Dear Mayor

It is to my understanding that your community has a budget surplus and wants to address the problem of an increasing crime rate. Two proposals are under consideration. One proposal is to have more police officers to lock up criminals and the second proposal is to build a recreational center to keep young people off the streets and out of trouble. I suggest the surplus money should be used to build a recreational center in order to keep young people off the streets and out of trouble. It will improve the quality of life in your neighborhood.

Building a recreational center for kids will give them a place to hang out after school. This recreational center will be a fun and educational place. This place can be used for research for students just like a library. We can also arrange for a library a study where kids can be helped with their homework assignments. They can just hang out there, read a book or log on to the computer. It is just like an after school program knowing that your child is in the safe place after school will improve the quality of life in your neighborhood.

Statistic shows that the majority of teens that attend high school get involved in dealing with drugs. It is proven that taking drugs can result in the person becoming unconscious. This will result in committing crimes like shoplifting or murdering someone if the kid has a knife or gun. Keeping our streets safe will improve the quality of life in our neighborhood we should build that recreational center.

Custom writing service can write essays on budget surplus for recreational

Using that surplus money to have more police officers to lock up criminals is not a good idea as to build a recreational center. We don’t need police officers just to lock up criminals. But instead we need some place for our teens to be after school where they can be safe. If they are out in the streets something will eventually happen. There are teens that deal with drugs, smoke and alcohol. We can prevent this from happening by building a recreational center for teens. We don’t need police to lock up criminals because all those teens will be recreational center which means there will be fewer kids out in the streets. Less kids outside means less crime, which will improve the quality of life in the neighborhood.

Thus while having more police officers to lock up criminals is important the lack of recreational center for idle teens is absolutely necessary at the same time. Such facility will provide teens with the opportunity to engage in creative play in safe environment, which would keep them off the streets. This will improve the quality of life not for the children but also for members in the community as well.

The issue on capital punishment being allowed in the American court system has been an ongoing debate for many years. I believe that capital punishment is moral and just. Edward Koch said “it is by exacting the highest penalty for the taking of human life that we affirm the highest value of human life.” How can murder be taken seriously if the punishment isn’t as serious as the crime? It can’t be which is why we need to do something about it. I firmly believe that you can have a deep regard for human life and also be in favor of the death penalty. One is not synonymous of the other.

Murder is the worst crime there is. Anything less than the death penalty is insulting to society and most of all the victim and their family. People who are unwilling to respect the laws of our country and be responsible law abiding citizens will be dealt with within our judicial system. This is a system that has been approved by the people of the United States and is a just way to dole out punishment for crimes committed. Morality is defined as the principles of right and wrong. As moral beings, humans deserve praise for good deeds, and punishment for bad choices. The severity of the punishment may range from a slap on the wrist to death, but the punishment must fit the crime!

It is wrong morally to imprison someone for murder. A sentence of life in an air-conditioned, cable-equipped prison where a person gets three free meals a day, personal “play” time, and regular visits with friends and family is a slap in the face of law abiding citizens. Anti-death penalty activists will say that not all prisons aren’t like this. This shows lack of knowledge. Eventually, criminal rights activists will see to it that all prisons are nice places to go. But no matter what the conditions of a certain prison are, someone who murders another human being should be made to pay for his actions by giving his own life. This is so, because a loss of freedom does not and cannot compare to a loss of life. The cost to carry out a sentence for death is much lower than the cost to house convicts for the rest of their lives. It costs correctional facilities around $4,000 a year to house an inmate that is sentenced to life without parole. In 50 years with a 4% inflation rate and $75,000 added for legal fees for trials and appeals, the figure leaps to 5.5 million dollars for one inmate. This is not factoring in any medical care or previous medical problems that the inmates have or will need. The same inmate if sentenced to death would cost around 1. million dollars, assuming 1.5 million dollars for appeals and 6 years costing $60,000 a year. With the prison system over-crowding and running short on money you can free up cells and also save money by executing the most violent offenders. Yes the prison system could also build new prisons and gain more revenue by asking for state and federal assistance, but that money has to come from somewhere. The money they would get comes from us, the taxpayers. It is not fair to make people that have committed no crimes at all or are maybe victims of crimes to pay extremely large amounts of money to house criminals. Where is the logic in saying Yes, you are a victim of crime, and yes, it is going to cost you money because you were a victim.

I have tried to argue that the death penalty is moral and just. We must never forget that no one has to be executed; if there are no murders, no one is executed. Murderers are not innocent people fighting for their lives; that statement describes the victims. First and foremost, the citizens of the United States must realize that victims rights take precedence over those of the criminals.

Manipulation of Women

In the play A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen, symbolizes the nature of Helmer’s marriage. The play was less about the rights of women than about human rights; generally less about the particular social conditions responsible for the position of women (Diyanni 105). In nineteenth-century Norway, the need for individual of both sexes is to treat each other with mutual respect (Diyanni 105). In nineteenth-century males were dominant and authority. A wife was not allowed to contact a third party (Wollstonecraft 11). Women could neither sue a third party for personal injuries or losses nor to sued by others unless her husband was included in the lawsuit (Wollstonecraft 1). Under common law- the ancient unwritten law of England on which American law is based a husband and wife were regarded as one person, and that one person was the husband (Alexander’s 1). As a result of this concept of “unity of the spouses,” women who married surrendered much of her legal identity. In nineteenth-century Norway, society dictated male dominance by using many symbols; nevertheless, women became liars through self-awareness.

Trovald Helmer rejects the heart of his marriage and embraces the conventions of society. Trovald treats Nora as if she were his trophy of daughter. He is demanding to women. He addresses his wife as some kind of bird and other funny names, not only that but he also addresses her as a “helpless thing” (Diyanni 1085). Torvald is also a hypocrite, we see this when Dr. Rank (his friend) wants to come in the house and he talks behind Ranks back, he did the same to Kristen after she left. His father like figure to Nora makes her acts the way he wants to, like a little girl that could not live without him. She acts like a little girl and gets everything she wants. The central and management of women real property, as well as the profits from any leases women held, went to her husband (Alexander 1).

Nora Helmer fights reduction, not because she wants to be a man, but to express more of herself. In nineteenth-century Norway, women were not able to take responsibilities in the marriage. Nora’s symbolizes as a man to pay the debt without her husband knowledge. As soon as Nora takes out the loan, she shows as an independent woman. Nora is taking responsibility that men usually have. Nora was not allowed to have any friends. Some modern-day restrictions still in force that it do not permit a wife to get credit with her husband’s consent or to buy or sell property on her own behalf (Alexander 1). Men also became the absolute owner of all personal property women brought into the marriage, and only he could recover her legal claims against others (Alexander 1).

Nora criminal acts and the lies it necessitated her final flight to freedom. When Nora forged her father’s signature, which gave Krogstad a tremendous power over her. Krogstad were in the position to lose his job for giving her a loan without the husband consent. Women are more likely to commit embezzlement, forgery, and fraud rather than more aggressive crimes such as auto theft, burglary, robbery, and assault (Alexander 177). She started her own business in the house to make some extra money without her husband consent. In many states it is obligated that a wife is not to support her husband if he is unable (Alexander).

In today’s society women are now free away from male dominance. Nora left her husband and children to start a new life. They could work outside the home; keep money they earned without permission of their husband (Alexander ). A marriage is partnership. In many states it is obligated that women must support her husband if he is in need. Men are subject to certain economic restrictions when they married. For example, a wife’s “dower right” entitled her to inherit a one-third interest in all her husband’s real estate for life. This right give away any of his property without his wife’s consent, even though he alone had control over the couple’s property and the sole obligation to support his wife and their children. Wives could now manage and control any property they acquired prior to the marriage.

¡§Grandma!¡¨ shouted little Sandy as Grandma was gently wheeled into the old folk¡¦s home. ¡§Flowers!¡¨ said Sandy as she pointed her finger towards some bright red hibiscus. Grandma made a funny twitch with the right corner of her lips, much to Sandy¡¦s amusement.

¡§Grandma has been bed-ridden for the last five years¡Kand I have tried my best to keep her in my custody but¡KI¡¦m only seventeen.,¡¨ said Jerald to the supervisor of the old folk¡¦s home, Madam Liew. Jerald¡¦s Grandma was a victim of abuse by her daughter-in-law, Jerald¡¦s step-mother. His step-mother was a cruel woman who wanted nothing more to do with the old lady. She found it a nuisance to look after the paralyzed Grandma, who suffered a stroke and had Parkinson¡¦s disease. ¡§What about your father? I mean, why didn¡¦t the court put your Grandma under his care?¡¨ asked Madam Liew. ¡§He¡¦s¡Kerm¡Kan alcoholic¡K¡¨ answered Jerald quietly. All of a sudden, Madam Liew wished she had not been so inquisitive. After a few moments of awkward silence, Jerald finally said something, ¡§so, I¡¦ll come by and visit her everyday¡Kif possible. Call me immediately if anything happens to Grandma.¡¨ Madam Liew nodded.

¡§Bye Grandma!¡¨ waved Sandy. Grandma did not respond. Jerald hugged Grandma and kissed her goodbye before picking Sandy up in his fine strong arms. Grandma watched silently as the two made their way out. What left in her were the memories of abuse and some faded sweet reminiscences of her good grandson and granddaughter. Madam Liew wheeled Grandma back into the home, wanting to help her get use to life in the old folk¡¦s home.

While on the way home, Sandy asked Jerald, ¡§Why didn¡¦t Grandma come home with us, Jerald?¡¨ Jerald pretended to look out of the window of the bus. He did not know how to answer or if he wanted to answer Sandy. Sweet innocent little Sandy. What do she know? She was barely six years old and she must not know anything about her drunkard father or her mother in jail or¡K¡¨Jerald?¡¨ prompted Sandy again. Jerald pursed his lips and tightened his arms around Sandy¡¦s tiny waist and continued looking out of the window. Sandy knew her brother well. She knew that if Jerald didn¡¦t want to answer questions he didn¡¦t like, he wouldn¡¦t. So there sat Sandy in Jerald¡¦s lap, keeping quiet for a long, long time.

¡§Shall we visit Grandma tomorrow?¡¨ asked Jerald suddenly when they alighted the bus. ¡§Really?¡¨ said Sandy, suddenly brightening up with her cheeks flushing with happiness. Jerald smiled upon seeing his little sister so happy. ¡§Yeah, I promise,¡¨ said Jerald bending down and holding up his last finger to Sandy. Sandy took his finger and dribbled her saliva all over it. Jerald looked on with disgust, but it was their way of making, and keeping, promises.

Upon reaching home, Jerald opened the door to hear some plates smashing in the kitchen and clumsy collisions against the furniture. It didn¡¦t take him long to sense that his father was home. He quickly shooed the frightened Sandy into her room. ¡§Jerald, who was that?¡¨ whispered Sandy. Jerald motioned her to sit still and keep very quiet in her room while he investigated.

¡§Dad, what the hell do you think you are doing at this time of the day in this house?¡¨ asked Jerald in an unnaturally cool voice. He was trying very hard to calm himself as he did not want Sandy to know what was going on.

¡§Son, come, come and drink with me. Where¡¦s Sandy? Ask her to come and join us too!¡¨ sang Mr. Lim. ¡§I don¡¦t have time for this, okay, dad. All I want to know is why you are home drinking when you should be working, and why can¡¦t I have some peace around here?¡¨ said Jerald, this time louder, and nearly yelling. ¡§I¡KI¡¦m¡Kout of job¡K.Look, I want you to understand ¡V ¡¨ Jerald did not wait for his father to finish, he carefully stepped over the broken plates and took hold of his dad by the shoulders, yelling into his face, ¡§I don¡¦t give a DAMN! I don¡¦t care! I don¡¦t wanna understand! All I want is Grandma home, and you outta my life!¡¨ Jerald left his dad standing in the middle of the kitchen, stunned. It was for a moment before Mr. Lim suddenly became more sober and angry that his son showed no respect for him. ¡§I AM your father! Whatever I say, you listen, my orders, you do!¡¨ he roared. ¡§Yeah, yeah, whatever! I don¡¦t have a father like you!¡¨ he spat.

Grandma lay on her bed, feeling very uneasy. She couldn¡¦t move but she had a button in her hands to buzz for the nurse to come. She missed Sandy and Jerald. She couldn¡¦t quite remember why she was here in the first place. All she could remember was a woman beating her constantly with kicks, punches and cane. That woman was horrible! She wouldn¡¦t let Grandma eat. There were many times when she felt very uncomfortable and agitated. Her bladder felt like bursting but the horrible woman refused to bring her to the toilet. When Grandma finally let loose, the woman would grumble and protest and cane her. It was her grandson who helped to clean her up.

Suddenly, Grandma realized she had dirtied herself again. She reluctantly pressed the buzzer in her palm.

A petite nurse came in a short while later. Grandma expected a grunt or something insulting. Instead, the nurse flashed her a wide smile. The nurse made a hasty exit after her job was done. Grandma tried to smile but the nurse left so quickly that Grandma couldn¡¦t even try. Not long after, Grandma felt lonely again. If only she could move¡K

¡§Grandma!¡¨ Sandy shouted as she ran into the room. Jerald held his breath, the place stunk with strong medical smell. As the two of them neared Grandma, she almost reached out for Sandy¡Kwell, almost. Her movements were very restricted, so she lay there still. Grandma tried to smile again. This time, she could feel her cheeks muscles stretching a tiny bit. ¡§I missed you!¡¨ cried Sandy as she threw her arms around Grandma¡¦s neck. The stretch on Grandma¡¦s cheeks slowly crept down to her jaws. She hoped that Sandy could see a difference. ¡§Grandma, are you okay?¡¨ asked the concerned Jerald, seeing Grandma¡¦s rigid expression, especially her cheeks. Grandma blinked twice, indicating that there was nothing wrong with her. Jerald shrugged his shoulders and continued helping Grandma to adjust her bed.

Grandma took a good look at Jerald. Now, was that young man her grandson? Oh no¡K she couldn¡¦t quite remember his name. ¡§Jerald, can you give Grandma my card, please?¡¨ Oh yes, Jerald. Grandma stared blankly at the card Sandy had made. It was childish picture of five stick figures and lots of hearts. Although it wasn¡¦t as good as Vangough¡¦s or Leonardo¡¦s, it was heart-warming.

Jerald grabbed the nearest chair and sat down beside Grandma. He sighed deeply and ran his fingers through his hair. ¡§Grams,¡¨ he started, ¡§Dad¡Khe and his wife wanted you dead. They were after your insurance money. That was why you had stroke in the first place, right? You were so angry and all¡K¡¨ Grandma squeezed her eyes tight. Yes, that was true. She¡¦d never dreamed of her own son collaborating with an outsider, to get her money. Luckily, she was smart enough to change the beneficial names to both Sandy and Jerald.

¡§So, Grandma, please¡Kdon¡¦t die¡Kdon¡¦t let them get the money,¡¨ ended Jerald. He didn¡¦t know what else to say. Grandma probably doesn¡¦t understand anyway. ¡§I¡¦m gonna look for a job because Dad¡¦s funds are running low, you know, all those cash squandered away on his drinks. I have to look after Sandy, so I couldn¡¦t come and visit you as often if I get a job,¡¨ said Jerald, shifting around in his chair. Grandma looked at him painfully. Only seventeen and he had to balance school, work and family. She felt like dying so she could help him out. At that instant, she thought of a plan.

Jerald got out of his chair and waved goodbye to Grandma. After they left, Grandma looked around for a sharp object. A fruit knife lay on a table right beside Grandma¡¦s bed. Grandma wanted to make it a point to move her fingers and arms at least a little everyday, to make them come alive again. She remembered her doctor telling her she could recover, but the physio-therapy would cost a lot. Grandma decided it was time to teach herself how to move. Day after day, Jerald¡¦s situation would not be any better than the day before, until he was threatened to drop out of school, if he couldn¡¦t pay his school fees.

One night, Grandma felt she was strong enough to reach out for the fruit knife, which was now on the breakfast table right in front of her. She grabbed it, trembling and struggling to hold it. She made a quick slice on her wrist. Nothing. She¡¦d need more strength now. Gathering all the strength she had, Grandma made a forceful slash on her left wrist. Blood. That was the last thing she wanted to see¡K

Term Paper Visual Arts

Strolling through the Memorial Art Gallery I ‘m looking for THE 1 piece of Art which catches my attention to write my term paper about . After discovering all the different rooms they have I’m making my decision for this one painting I saw on the first floor.

Write your Mine research paper

First of all it’s the whole painting’s color appearance which makes me stop and look at it closer .The colors are held in a pastel range , further the pose of the person in the painting is so welcoming , I have to look. It shows a man standing in an addict room left and right from him shelves full of paintings .

Nothing else . Just him in that addict room surrounded by paintings .

He’s standing in between and has this expansive and inviting gesture, with wide open arms and about to take a step in the viewers direction, that seems to say “ welcome to my world, take a look at it !”.

So , who is this person ? Which paintings are on the shelves and why these opened , welcoming arms of the man?

The title of this painting is “Mine” and is painted by the artist Hananiah Harari .

“ Mine “ is supposed to reflect the artist’s life , it is supposed to show which influences he had during his career to bring him to where he is at this point of his life. The paintings on the shelves turn out to be copies of famous artists like Van Gogh , Velasquez and Picasso , mixed with his own artwork and portraits of his wife , children and kids. This selfconfident painting was created by Harari when he was 71 years old. He pictured himself , standing in his world of Art. His desire to connect with the world is propably most apparent in “Mine” , he always had the desire to to educate those unfamiliar with modern art , color his philosophy about art’s significance and potential.

And yes , I find myself in those “uneducated” people . Instead of Harari being an artist like so many , not caring what other people think and undertand of Art , he is different ; and his painting reflects that very well.

To me , this painting just totally appears positive , how he is standing in between pieces of famous Art and also his own and most definetily wants everybody to see how much he enjoys it , his life which is lived through Art. It reflects how important his Artwork is for him . And it is so full of self esteem the way he painted himself , the way he welcomes everybody to his world. Nowadays too many people are negative about things they are doing ,

the life they live. But Harari seems to love what he is here for and captures that expression very well.

A Native of Rochester, New York, Harari began to paint while still a teenager. He studied first at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, and from 10- at the School of Fine Arts at Syracuse University. In Paris in 1, he studied with Fernand Lger, Andr Lhote, and Marcel Grommaire. Through portrait commissions Harari was able to extend his stay on the citys Left Bank for several years. In Paris, Harari sought out Impressionist and Old Master paintings as well as modern works. He spent a year doing copy drawings from the collections of the Louvre. After a trip to Palestine, where visual richness but little hard cash awaited him, he returned to the United States in 15. Harari settled in New York City, and joined the circle of young abstractionists working on the WPAs mural project under Burgoyne Diller. unencumbered time to develop their art in an environment of purpose and animation . . . ”. Throughout Hararis work there is whimsy and wit, and an abiding desire to express a “joie de vivre”.

In his painting “Mine’ he places the works on the shelves not in order some of them are the other way around , some of the paintings stick out of the shelve and there are almost too many of them stucked in there . Harari is propably a person who takes life as it comes. The styling of his painting leans on to a caricature style , the way he painted it and with the colors it really looks somehow like a comic.

Design and Content relate this way to each other , crazy , interesting life of the Artist(no geometric straight lines) but the colors keep it back it doesn’t make the painting scream out , the pastels keep it in Balance. And him standing in the middle of all that artwork gives the impression of the solid piece in his world of Art . The color of his clothes are interesting . He doesn’t wear a common , boring color, No , he has this pastel lilac outfit which makes him look like he has this shine inside him . “Mine” is a well done painting which definetely brings over the Artist’s massage , how confident he is with his life , how much he want others to take a look at it.

Please note that this sample paper on Mine is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. An interpretation of “My Papa’s Waltz” should take into account the complexity of the speaker’s feelings that are brought about by the father’s waltz. A dance should bring two people closer together. The dance in this poem acts that way, yet the darker side of this waltz, which is a powerfully unsettling emotion under the surface of the poem, dominates the mood, and the love and intimacy of the dance but does not make a strong impression on the reader. Theodore Roethke manipulates the reader’s emotional response to the poem through a number of literary conventions, some of which play on the conventions of a waltz.

Waltzes are not difficult dances. They are set to light-hearted music. Couples sway back and forth, as they go round and round in a dance. The reader’s emotions and sympathies do the same in the poem. The speaker carefully orders his images to juxtapose startling images with comforting images. In the first stanza, for instance, the speaker begins with an alarming image “the whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy.” The second stanza begins with the words “we romped,” undercutting the serious tone of the first stanza, yet the romping has consequences that reminds the reader again of the seriousness “ pans slid from the kitchen shelf; my mother’s countenance could not unfrown itself.” The pattern is repeated throughout the poem, and the waltz spins out of control until the reader can only focus on a whirling sequence of disturbing emotions rather than a coherent overall feeling.

The poem is relatively brief with concise lines, and its language is for the most part reflective of a child’s vocabulary and thus a child’s perspective. Most of the words are either monosyllabic or disyllabic, with one notable exception in line seven “my mother’s countenance could not unfrown itself.” These are unusual and arresting lines in terms of diction, and they signal a change in the poem. These lines give special emphasis to the speaker’s consciousness of his mother, she is not mentioned anywhere else in the poem, but her disapproval intensifies the situation.

The poem’s pattern is not exact. Nor is the rhyme scheme exact. Slant rhymes like “dizzy/easy” and “pans/countenance” demonstrate that something is out of place. Like a waltz, the words move the reader great strides in one direction before swaying back the other way, leaving the reader emotionally exhausted by the end of the poem. Words like “romped” that seem pleasant or innocent dominate the first part of the poem, while aggressive words dominate the end “my right ear scraped a buckle…beat time on my head with a palm caked hard by dirt.” At the same time, the word “death” appears in the first stanza and the comfort of going to bed in the final stanza. The overall effect is to sway the reader’s emotion violently, as in a drunken waltz.

Order Custom Essay on An explication of “My Papa’s Waltz”

There is only one example of simile in the poem, so the reader should pay special attention to its significance. In line three, the speaker hangs on “like death.” It is a complex and abstract simile whose meaning is neither obvious nor stable. The fact that Roethke chooses “death” makes the reader consider his purpose. Perhaps Roethke introduces death to emphasize the danger of a situation or the darker side of the “waltz.” Death hangs on in the sense that it is permanent, and perhaps the child wants to freeze this moment for the fear of what will happen if he or she lets go “But I hung on like death such waltzing was not easy.” Death is something that hangs on and the speaker sees his or her younger self in terms of death.

The overall image that the reader has of the waltz depends partially on the reader’s perspective. It is possible to view the poem from the father’s point of view, from the mother’s, and from the speaker’s, but the most telling imagery in the poem surrounds the father’s hands “the hand that held my wrist was battered on one knuckle.” The speaker brings back a childhood impression of the father’s hand. A hand holding a wrist is certainly more aggressive and domineering than a hand holding a hand. The hand holding the wrist implies both a difference in size of their hands and, perhaps, that the child “waltzes” unwillingly. The fact that the hand is “battered on one knuckle” connotes violence. The father, because of his knuckle, seems belligerent and potentially violent. The father’s domineering nature in the poem reflects the title of the poem. The fact that the title is written in the singular possessive case “My Papa’s Waltz” as opposed to “Our Waltz” emphasizes the control implicit in the poem.

The poem “My Papa’s Waltz” directs the reader subtly to a distinct conclusion. While the poem is not about a child’s hatred for his or her father, it does, however, connote physical control to the point of manipulation, and even abuse on the father’s part. The waltz is dangerous, ultimately its imagery contains a disapproving mother, a battered knuckle, a buckle that repeatedly scrapes a young child’s tender ear, and finally a dirt covered hand that strikes the child’s head repeatedly under the guise of keeping time for the waltz. The fact that the speaker says, “you beat time on my head” instead of “kept time” reinforces this interpretation. The waltzing ritual is not about dancing; it is about a man who asserts and maintains physical control over his child even as he loses control of himself.

The Italian Wars 144-155 -

Introduction

The key issues over which the Italian Wars were fought were primarily financial incentives for Charles VIII of France. He declared that he intended to use Naples as a base to drive the Ottomans out of Europe and liberate Constantinople. In actual truth his main motivation was self-glory and the mouth-watering prospect of acquiring some exquisite prizes of war. On the way he would acquire rich cities and portable pieces of art. It seems that this invasion had been planned for two years prior since Charles had already bought off potential rivals like Henry VII of England, Ferdinand and Macsimilion. He had also enlisted the support of Genoa and Milan, both within Italy. The regent of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, needed allies and his invitation in 154 seemed to Charles’ plans perfectly. He accepted and the Italian wars began. Also, the Cardinal of Genoa resented the current Pope, Alexander VI. He invited Charles to come in, depose him and spark off the eagerly awaited church reform.

Events 144-1516 -

There was a mixed reaction to the arrival of Charles in Italy. Florence revolted against its leader, Piero de Medici. The Popes army deserted him. In Naples the king died and rather than unite against his son the populous decided to capitulate.

There was however some reaction against Charles’ activities. Ferdinand of Aragon decreed that since Naples was subject to the papacy, that the Popes honour had been attacked. He formed the League of Venice. His main intentions were to expel Charles and become the ruler of a united Naples, Sicily and Aragon. Charles began to withdraw to France and although he won a battle at Fornovo, his outnumbered garrisons couldn’t retain Naples.

By 148 the situation in Italy was one of chaos and turmoil. Charles died in 148, which meant that there wasn’t going to be a re-invasion. Popular uprisings in Milan and Florence saw the Medicis and the Sforzas overthrown. Civil war was raging on between Pisa and Florence and the accession of Louis VIII as French King meant that the prospects for peace did not look too good.

Louis had inherited Naples, but his main objective was Milan, which he invaded in 14. He settled for the Western half and gave the Eastern half to Venice. He then headed southward to Naples, which he had agreed to jointly rule with Ferdinand. Although this meant that Louis couldn’t solely rule Italy he was in bad need of allies so as to not get driven back as his predecessor Charles VIII had done. In 150, the treaty of Blois gave Louis the right to Naples and the Pope’s illegitimate son, Cesare Borgia, gained Perugia, Urbino and Pesaro. Borgia subsequently died in 1508 and Italy remained in peace for the following 4 years, although beneath the surface the various rulers were all plotting away for the next round of battles.

Pope Julius II came to power in 150 after the death of Alexander. He acted in a ‘Iago’ (Othello) role, by encouraging various rulers to invade Italy so that he may gain control of Venetian lands. In 1508 the league of Cambrai was formed that promised Maximillian, Padua and Verona, Ferdinand, who was recognised as king of Naples and Louis who was offered Eastern Milan. Despite a victory by Louis’s infantry at Ravenna in 151, he lost his hold on Milan, Venice and Navarre, by being defeated the following year.

Peace looked a reasonable possibility in 1514 as Julius II had died and was replaced by the less ‘ambitious’ Leo X. The Sforzas and Medicis had retuned to their traditional lands of Milan and Florence. The idea of peace soon evaporated when Louis died in 1515. His successor Francis I, invaded Milan with 0,000 men, and upon an emphatic victory the only person capable of raising troops, was the Emperor, aided by English money. By 1516 peace was signed at Noyon. France controlled Milan and Genoa. Venice regained all the lands that it had lost and Spain retained Naples.

Events 1516-15 -

The accession Charles V to the Spanish throne became a very significant point in the Italian wars. When he was elected as Holy Roman Emperor in 151. Upon inheritance of the Netherlands, Franche Comte and Naples, France saw him as a clear and abundant threat. The war had now become a Habsburg Vs Valois affair, both had considerable financial and military might.

Both sides saw Milan as being vital to them. Charles saw it as being paramount since it lay on the route of the Habsburg, Austria-Spain communications route. Francis on the other hand would have felt very threatened by the strong and imminent presence of the Habsburg throne all around him. It would be a setback of the greatest magnitude if he, like his predecessors Charles VIII and Louis VIII, was driven back from the prosperous trade centre that was Milan. It also comprised the only route he had through the Alps into N.Italy.

Disaster struck for Francis in 151, when his invasion of Spanish Navarre was defeated. Even worse though, was the fact that in subsequent battles he lost Milan to Spain. In 155 Francis was taken prisoner at the battle of Pavia and extradited to Madrid. It can be insinuated that Charles acted ‘naively’ in not seizing the initiative and believing Francis’s pleas for release in return for forfeiture of all Valois claims in Burgundy and Italy.

Francis was released, but it became clear in 156 that Francis would never willingly relinquish Milan. Charles marched into Florence and deposed the Medicis. His unpaid troops then reacted by marching southward into the Papal States, sacking the city of Rome and leaving it in waste. Francis retaliated by marching into Lombardy and attacking Spanish held Naples. His prospects for success seemed slim since in 158 his Genoese allies had deserted him.

The acquisition of Genoa then swung the war into Charles’s favour. It severely damaged the North-South communications in Italy. Charles capitalised on this by defeating the French decisively in Milan and becoming crowned the official King of Naples. With French presence in Italy pacified, the Medicis were restored as rulers of Florence and the Sforzas to Milan, as clients to the Spanish throne. Furthermore Francis relinquished his claims to Milan, Naples, Genoa, Artois and Flanders. In 151 the Habsburgs were the effective rulers of Italy, as Charles was officially crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 150 and his brother, the King of the Romans in 151.

Events 15-155 -

The restart of the war was delayed until 155, after both France and Spain found themselves suffering severe financial shortfalls. They were both forced to uphold a truce. The French called for truces in 158, ‘46 and ‘57. The Habsburgs called for them in 154, ‘in ‘44 and ‘57.

Francis took advantage of the death of Francesco Sforza, the Duke pf Milan in 155, and invaded once more. Fortunately for Francis the Ottomans had invaded Genoa and Charles had his hand forced into playing for time, as he didn’t have the resources to fight both of these opponents simultaneously.

Francis retained Savoy for years, but soon became impatient and invaded Nice, while ‘ambitiously’ laying claim to Artois, Brabant, Luxembourg, Milan and Roussillon.

As a result of Francis’s aggressive behaviour Charles, aided by Henry VIII, invaded France. Savoy and Boulogne were captured, and even Paris was threatened. The focal point of the Habsburg-Valois rivalry had shifted from Italy to France itself and N.West Europe. The death of Francis in 1547 should have prompted a recession in aggression, but the successor to the

French throne, Henry II had a personal score to settle with Charles. He had just spent years in a Madrid prison. He did not however let his emotions rule his decision-making and ruled ‘prudently’. He capitalised on the Anglo Scottish skirmishes to take back Boulogne in 1550. Even more an intriguing acquisition was made when he turned Charles’s problems with the Lutheran princes into his favour. He promised support to them in return for the bishoprics of Metz, Toul and Verdon. This gave him a tactical advantage of having access to Germany.

The balance of the affair had swung back towards the French as the Spaniards had several problems to deal with. Firstly the princes in Germany were being swung by the popular reformation. France now had troops in Metz and the Duke of Guise was winning battles in Italy, with Milan being threatened. To make matters worse the ottomans were making good progress up the N.African coast towards Spain. It seemed that the problems lay much closer to home now for Spain. All these factors culminated in the abdication of his throne by Charles, with power going to his son Philip II. Philip negotiated a peace with France and peace looked a more realistic prospect for the long term. The accession of the anti-Habsburg Pope Paul IV, again opened invitations for the French to invade Italy. The Duke of Guise tried for years to regain Naples and Milan but his attempts were unfruitful and ended when he was recalled to defend France from a Spanish invasion. From his HQ of the Netherlands Philip won his first battle against a French army in 1557. Henry finally thought that his work was complete when he had regained Calais from England. Both countries now had no choice but to make peace since neither had the finance to continue.

Results -

The treaty of Ch√Ęteau Cambresis signalled the end of the wars. France was allowed a handful of towns such as Turin, Pinerolo and Saluzo, on the Italian side of the Alps. This meant that France still had a route through the Alps into Italy for not only trade but for a future invasion. France also retained control of Metz, Toul and Verdon, as well as Calais.

The result of the wars was that Spain gained effective control of Italy, but France on the other hand had reduced its Spanish ‘encirclement’. Both countries were now financially impotent.

In Italy the effects of armies trudging up and down the countryside had taken its toll. Scenes of slaughter were commonplace, while several cities had been plundered. Italy as a whole had demonstrated that it had no ‘cohesion whatsoever and as a band of separate states was highly susceptible to invasion. The traditional Italian rivalries had been clearly shown in the conflicts, while many privately rejoiced at the sack of Rome since it was the Pope who ‘ironically’ had invited foreign armies into Italy anyway.

Teen pregnancy is a social problem that affects the entire community. It is important to examine the root causes of this problem, and the effects this problem has on our society, the individual, and the community. Then we will be able analyze possible ways of combating this problem. The causes of teenage pregnancy is not only the fault of the individual. There are a myriad of influences and circmstances that give rise to teenage pregnancy that are found in families, the community, and social dysfunctions. The negative consequences of teenage pregnancy affects the teenagers involved, the mother, and the tax payer. Every step should be taken to battle this problem. There is no single solution to this problem. It is up to the individual, the family, and the community to take necessary measures to prevent teen pregnancy. There are many causes of teenage pregnancy on the individuals part. For one, the need to participate in high-risk behaviors such as smoking, drinking and drugs influences this social problem. Teenagers sometimes choose the wrong crowds that pressure them into engaging in sexual activity. Poor school performance or lack of future goals sometimes create an atmosphere that opens the door to sexual activity. This is because teenagers sometimes feel a sense of hopelessness and an isolation to towards the world around them. The overall poor decision-making skills, and self esteem of a teenager sometimes leads to teenage pregnancy. The family on a whole has a major influence on teenage pregnancy. Some homes lack fathers or other responsible male role models. This can affect the teenager because they might seek this kind of role model from another teen which leads to teenage pregnancy. Mothers who were themselves teen mothers may influence their children. There is often ineffective modeling and reinforcement of family values in the home. Some parents struggle with appropriate parenting skills, this leads to poor communication between them and their children. Parents are faced with the situation of not being able to talk to their children about sex or ways of preventing sex because of this. Poverty puts increasing financial pressures on families that result in more emphasis on work, thus less time is spent together as a family. Some of the community and social problems that exist can be diagnosed as the cause of teenage pregnancy. For example, single-support families without support systems open the door to teenage pregnancy. The medias influence and advertising has corrupted the minds of teenagers. There is an increase in poverty that contribute to teenage pregnancy due to low income families. There is also an inability to address sex and its related issues. Overall there is an inability to collectively agree on viable solutions to address teenage pregnancy. The effects of teen pregnancy are far-reaching. Approximately $6 billion in state and federal money is spent each year on public services for families started by teen parents. Also, teen mothers are less likely than other women to receive adequate prenatal care, which leads to low birth weight and premature births. Females cite pregnancy and parenting as a major reason for dropping out of school. (Hinckley, 18). Teen pregnancy is a controversial issue because it effects society as a whole. Teenage mothers often raise children who never learn how to live productive lifestyles. Negative elements like drug addiction and crime seem to be the only outlets that are available to lonely, confused children who live in poverty-stricken cities. For many of these children there are only the options of dead-end jobs, jail or early death. Many of these children end up having their own children at an early age; therefore perpetuating the vicious cycle of poverty, poor education, joblessness, and lack of hope for the future. Teenage girls that get pregnant become overwhelmed with the pressures of supporting their children financially while trying to instill morals and ethics in their lives. It is practically impossible for a single parent to raise kids, work a job, and pay all of the bills and utilities. The build up of all of these pressures causes enormous physical and mental stress on both the mother and child. Most teen mothers have to rely on government aid like Welfare, W.I.C, Focus Hope, project housing, and Medicaid as relief. The family, individual, and the community play a vital role in preventing teenage pregnancy and providing comprehensive solutions to the problem. Individuals must take steps to ensure that they do not become a statistic . This means dedication to good school performance, youth involvement in community and or employment, and working towards developing interpersonal skills. There are a lot of things that a family can do to ensure that their child do not become a victim of teenage pregnancy. There is an important need for responsible and positive adult role models in the home. Parents should participate in youths education, and apply appropriate and consistent discipline to their children. Parents should also talk to teens openly (girls and boys) about love, relationships, and sexuality. Parents can ask kids about their interests and what they want to accomplish, and help them see how early pregnancy could hinder those dreams. . If kids see the potential outcomes of their decisions, its more likely that they will make good decisions now. Parents can supervise their teens activities without forgetting that they are no longer kids, but rather young adults who need a certain amount of independence. Children need parents to share their values and expectations. This will give teens foundation to sustain them against the negative influences of peers and popular culture, and to place them firmly on a path to future success. The community can also work towards preventing occurences of teenage pregnacy. Communities can build the social aspect of teens by setting up parent and teen support groups. Teenagers should be taught sexual education and life skills relavent to todays world. Their is a need for school-based health centers that provide easy access to contraceptive services. The needs of impoverished families need to be addressed. It is important that there is employment and volunteer opportunities available for youth, so that they will occupy their time. Finally, businesses, churches, and other community organiations need to make a commitment to support schools and other agencies efforts in teen pregnancy prevention. Teen pregnancy has implications that reach everyone. Although there are many causes and negative consequences that result from teenage pregnancy, all is not lost. Unwanted teen pregnancies can be avoided. Like an unwanted houseguest, unwanted teen pregnancies breed resentment, ill will, and a lifetime of hurt in many cases between both the parent(s) and the children. Strong ethics, education, and communication will help stem the tide of unwanted teen pregnancies.

The crafters is always aiming at risking and challenging him/herself. They risk their job everyday on the pursuit of the perfect creation.

Usually they are middle-class men/women who engage themselves in this undertake. I used usually because there is need of a fair bit of capital to start up a business and acquire the material and tools.

But once in the workshop, the crafter will test himself every minute of his life to create the best possible pot, or chair or glassware or any other hand made artefact.

Custom writing service can write essays on Workmanship of risk

They do risk their piece every minute they work on it imagine the jeweller who has spend 40 hours on this ring and he only needs to solder the last bit of gold on it, he has nearly finished, but suddenly he gets the flame too hot and the whole ring melts. 40 hours completely wasted. But even if the whole ring doesn’t get melted it may not turned out as well as the rest of the work he put in it. The point is that the craftsmen will produce a finished work that he will not be able to predict; as opposite to what the mass production outcome looks like all the same, the workmanship of certainty.

In the industry the design will have to be very simplified and the finish very bare, as every extra time spend on it will mean an extra cost added to it. This is exactly what they do not want their aim is to produce the biggest number in the smallest amount of time to keep the price down and sell more of it.

As the Mexican writer Octavio Paz stated in “Saying and Using Art and craftsmanship” ‘…The industrial object forbids the superfluous; the work of craftsmanship delights on embellishment.’

Craftsmanship was born when industry did, it seems life plays trick on us.

Before industry, if someone wanted a chair, they had to go to the chair maker, an artisan, who would spend one day making it. He had to be paid. The cost would be quite high as the artisan would be the only one supplying it and it could play on this factor.

But when machine started taking people’s job, there was the possibility of buying 6 chairs at the price of one handmade. In the one day the artisan spend to make the one, 0 came out of the small factory. And as so many were made the cost was much more convenient.

There is always been a competition between industry and craft as the craft maker would find no market for their product as people could find an object with the same function for the fraction of the price of the handmade one. The craft world had to keep up with the industry to produce a better version of it. Unluckily some only tried to produce one pot in vast number as the industry, the only result achieved would be pots or glasses or earrings that of special would have only the imperfection of handmade. Even if a craftsman decides that he will concentrate on only one glass design, after 10 years there is impossibility that two of them are exactly the same as the nature of the material and methods make this task impossible.

In most of the cases the crafter would only find a niche market where the very specialised is requested, and the workshop would be able to keep up with the demand.

Another way the craftsmanship survives is thanks to the sponsors or patrons people that are ready to put in the budget investing in the handmade. People who learnt to contemplate the beauty of the object.

As soon as the crafter show the extent of his/her virtuoso skill that the outcome becomes more an art object.

The only problem we may encounter is that the cup or the light cover actually stops performing its function all together. A good example for this fashion is a piece of writing from Bernard Leach ‘In Tokyo I made shapes and patterns with the same enthusiasm as I spent on drawing and etching, without thinking at first very much about utility and price…’.

The costumer does have the power on the maker if he/she doesn’t want to appreciate the work and ability that went into making the piece, than there is not reason at all for the craftsperson to waste his/her intelligence and will into improving the environment around them. The workman transforms simple material into something with function and beauty (as opposite to the mere function of the machine one). And is not the material that makes the object good but the skill a ring because made of gold doesn’t mean that it has to be good.

At the end of the day the reason why craft exist is because of the human relationship it offers the factor that the client realises that that object was especially made for him/her.

It will still have little flaws but they are there to remind that you paid the extra for the little extra scratch or skew ness that stops it from been special.

If you really wanted perfection and the anonymous touch than you want the £. industry spoon.

I know of this problem myself I work in a jewellery shop that sells mass production items. There are so many the times that costumers come in to the shop asking for ring and pendants and they leave complaining that they are so standardised that so many people have something similar. On the other hand we have a designer who will produce one off items at higher prices and they complain again. They want so much at no price.

One thing that I learn to appreciate is that if something is made propely its value is only going to increase with time.

To conclude, there is been an evolution in the handmade object, especially the hand crafted one, as the world around us is changing , our needs do as well. Especially as the GIP (gross income per person) increases, people can choose to spend their money in the way they want.

At the moment it is so fashionable to come out of the ordinary and there are people who strive to achieve the ultimate personalised item and to own it. And this is where the craft maker will find its market.

The Vietnam War The Vietnam War is truly one of the most unique wars ever fought by the Unites States of by any country. It was never officially declared a war (Knowll, ). It had no official beginning nor an official end. It was fought over 10,000 miles away in a virtually unknown country. The enemy and the allies looked exactly the alike, and may by day be a friend but by night become an enemy (Aaseng 11). It matched the tried and true tactics of World War Two against a hide, run, and shoot technique known as Guerrilla Warfare. It matched some of the best trained soldiers in the world against largely an untrained militia of untrained farmers. The United States’ soldiers had at least a meal to look forward to unlike the Communist Vietnamese soldiers who considered a fine cuisine to be cold rice and, if lucky, rat meat. The Vietnam War matched the most technically advanced country with one of the least advanced, and the lesser advanced not only beat but humiliated the strongest military in the world (Aaseng, 111). When the war was finally showing signs of end, the Vietnamese returned to a newly unified communist country while the United Stated soldiers returned to be called baby killers, and were often spat upon. With the complexities of war already long overdrawn because of the length of the war it is no wonder the returning solders often left home confused and returned home insane. Through an examination of the Vietnam War, in particular an event know as the My Lai Massacre, and the people involved with both, it can be proven that when the threshold for violence of a person is met or exceeded, the resulting psychological scarring becomes the most prominent reason for war being hell. Although officially, the Vietnam Conflict had neither a beginning nor an end, for the purpose of this paper it can be best examined through the decade the United States was involved February 6, 165 - August 0, 175. During World War Two the French had been a major ally to the United States in the defeat of Adolph Hitler and the Axis Powers. France occupied and claimed the small coastline country of Vietnam in Indochina. In this region there had been recent Communist uprisings funded by the USSR The Vietnamese were willing to accept Communism in return for what they had been fighting for over 000 years self rule. In 150 the United States, owing a debt of gratitude towards France, sent several advisors to aid French control in Vietnam. Over the next decade and a half, the United States would send an entire Army and Navy to aid the French in maintaining control in South Vietnam, which had separated from the Communist North Vietnam by treaty in 154. In early August of 164 a small Vietcong (term used to identify South Vietnamese in favor of communism and unification) patrol boat had an encounter with a United States war ship in the Gulf of Tonkin. Gunfire was exchanged, and, in the end, President Johnson agreed to allow aggressive retaliation. On February 6, 165, the United States began the bombing of North Vietnamese cities, marking the unofficial start of the Vietnam War (Winthrop, 85-861). In the years of the war to follow, the media began to play a role. Photo-journalists would accompany platoons on missions and, through the aid of cameras and video equipment, relate the stories to the American at home. Every night for the length of the war news programs were saturated with reports of the happenings in Vietnam and death tolls for the day. Grossly eggzrated enemy casualty numbers were reported, giving the public a false view of happenings of the war. Suddenly on January 0, 168 a Vietcong uprising, now commonly known as the Tet Offensive, took place. Tet is the Vietnamese new year and is commonly accepted as a cease-fire. With a cease-fire in effect, most major cities’ defensives were less tight. As if all at once, more than one hundred South Vietnamese cities were being shelled with Vietcong gunfire. Included in the cities were Saigon, capital of South Vietnam and home to the United States Embassy. At first the Tet Offensive appeared a failure for North Vietnam. A large portion of Vietcong troops were killed, and major Vietcong outposts were discovered. Most of the overtaken cities, including Saigon, had been regained. Unfortunately for the United States the timing of the Tet Offensive couldn’t have been worse. For the past three years the Americans at home had been promised a swift defeat of the (so called) nearly destroyed Communists, which, after the retreating of the French, had become the main goal of the United States. Worst of all, election year was approaching, and the incumbent Richard Nixon was promising a swift plan of Vietmenization in which the war was supposed to be placed in the hands of the South Vietnamese and allow for the retreat of American soldiers. Johnson was so unconfident he didn’t run for reelection. Finally, in 17 the last United States foot soldiers were removed from Vietnam, and in 175 the North Vietnamese over took Saigon, renaming it Ho Chi Mien City after their brilliant military leader. At this time the United States Embassy was surrendered, marking the end of the war (Winthrop, 861-865). As the soldiers returned home they had to adapt from a war in which over one million people were killed. There were no banners or celebrations, and as the news of events such as the My Lai Massacre spread, they were seen as ruthless killers. When these soldiers risked their lives every minute for a reason they were not told and seemingly was purposeless, and then returned to a country that despised them for what they did negative effects are emanate(Winthrop, 861-865). During the war many soldiers realized their maximum threshold for violence. When, as was the case for many soldiers, this limit was reached and even exceeded, psychological scarring is going to take place. This, combined with the return to a country that hated you for doing what you were told to do, leads to a very defective psychological behavior. March 16, 168 is truly a date remembered for one of the most horrendous acts ever committed by the United States. On this day, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 0th Infantry, under the leadership of twenty-four year old nd Lt. William L. Calley Jr. became responsible for the execution of over 00 Vietnamese civilians, mostly old men, women, and children. This atrocity, now known as the My Lai Massacre, opened the eyes of many to the realities of war. The infantry men of this battalion were ordered to systematically murder every inhabitant in this small South Vietnamese hamlet for suspicion of the harboring of Vietcong Soldiers. In this village no signs of Vietcong inhabitants were found. Neither a single uniform nor a gun was found anywhere (Hersh, 11-44) . This leads one to wonder about the motives involved. Was the massacre necessarily, or was it simply an outlet for built up anger and frustration towards the very idea of the Vietnamese (Knowll, 104-110)? It is well known that the majority of United States troops didn’t want to be in Vietnam. A lesser known fact is that the majority of South Vietnamese didn’t want United States troops there either. Infantry men in the army were usually at the lesser end of intelligence scale because more intelligent soldiers were used more as medics or as officers. In fact, thirteen of the 10 men in Charlie Company had failed the army’s basic intelligence test, which should have stopped them from even being in Vietnam (Knowll, 18). This intelligence limit means the soldiers had less comprehension skill and probably had a lower threshold for violence. Also, by this time soldiers in Vietnam had became aware of the treatment they would receive when they returned home. Doves (a generic term for anti-war demonstrators) were well known for acts such as waiting for a solider to return home so they could harass him with questions like How many babies did you kill today? (Winthrop, 861-865). As if the war itself wasn’t traumatic enough, these extra influences make the event of mental damage very possible. These issues raise the question as to whether they are simply excuses for the terrible actions such as the one at My Lai, or were the happenings such of My Lai the result of these influences. Or is it possible that the My Lai Massacre occurred for a totally different, perhaps from the anger and frustration of one man given too much power? William L. Calley Jr., born 144, grew up in Miami Florida. He attended grammar and high school there, and in 16 flunked out of college after earning four F’s. He became very uptight, and began smoking up to four packs of cigarettes a day. After leaving college, Calley became a switchman for the East Coast Railway. In 164 he made local headlines when he was arrested for allowing a forty-seven car freight train to block rush-hour traffic for thirty minutes.. In 165, Calley left Florida and eventually enlisted in the Army in 166. In spite of poor academic performance, Calley joined Officers’ Training School at Ft. Benning, GA and graduated without even learning to read a map. In 167 Calley became the platoon leader for Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 0th Infantry Captain Ernest Medina, the company’s commanding officer, was a large, powerfully built man who was certainly respected, respect that he earned rather than demanded. Lt. Calley was described as being boyish-looking. He was a mere five feet-three inches tall, and seemed jealous of the respect the soldiers had for Medina (Hersh, 1). Troops under Calley said he was always trying to be the big man; always would be the one to beat them [Vietnamese] up. He didn’t know what was going on half the time.(Hersh, 0) Calley, unlike Medina, placed high emphasis on respect towards himself; respect he simply demanded and wasn’t willing to earn. Then, on March 16, Lt. Calley became fed up with not receiving the respect the thought the deserved. On a routine investigation of the small village of My Lai, Calley discovered an outlet for his rage (Hersh, Chpt. ). Calley ordered for the 00 plus Vietnamese civilians to be lined up and be systematically excited, one by one while the others watched. Every civilian found was killed. The following is a portion of a letter from a GI concerning the incident ...Some of the guys are so careless! Today a buddy of mine called La Dai (come here) into a hut. An old man came out of the shelter. My buddy told the man to get away from the hut, and since we have to move quickly on a sweep, just threw a hand grenade into the shelter. As he pulled the pin the old man got excited and started jabbering and running toward my buddy and the hut. A GI, not understanding, stopped the old man with a football tackle just as my buddy threw the grenade... After he threw it, and was running for cover, we all heard a baby crying from inside the shelter. There was nothing we could do.... After the explosion we found the mother, two children (ages about six and twelve, boy and girl), and an almost newborn baby. That is what the old man was trying to tell us!... (Hersh, 1-1) November 17, 170 Lt. Calley was tried for, and eventually convicted for, his part in the premeditated murder of 10 Oriental human beings. In a court-martial, murder is punishable by death by hanging. After a long deliberation, the jury returned a sentence of life imprisonment, of which William Calley served three years. Calley is now a successful jeweler in Columbus, Georgia (Knappmar, 58-601). Whether or not Lt. Calley was acting on order, as he claimed, or out of pure rage may never be known. It is known, however, that without the psychological stresses caused by Vietnam, the My Lai Massacre may have never happened. The remainder of this paper is an investigation of the causes and effects of those stresses in attempt to answer why, and, ideally, prevent another atrocity like the My Lai Massacre. In any war, psychological stresses are inevitable. The memory of risking one’s life will not fade quickly and is reason alone enough to drive one insane. As stated previously, however, the war in Vietnam provided additional stresses. A major stress was the fact that neither the citizens of the United States nor of South Vietnam accepted American interference. A solider was usually uninformed of the intentions of their government. Soldiers are taught to carry out orders without asking questions. This could lead to a solider developing a belief that all fighting was being done in vain. Eventually, a solider would lose care in what he was doing. His self worth would lower, thus lowering his view of worth of others. When he sees all the death and destruction in what has became his world and realizes he is partly responsible, he begins to regard himself as a killer, who himself deserves death. It is highly probable that even with the end of a tour soldiers go home with this responsible killer attitude, and is forced back into an unaccepting society still believing he doesn’t deserve to live, and often questioning why he still is. Over the years, these repressed feelings grow until they eventually become uncontrollable, and take control of the person, physically and mentally. There are two major viewpoints on the psychological effects of events such as My Lai. One of these views is from the commanded solider. If the happenings of everyday life in Vietnam are enough to drive one insane, the effects of watching and participating a massacre of over 00 innocent people are truly destructive. Months after such happenings, the soldiers are expected to return to normal, everyday civilian life. This in its self is a form of denial. The same pressures on every solider are on those witnesses to the outrages, only the witness must find a way to deal with both. Common sense leads one to deduce that if causes are extreme the results should be expected, too, to be extreme. Another viewpoint is that from the commanding officers. If Lt. Calley really was responsible for the My Lai happenings, one must wonder why he wanted it to happen. Perhaps the officer was simply fed up with the war situation. He may have been tires of having responsibility for not only himself, but for all the soldiers he commanded. Not knowing the enemy from the ally could cause a situation like the fish in water tactic. This method, which was used highly as a rationalization, stated that one way to be sure to catch a fish would be to eliminate the water, just as a method killing Charlie would be to kill all Vietnamese. It can also be said, however, that the commanding officer isn’t to blame, but his commanders are. Not being in the war could lead to a sense of dehumanization towards the Vietnamese, so it becomes easier to order a massacre from Washington than to become part of one in Vietnam. One must also remember, however, that the highest rank in the army is the President, and the citizens are directly responsible for whom this may be. Through this research, it has been proven that because of events such the My Lai massacre in Vietnam there were certainly psychological changes in those involved. Today’s writers too often get caught up in what the media wants the people to believe. The only way to aquire pure, unedited information is to speak personally to someone who has experienced events such as the one mentioned. No matter what their view of the war is, when asked if war will change a person the most common response will be Nobody ever returns the same (Knowll, 17) (Mahan Interview). With the certainty of scarring evident, one must begin to question why this scarring happens and why people have a threshold for violence. The most obvious and most correct response is that war wasn’t meant to be. If people were designed with a threshold, it wasn’t meant to be exceeded. This leads one to deduce that although sometimes seemingly necessary, war is hell and it is wrong.

Have you ever wondered what makes up a thrilling novel? There are many elements that an author uses to grab the readers attention, among them are plot, characterization, theme, setting and conflict. In the science fiction/horror novel, Salems Lot, by Stephen King, the author uses varying conflicts to snare the readers interest. The main character, Ben, faces many external forces and tragedies, each of which throws him into conflict with himself. This use of man vs. self is a re-occurring technique that Mr. King uses throughout the novel.

When the wife and child of Ben die in a car crash as a result of his drunken driving, Ben struggles with the feelings of guilt, pain and regret that over come him from his knowledge of his responsibility. Bens flashbacks and nightmares replaying the accident haunt him throughout the book. Internal conflicts surface again when he travels back to his childhood home and falls in love with a woman named Susan, who reminds him of his wife. This relationship causes him to struggle with the feeling that he is, in some way betraying his dead wife.

The excitement and mystery increase as townspeople begin to disappear, and just as his relationship with Susan becomes serious, she is murdered. Bens grief is amplified by his realization that he was again unable to protect one who is dear to him. His grief is stretched to horror when he is informed that Susan has risen from the dead, and that it is up to him to set things right.

Ben, having lost all the people he loves, adopts a young boy who has also lost his family and by doing so gains a feeling that he can restart his life and therefore help to ease some of his guilt and pain. By using these reoccurring conflicts within Ben, the author has given the novel a realistic and emotional side, therefore saving it from being just a blood and gore story. As a result, Salems Lot, by Stephen King is a thrilling and action packed novel that is hard to put down or forget.

Write An Essay The Writing Process

In this paper you will learn how to successfully write an essay by following the writing process. Laurie G. Kirszner and Stephen R. Mandell authors of Patterns for College Writing, introduce step-by-step instructions for successfully petting together an essay together. Prewriting is very important in writing an essay because it will help you brainstorm ideas. You can brainstorm by reading journals and diaries. After this it is best to group your ideas. Grouping your ideas helps you to organize your thoughts so the essay has a chronological sequence by either an outline or clustering. Then you have the outline. The outline is the key point in the body paragraphs of the essay. When the outline is completed it is transferred into paragraphs. You also have to know the different sections of an essay such as, the introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion (paraphrasing).

The length, audience, and occasion of the topic in which you are writing should be a part of brainstorming and your prewriting (paraphrasing). The length of the essay should be considered. For example if your teacher tells you to write a two-page essay, you will want to limit the writing and stress mainly on the key factors of the topic. A purpose is how you are going to word what you want to say in the essay (paraphrasing). Do you want to influence the reader to believe your opinion on a particular subject? Is it directed towards customers and are you trying to get them to buy something? These are examples of questions to ask yourself to determine the purpose of the topic in the essay. Next is your audience. Decide what group you are writing the essay to. If you were to write the essay to an employer, you would want to put more emphasis on your work experience. Consider the age group and gender of the audience so your writing is consistent at a certain level (paraphrasing). For instance, if you are writing about high technology in computers, the paper should be directed towards a higher age group rather than children. Also consider the occasion for the writing. You can write about a specific behavioral problem for psychology, but it would not be suitable for an English class. It is also important to include your own thoughts and opinions, as well as your experiences. If you do not know something about the topic of your writing, learn about it so your writing is more accurate.

Brainstorming is a technique used by most writers. It is an excellent way to find more ideas about your topic. You can ask other people for their opinions and ideas, brainstorm in a group, or even by yourself (paraphrasing). Most journals consist of experiences and ideas, which create more information and allow you to explore more topics. Diaries are usually more about personal feelings, but like journals they provide a wider range of information to work with.

It is very important to keep your information, thoughts, and ideas organized. This is done by creating an informal outline or clustering (paraphrasing). An informal outline is more of a list than clustering, consisting of few major key points and details to support the key points. Unlike clustering, it may also be the pattern of your essay. Clustering gives you a visual sense of direction (paraphrasing). To cluster your ideas, you first write your topic, leaving room around it for your information. Then branch off the topic and write your major points. When you jot down the details, branching off your major points, you can determine what order you want to put your information in. Some writers create a cluster and an informal outline.

There are three parts to an essay. The first is the introduction, which is usually one paragraph (paraphrasing). You can start the introduction with a phrase, question, or even a definition. Some writers also start out by stating background information. Your introductory paragraph should always lead to your thesis. The thesis is created to state the main idea. It holds the structure of an essay together and gives your readers a concept with the details you provide for it (paraphrasing). The next thing that needs to be done is writing the body paragraphs of the essay. Each sentence should relate to one another, which is called unity. Each paragraph should relate to the topic sentence and thesis statement (paraphrasing). Like the thesis statement, a topic sentence is the main point of the essay. The sentences in the paragraphs should flow smoothly; this helps the reader to comprehend the essay with greater ease. Echoing main points and important definitions can do this (paraphrasing). A transition is a word that shows expression, unifies a sentence to show an order of events, and is very significant in your paragraph structure. Your body paragraphs should be organized, clearly understandable, and at least three paragraphs in length. The body of your essay should also relate to your thesis statement. The third part to an essay is the conclusion. This paragraph closes your essay with a summary of what you discussed. It is this paragraph that ties the ends, and shows commitment in what you have expressed in your writing (paraphrasing).

In short, essays can be difficult to put together, but you will have to write them throughout your life. You will have to write them for employers, to governors, and so on. Learning the writing process will help guide you to an organized, clearly written essay. Choose an audience, then the topic, explore your topic, and organize your information. Even though these steps seem simple, many writers, even professionals, have trouble and run into problems. Time, information, and the knowledge of essay structure are the main points to completing an essay.
