortions did not reduce the numbers of women who sought abortions. In the years before Roe v. Wade, the estimates of illegal abortions ranged as high as 1. million per year1, although, of course, no accurate records could be kept of illegal procedures. What is known is that between the 1880s and 17, many thousands of women died or suffered serious medical problems after attempting to self-induce their abortions or going to untrained practitioners who performed abortions with primitive methods or in unsanitary conditions. During this time, hospital emergency room staff treated thousands of women who either died or were suffering terrible effects of abortions provided without adequate skill and care.

It should be noted that during this time some women obtained relatively safer, although still illegal, abortions from private doctors.

This practice remained prevalent for the first half of the twentieth century. Later, the rate of reported abortions began to decline, partly because doctors faced increased scrutiny from their peers and hospital administrators concerned about the legality of their operations.

Today, pro-choice advocates who fight for continued access to safe, legal abortion for all women often are motivated by their understanding of the consequences of criminalized abortion. We know from history that whenever abortion has been illegal, women have still attempted and succeeded in ending unwanted pregnancies. Unfortunately, they have often suffered serious health problems or died in the process. While the 17 Roe v. Wade decision was an important turning point in protecting women from unsafe abortion, an understanding of the pre-Roe v. Wade years is critical for making intelligent public policy decisions regarding reproductive health care in the future.

A doctor describes her experience at a county hospital before Roe v. Wade

[Hospitals] had to have beds all up and down the hallways. They were always full [because of illegal abortions]. They must have had one hundred and forty beds in those wards...in [a twenty four hour] period, youd get ten to twelve admissions. They walked into the emergency room bleeding. The first thing the doctor down there did was send them for an X-ray to see what was in their belly-to see if there were knitting needles, hooks, catheters up their belly.

A doctor describes a twenty-two year old patient whom he treated for septic shock following an illegal abortion in the 150s

[T]he infection is so overwhelming, the bacteria produce toxins that lead to a collapse of the cardiovascular system...One of the tragedies of this septic shock is that people remain lucid until the end, and she was holding my hand, and saying, Doctor, help me, Im dying. And I knew she was, and I knew there was not a blessed other thing we could do for her...I have been haunted by that girl ever since.

Several sports today involve time, practice and above all, hard work. An athlete can not be good at what he or she does without practising for long periods of time on a regular basis. There is not a single sport that does not require practice or hard work to become more talented. However, can the same be said for ballet? Ballet is described as a theatrical art form using dancing, music, and scenery to convey a story, theme, or atmosphere, (Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online). It sounds very delicate and relaxing once the definition is read but there is a lot more to it than just dancing to music. Ballet requires much more than practice and hard work; it requires physical and mental discipline. In any sport you have to stay fit and eat right but ballet goes beyond those limits. The physical demands made of ballet dancers are more than or equal to that of other athletes.

Ballet dancers do suffer several kinds of injuries that can affect their career. Dancers can twist or break a limb as they are dancing on stage but if it is a performance they must continue with the show. No stretchers will come and carry the dancer off stage. There is no spare dancer to take the place of an injured dancer. In a sport like football or basketball, if a player is injured during a period in the game, the game is stopped temporarily as the injured player is removed from the game and replaced by a substitute. Ballet dancers must show much more physical endurance if they are injured. Since a ballet career is so strict and demanding, one little defect or injury in a performance can cost a dancer his or her career. In a sport like hockey, players have suffered multiple concussions and injuries but are still playing hockey after recovery. There is the chance where an injury in a sport can cost a player his or her career because he or she can no longer walk but in ballet something very insignificant can make a dancer useless for a performance.

There is a lot of physical discipline on ballet dancers that affect them in many ways. The ballet teachers and instructors do not expect the personal best of a dancer; they expect the best of a dancer. This is why instructors are constantly correcting the forms of dancers to get it right the first time and every time. Dancers are always bending their bodies a little more or lifting their legs a little higher. In the long term, these strains on the body affect the body very dramatically especially the feet and the back. The feet must support a dancer in all types of movements but this weight is applied to the toes the most. The very ends of the toes are used in dancing to achieve the utmost delicacy and height. The shoes used to allow the feet to stand in such a way, physically scar the feet in the long run along with the dancing. The back is also scared because it suffers the beating from the body’s constant bending and stretching actions. Sport athletes do not have to impress their coaches or anybody with their talent. The only thing they must do is practice to compete and win. Stretching is necessary in sports but not to the extent to that of ballet.

The physical demands made of ballet dancers are more than or equal to that of other athletes. Injuries in ballet can affect the careers of dancers in such a way that they are fired in a minute due to a little stubbed toe. If it means they cannot perform as well as they could, they are useless. Hockey players have suffered many serious injures but are still out on the ice today competing. Dancers must endure any injury they get during a performance. As in a sport like football, there are no doctors standing by to help out an injured dancer. The show must go on with or without a broken leg or sprained ankle. This shows physical strength much more than that of athletes. Overall, from the points stated, ballet is a much more physically demanding performance than everyday sports.

Signor Hortensio, twixt such friends as we

Few words suffice; and therefore, if thou know

One rich enough to be Petruccios wife

As wealth is burden of my wooing dance

Buy taming of the shrew term paper

Be she as foul as was Florentius love,

As old as Sibyl, and as curst and shrewd

As Socrates Xanthippe or a worse,

She moves me notor not removes at least

Affections edge in me, were she as rough

As are the swelling Adriatic seas.

I come to wive it wealthily in Padua;

If wealthily, then happily in Padua.

This piece of dialogue is found between a conversation between Hortensio and Petruchio. Petruchio is telling Hortensio about his quest to find a wife in Padua. He specifically states his want of a woman with wealth. He states “Be she as foul as Florentius’ love, As old as Sibyl, and as curst and shrewd As Socrates’ Xanthippe or a worse...” In Petruchio’s mind, money is the only important issue with a marriage. He cares about nothing else. He came to Padua on purpose because of its rich families. Hortensio will obviously introduce him to Katherine, who probably has no other chance in finding a husband. She may be sharp tempered, but the dowry attached to her is quite large. Petruchio states very openly about his quest, which implies that this was quite common back in the Elizabethan Age. The issue about money is also a factor in marriages today. I have no idea what the fuck else to say. I just need a fucking essay. So Im just typing shit. Sorry if I disappointed you. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
