“A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” is a coming-of-age story. A story in which Stephen Dedalus moves from the insecurities of childhood to the confidence and determination of adulthood. Stephen always wanted the same basic thing the freedom to live as he pleased free from the rule of others. Stephen’s name, Dedalus, is a reference to flight in Greek mythology. Like his martyred namesake, Stephen suffers because of his unique perception of the world. He works his way through the labyrinth of school, Dublin, and the church before he transcends this maze. Stephen reflects on life in Ireland saying “When the soul of a man is born in this country there are nets flung at it to hold it back from flight” (0). Throughout the novel, Joyce relates flight and the beings of flight to the experiences that move Stephen in the direction of attending his goal. Stephens ultimate desire to live for himself and to have the ability to realize his own dreams without the limitations of others is represented by the concept of flight.


One of the earliest examples of the connection of freedom with flight can be found at the end of the first chapter as Stephen’s classmates are cheering him as a hero. In a literal and physical sense Stephen is essentially flying above his classmates as they made a cradle of their locked hands and hoisted him among them and carried him along (60). Stephens flight cannot be contained to this simple physical experience. Stephen, a socially challenged child who referred to himself as small and weak, is now being cheered as the champion of the College. His euphoria and sense of flight goes beyond the gratification of being accepted by his schoolmates. It represents the beginning of Stephens independence of thought and freedom from the rules of others. He has taken a stand against Father Dolan’s unjust punishment at the hands of the Catholic Church. Stephen goes through life trying to escape those who control him, in particular, the Church. At this point in his life, he is still very much a child. Stephen is not yet ready to throw away his allegiance the church, and says that he must remain, very quite and obedient and he wished that he could do something kind for [Father Dolan] to show him that he was not proud (60-61). At this stage in his life, Stephen is still comfortable pledging allegiance to others around him, but he is at his happiest when he can act as he chooses.


Stephen again encounters the imagery of flight after his family has been forced to move from their home in Bray and Stephen begins his studies at Belvedere College in Dublin. There he meets Vincent Heron, a boy whom he describes as having, a birds face as well as a birds name and a shock of pale hair like a ruffled crest (80). Heron represents everything that Stephen secretly yearns for. While the rest of the student body is obediently inside the assembly hall waiting for the play to begin, Heron and his friend are outside enjoying a cigarette. Heron is independent and refuses to fall in line with the demands of the faculty at Belvedere College. He has not allowed anyone to get in the way of his thoughts and desires, and as a result he is portrayed by Joyce as having birdlike characteristics. Heron is free to fly away to the world he desires, a quality Stephen admires.

Stephen’s fear of being unable to fly leads him to momentarily return to the Catholic Church of his childhood. The sermon given to Stephen and his classmates during their Saint Xavier retreat at Belvedere College entails the reasons one may be sentenced to eternity in Hell and the suffering of its inhabitance. The preacher tells Stephen, who has recently taken to a life of debauchery and visiting prostitutes on a regular basis, that in Hell both the flesh and the soul suffer always. The image of Lucifer, the fallen angel, is the central image of the sermon. This is where Stephens desire to take flight is captured. Lucifer was an angel who had the ability to fly and was unbound by the rules of others. Through his sin, however, all of that was lost. Stephen fears that he too has been sentenced to lose his wings and will be forever Hell bound. It is this fear that causes Stephen to repent.


Flight is again the theme when Stephen realizes that for his entire life he has been stopping short of living a life that is truly free. He has lived a life so meticulous in its adherence to the practices of the Catholic Church that he is approached by the director of Belvedere and asked if he has ever considered a vocation in the priesthood. The priest tells Stephen that he is marked off from his companions by his piety (170). Although much of the imagery associated with the Catholic Church seems to imply flight flying towards heaven on the wings of angels, being born up on eagles wing by the Hand of God, the idea of Christs Ascension into the sky, these are nowhere to be found in Stephens mind. Instead Joyce tells the reader how Stephen is not destined to be a member of the priesthood because being a member of any order would prevent him from learning the wisdom of others among the snares of the world (175). Stephen believes that freedom in life must not be restricted.


Stephen begins to comprehend his need for freedom and desire for flight as he is making his decision to reject the priesthood. As Stephen walks around the streets of Dublin thoroughly convinced that he must turn away from the priesthood, he looks skyward and focuses on the slowdrifting clouds, dappled and seaborn. They were voyaging across the deserts of the sky (181). The vision that Stephen sees, a hawk-like man flying sunward above the sea (18), is a foretelling of his final decision to leave the land that he calls home in search of freedom and artistic identity. Joyce connects the sky with the concept of journeying and freedom. It is at this moment that Stephen begins to realize the desire that has been within him all along. He has been trying to find freedom within a system which is founded upon strict rules and regulations. The only answer to his problem is, like the clouds, to journey away from that which controls him.


Stephens change in thinking is best represented when he wades out into the water and a beautiful girl suddenly appears before him. Much as Stephen describes Heron earlier, the features of this girl are bird-like in nature. He refers to her as being


. . . like one whom magic had changed into the likeness of a strange and beautiful seabird. Her long slender bare legs were delicate as a cranes and pure save where an emerald trail of seaweed had fashioned itself as a sign upon the flesh. Her thighs, fuller and softhued as ivory, were bared almost to the hips where the white fringes of her drawers we like featherings of soft white down. Her slateblue skirts were kilted boldly about her waist and dovetailed behind her. Her bosom was as a birds soft and slight, slight and soft as the breast of some darkplumaged dove. (185-186).


This girl, like Heron, represents the freedom that Stephen can have if he makes the choice to fly over the nets that are holding him back. The girl differs from Heron because she is there for Stephen to accept as his own. When Stephen was following Heron, he was on the outside looking into a life of freedom. In this instance, the opportunity is set before him, and he is given the ability to choose for himself.


As Stephen is standing on the steps of the library, he comes to a realization while watching a flock of birds fly overhead. He feels the need to depart from the world he has established for himself and start again fresh just as birds are “ever leaving the homes they had built to wander” (45). He feels that “the augury he had sought in the wheeling darting birds and in the pale space of sky above him had come forth from his heart like a bird from a turret quietly and swiftly” (45). As he takes off into the unknown, he calls on his old father, Daedelus, the old artificer, to stand [him] now and ever in good stead (76). He has created for himself, just as his legendary namesake, wings to fly from his oppression into a world where he will be free to exercise his own desires.

The process of learning a second language can get scary and intimidating at times, especially for adult learners, who have developed and established their individual identities, beliefs, and patterns of behaviour. Although we may not always be aware of how our mother tongue and our use of it influences the way we look at life and ourselves, and the comfortable, confident and secure way in which wed use the mother tongue, fluent and efficient self-expression, which I believe is the gist of being a “social animal”, sometimes becomes a tool for communication, sometimes a means of establishing self-esteem, and sometimes, a method of self defence.


Humans, especially after reaching a certain age and after getting used to the ways of life, seem to take their confident use of the mother tongue for granted, just as we take for granted the value of breathing and do not even notice, most of the time, that as a living organism, human breathes. Therefore, when exposed to a new means of communication�or another method of breathing�adults start feeling insecure and intimidated by this new experience, most probably frightened by the idea that it might end up changing the whole of what has so far been established as the “self”.


Faced with such established attitudes and stances regarding life in general, and language learning in particular, an ESL teacher might find it difficult to appeal to the learners’ mind, without first comforting, and to a certain extent freeing the learners’ hearts and minds of the end-products of their respective stances, which can be defined as a prejudice towards the new language or the “yet unknown”. The concept of Neuro-Linguistic Programming runs to the rescue of ESL teachers under circumstances as these, when learners cannot neutralize their rooted sets of thoughts and beliefs and feel the need to defend them. It definitely ran to my rescue!

Learning process can, at times, end up being more frightening for adult learners as compared to younger ones, since adults resemble the concept of tabula rasa, a clean slate, less than younger learners do, and are therefore relatively more difficult to guide to the goal of learning a new language. These were the thoughts I had had in mind for some time, which eventually inspired me to tell my students on the first day of school that there is nothing scary about learning English. “By the end of the year, you will be a lot better at using it; and you will see that being able to express your thoughts and feelings in a language other than your mother tongue will only make you a richer and more able person,” I told them. I also felt the need to convince them that responding to the brand new language elements in a similar manner to that of babies learning the mother tongue could sometimes help them overcome the feeling of despair � if this feeling were to grab them upon being exposed to something they had never seen before.


Language, as Diana Beaver states, “is one of the many forms of communication; one of the ways in which we inform people about what is going on inside us (NLP and Lazy Language Learning, 1, paragraph ).


This is true for the language, which a person is able to use fluently and confidently, that is, the mother tongue.


However, when it comes to expressing oneself in another language, the feeling of security as to expressing the self disappear, and leave the stage in the learners’ tummies to a crowded flock of discomforting butterflies; because the adult learners are not only more worried about making mistakes, but are also, perhaps at a lower level of the consciousness, more afraid of losing the “self” and the personal history.


Beaver’s self-observation that she allocated to herself completely different belief systems as she used different languages (1, paragraph 1), was what led me to think that the teacher could perhaps work on the learner’s level of “Beliefs”, the logical level of processes that refer to why we act and think the way we do. Without trying to judge or change the learner, the instructor could try to guide the learner to take on a more objective and less judgemental stance towards himself or herself and towards the learning process itself, so as to allow the learner to open up room for the coming piece of information, using the principles of NLP as a means of programming learners’ thinking.


The instructor, could therefore avoid channelling efforts into attempting to change learners’ attitude towards the learning process and trying to discipline them through such conventional methods as loading heaps of homework on their shoulders, when they seem resistant to the new pieces of information and new elements of language. The instructor could work on ways of leading learners to the goal of growing into fluent, efficient and good users of the second language, by encouraging them to believe that, in fact, all the fluent speakers of the language were born without the ability to speak it; and that it did not take these native speakers more than one or two years before they could start using the language.


This, I believe, would not only be a more humanistic and empathetic approach towards the learners, but also a more effective way of dealing with beliefs and values which learners have gained through their lives and which now stand in their ways as obstacles. It would, at the same time, serve as a perfect way of guiding learners to discipline and tame their own selves and thinking habits, and prepare them for the learning process.


Beaver proposes a wonderful way of getting learners to perceive a language at a more non-judgemental and anxiety-free level listening solely to the rhythm and music of the language without worrying about the meanings, and paying attention only to how the body responds to the music of the language (1, paragraph 6).


I tried this experiment with an elementary-level learner, by letting him listen to a taped speech by a native speaker. The speech was rather lengthy, and it addressed a native audience on an advanced-level topic. The experiment yielded rather interesting and rewarding results. It freed the learner of his worries about the meaning and of all his anxieties related with communicating in that language. I observed that the learner actually enjoyed listening to the melody of the English language, and was glad to see that he showed no signs of boredom, although he did not understand a large portion of what was said.


Such an experiment actually provides, I understood, especially the lower-level learner with a clean slate, and transforms learner’s intellect into something purer and similar to intellect of an infant only just learning how to use the mother tongue with the simple rubric of acting like a baby.


Although I have not conducted this experiment in class, I have provided my elementary-level learners with the rubric as to what they could do with their beliefs in times of trouble act like a baby, clear your minds of all previous experiences and knowledge when you feel trapped by something you have never seen before, or something whose reciprocal does not exist in your mother tongue.


The results I have already are surprisingly rewarding the learners are now less worried about making mistakes while using the language, and are more comfortable about letting each other spot and correct the mistakes they make! This change in their attitude, I believe, was very much inspired by my repetitions of the simple rubric, whenever I noticed that they got stuck.


Having the luxury of “going back to the beginning for ourselves” (1, paragraph 14), to the times when we were busy learning our mother tongue, when we needed to communicate in order to survive, does give us all the chance to use the language as if it were a part of our own body. All we really need to remember is that, as Beaver states, we concentrated on the message; we did a lot of copying; we were safe; we were free to make mistakes, and figure out our own way of learning; we received a great deal of applause from the rest of the family; and above all, we all have an inborn notion of communication through a language (1, paragraph 15).

When I was told the year before last that I had an illness that threatened my life, I was ready to do anything to better. I learned that I would need months of treatment, maybe even a year, before I would know whether I would recover. I settled into a boring routine that I spent all day at the hospital getting treatment for DIC. Fear and despair engulfed me.

I could not live a normal life. As the months of my treatment dragged on, I was able to stay out of the hospital for longer periods. The doctor said I could go back to school, and that it would be good for me to change my environment. However, fear and despair still engulfed me. To my surprise, I found that when I studied, I could ease my emotions, I could be distracted by the amount of homework and the knowledge that I wanted to again.


I realized that if I didn¡¯t care about the illness and I did everything as if I were normal, I would not be overcome. Although it was difficult for me, I tried to live a normal life and I put my attention on studying. Now I am recovering, and I am controlling my fears, I don¡¯t care how long I can live and don¡¯t fear the illness. I just do everything as if I didn¡¯t have any illness. I have learned that when I face a crisis, I should not fear. I just do my best.

be immediately apparent. In order to gain sight, several of the characters must first lose it. The journey is


tumultuous from loss of sight to new-found vision, but results in the realization of self and the nature of


life.


At the beginning of the play, King Lear holds absolute authority over England. He is noble and


respected, and in the highest position. However, he is growing old, and decides that it is time to transfer


ownership of the land to his three daughters. He declares without hesitation, “Know that we have divided


in three our kingdom” (I, i, -40), but he is blind to the consequences that apportioning the kingdom will


have on the country. He also fails to see the threat of impending civil war between the Dukes. Shakespeare


uses the division of the kingdom to set a faulty society, and to show that Lear cannot see the consequences


of his actions. Lear is established from this point as a flawed character. He is not blind as a result of


others’ actions, but of his own doing.


Lear is also blind to the false flattery of his daughters, Goneril and Regan. He foolishly accepts


their over-enthusiastic proclamations of love. This demonstrates his self-indulgent behaviour; he would


rather hear flattering lies then the truth. When Cordelia speaks her true feelings and says, “I love your


Majesty according to my bond, no more nor less” (I, i, 4-5), Lear is insulted by her blunt words and


disowns her. Thus, Goneril and Regan are each allotted half of England, and Cordelia goes to France. The


audience realizes that Cordelia represents absolute truth and love. Lear’s failure to see this is the tragic


flaw that causes his downfall. Shakespeare uses metaphorical blindness as the trigger for Lear’s descent


from an all-powerful king to the most essential form of man. Lear has lost sight of the difference between


appearance and reality.


Soon, Lear realizes the true nature of his daughters, and that they have stripped him of his


authority. He no longer has his men, a symbol of his status. He has nothing, and it is the result of his


inability to see the truth. He is not welcome anywhere, so he heads out into a raging storm that reflects his


furious mood. He is desperate to figure out what went wrong, and at the same time fears going mad. In his


great swell of emotion, however, he stops to think


“Poor naked wretches, wheresoe’er you are,


That bide the pelting of this pitiless storm,


How shall your houseless heads and unfed sides,


Your looped and windowed raggedness, defend


you


From seasons such as these? O, I have ta’en


Too little care of this! Take physic, pomp;


Expose thyself to what wretches feel,


That thou mayst shake the superflux to them,


And show the heavens more just.” (III, iv, 8-6)


Lear has had a change in character. Before, he shows little concern for the welfare of others and is very


self-involved. Now, he shows compassion for all mankind. He realizes his duty towards helping others; “I


have ta’en too little care of this!” He also acknowledges his own responsibility in what is happening to his


life. Shakespeare allows his audience to begin to respect Lear once again; they realize Lear is not entirely a


fool. The imagery of poor men makes the audience to see Lear as one. The image of having no protection


from “seasons” is a representation of what Lear feels emotionally. He is out in the storm like a wretch, but


thinks of other people rather than his own afflictions. He is gaining insight into what it is to be a man.


Lear finds Edgar in the hovel, and views him as the epitome of man.


“…Thou art the thing itself; unaccommodated man


is no more but such a poor, bare, forked animal as


thou art. Off, off, you lendings!” (III, iv, 108-111)


He is now stripped of his clothing, which is the last remainder of his former self. The clothing imagery is


employed as a symbol of status. After Lear has removed the bondage of clothing, the audience identifies


that he is liberated from his past mistakes. Shakespeare also uses animal imagery to affect the audience.


Lear is a naked like a beast. He is at the height of his transition from king to man, and has reached the


most primitive state. Although he has nothing, he is free to rise to the status of a great man once again.


This is a key turning point in the play, because from here Lear begins his ascension. Lear has gained sight


about the true nature of man. He is no longer blind.


As a parallel to reinforce the story of Lear, the Earl of Gloucester experiences a similar plight.


This heightens the discomfort and fear of the audience, because such extraordinary circumstances are


occurring simultaneously. Gloucester’s bastard son, Edmund, forges a letter from his half-brother, Edgar.


Gloucester believes that Edgar is plotting against him. Like Lear, Gloucester is self-indulgent and believes


false declarations from the evil child. He is rash, and is quick to turn on his son Edgar with little evidence


“O villain, villain! His very opinion in the letter.


Abhorred villain, unnatural, detested, brutish villain;


worse than brutish!” (I, ii, 80-8)


He is blind to both Edgar’s innocence, as well as Edmund’s intentions. He has lost sight of the truth. This


affects Shakespeare’s audience because it creates suspense and fear. The audience awaits what will come


of this falsehood, but remains incapable of stopping the outcome. Gloucester’s language is vehement, and


his use of the word villain repeatedly demonstrates his rash and unclear thinking. He is unable to see the


truth partly because of Edmund’s trickery, but also because of a character flaw. He has lost sight.


Gloucester’s blindness to the truth is the cause of his turn in fortune. Edgar has fled, and


Gloucester remains with Edmund. Edmund desires his father’s title and wealth, and tells Cornwall and


Regan that Gloucester is a traitor. Gloucester’s blindness to Edmund’s true nature has come back to him


full circle. He is tortured by Cornwall, and his eyes are plucked out. He realizes his mistake and Edgar’s


innocence, when he desperately declares,


“I have no way and therefore want no eyes;


I stumbled when I saw. Full oft ‘tis seen,


Our means secure us, and our mere defects


Prove our commodities. Oh, dear son Edgar,


The food of thy abused father’s wrath!


Might I but live to see thee in my touch,


I’d say I had eyes again!” (IV, i, 18-)

Gloucester is at the bottom of the Wheel of Fortune. He has no one left to support him, and realizes the


great error he has made. Shakespeare uses Gloucester’s tragedy to evoke pity from the audience. The


audience is sympathetic towards him because he is not as evil as the characters who have wronged him, and


because he has fallen from nobility to a lowly man. He regrets his rash banishment of Edgar so much that


he thinks he does not deserve eyes. His physical malady is a result of the metaphorical blindness that he


suffered. To see the true nature of Edmund and Edgar, Gloucester had to literally lose his sight.


Edgar also undertakes a journey in which he gains sight. Like Lear and Gloucester, he is brought


down by a character trait. Edgar, who represents absolute good, is flawed by his naivet�. He is blind to


Edmund’s scheming until it is too late. He fears Gloucester’s wrath, and must flee from the castle. Like


Lear, he heads out into the raging storm. He assumes a new identity


“Whiles I may ‘scape,


I will preserve myself; and am bethought


To take the basest and most poorest shape


That ever penury, in contempt of man,


Brought near to beast.” (II, iii, 5-)


Later, in the same passage, he says, “Poor Tom, that’s something yet Edgar I nothing am.” (II, iii, 0-1)


He is now disguised as a madman. When Lear and his followers encounter him, he speaks nonsense. The


image of Edgar as the poorest, most primitive man is a parallel to Lear, but Shakespeare also creates a


contrast to Lear’s real madness through Edgar’s assumed behaviour. Edgar must participate in Lear’s


games to save his disguise, but his asides inform the audience of his real opinion on Lear’s state of mind.


His comment, “I nothing am”, also sets the tone for Lear’s theme of being stripped down to nothing. Edgar


loses sight of the truth, and thus loses everything.


Similar to Lear, Edgar falls to the bottom because he lost sight of Edmund’s true nature. He gains


insight from meeting Lear, as Lear does from him. He watches Lear act like a desperate madman, and says,


“My tears begin to take his part so much they mar my counterfeiting.” (III, iv, 5-60) He feels compassion


for Lear, and later says

“When we our betters see bearing our woes,


We scarcely think our miseries our foes.


Who alone suffers most i’ th’ mind,


Leaving free things and happy shows behind;


But then the mind much sufferance doth o’erskip


When grief hath mates, and bearing fellowship.


How light and portable my pain seems now,


When that which makes me bend makes the


King bow.” (III, vi, 101-108)


His encounter with Lear has left him humbled. He realizes that he is not as poorly off as he once thought,


and also that Lear is a true friend, which Shakespeare returns to later in the plot. Although Edgar still feels


pain, he can now bear it. The effect on the audience is that Lear is again reinforced as a noble character.


The new fellowship between Lear and Edgar also establishes that the king’s fortunes are starting to turn.


Edgar realizes that fortune is changeable. He has gained insight into the nature of life itself.


Through the trials and tribulations of these three characters, the audience comes to pity their


afflictions, and simultaneously fears that such things could happen to them. The characters fall from the


highest ranks into the lowest depths because they are blind to truth. They are only able to gain insight when


they have reached the bottom, and having nothing, open their eyes to reality.

WOMAN IN AN ARMCHAIR


Abstract. The definition of the word is; “a stylization, rearrangement, simplification of form for the purpose of artistic expression. Abstract images are most often derivative of forms actually seen or experienced.” For an example, take the human face. It is a form that is commonly known and so recognizable, that if it is taken and then rearranged it is in most instances still recognizable. This is one of the methods or styles that the artist Pablo Picasso (1881-17) used quite frequently.


The piece of his that I chose to analyze was, Woman In An Armchair, created in 146. The media that was used was oil and gouache on canvas. After observing it for some time, I found it to be an interesting but perplexing image. Picasso’s work was very complex and intense, to say the least. It seems as if there was so much involved in everything he did, that I probably haven’t even come close to touching half of what was really there, yet hopefully I’ve made a small crack in the surface.


There is a basic form to the painting, and it is recognizable. You do see a woman sitting in what appears to be an armchair. However, her form is an abstract one.

Immediately, my eyes are drawn to the upper left-hand corner where there is a crème colored rectangle that portrays a basic window. I believe that Picasso used this window as one of his focal points. It is the first and last thing that my eyes fall on. For me it also represents simplicity. I feel that the window is important because the rest of the picture is so complicated. It is essentially the only simple thing in the painting that is all by itself, and still a focus. I think the artist probably realized this and that is why it is there.


Next, I notice the woman almost in the center, with a ton of fabulous hair. You see, or rather get the general idea that she is sitting in a green armchair, and she is wearing a blue dress. There is a yellow area of space on the right side, which I believe portrays the wall connecting to the floor. There is also a smaller portion of the same space on the other side, connecting to the armchair. For my eyes, this helps to balance the painting as a whole. Whether or not that was Picasso’s intention or not, I can only guess.


There is in fact, quite a bit of repetition in the piece. There are two circles in the center of the painting which is also the center of the woman. I believe these two circles to be the woman’s breasts. Her shoulders are also two circles, and there are two circles that are the arms of the armchair. Although the right one is covered by her hand, it seems to still imply that it is similar to the left one. The skirt of her dress is a triangle which works as sort of an arrow pointing up to her waist, chest and then face and hair. It seems safe to say that Picasso felt comfortable putting a significant amount of negative space between her face and her hair. From the corners of this space, (traced in orange on attached visual), there are two diagonal lines that meet in another type of arrow form which points in the opposite direction. This and the previous arrow are pointed at the two circles representing the woman’s chest, which appears to be another focal point, or focus that Picasso used in this piece. I say this mainly because almost every single diagonal, line or curve either points at or goes through these two circles. I believe that one of the most significant parts of this painting is the imaginary curve that can be drawn through the four center circles, that of her shoulders and chest. (This is traced in red on the visual.) Another curve can be connected to it, (also in red.) that then gives the shape of a football. These two curves are repeated above the first curve, and in the center of the second curve, only they are reduced in size, (traced in blue on the visual.) and this is the shape of the negative space between the woman’s hair and face.


The colors of it were perfect. The hues Picasso used for the painting were yellow-gold, crème, light orange-brown, blue, light purple and a chartreuse-green. A large portion of the piece was achromatic. Black and gray were used the most for negative spaces. Although there were not many hues used, the saturation of each one was just bright enough, and each color was painted next to a color that created just the right amount of contrast.


Texture is visible throughout the work of art, along the walls and floor, but especially all over the woman. She is completely texturized except for the negative space between her hair and face.


Pablo Picasso’s painting of a Woman In A Armchair, is one of my favorites. I love it because like many of his works, it is simple while at the same time being intricate. In all honesty, I have no idea what Picasso was really trying to do when he created this painting. I don’t know why he chose a particular color, or why he placed a line where he did. However, I do know that it works, and for some reason it makes sense � at least to me. I can only speculate on the why and on the how. Essentially, that is the beauty of art, to look at a piece of artwork and analyze what works for you, what causes it to make sense to you as an individual. You don’t need to understand a piece or even like it. Just observe, appreciate and respect it.

“Dulce et Decorum Est”


Looking back now, we can all recognise that The Great War was nothing but an “ecstasy of fumbling”, from the drawing board to the battlefield, but nearly a century on has anything changed? Is asymmetric warfare as sanitised as we may be lead to believe, or is it all a cover up for a more sinister truth, like that which is depicted in Wilfred Owen’s poem “Dulce Et Decorum Est”?


With every line Owen puts me further into the role of the foot soldier on the battlefield, describing his very own experiences, to potent effect. He depicts the horror when a platoon is gassed, in a surprise attack.


The structure of the poem goes a long way to create this realism, which is responsible for incurring such vivid images. The poem is set into four verses, each structured to encapsulate an image of the exact moment in your mind. From the first verse, it’s slow pace, as the soldiers “limp on ..with fatigue.” To the sudden change of pace as, in “an ecstasy of fumbling” the “outstripped five-nines” drop down on the unsuspecting soldiers, in verse two. However, the third verse is perhaps the most important as in just two lines we hear a young soldier “guttering, choking, drowning”, dying on the page in front of us. In the fourth verse we see the final scene, after they have flung the young soldier into the “wagon”, Owen turns to the reader, in second person, and laments his final thought to the reader, cursing anyone who ever dared to say “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori”.

The poet’s imagery is astounding, you feel “every jolt”, you are there “bent double.. and knock-kneed, lame.. deaf”. I try to fit the clumsy equipment when your leader screams “Gas!Gas! Quick, boys” and “through the dim misty panes and thick green light”. I see my friend “before my helpless eyes.. like a man on fire or lime.. Watch the white eyes writhing in his face and hear his froth corrupted lungs”, it is I, the reader, that hears all of this, as Owen did. It is this mortifying imagery that the poet uses to make me feel like his “friend”, and that is why after reading the poem, you too can’t help but wonder why any human has ever underwent such vile conditions, to die for such a cause.


The meaning, however may well have been lost had it not been for this chaotic and shocking scene, portrayed with such fine use of rhythm and rhyme. Owen uses his particular literary techniques, to make the rhythm and rhyme go hand in hand. Owen calls upon the use of assonance and half rhyme to depict the pathetic rhythm of the men’s march. As the men “curse through sludge...began to trudge...limp, on bloodshod”, the sound of every heavy footstep, the panting, the slosh of the mud almost sounds out of the page. The rhythm remains; like the battle; long, slow and dull. Even in the “ecstasy of fumbling...yelling out and stumbling”, and Owen’s dramatic speech at the end of the poem, still the fatigue sets the dark, depressing rhythm. Making the soldier and reader think alike, and wonder why.


Wilfred Owen’s poem is suffused with the horror of battle, and yet finely structured and innovative. Owens use of half-rhyme gives his poetry a dissonant, disturbing quality that amplifies his themes.


As we sip our tea and watch the evening news on the “box”, we could be forgiven for forgetting that there is a war on. All we see are blip’s in computer crosshairs, as a multi-billion pound coalition force “neutralises the threat”. In places where the macabre realities of trench warfare are seemingly forgotten, the worst crime is that the guerrillas and generals alike will forever still spout out the old lie “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.”

Revenge causes one to act blindly through anger rather than through reason. It is part of human nature to seek revenge against another human being. People easily succumb to revenge especially if they were in any way wronged or victimized by another person. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One of These Days”, the theme of revenge is presented throughout the story. The dentist, Aurelio Escovar, clearly has a history with the Mayor making the dentist want to seek revenge. The dentist gets revenge by using improper sterilization, prolonging the suffering, and intensifying the pain.


First of all, the dentist used improper sterilization. The instruments used by dentists should be properly sterilized before and after every use. However, this is not the case with the instruments used by the dentist in “One of These Days”. For example, boiling water is used to sterilize the instruments, “He brought the basin of sterilized instruments to the worktable and took them out of the water” (157). The problem with this is that germs and bacteria can still exist on the instruments because no chemicals for sterilization are used. Moreover, these germs and bacteria can be transferred to the Mayor ultimately causing more harm to him. The end result is infection occurring even after the tooth is removed.


In addition, he prolonged the suffering. Even before the dentist knew the Mayor had an abscess he made the Mayor suffer by ignoring his dental request, “The Mayor wants to know if you’ll pull his tooth.” (156). Furthermore, the dentist took his time prepping for the removal of the Mayor’s tooth, “still without hurrying” (157). The dentist knew the abscess caused a lot of suffering for the Mayor, but did not show any compassion to the Mayor. Even more, the Mayor’s suffering had gone on for five days prior to seeing the dentist, “He had shaved the left side of his face, but the other side, swollen and in pain, had a five-day-old beard.” (156). Of course the dentist noticing the Mayor’s suffering did nothing to ease his suffering and discomfort because the dentist wanted his revenge to be bitter sweet.


Most of all, he intensified the pain. For instance, the dentist did not use any anesthesia, “It has to be without anesthesia” (156), implying that he just wanted the Mayor to feel lots of pain. In addition, he made the Mayor do most of the work in removing the tooth causing great pain and agony for the Mayor. Finally, the dentist touches the painful area, “grasped the tooth with hot forceps” (157) inflicting instant pain to the Mayor. No one would ever consider touching a painful area of their body with a hot item. Unfortunately, the dentist only had revenge on his mind and wanted to inflict tremendous amount of pain, “The Mayor seized the arms of the chair, braced his feet with all his strength, and felt an icy void in his kidneys” (157).

Water lilies painting I have seen in books makes the painting even more interesting,


even more beautiful. I enjoy nature paintings, especially with water, such as ponds, and


streams. I believe that in this particular painting time period would not matter as much,


nature relatively stays the same.


Monets palette tended warm and cool colors . The painting Water Lilies had


more pastel light colors, such as greens, pinks, grays, blues, and violet. Monet has a very


distinctive brush stroke his style of painting is not formed of lines but more of light


strokes, and blurred images. The emphasis was on the importance of light as the


describer of the objects and light as the real subject of the picture. The painting gives


a certain calmness, and relaxation to them. The painting were done outside on the


site at all times of the day, so all the effects of light could be studied and translated


into paint on the canvas.


At the end of the water lily pond Monet built a wooden bridge in the Japanese


style. Between 18 and 100 he used this bridge as the subject of his first series of


water lily painting, Placing it symmetrically across the middle of the canvas. Putting the


bridge behind him Monet had started to focus his painting on the surface of the water,


painting little but the flowers and leaves in the water.


Water lilies is an oil painting, which happens to be one of the most popular

contrasting cool blues and greens with pink and orange in the pond.


The painting of water lilies to me is a excellent express of light and shadows of


nature. I believe the painting are extremely beautiful, and fun to look at. The painting


can almost take you away to that very place, very soothing, not dramatic bright colors.

Pride, what is it about pride? Wars have been fought over it, whole cities have been burned to the ground, vast empire have been wiped off the face of the earth; all because a few people had too much pride to step aside. Pride, though usually strong, in some cases does come in extremes. This is where one can be caught between a rock and a hard place by their own excessive pride. A good example of excessive pride is in the play “The Crucible”. This play is about a group of girls that, instead of being caught dancing, blame others for their actions. This causes the town of Salem to go crazy looking for the work of witches. A lot of good people are accused of being witches and those who have too much pride to confess, because of this lie, are killed because of it. Pride is evident in three of the main characters; Reverend Hale, Elizabeth Proctor, and most distinct in the character of John Proctor.


The first character that I will discuss is the good reverend Hale. He originally arrived at Salem with no doubt about the existence of witches or any unfairness of the court. An example of his pride that he holds for the court system is evident on page 861 where he says “our greatest judges sit in Salem now”. This struggle between what he thinks is right and what the court thinks is right entangle him in a web of feelings, feelings of betray of the nobility of the system and the honest goodness of these people. As the play progress Hale is found on the other side arguing against the court on page 881 when he yells at the judges “It is a lie! They are innocent!” As a result of his pride the same people that he helps convict are now the people he is trying to save.


The next specimen of pride is the wife and mother Elizabeth Proctor. On page 874 her husband John has just confessed to adultery and she is brought in to find out for herself if this is the truth, which it is. Elizabeth, not knowing that John had already confessed and having pride in her good husband says “My husband is a goodly man, sir,” implying he is above adultery. Just after those words left her mouth, John yells at her to tell the truth for he has. At this she replies “Oh, God” realizing she has just made him a liar. At the end of the play, as John is about to die, she apologies her pride but John will not allow her to admit it. He says that his sins are his own, not hers.

The character that shows the most pride is John Proctor. This is a man that would not let the judges nail his confession to the church door because it would ruin his good name. On page 886 when asked why he would not let them nail it to the door he said “Because it is my name! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” With pride in is heart he tears the confession. As he does Judge Danforth says “Hang them high over the town! Who weeps for them weeps for corruption!” And so, John dies, and he dies with his good name. Now, whether this is the right thing to do or not, I can not judge because I have never been in a situation where my life depended on my pride.


In comparison the other characters show very little pride when compared with John Proctor. While the others just live with their guilt, he dies for his pride. At the being I state that pride is always strong, but in some cases people take it to extremes and this is one of those cases of excessive pride. That he would give his life to keep his name seems extreme. The title of this play is The Crucible which is a severe test or trial. I think this play test the limits of how much pride people hold in even the smallest things

When Tom Hanks first got the island he started to look for food and water. He found water in a coconut shell and drank it. He then searched around on the island for food. He wasn’t very successful because he had no fire to cook the food. He did eat the coconuts though. After a while he decided to try and catch fish with a spear. He was unsuccessful because he was not fast enough to catch the fish. These are all examples of the physiological needs in Marlow’s Hierarchy. He then tried over and over to start a fire. When you have physiological needs, all you can think about is getting food. He wrote the word “HELP” in the sand hoping someone would see it. These are examples of both physiological needs and safety needs. If he had the fire, he could cook food over it. It could also be used to signal planes or ships that he was on the island.


He also put together a little tent like fort that served as his shelter. Later on, there was a big storm and he moved to a cave that he came across. He needed a safe place to stay when the weather got bad. The cave provided safety from the outside. When he was trying to start the fire, he cut his hand. He then picked up a volleyball and threw it. He went to pick up the volleyball and realized that his hand had made a face on the ball. He started talking to the ball all the time. He even acted as if he was having an actual conversation with the ball. Tom got upset when he kicked the ball and could not find it. He became very attached to the volleyball that he named Wilson that he got very upset and even started to cry when he lost the ball towards the end of the movie. He kept a picture of his fianc� with him the whole time he was on island. This gave him hope and it was also a reason to live. These are all examples of the belongingness needs. Over the period of time that Tom was on the island, he did everything he could to keep a high self esteem and not have a negative attitude. He kept a calendar on a rock that he updated daily and he kept one package that he did not open. He told himself that he was going to deliver this package and I think that was one reason he had for living.


Self actualization played a big part in this movie. Throughout the movie Tom’s idea of if he was going to live or not changed. At one point in the movie he made a rope and threw over a wooden man that he had carved off a cliff to see what would happen if he jumped off the cliff w/ the rope around his neck. One morning Tom woke up to the noise of a porter potty hitting the rocks on the island. This gave him a newfound hope and a reason to live. He realized that he could make it off the island if he worked hard and waited for the right time. He waited for the right time and eventually he made it off the island. At one point when he was on the ocean he wanted to die. He left his oar behind and just floated on the island. This showed that Tom lost all hope in living. However, Tom was rescued and brought home. When he was at home, he found out that his fianc� had married and Tom’s belongingness needs were shattered. Some of the things that Tom did in the movie were out of place in Marlow’s Hierarchy but Tom generally followed the Hierarchy of needs. There were many similarities and differences in the way tom survived according to Marlow’s Hierarchy of needs.

Shakespeares Twelfth Night or What you will was a comedy based around a set of characters living in a fictional region called Illyria. The main three characters are the Duke of Illyria - Orsino, a rich young countess called Olivia, and Viola - a lady of noble birth but now shipwrecked in the unknown land and going on to become one of Orsinos pages. It is important to analise how effectively love is used in the play as it is the main theme in Twelfth Night.


Sakespeares plays have been well documented for many years and critiscised by fellow playwrites and the press, well known figures from Oscar Wilde to John Draper have given their views on this play. Oscar Wilde wrote that When one is in love one always beings by deceiving oneself and ends by deceiving others. That is what the world calls romance. A cynical comment maybe, but one which makes a great deal of sense when applied to Twelfth Night. From the outset Duke Orsino professes a deep love for Olivia which seems to be transferred so quickly to Viola at the end of the play, Orsino has deceieved himself into beleiving he loved Olivia - echoing the thoughts of Oscar Wilde.


These bizarre stages of emotion were commented on by William Archer noting that Shakespeare felt that the love which breathes through the play must be high fantastical and that its grosser phenomena must for the nonce (moment) be ignored. In a fairytale everything must be sensuous, nothing sensual; and Twelfth Night is a fairytale. Archer says that the the audience should not be incredulous when it comes to analising the relationships within Twelfth Night and that the unlikely emotions shown should be tolerated for the moment.


Act Scene 4 shows a cross section of different types of love in the play, with Orsino seemingly in love with being in love and Violas veiled emotions which she cannot reveal to him. The conversation begins when the Duke calls over Viola (Cesario) to share his emotions with Viola on the subject of his unrequited love regarding Olivia. Come hither boy. If ever you shalt love, in the sweet pangs of it, remember me. Little does he realise that Cesario loves him, and that Viola loves him more deeply than he could ever love her.

Orsino shows his true feelings towards women and how he views himself in this conversation, describing the fancies of men as more giddy and unfirm - sooner lost and worn than womens are. This is very honest of how he feels but to generalise this to other men is very delusional and shows how self important he feels when he applies his own feelings and values to those around him.


The audience can understand all of the subliminal lines that refer to Orsino without him knowing, and they can also see how upsetting that it must be for Viola to hear Orsino talking so passionately about someone else. Shakespeare presents love well in this scene with Violas unrequited love being painfully contrasted with the self indulgent love that Orsino holds for Olivia, there is also a sense of irony when Orsino suggests that a woman could never love as much as a man, There is no womans sides that can bide the beating of so strong a passion. Shakespeare shows the audience just how Viola is feelings when she comments on women; And so they are. Alas, that they are so, to die, even when they to prefection grow. This means that a woman may be withering emotionally even when shes beautiful on the outside. Shakespeare uses this to emphasise the hidden emotions Viola has for Orsino, with references like this to herself which the audience can take in.


There is a love triangle in Twelfth Night between Olivia, Viola and Orsino, these are the characters and emotions which the plot is based on. Their situation also shows the myriad attitudes of each character towards the people they love. The characters in the play seem impervious to the pull of love as it seems everyone else is either in love or loved by someone.


The other main theme of different attitudes to love is also important, as nearly all of the characters behave differently in love. The complicated plot is resolved with the introduction of Violas twin brothers Sebastian who creates a solution to the unrequited love that Olivia holds for Viola. However during the final scene the easy manner in which Olivia accepts Sebastian as her husband, and the Duke shifts his affections to Viola reflects their different attitudes to love. Olivia really wanted Viola but because she is a woman she unintentionally decides to marry the closest person to Viola which is Sebastian, her brother. Olivia doesnt change her subject of passion on a whim, in the way that Duke Orsino does. He has his pride dented with consistent rejection yet later decides to marry Viola - showing just how shallow his love for Olivia really was.


The subplot in Twelfth Night looks at the minor theme which is self-love, this is the main comic element in the play, and the humour that Shakespeare creates is based on the (cruel?) trick played on Malvolio which ended with him being declared insane by those around him. The less prominent characters such as Maria, Sir Toby and Sir Andrew plan to ridicule and humiliate Malvolio because of his superior and conceited demeanour, which is apparent from the way he talks to those who are below him. However it is not just those below him that he angers, he tell Sir Toby, his social superior, that my lady is willing to big you farewell. This self love makes him very vulnerable to being duped by other characters. He does not hesitate to reprimand Sir Toby, and has the audacity to think that Olivia, someone beautiful, rich and longed for by other powerful people such as Orsino is interested in him.


Sir Toby and Maria desire to take revenge for his snide comments, and Maria provides the plan. This acts as a way of speeding up the development of the relationship between Maria and Sir Toby as well. Both of them enjoy the trick played on Malvolio and their wits are matched throughout this particular ploy.


Because self love is a humour element of the play some may argue that because it is intended to be taken as light hearted then the effectiveness of portraying love is poor, however the extent of character building around Malvolio shows just how powerful self love can be. The distain that the audience may hold for Malvolio for his self love works well in contrast to the connection they feel to the love between other characters.


Despuite the fact that the play has a happy ending in which the storyline is tied up and the characters pair off itno marraige. Shakespeare shows that pain is often caused by love. The characters seem to view love as some kind of curse, soemthing which grips them suddenly and with various consequences. Various characters claim to suffer from being in love. At one point Orsino depicts love dolefully as an appetite that he wants to satisfy but cant, at another point he calls his desires fell and cruel hounds. Olivia, more bluntly, describes love as a plague which makes her suffer terribly. These metaphors have an element of violence, portraying the love-struck as victims of an unknown force in the universe.


Love is also quite exclusionary in Twelfth Night, some people acheive romantic happiness, but others do not. At the end of the play, the happy lovers rejoice, but both Malvolio and Antonio are left out of this mood.


To judge just how well Shakespeare expresses love in Twelfth Night we must take into consideration the various aspects or love which he uses throughout. The interpretation of love for each character, contrasts in relationships, hidden intentions, self love, suffering as a cause of love and also the way it is put together.


The various different ways in which love is perceived is an excellent way of making the theme a realistic one, not everyone regards love in the same way and Shakespeare acknowledges this with varied ways of showing love and emotion, Olivias secret love for Cesario as opposed to the Dukes passionate, extroverted attempts to win over Olivia being just two examples of this. Contrasts in relationships also feature throughout - Viola could not be more different from Duke Orsino however they end up marrying each other.


Self love is accurately portrayed and it also gives a diverting subplot which adds a different perspective to how love can be. This is definately a positive in the play which adds realism to Twelfth Night - somewhat making up for the lapse in realism that was mentioned in the last paragraph.
